Played here for the first time today. I will start by commenting on the course conditions. They are outstanding. There is no question that Olivas Links has the best conditions of any public course in Los Angeles or Ventura. There is no comparison. The fairways are like putting greens. You'd be hard pressed to find any bare spots and the ones you do find are about 1sq ft. The tee boxes are equally perfect. The greens are medium firm and don't have many ballparks. The rough is cut to about two inches. The fairways here are pretty narrow and all the holes are lined with a native plant area so you may loose some balls. The sand traps were nice and powdery. The conditions here are as close to perfect as you can ask for. Pace of play left something to be desired. I had an early afternoon tee time and it took us about 5 hrs to get through the round. That was disappointing. I'll have to preface my following statement by saying my ideal course layout involves tree lined fairways, isolation, elevation changes, and a sub four hour round. I won't be back to often as this course does not offer that. There are plenty of trees but they are not dense and every hole runs parallel to at least one other. The lack of density means you can look around and count at least 20 other golfers at anytime. It also means some of the holes look similar to other ones. There is also a lack of information related to hole layout and yardage. The scorecards and tee boxes don't have pictures of the hole you're playing and although many of the sprinkler heads are labeled there is no yardage sticks as most courses have. I give this course 5 stars because the price and the course conditions are just too good. read more

I wasn't sure I liked the redesign at first but now that it's grown up, it's fantastic. It's really beautiful, challenging and fun. The fairways are like carpet. Literally, like carpet! There's one problem though, tumbleweeds. Between the fairways where, you should normally be able to find your ball, it's most likely in or under a fresh green tumbleweed. Sure, they don't look too bad now when they're green but when it's time to dry out and tumble away ... My point is that it's fairly windy here and not everyone can hit the fairways, the design of the links style course allows for errant shots and finding those balls, but these tumbleweeds prevent that and slow down play, and we don't like slow play. I lived in Lancaster, so I know tumbleweeds. Pick 'em when they're green, before they tumble and spread their seeds, or you can just torch 'em when the start to get dry ... read more

Don't bother calling to get teetimes at this course, it is an exercise in futility. Every time I've called over the last year, they tell me that there's no teetimes because they have a tournament that weekend. I haven't played there in a few years but I promise that I will never Call to get a teetime again. I would recommend that all of you do the same! Don't waste your time! read more

There are a lot of things to really like about Olivas Links. The practice facility: Driving range is good (hit off of grass on Fri/Sat/Sun) with five different targets. The balls themselves are fine (few gleamers, few pretty beat up, most somewhere in between), and the mats are in good condition. The short game area is probably my favorite thing. There's a fairly big green (that's actually maintained like a regular green) with four hole locations. It's got some undulations and you can hit from any side, so you can work uphill/downhill/sidehill, into the wind, with the wind, etc...You can also work on shots out of fairway-type lies as well as lies from the rough. Any short game shot you can imagine, you can practice there. There's also a large bunker where you can practice all kinds of sand shots. In addition to all that, there's a grassy area where you can practice chipping into wooden barrels. Good for working on low-flighted short game shots. The putting green is big and undulating with lots of hole locations. They also cut at least one "small hole" so you can work with that, if that's your thing. The speed and roll will mirror what you'll see on the course fairly well. The course itself is also great: Tee boxes (four sets of tees) and fairways are well maintained. The greens are receptive, roll pretty true and are kept at a pretty forgiving speed (read: above the hole isn't an automatic three putt). The layout is really nice. I wouldn't call it "easy", but it's also not super-punitive either- very fair. It was obviously designed with the prevailing wind in mind. It's flat, so makes for a pretty easy walk. There are a couple of spots where the routing gets a little weird/tight/confusing (2 tee/9 tee, 12 green/17 green/18 tee), but that's a super minor gripe. Things that could be better: Pace of play on weekends and Tuesdays. You're looking at 5+, unless you go off at the crack of dawn. This isn't specific to Olivas, though. I've found that this is the case with most public courses in SB/Ventura/LA counties. Olivas is far from the worst I've seen. The clubhouse. This doesn't bother me, but if you want a place where you can kick it on the patio with a coldie after your round, this isn't really it. All things considered, for the price, Olivas is a great option. Comparable to Soule Park, Glen Annie, SB Muni, Robles Greens, Encino/Balboa. read more

