I love that they only did that were absolutely necessary and truly valued the original work on the furniture. I worked with peter for over a year on a commissioned woven cabinet. Over the course of the year, I became privy to his extreme lack of communication and professionalism. Before i get into it, I'd like to note that Yuri, one of their employees who did the weaving work, is amazing and extremely talented. Ultimately, if you're looking for something to get reupholstered i trust that it's in their wheelhouse of both skill and organizational competency but i would NOT ask them to do anything more complicated. They will say it's no problem and then it will definitely become a problem. They will not follow timeline, written agreements, dimensions will be wrong, etc - you will be pulling teeth. Let's begin.. Peter told me it would be completed in 2 months, it was completed in about 10 months. He kept saying it was a complicated and unique design but these are things professionals take into account when they give a client a timeline. My favorite thing he did was accidentally forward me an email to their draughtsman where he refers to me as a "stupid designer". We had a clear agreement written out, which explicitly stated that the piece would have embedded magnets and stated where the light switch would go - he failed to put either of these in correctly and was going to charge me upward of 1k to have them corrected. The real kicker is that the cabinet is not even in the correct dimensions stated in shop drawing and the client wants to return it bc it's too big!!! It was supposed to be 124" L x 24" D and it's 126" x 25.5" D. Oh yes, and the doors are hanging crooked. The first cabinet cost 17k to make and he said making another would be 53,000!!! If they want that kind of pricing they should AT LEAST be able to feign some sort of professionalism and quality. That's gallery pricing and i think he has some delusion that he's the Campanas brothers. Anyway, to reiterate - a real miserable year working with peter. To sum it up I ended up losing 20k and had terrible time. It's a shame to be writing this bc the piece would have been so beautiful without these blunders in quality. I also just have to add that the last conversation we had on the phone he was eating chips or something equally crunchy - i don't know about you but that's a move i save for when I'm talking to my brother on the phone and even then i try to hide it. yuri - if you read this you are amazing and i would hire you (without Peter) anytime!! read more

