Hidden treasure in Ventura. Links style course that allows you to use every club in your bag. Huge secure parking lot. Driving range was closed because of the rain. Nice practice area for putting. Course is in great shape. You can tell there is a pride of ownership here by the staff. Golf Carts were clean and well charge. Front office/Pro shop was the best. Felt welcomed. Great selection of cigars too. Light rain on the front nine but it was St Patrick's day so we just figure we were in Ireland. Pace of play was normal for a public course. Less than 3 1/2 hrs. The Good: Great place to practice. Probably the best short game area of any course around. (I often drive 25 min to this place just to get some good practice in) Golf course is solid. Very walkable which I love Course conditions are always good. This is why it's hard to get a time. Green fee is reasonable. The Bad: Pace of play can be slow at times, but not always. Just depends on the day. Pro shop is in a temp building. Not that this is bad, but don't expect to have anyplace to chill after your round. I highly do not recommend this golf course. They are very unprofessional and I would not return. A club was left by the green and it was returned to the club house. I called and was told they had the club in their hands and would put my name on it. I arrived the next day and they said someone on the staff must of taken it. They then continued to say it was not their problem and "this is why we don't like to help people". Just all around a very rude and unprofessional golf course. Since Olivas Links is near the beach side, the temperature is much cooler and fresher than other golf courses in LA. Courses are wide-open with 6,818-yard and par 72. The scenery view is good and the greens are well-maintained. However, the only restroom in the middle of the fairways requires a passcode. It is better to get the passcode at the pro shop. The main restroom at the pro shop was also small. The beverage cart was convenient for some drinks and snacks. read more

I've been to the driving range, and love the fact that you can hit off the grass on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. I wish that was ok the rest of the week. I haven't played the course since the late 1980s, so I can't comment on that. read more

This place is a beautiful gem. The friendliest staff of any golf club I've ever been to. I will come here every chance I get.

I realize playing on a Saturday can be slow, but with the new 10 minute times and better course management, the 5 hour round should have been much faster. (Interestingly, helping with the time was that one foursome two groups ahead bowed out after 9 holes.) While the staff are very professional and welcoming, my tee time got pushed back even though we were on the tee when called. As we are literally about to tee off and talking to the marshall who told us to wait until the foursome in front of us had reached the green, another foursome shows up and states that they had the previous tee time 10 minutes past. They apparently could not speak English (or certainly pretended not to), and just walked right up the tee and started to hit. No explanation from the pro shop. Just a group that failed to show and just walked right up and teed off. So we wait again and then are told we have another twosome that will join us. We wait again and no one is showing up. So I have to call the pro shop to ask what the heck is happening. The guy in the shop said to tee off and the twosome would catch up with us but to wait on the 2nd tee for them to do so. Bizarre. As to course conditions, I fixed two ball marks on almost every green and could have fixed 5 more easily for each hole. Some holes (13, 15) were craters. The tee box on 13 was a sand pit. Fairways were fairly good. From 1-5 rating, greens were a 2, tee boxes were a two, fairways a 4. We saw the beverage cart on hole 2 at about 11:05 a.m. and never saw the beverage cart go by us again. I played this course right after it was redone over 10 years ago. Sad that the City of BuenaVentura has not built an actual club house or restaurant. With all the play it gets, you would think they would spend some money on keeping the one good City course in better shape and build an actual structure for the facility. 10-15 years of mobile trailers is ridiculous. Frankly, just disappointed. read more

Great course for being open to the public. Olivas Links was maintained terrifically from the perfect fairways, manicured bunkers, level tee boxes and true rolling greens. I teed off at 10:30 am on a Saturday and the pace of play was good. The weather was a perfect 70 degrees and no breeze. Finished the round in about 4 hours which is good for weekend play. The only con at Olivas Links is that they still don't have a clubhouse, only a temporary structure. Hopefully they'll resolve this eventually. read more

Only reason for 4 instead of 5 stars: the clubhouse is non-existent and the bathrooms stink to high hell. I'm hoping they'll build a real clubhouse soon instead of using the ghetto portables. Maintenance: better than a lot of other courses in socal. For example, I played Rancho San Marco in Santa Barbara for a $69 twilight tee time, and the fairways were just dirt. No grass. Here at Olivas, the tee boxes, fairways, rough, bunkers, and greens were beautifully kept. I also like that you can practice chipping on the practice putting green. Random: a guy that hit toward us from another hole had two shih tzus and said that dogs are allowed on this course. Not sure how legit that is, but if it's true, then cool! read more