Golf Course it very well kept. The management and "Marshal" is useless. This is a links course where it is very easy to lose a ball. If you are stuck behind a group of "hackers" too bad enjoy your 5 - 5 1/2 hour round. read more

Out on this course in the late evening, with the sun gone behind the foggy gloom of the marine layer, a few birds chirping, and lots of emptiness around you, makes it easy to remember why you love this game. Interesting golf course. Fantastic placement of trees, some fairly long holes, and everything on the course in excellent shape. People do need to repair their ball marks on the greens, though. That's a bummer. Fairways in perfect condition, tee boxes too. I'm kinda glad that there are just temporary structures for the clubhouse and pro shop. Keeps the crowds down just a tad. Had no trouble walking on as a single at 4 pm on a Sunday, and got around in four hours without having to wait very much at all. Liked it better than Buenaventura. read more

I loved it. Was crowded the day I played - from 2:30pm on Saturday in January. But I finished (in the dark). VERY nice layout. Links style course, yet there were fairways that pinched down between big pines. With a few trees, bunkers, and serious rough, shot placement was critical. Have heard nothing but good things about this course and for the $65 green fee with cart it should be good. This was my first round on the course and while I love the layout of it and the links style, the course is in absolute pathetic shape except for the Greens. Fairways are absolutely terrible!! Hitting off dirt in the center of the fairway is not my idea of a $65 course. The city courses in Los Angeles are in much better condition. Apparently watering the fairways isn't allowed. This is not worth the price they charge at all. I've only played on a couple of courses in worse condition than this one. read more

First time here, simply to hit balls at the range. Ball dispenser was empty and waited 20 minutes, with it still not being refilled. About six or seven is we're waiting. Got our money back and went elsewhere. Not a good first impression. read more

The course is amazing year round. The rates are also unmatched. The problem lies with the starter, Mark. He seems to think we are playing August National. His arrogance and overall poor attitude make the first tee box unenjoyable. Usually, a starter is supposed to set a friendly tone to the round. This is a municipal golf course. read more

If I add up the course, the convenience and the cost Olivas Links is my favorite public track in Ventura County. Anywhere really. It's a links style course (men 6097 to 6818, women 5348 to 6097, USGA 72.4, slope 128) and near the ocean. So the wind comes up most afternoons. But hey, that's links golf. The greens could be a little faster (they're not slow) but being a busy public course that's to be expected. Most golfers love the fairways and the greens. You wanna keep it in the fairway or the first cut (there is only one). or you might as well be in Portugal. Now about the facilities...the course is owned by the city but managed by an outfit called Kemper Sports. They're all over the country. They do a good job with what they have. What they have is a double wide (remember the city decides what to do with the money the course generates...). The 'pro trailer' is somewhere between Bushwood without the amenities and Tin Cup. No spirits but a good selection of beers and non alcoholic drinks and snacks. Logo shells, shirts and hats. Accessories, shoes and a great staff. Tables to chill at after your round and picnic tables outside. And hey, it's Ventura Beach so the weather is almost always bitchin (really nice weather). Everyone I've brought here has been stoked (very happy). People come from all over. When the valley is broiling this is the place. And they got a great range (hit off the grass Friday Saturday Sundays) and chip and putt facilities. So yeah, go, you'll be very happy. read more

Played on Saturday and Sunday. Fairways and greens were in excellent shape. I don't know how they do it considering how much play they get. The practice facility is also great, everything you could ask for. No houses on this course to hit with errant drives. While you can't see the ocean you get wonderful ocean breeze that keeps this course nice and cool (20 or 30 degrees cooler than the SF valley). Employees are friendly. Deduct 1 star because after all these years they still have not built a proper club house. It is City owned so the incompetence is to be expected -- still using a mobil home trailer type setup. They are passing up millions per year in potential bar and grill revenue. read more

The range closes at 4:30? Seems way too early considering there is light out until at least 6. Not exactly sure what that's about but that should definitely be adjusted ASAP. I called back to see if I could just play 9 before dark but was told that the last tee time was at 4:20. So essentially, I would've been allowed to play the course if I had gotten there 10 minutes earlier ( I arrived at 4:29), but gotten turned away from the range at 4:30. That doesn't really make a ton of sense to me. read more