When my vintage Eames lounge chair suddenly broke in two I found several places that claimed to specialize in such restoration. I am so glad that I picked Oleck. Peter Triestman and Yuri are true artists and experts at furniture restoration. I would trust them with furniture from any period and plan on bringing them other fine furniture I have that needs serious repair. I have an Eames Lounge Chair. The shock mount under the right armrest failed, rendering the chair useless. I tried to re-attach the mount by myself. Every glue failed. So i drilled six holes through the bottom carriage to hold the mount in place. Not only was it fugly, the other mounts failed within the year. So I needed professional repair, especially considering the damage I'd done. I googled around, and came up with Olek. I called David Chipkin, the manager, and explained the situation. I didn't mention the holes in the chair base, though, for fear of rejection. I sent it off as planned, and David did a great job of keeping me informed as to progress. When I received it back, and it appeared that I hadn't damaged the rosewood at all. Mounts were precisely placed and solid. I was well please, as you can imagine. My architect father filled the house he designed in 1948 (the year I was born) with mid-century modern furniture. Included was a coffee table of his own design and a set of Herman Miller office furniture. These have now been passed down to his granddaughter. All of the furniture showed its age with critical structural issues, missing laminate, and more. I dropped off the piece in Newark and David responded with a quote within a day or two. One week later, I had my desk back and the results were amazing. This has been the WORST experience I've ever had with a business. I contacted them to replace the rubber shock mounts on my vintage Eames lounge chair, warned them that there was a previous repair to an ear on the chair, and they came and picked it up. Almost 3 weeks later when it was supposed to be close to finished, I received an email from them saying that I needed to pay an additional $800 due to "damage on the ear". Included was a photo of my chair, with the ear completely broken. No other explanation. I wrote and called them back repeatedly to try to understand how the chair had been broken while they had it. I didn't hear back for weeks, and was scared that I had lost both my deposit of over $400 AND my chair, and would have to go to the police or small claims court. Finally I heard from them and it turned out that they had been calling a wrong number - even though my number was in the emails, and I had given it to them repeatedly on the phone. Only when the person whose number it was called them back did they finally try my actual phone number. I received no apology for them calling the wrong number and not responding to my emails. Peter said that the chair had "fallen apart" while it was with them, and blamed the previous repair, which was holding perfectly and showing no signs of stress when it was picked up by them. After repeatedly pushing him on how this could have happened, he admitted that someone had sat in the chair as a "routine stress test" and that it had broken immediately. He also claimed to have no previous knowledge that the chair had been previously repaired, even though I had told a person at the company. I, and the company that had done the previous repair (in California), are at a loss to understand why someone would sit in a broken chair in order to test it - obviously that has the potential to cause further damage to a piece of furniture! FYI - Eames chairs without any previous breaks are known for having ears break when one shock mount is loose, and this is exactly what you would NOT want to do. It even says that on their website: To prevent a catastrophic failure of the shock mounts, and breaking of the lower back shell, an owner must be vigilant, and observe any signs in deterioration of the shocks. If they had noticed that there were any signs of stress they should have told me that when they received it, before they broke it further. And they definitely should not have SAT in a chair with loose shock mounts! They took zero responsibility for the damage done to the chair while it was in their possession, and a repair that should have been about $700 suddenly became $1500. Based on outside advice, I asked for them to send back the chair, and they said they would refund the deposit as well. The first time they were supposed to deliver it: they called and said the delivery guy had only picked up half the chair, and did I want half the chair now and half another day or both pieces at once? Are you kidding me??? The next time they brought it the delivery guy actually was hitting the wood on the chair against the stairs and railing as he brought it up. When it came it was even more disassembled than in the pieces, and the leather upholstery pieces were incorrectly arranged. To add insult to injury, the refunded deposit has taken out $150 in delivery fees to and from NYC! I had to pay money to have my chair broken and banged up by this company! The whole thing has taken 3 months. I would never ever recommend this company and may have to take them to small claims court due to the damage to the chair. Save yourself the grief and go anywhere else for furniture repairs. read more

This review is mixed. I retained Olek to restore a 17th-century, carved, ebony, Renaissance-period cabinet with three marble columns with ormolu capitals and bases. The cabinet is worth a small fortune. When Olek returned the piece to my apartment, the delivery men, who work for Olek, damaged one of my floor tiles. The deliverymen immediately apologized, acknowledged responsibility, and immediately left a voice message with Peter Triestman, Olek's owner, to send a repair person out to fix the floor tile. I immediately sent Peter photos of the damaged tile. A few days later, not having heard from Peter, I sent him an email. He never responded. A few days later, I called him on his cell phone. He attempted to blame me for the damaged tile. He told me he would not send someone out to repair the tile but would send me a do-it-yourself repair it. That was weeks ago and I haven't heard from him. My most recent email, sent today, requesting an update, remains unanswered. Update: I sent a copy of this review to Olek's owner, Peter Triestman. He asked me to comment on the workmanship he demonstrated in restoring the piece. The workmanship seemed acceptable to me. The work he did was vastly more expensive ($1,495) and involved than the work others had proposed to do, and for that kind of money, I was expecting him to restore the piece to something approaching perfection. He did repair the cosmetic defects, but one of the two doors was still severely warped. When I called him to discuss this while the piece was being delivered, he told me that the warping was unavoidable. I don't have the expertise to know whether this assertion is true. He does, however, have a real business operation and seems to have a range of expertise to handle jobs large and small, involving metalwork, woodwork, and upholstery. read more