What a fun challenging course to play. Mostly straight forward layout, but with great landscaping/tree and bunker placement/elevation changes to make it interesting. Links style, but a healthy dose of Serengeti views We were in for the weekend, and the course was in fantastic shape. Yeah, the "clubhouse" is a couple of trailers, but I'm told that's because they were in the process of building a new clubhouse when the California municipal economy went in the tank. Didn't matter to me. I go to a golf course to play golf, not hang in the clubhouse Rounds online were $57 a piece, but were basically free with the Stay And Play package we booked at the Crowne Plaza Ventura Beach. Nice deal I highly recommend it, and will be happy to play it again the next time I'm in town read more

My husband and I started playing at 1:50 tee time with a very nice twosome. It was great playing with them until the 12th hole. Our cart died about 100 yards to the 12th green. We called the golf shop three times and the guy (Sean) immediately put us on hold each time and total time on hold was more than 15 minutes. Sean finally answered the phone and we told him that we were stuck in the middle of the fairway and he had put us on hold for all that time. He offered no apologies and said he would send someone to get us. Ten more minutes passed and no one showed up, so we called the shop again. Sean said he called someone who worked outside. We waited another 15 minutes or so, finally a guy showed up to switch the cart. When we told him that we were stuck there for 45 minutes, he said it was not possible because he just got the call 10 minutes earlier. When we caught up to the fourth group that passed us, we found out their tee time was 2:30pm. So, we waited a total of 45 minutes for a cart replacement and had to deal with two unhelpful employees. This is the worst golf experience we have had. This is also a major safety hazard while four groups behind had to hit through us. Because the cart failed and the response was so incredibly slow, we also missed the opportunity to get the phone numbers of the gents we were playing with. read more

This course is wonderful. I don't know if the few guys below me are complaining because they want to keep the course a secret or maybe they're new to golf. The tee boxes: Tight, well kept and EVEN. Fairways: Very well manicured fairways, with sand filled in people's divots. Greens: Amazing. I promise, you'll love the way they roll. Difficult two teir greens, sloping undulation. Wow! I saw a member mention "dirt" in the middle of the fairways. I think he's talking about "Native areas" or as they're marked on the course "naturalized area, no carts" The only hole the native areas come into play is the dogleg right on hole #11. This is my favorite course in SoCal. I make the 1.5 hour drive weekly to play. However, the last three weeks they've been booking a 5 minute intervals which doesn't allow a finish. The course gets ridiculously backed up and you lose momentum. Please book at 8 or 10 minute intervals. It makes everybody's experience work. 5 minutes just creates anger from everyone. It is near the Ventura Marina, so you can expect it to be either foggy or breezy. If you go in the afternoon you might get completely blown out. The course is fine, a typical SoCal public course (crowded, slow play, tee boxes with lots of divots). The greens can be quite challenging - this is part of being a links-style course. The practice range is disappointing - the mats are very hard with quite a bit of wear, and this causes me some joint pain after just a small bucket. I miss Buenaventura, Mountain View, Elkins Ranch - and even the little Ozzie Osborn Par 3! read more

I still really enjoy the course, but my most recent experience again tested my patience. We played the front nine in about 2:10, and I was playing really well, so all was good with the world. That changed very quickly. After our tee shots on ten, we waited...and we continued to wait...and we waited on every shot on the back nine...at one point we were three group deep on the tee. The back nine took 3:15 to play. But they take pace of play issues very seriously. Whatever that means. The course itself was not in great shape. The greens were super slow, and the collars were not mown...very scruffy. Broken tees everywhere, worn out teeing areas. Empty ball washers. Overflowing trash. Bird crap all over the signature chairs. All this on a Saturday. You'd think they would put their best foot forward on a busy weekend day, but I guess it just doesn't matter if you know you're going to pump out the rounds anyway. Disappointing. Downgraded from four to three stars. read more

My first time away from Seoul Park in Ojai, and LOVED it! The incoming caretakers of Seoul need to go to Olivas and study how to run a golf course with grace, class, courtesy, and beauty. At first I thought seeing the mall buildings in the background and cars going by on the freeway would be a bummer. Absolutely forgot about them as I became lost in the beauty and meticulous care of the greens, tee boxes, and fairways. As I moved on through the course I became enchanted. I found my ball in the strangest of places all morning and didn't mind a bit. Maybe if I hit the woods a little better... Actual sand in the bunkers was interesting, and while I didn't see deer, the ducks- or are they geese? that wandered about made up for it. The regulars out there are great people, really friendly and close knit, and the place is dog friendly! They told me I could bring mine if he walked beside me. Alas, he barks idiotically on the backswing :( The manager...or owner? He actually greets you at the first tee and explains things! He also has a brilliant dog, Gus. As I drove home I thought I must have shown up on "Make New Customers Day" Or is that just the way they do things on a day-to-day basis at Olivas? Whatever, they won me over and I'll be back. I love this course. Best course in the county in my opinion. Very well kept and nice and green. Good value as well. I like to play on Tuesdays. $39 for 18 & a cart. Pro shop people are always friendly as well. read more