One of the better public course in Ventura Co. The practice facility was nice and the driving range was on grass and not mats. The place still has no clubhouse. I don't know if they have any plans to even make one. The course itself was great. There was a slight ocean breeze, which made the warm day feel even better. At times, the breeze became strong gusts and came into play on my game. I had a great internet deal of $55 and it was totally worth it. read more

it'd be a really great course if the marshall gave slightly more than a flying f%ck about the pace of play. yeah i acknowledge that playing on the weekend will subject you to a 5 hour round but when forking some $70-dollars for 18 holes there should be someone out there watching the pace of play. i'd really like to play here again, just not spend 6 hours doing it. the layout is well thought out, seems like an enjoyable course for walking, and the greens are well maintained. read more

My husband and I went golfing here on Monday. We wanted to avoid the heat of Los Angeles and so we decided to venture out a golf course near the coast. We came across Olivas Links online and signed up for a tee time. This was was not what we expected when we arrived. The website made it seem like it was a real golf club with a nice club house and a beautiful course with trees...or at least that is what I was expected. When we pulled into the parking lot the first thing we noticed was that instead of a clubhouse, there were trailers. The second thing that I noticed was that the course was very bare and open, with not very many trees. We were there to golf so in all reality the clubhouse didn't really matter. It really wasn't a big deal, we were just surprised. The golf course itself was not that bad. It was a very open course. I found it difficult to separate one hole from another. Good thing we had some local players with us to help us out. It's definitely a challenging course in that wind seems to always be in play. It's got some good characteristics, greens are fast. We paid $27 per person plus $15 for a cart. Our tee time was at 1:06pm. We paid the twilight price. I think this place is definitely over priced for what it is. Don't think we will ever go back to play this course. We will probably try the other courses in the area. read more

I've played Olivas for years, one of my favorite courses... but after playing this week, the course is in horrible condition. Could be a factor of coming out of winter, but with all the rain in March, I'm concerned that the city has decided to let this course turn into a dust bowl... sad as the layout is great, granted the city has refused to build a clubhouse, but the golf enthusiasts have let them go... but now that the course looks and plays like a typical neglected city course...very sad read more

I got a chance to head out to Ventura early this morning and play Olivas LInks, which I've heard a lot of good things about lately. My tee-time was at 7 am, so the short drive from Valencia wasn't too tough; I cruised the whole way. The course is maybe a couple of miles from the ocean and is a true links style set-up. I checked-in at the clubhouse, which is really just a trailer and could be considred one of the very few drawbacks. I see it as a plus however, as the money they didn't put into an elaborate clubhouse is better used in maintenance and cheaper green fees. The practice area is awesome, although you have to hit off mats on the range. There is a practice bunker, chipping and putting area and all are first-class. We got to the tee just fine, as the weather was still overcast, enough to be "cool" but not cold, absolutely perfect golf weather. From the first tee to the last green, the course was in beautiful shape. The fairways are a beautiful green, the rough is tough but also pretty and the whole course is breathtaking. The greens roll true and the pin placement is tough but also fun. They don't try and overdo anything, the course is very quiet, cool and mysterious. The group ahead of us was super slow and I didn't see a marshall all day but the round took us about 4 hours, not bad at all. I forgot to mention, the price for 18 holes and cart was only $36!!! If you go on a Tuesday, they offer a "Twilight Tuesday" rate, where you play anytime for the twilight rate. This course is gorgeous and one of the few that is absolutely relaxing, due to the combination of the awesome course maintenance, rate of play, weather, location and layout! It's an absolute steal of a deal and I'd recommend it to anyone. Go play Olivas Links, you won't regret it! read more

Great course. Golfweek magazine named it best municipal course three years in a row(2009-2011). The greens are perfect and you cannot beat the weather. The course has a good amount of par 4's and 5's and you can certainly use your 4 or 7 hybrids because the fairways are really flush. We played twilight with a 2:15 tee time and finished all 18. The course is right off the 101 south freeway about 20 minutes outside Los Angeles county. Prime location and friendly staff. read more