Their response was immediate . I brought the cushion in on Wed. It was ready the following Mon. It looks better than the original. One of the services that Olek Lejbzon specializes in is Eames 670 Lounge chair repairs, which is a very tricky repair. My chair, from about 1970, snapped at the ear, and I tossed around several different options for restoring it to working order. Herman Miller is useless when it comes to their furniture breaking, particularly after 40 years, and so my remaining options were basically trying to buy a new shell from Hume Modern (and replace the remaining shockmounts myself), or look for a specialist who had experience with this particular repair. This was my grandparents' chair, and the most important thing to ME was that the chair be functional, and I really wanted to maintain as much of the original material as possible when completing the repair. I found Olek Lejbzon online and took a look at the examples of their work on their website, and given the level of the work and close proximity, I decided to get a quote. Now, as could and should be expected, this work was not cheap. But you're paying for skill and experience, and that's REALLY important when it comes to something so delicate. I'm a pretty handy guy, but this is NOT a DIY job or something I would have trusted to even a very good woodworker. It takes somebody who truly understands the architecture of the chair, the stress points, etc. etc. I dropped the chair off myself at their warehouse, where my anxieties were put to rest--they must have had at LEAST 30 Eames lounges there, all either nicely repaired or about to be. These guys really have the process down, and it really seems like each chair's breakage is carefully considered, and the best course of action is taken. When I dropped the chair off, they said that it was a busy time and the repair would take 3-4 weeks, with the work starting after they received my deposit check. My only real complaint with working with Olek Lejbzon was that when I called them after 4 weeks, I was told it would be done the next week, and when I called the next week, I was told it would be done the week after that, and when I called that week, I was told it would be done early the next week, which eventually it was. Honestly, it's totally fine if it takes 2 or even 3 months to do this kind of work--I get it, they're busy and it's skilled, slow work--but I would have appreciated a bit more clarity about the timeline, since I kept working my days around picking up a chair that wasn't actually done. So, for the sake of full disclosure, the quoted 3-4 weeks DID end up taking more like 6-7 weeks, and I was never called by Olek Lejbzon with a progress report or updated estimate on timing; I always called them. At the end of the day, this doesn't matter a whole lot, but I was frustrated at times during the work. As to the work itself, it's nice. I'll be honest, it's not really of the seamless quality that is on their website--where the old wood meets the new wood is very apparent, as it's just a clean line between two pieces of veneer that are slightly off in color and have very different grain patterns. PERSONALLY, I'm not really bothered by that: after all, the chair did break, and now that break and repair are part of its history, and I don't really feel any reason to hide that. The break is also on the ear, which is kind of under the armrest, so it's not as though it's GLARING, but it's definitely there. Now, this chair is not a pristine example--the Rosewood veneer has become extremely sun-bleached over the years, so I'm sure finding a matching veneer was extremely difficult. It's also possible that the broken ear was not salvageable after all, and that's OK, too. I'm just noting it because a "collector" or somebody who really was hoping for a seamless repair would likely be disappointed in the work, but for somebody like me, it's fine. More than fine if it continues to stay in one piece! For me, this chair is not a museum piece, it's a chair that I want to be able to USE and ENJOY first and foremost, because it's comfy and it has sentimental value. Olek Lejbzon also has a 15-year warranty on the work, and I was assured that if anything goes wrong with the repair (either where the wood was mended OR the new shockmounts, which they make themselves), they would take the chair back and repair it for free, which is very reassuring and sounds like a great deal. Overall, I'm glad to do business with this company and would use them again. read more

