She was the absolute sweetest (and most patient) worker and we literally sat there for like 3 hours customizing me and my two friends perfumes. Plus she was so interactive and kept the conversation going to time just flew by!! Omgeee let me start off by saying this was such an amazing experience. I booked a 4 pm class but because of New York traffic I was 15 mins late but they were super accommodating and still took my reservation. I will say I can see where you might get away with not having a reservation because it was still empty although it did get busy at times. The process takes anywhere from 30 mins to 2 hrs. I did a girls night out here and it was the first activity, my friends loved the experience and we all left with scents we truly love. Don't suggest wearing any perfume prior to attending. They even have body wash and lotions you can create with your signature scents. Price was 85$ for the perfume which is cheaper than buying perfume to smell like everyone else. Depending on the combination you can really put together a long lasting scent that can make it through any busy NY day, rain or shine. 10/10 highly recommend. They save your scents to your online account so you can just reorder as you need. read more

I came upon Olfactory while watching my friend's Instagram story and was a confused since I had not seen this place before. They've only been here for a few months, and I soon realised this was part of the new-age millenial kickstarter/customizable trend - I don't mind! As someone who majored in Chemistry and has a strong sense of smell, scents have always been at the center of my life. I have bottles upon bottles of fragrance, perfume oils, candles, and reed diffusers all over the house. I decided to make a trip out and see what they offer. The place to me came off as a chique-version of a clean lab - not sterile like a hospital, but the clean white walls are offset by the lab equipment (separatory funnels, etc.) and the rainbowed wall with the scents underneath. All scents were unisex with unisex names - eg. Ashton, Dylan, Avery, etc. You can walk around trying them all - about 9 "base perfumes" which are $50/50 mL for Eau de Parfum (the strongest of the 'Eau' family {the other two being 'de toilette' and 'de Cologne'). This price is on par/cheaper than most expensive perfume houses like Hermes, Jo Malone, etc. who have the same master perfumers making their things. For $75, you can get a 50 mL "customizable" scent where they mix an "accord" with the base perfume - basically, you get a more nuanced scent by mixing with more notes. To be honest, I couldn't make a solid decision on my own and had to come back with my boyfriend because I couldn't smell the differences after a while. He actually bought me a gift bottle for my birthday, so we went two weeks later and figured out what worked with my body chemistry. It made for a really great, and unique gift - they let you pick out the label colour and will put any name label you want (up to 8 characters) so it has that bespoke feel. Both attendants on both days were INCREDIBLY patient and kind, answering all questions/whims I had. While I don't think the scents will match 100% for everyone, I think most people will find something they like and it beats the pushiness of Sephora and the air of pretension from diptyque down the road. read more

We came here for our anniversary. Total for 2 scents was a little over $200 after tip. It's pretty pricey for a regular size perfume bottle, and I honestly don't love the final scent. But I also understand the price includes the experience of making your own scent as well. Overall, the workers were friendly and it took us about an hour start to finish. Would we return? No. I can pay less and buy a perfume at Macys that I actually like wearing. But it was on my bucket list and can now cross it off. read more

The process of trying out the different ascent to the base scent we picked was super interesting. At the end, between the last two scents chosen, I picked the one I thought was juniper vs vanilla but it was the opposite. He asked me whether it's really what I like or was it my mental bias that led me to choose what I chose! I am so glad he asked because it helped me re-examine my biases. Lapin and I came here to purchase two customized scents. The staff members Lauren and JJ (founder, I believe) were helpful in providing suggestions. They have a few base scents in youthful unisex names along with a few essential oils you can add to customize your scent. The customization policy is very straightforward that you pick your main scent and then you can add another scent with it (ie, vanilla, grass, sandalwood or even another base fragrance). To make the process easier, I would recommend visiting with a few base notes you prefer or favorite scents as those will help recreating something perfect. On a side note, I was unhappy with one of the scents I created (it didn't last very long on my skin) and the offered to make me something new. A fun place if you have $75 to spare, have a few hours, and want something special, this is your place to be. read more

I was unable to stop by the brick and mortar, but they had a convenient booth in bryant park which offered everything you would find at their main store front. The worker at the booth was incredibly friendly and patient. We were able to test everything out and she kindly answered any questions we had about the fragrances. If you're not interested in customizing a fragrance, but you enjoy collecting perfume - I would definitely recommend dropping by and giving their original offerings a try as well.
