If you're not sure whether to try this place out or not, JUST DO IT. Was in town for a football game a few weeks ago and this place was clutch for breakfast. The building is unassuming. It's just south of downtown. A few blocks from FSU and right across the street from FAMU. Both me and my friend thought their pancakes and cheese grits were on point. We both got the Obama special (pancakes, grits, toast, sausage, eggs) and actually had to take half of our meal home. (Technically we both got the cheese grits.) It was just so good and so filling we couldn't finish it, and we're some grown-sized men. Set aside any political ideology you may have and order it. You will NOT regret it. (Though I'm definitely going to try their other items next time, too, to see if they're equally as amaze balls.) Quite honestly, the best part was actually talking to Ms. O (the restaurant is named after her) at the cash register as she rang us up. She was a genuine kind of nice and I actually believe she made my day better just through our brief conversation. (I know, that makes it sound like I'm a weirdo. Southern cooking at it's best, from a Jersey girl who appreciates good, down come cooking! First of all mama oleans chicken is so moist and juicy! The seasoning is perfection. A new lover of collards I was delighted to not have to add a single hint of seasoning (or even pepper sauce) to hers--they're perfect. The green beans were to die for. And then came the mac n cheese. I can imagine, if i came from down here, it would emulate what mama made- and then surpass it. And besides the food, it's the atmosphere. Mama Olean welcomed us as if we were family and left us with a hug and a reminder. She said, "I'm your mama now, im here to feed the students, I'll see you next time." It made me feel so at home and there is truly nothing like that feeling on the planet. Ps. try the jesus passion juice--she wont tell you what's in it, but damn is it good!! This is the best soul food in town. The chicken just fall off the bone all juicy and delishus. That mac and cheese dont play neither. I think we can safely call it cheese with some mac!!! I am shocked Olean's has not made an appearance on Diner's..Drive Inn's and Dive's yet because this establishment is definitely worthy of it...located on top of the hill right across from the FAMU Main Gate Ms Olean has been serving up the best soul food breakfast and lunches in town for years..at breakfast I always order the "omelet" which is more like an egg casserole...I call it the "anvil" because its a hunk of egg casserole loaded with eggs..potatoes..sausage..beef..onions..peppers..tomatoes and covered in cheese..so good....if that sounds like it might put you in a food coma you could opt for the "smaller" Obama Breakfast named after Candidate Obama who ordered it after a campaign stop in town in 2008...this "smaller" breakfast consists of grits..eggs...pancakes..bacon..and sausage...if your here for lunch there are several mains you can order from but the only one I can talk about that I have had because I order it every time is the fried chicken...anybody that has lived here for a while will till you Oleans has the best fried chicken in town....there is a reason every Florida Governor for the last 40 years has eaten her fried chicken...it's that good...perfectly seasoned..juicy chicken served with a crunchy batter that just falls off the bone...nobody comes close to her chicken..all the standard soul sides are available, but I always get some combination of mac and cheese..collard greens..and black eyed peas....all lunches come served with a big biscuit as well..Olean's is nothing fancy as you stand in line and order cafeteria style and they put your food in a Styrofoam To Go Box...there are some tables in there to eat at,but it is so tight for space that not many do that....this is a place to get your food and take it back to your house..office or a park when the weather is nice...Olean's is just a well run locally owned place where the owner(Ms Olean) is usually there with a friendly greeting serving up great food at a very reasonable price....in a town with very few legendary local places still open...Olean's is one of them....see you on DDD one day Ms Olean!! read more

My son, my husband and I just left there...I don't quite know what to say or think..our order...I ordered catfish breakfast with grits, husband ordered eggs, cornbread, sausage and grits .....our order was packaged with the following...sorry ..son ordered catfish breakfast with potatoes..Back to order..recieved ..one plate with eggs, catfish and potatoes, next order...bacon, grits, eggs ...last one..small container with One piece sausage. One scrambled egg...total $19 .04 The catfish was dry over cooked . Powdered eggs. If you get a chance to have breakfast here, do it. Don't think, just go. This is some of the best southern cooking I've had. The line was almost out the door on Saturday morning. I got the Obama special, which is their special. It had bacon, sausage, toast, grits and pancakes for six dollars. Upgrade to cheese grits for a dollar (do it). Ordered the special eggs, grits with bacon. They give you so much food! My daughter and I could not eat all of it. Son had the chicken and waffles. I will get that next time. OMG!!!! I was in town because my daughter was in orientation at FAMU. I looked on Yelp for good food in the area. This was the best fried chicken I have ever had. We went for breakfast, I got the chicken & waffle. It was so good I went back for a fried chicken dinner with mac & cheese and collards. There is no adjective that can accurately describe how good the chicken is. I will be back as much as possible. The Jesus passion juice was amazing as well. A must try!!! read more

Came here for lunch after being told they had the best soul food in Tallahassee. So me and a Coworker decide to try it out. Now because I live in Atlanta I know good Soul Food so I was ready to eat. Well I have to say I was a little disappointed. First most if the items they were offering were empty. No oxtails, no pork chops. Thus was mid day. And we asked if they had more coming they said no. Anyways, I ordered the fried chicken. Mac&cheese and greens. Sides were great and chicken had a wonderful taste. But it was room temperature. had the worst dining experience ever at Olean's on south adams . Went in with friend ordered ham and cheese, friend ordered turkey sausage tray. After friend got food and started eating i'm still waiting. After like 10 mins and other people came in and ordered and received food I finally went to counter to inquire about my food. The guy said he forgot to tell cook to make it. I clearly heard the lady who took the order tell the cook but didn't argue. I figured they wanted to me to get mad and ask for refund so i didn't tongue emoticon ps they were laughing and smiling before and after I went to the counter oh and all the while gospel music playing in store. I didn't like oleans. My friends called me crazy. I have had a lot of soul food from a lot of different places and Oleans was not even close to being in my top. Everything was heavy and greasy. More salt and oil than flavor. I was sick once and she even made me a bowl "soup" and I just didn't like it. I didn't say anything because she was a sweetheart and the staff was friendly. Ms. Olean. I am giving you 1 star because I can't give you a zero star. I ate lunch today (mac/cheese, collards, baked chicken) and as of 5 p.m., I am still dancing around the toilet! I have to agree. Olean's is definately good, down-home, southern cooking. I went for breakfast the morning Mrs. Obama and Mrs. Biden were speaking at F.A.M.U., and I got so much food, there is no way I could ever finish it. All yummy, of course. I have not had lunch there, but imagine it would be similarly good. I must say, however, don't go if you are on a diet.....Or watching your cholesterol.