I hired Olek in January 2013 to repair and fabricate windows and a skylight for a 1 bedroom apartment in Manhattan. I met the owner Peter, who seemed detail oriented, knowledgeable and willing to address the various issues we discussed. Once the contract was signed, much of what was initially no problem became the subject of a change orders and the gaps in his knowledge became evident as it proved more difficult to actually deliver on his commitments. It is now August 2014, he has still not finished the work and I am wishing I had read the other reviews before I paid a deposit. From what his staff tell me, he took on a large UN project and left pretty much all of his other customers in the lurch. However even before he took on that work he had a year to do my job and failed to deliver. I am now in a situation where I have exceeded the time limit of my alternation agreement with the condo, face the prospect of huge penalties, and am still not able to live in my apartment. Peter seems unconcerned and continues to either make excuses or promises he fails to keep. Most recently, knowing the building was running out of patience, I asked him to either commit to a firm deadline for the final 20% of the work, or let me take my windows back and get someone else to restore them. That was June 23. Peter's response was: "We will work steadily and finish within the 6 weeks. " That was 8 weeks ago. I have written and called constantly in the intervening period, reminding him he needs to get me drawings to start work etc. He has continued to tell me he would get it done, but has actually done next to nothing. Last week he finally delivered a shop drawing for 1/2 of the work and promised me that part would be installed next week (week 9). I have called half a dozen times to try to set up a visit to his warehouse to inspect the work, but he is not answering the phone. I still don't have even a sketch of the remaining section, despite Peter telling me for the past two months that his guy is working on it. I will update this review based on what actually happens. Update 8/24/2014: Peter again failed to meet the commitment he made. The window was not installed last week as promised. In fact it was not even restored. He is now promising to complete production this week (week 10) and install week 11. The remaining drawings were not done either. Peter promised to get these complete by the end of this week (week 10) and to produce the remaining windows in week 11. I will continue to update this review until the work is done. read more

It's hard to describe how happy we are with this work. We found our coffee table in a mom-and-pop furniture shop in downtown NYC about 15 years ago. Marble top with a wood frame, it was a welcome find after a long search and we were thrilled to make it part of our home. We've never been sure how old it is, but if it's at least 50, that's a long time for a piece of wood to hold up a slab of marble. Eventually the wood dries out, which we discovered when, after moving the table one day, one side began to sink. We were afraid it was lost for good, but my wife found this company via an article in New York, and we're so happy they were able to work with us. After picking it up, they diagnosed the need to rebuild the joinery. But the work wouldn't have been complete without fully restoring it for the next 50 years, by completely refinishing the wood and fixing the brass trim, which had also been damaged by time. They even replicated some brass trim that had fallen off before we first bought it so that everything was uniform. I shouldn't say the table looks like new. It's actually better. We got to choose the color for the new finish. It was a subtle change, but a good one. We have a lot more color options now than they had 50 years ago, and it was great to take advantage of that opportunity. The owner and personnel are friendly, pleasant to deal with, and reasonable. They were kind enough to give us a tour of their facility in Newark. The equipment they have there for restoring pieces to their former glory is just amazing. It's hard to imagine anything they can't do. And you can tell that the care that goes into amassing such an impressive array of material also goes into their work. Overall, it was a pleasure to work with this company. The service they provide is truly unique. In some ways, they're the only show in town for this kind of thing, but they don't act like it, which is something we're truly grateful for. read more

I found them on Yelp and was a little concerned from one comment. Let me be clear, they were nothing but professional and the work that their team did was really impeccable. I brought them two wooden chairs that have been in my father's family for generations and they needed the seats (a grass weave) rewoven. They took the chairs and assessed them, suggested (but not in a pressuring-sort-of-way) that the base of the chairs be redone. We went ahead and had the chairs taken apart, reconstructed and the seats rewoven and I can't even tell you how happy my father is. These chairs will now remain in our family for generations to come. As aside, both Peter and David were lovely to work with, very clear and the work was done in less than 2 weeks. read more

This company was hired by my building to refurbish its exterior wooden doors. Olek took a very long time to do the work and was uncommunicative for extended periods of time. Members of the coop board needed to visit the Olek shop to make sure the doors had not been lost. Our building needed to hire another company to complete the work. read more

I called Michael Lang at Olek to discuss having my 1950s Eames chair fixed and reupholstered. I received an immediate call back. Mike was able to get the original black leather used for this chair. The young man who came to pick up the chair was polite and careful. He came within the 2 hour window of time that had been promised. Mike kept me advised by phone about the receipt of the leather. which came from another state. Another young man,equally polite and punctual, delivered the chair. The job was beautifully done. It took several weeks because of a delay in receiving the leather but I now have a classic chair almost as good as new. read more