Played on Labor Day at 10 am, and took about 5 hours or so. Very nice condition for a muni and plays like a higher end course. Fairways are very green, but a bit hard. Bunkers have sand, not dirt. Greens are nice, but many ball marks. Fun layout and good mix of all types of holes. Easy to walk as it is all flat. Had a good time here, you will too. read more

We played this course on a recent vacation as they had some discounted rates for recent airation of the greens. It's a links style course with very few trees, but when we visited the course was in outstanding shape. Beautiful fairways and well layed out course. The bunkers were not as deep as I would have expected from a links course, but they were still challenging. Greens are multi-tiered and challenging. The only downside that I could really find with the course was that the clubhouse was a couple of mobile units. Very odd, but the staff was attentive and courteous. For the price, this is a really good course. As a side note, I was told that this course is not usually in very good shape but when we were there it was near perfect. read more

Olivas Links is one of the more unique courses in the Ventura County area. The course has a Challenging Links style layout, so you will need to truly think about each shot that you are going to play. Olivas gives you a chance to hit every club and every type of shot that you have in your bag. The fairways are always kept very nice and plush. The greens are very nice but they tend to have an abundance of divots/ball marks/scuffs/spike marks left from other golfers. There is only so much the course can do so I wont hold it against them too much. This is one of the better values around, and will definitely give you a good challenge. If you really want to test your game, make a tee-time on a day when the Winds are howling. Very fun course to play, they also have a a great putting green and chipping facility. read more

Love the golf course, conditioning, layout etc. In fact I'm a men's club member and play there once a week on average. The only down side at this time of year is they paint the fairways with this green crap that stains your golf ball. Stop doing this! Let the fairways go dormant and Brown. It's winter! This green paint essentially ruins the ball because u can't clean it off. Maybe Olivas links will buy me some new golf balls to replace these green things I leave with every time I play there. The Olivas Links Golf Course is in excellent condition. It is well designed and fun to play. The downside is 5+ hours to finish a round.

This is a genuine Links course, which some previous reviewers failed to grasp. Coming west from LA on a summer day, you lose at least 15, probably 20, uncomfortable degrees, and pick up a nice cooling ocean breeze. That's worth a star or two. Layout is fun, actually not too flat, there 's an even mix of hilly and flat. If you want to score well and have fun, you Must hit your drive onto the fairway.otherwise, you're scrambling with bogey as your best possible result. There's no clubhouse or restaurant per se, but the cart "girl" is a very friendly, beautiful soccer Mom, and that's a plus. As for the 19th hole, friends lured me about 1.5 miles up the street to Brophy Bros in Ventura Harbor. An excellent find! I look forward to a quick return to both Olivas Links and Brophy Bros! read more

Terrible customer service booked a tee time and received confirmation. Then at 6:30 am the morning of received a call that my tee time was cancelled. Completely ruined my buddy and my plans for the day. Never had a course do this to me in my entire life of playing golf. One quick way to lose 2 good customers! read more

I took the Get Golf Ready class at Olivas Links. Ernie is a great teacher and an excellent golfer. I had a great time and learned a lot about the game. The course has an excellent putting green (lots of slope), a chipping and pitching green and a driving range. It's a great place to work on your game. I'm playing in a golf tournament today for those who have completed the Get Golf Ready course. Can't wait. should be fun. read more

The course itself is wonderful with clean fairways and well cut greens. The management at this course however is terrible! We started our round at 12:30 on Wednesday and only made it through 13 holes by 5:00pm. Almost ever tee boxed was accompanied by 2 or 3 groups waiting in line to tee off (interesting to have a full gallery watching) due to back ups. We discussed the back ups with the manager in the club house who didn't pay much attention. It is unfortunate that such a nice course is ruined by management that cares more about making money by over-booking tee times than customers service. I truly do love this course , played here many times , making the drive from Santa Clarita. As of late , the course has developed problems with pace if play , lack of carts, and carts in disrepair. DO NOT PLAY ON TUESDAYS. Expect a. 5.5 to 6 hour round due all day twilight and over booked tournament rounds. Hope this place gets better soon. . read more
