This isn't just a review... it's a cry for help. Nekst became my favorite restaurant the second I ate their tofu bahn mi and broth. The Baguette is freshly baked , veggies all fresh, theres a delicious garlicky mystery sauce inside and sprinkled with sea salt. I'm honestly getting fired up just typing about it! Best part??? The broth!! The broth is somehow packed with flavor and mixing those two together is a mind blowing experience that's obviously changed me.. Devastatingly, Nekst isn't open anymore. The owners are humans that packed up and left to go do something else for awhile. When they are around, they obviously love what they do and it shows in their food. Vietnamese food is not common in Astoria. That said this is very good! I had the beef pho, and it was different than I'm used to, but simply put, outstanding! I especially liked the homemade chili sauce that was served with it instead of the ubiquitous Sriracha that you get everywhere else. After a long morning walk, we were hungry and not in the mood for the standard breakfast choices of oatmeal, eggs, or biscuits and gravy! We came upon the sign saying they had opened at 10:00 a.m.-- just three minutes before our arrival. We were greeted by the sight of what appeared to be freshly baked bread. The smell of lemongrass and ginger permeated the air. We ordered a beef banh mi with the French dipping broth to share, and two San Pellegrino waters. Our total, pre-tip, was $24.00. We sat on the patio overlooking the river and had a truly enjoyable meal. My two minor notes that prevented a 5-star review: the cucumbers and carrots lacked the vinegary, pickled vibrance the sandwich needed, and the bread was a bit more dense than a typical Viet-French baguette, lacking the thin crispy crust we expected. By no means would this prevent us from coming back! Looking forward to trying the pho on our next visit because that dipping broth was absolutely delicious! read more

I love this food! I remember when these two (owners) rolled into town in a VW bus with a a sign that said "Have Soup Will Travel" more than twenty years ago. They rented a tiny little hole in the wall space and started serving some of the best soup I've ever tasted along with incredibly delicious house made rosemary flatbread sandwiches. It didn't take long for them to grow toward a more upscale, sort of fine dining direction. The food, service and ambience were all excellent but it just wasn't the same experience. I know it sounds corny, but it was like the love that was infused into the food they made in those early days somehow got lost in the shuffle. Well fast forward two decades and I'm overjoyed to report the magic of simple food done extremely well is back on the menu! The pho, banh mi, salad rolls and rather large chocolate chip cookie are perfect. Literally. They are in a location that's kind of hard to find but trust me, it's a hidden treasure worth seeking out. read more

Very good Banh Mi, everything was very fresh. The service was friendly, efficient, and accommodating, and the restaurant was clean. We were disappointed in their main item, the Pho. It has a nice presentation, but the broth completely lacked any depth of flavor. I have to agree with one other review that stated that it was not really Pho. I ate brunch here in September 2020. I really like the set up. 1. They are taking COVID precautions seriously. 2. There is outdoor, dog friendly, seating right on the pier with a great view of the water. Each table has its own little tent. I saw a sea lion. 3. Pho is hard to find on the north Oregon Coast, and good pho nearly impossible. The owner/chef of Nekst has perfected his take on pho. He sou vides his chicken and beef to a perfection where it's tender and flavorful with not fat or bits you don't want. Also a must have is their famous chocolate chip cookie, best I've ever had, and I've had some pretty good cookies from NYC and LA. My only complaint is that they are only open Monday-Friday and close before I'm off work so I will only be lucky enough to eat here again on a day that I don't have work read more

It was my first time there, and I purchased the beef and vegetarian noodle soup kit to take home and make. They were both delicious. It's difficult to locate pho in this area, and their soup was very similar to any pho you'd find in the city. The concept of a noodle kit that you can take home and cook fresh appealed to me. The only reason we're not giving it 5 stars is because we feel it's overpriced. $12 for a 6" sandwich with nothing on the side is a bit steep. We randomly lucked into to finding Nexst on the Monday holiday after July 4th. Everything was either closed or totally packed in Astoria. Nexst was nearly sold out when the very sweet and accommodating server managed to find two more delicious bowls of beef Pho and the last Banh Mi for us and our hungry 4 year old daughter. Delicious! The Pho has just the right combo of flavors, the Bahn me bread has that crunchy exterior but soft interior, and the ingredients are always fresh. I find myself making the drive from Seaside almost weekly to get my fix. So excited to have this restaurant in town. Worth the extra $2 for the pho kit, otherwise noodles will be too soggy. Until finding Nekst, my richest pho-related memory involved a rather questionable walk from a raucous Bia Saigon hall to nondescript food stall in an unlit alley. Though 11,924 km removed, Chef Daddy brings all the flavor of HCMC's finest purveyors of street food. His cuisine can easily stand on an international stage. The chicken (sous-vide!) pho is delicate, complicated yet approachable, and fragrant. Nekst's vegan version is packed with flavor and is well suited to combat the coldest and bleakest of North Coast days. There is a well curated selection of beverages; the Fort George Cathedral Tree is a classy substitute for 333 or Tiger. The owners are very friendly and cast no judgement on the fact that my wife and I often show up several days in a row. By all standards, Nekst should be placed within the first tier of must-experience Astoria. read more