Olek has restored several pieces for me over the years, including an antique dresser damaged by fire -- damage that is now barely perceptible. They are truly the only company that I will trust with my restoration projects. The work is exceptional, and I trust their advice implicitly. (My father and brother are woodworkers -- I know quality work when I see it, and I'm very picky.) They've always been true to estimates, in terms of final billing. Delivery people are considerate and conscientious. The work can sometimes take a while (though not always -- they were able to complete the work on the dresser in less than 4 weeks). They do very nice work. BUT! We sent Peter an Eames chair from Hawaii and they lost one of the pieces. They had to fabricate another piece thereby reducing the value of our chair They lost our check which cost us $40 to rewrite and resend. They don't have direct mails service, it seems. After endless dawdling and procrastinating we got our chair back three months later after over 60 emails back and forth. They forgot to install a clip which they sent us a month later which we had to install. We got no discount for the lost rosewood piece. Again, they do great work when all else fails but you should personally deliver and stand over them. read more

We've owned an Eames Lounge chair for 20 years and were shocked and dismayed when, without warning, the chair collapsed and dumped me unceremoniously onto the floor. We didn't understand why until we found the Olek website that explained the design flaw in the Herman Miller chair and the catastrophic failure of the rubber shock mounts. We contacted Olek and shipped the chair off to their facility in Orange, NJ. From the beginning our experience with Olek, from the owner Peter, the Office Manager David, and the expert craftsman Yuriy, has been nothing but positive. From the initial assessment of damage to the estimate of cost to repair, communication has always been timely and forthright. The chair has been expertly repaired and shipped back to us in Oregon for what we hope to be many more years of enjoyment. We would not hesitate to recommend Olek to anyone who has experienced a problem with their Eames Lounge chair. read more

THIS FIRM IS TERRIBLE. DO NOT USE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. It is a classic con-job with a bait, switch, lie, delay, cheat and steal. They quoted me one price to refinish a credenza ($500). They picked it up (for which they charged extra) and then proceeded to lie to me for THREE MONTHS about their inability to find a paint color (note that the paint color was WHITE), delays in finishing, they didn't like to result, etc. THEY NEVER RETURN PHONE CALLS OR EMAILS. PETER IS THE MOST UNRESPONSIVE GUY OUT THERE. His lackey Michael basically just tells lies that Peter feeds them. The finished result was horrible. There were new marks on the refinished paint and the drawers are now uneven. WORST OF ALL, THEY INCREASED THEIR PRICE TO $1500 AND DEMANDED CASH ON DELIVERY. They obviously knew that they screwed up and were afraid that I would stop payment on my check. They hold furniture hostage. They are COMPLETELY UNPROFESSIONAL. Anyone doing any business with this firm should think twice. read more

I had 3 pieces of furniture from different walks of life and in different conditions, color, different woods but all needing restoration. I found Olek on line together with 3 other similar businesses and send requests for proposals including pictures. The guys al Olek were the first to respond but most important, the ones who took the time to assess, and give me as much information based on my pictures. I decided to hire their services because they were hands down the ones who demonstrated the most interest in the work. They came out to assess in person, sent me a quote and picked up the furniture approx. 3 weeks ago. They delivered the furniture today and it looks fantastic, they really did a great job. The price was more than fair and as quoted, the service was excellent and the people where a pleasure to deal with, cordial and professional. My 3 pieces now look like a matching set with different personalities! They look fantastic!! I am really happy. I would and will recommend Olek to anybody who needs furniture restored. I havea vintage Eames chair that has been in my husband's family for years. It had great sentimental value. It suffered a devastating crack in the wood separating the top of the chair from the seat. I investigated several companies to do the repair. One company near my home in California seemed to be the ideal choice because of proximity. However, their advice was to replace all of the wood on both the chair and the ottoman. The gentleman at Olek strongly advised against this because that would ruin the value of the chair. Their advice throughout the process demonstrated they were real experts in restoration. So, I shipped the broken chair to them from California to New Jersey. They communicated regularly about the status, gave me a reasonable quote, and returned the chair in excellent condition. It is nearly impossible to tell that there was ever any damage to the wood. We are incredibly grateful and highly recommend them especially if you have an Eames chair. read more
