One of the best places on SDSU campus for food. The staff is super friendly and there is a ton of seating (the entirety of West Commons + outdoor seating). The sandwiches are super oily, but a great comfort food. My go-tos are the Chicago Way & the Mediterranean. My only complaint is that the prices are a little high ($12.99 for a veggie sandwich + tax or $13.99 for a meat sandwich + tax). There's also an option to make your sandwich a salad. Located in the building next to storm hall, I think it's called West Commons? Not too sure. Sandwiches are pretty good. Atomic grilled cheese is really popular. I tried the Three Little Pigs and added artichokes. The sauce on the sandwich was really good and definitely the best part. There are many options to choose from and they have some gluten-free options as well. You can also create your own sandwich if you'd like. Service was okay. I used to absolutely love these sandwiches until the prices went up and the owner was super rude when I asked about it. She could've kindly explained the reasoning but instead she talked down to me and was super mean and dismissive. Also her employees are super rude as well. Not worth the price! As a teaching associate I make less than 15 dollars an hour and I'm going into massive debt to earn my Master's. Our student population is made up of many working class and low income folks. They could offer the breakfast sandwiches later (which are more affordable) and/or offer a half sandwich or some kind of combo to make it affordable for us. Instead I will not be patronizing this business again and I will let students know that it's more affordable elsewhere on campus and with better, kinder service. Very disappointed. read more

To all the vegans. I myself am not a vegan but my boys have severe dairy and egg allergies so we eat vegan desserts. We found the Olive Oil Cafe at the Hillcrest farmers market. We were assured that the desserts were 100% vegan. Within 5 minutes, my boys had severe life-threatening allergic reactions. This means there was some non-vegan ingredients in the food. They have a booth at the OB farmer's market on Wednesday. Bought a large cream-filled donut. It was good (although not any better than any other cream-filled donut I've had in the past). You'd never know it was gluten-free though. I was initially dumbfounded by the price. $8 for one donut. It was pretty big but still. Olive Oil has a breakfast menu that I love gettin between the hours of 6am-10am. Take caution if the time because there's also possibilities that they can run out of breakfast menu options before 10am! I get the steak and egg sandwich on wheat and it is very filling for $6. I ask for it with regular tomatoes instead of sundries and it adds to the overall taste of the sandwich! I highly recommend that sandwich and their three little pigs from the meat sandwich options! Th customer service is amazing here. All the employees are helpful and well informed about the different options they have. Everyone is so charismatic here and adds to the overall ambience of west commons. This is probably my favorite panini place - especially as a vegan/vegetarian. Even though it's a 15 minute walk (located by storm hall west), the paninis are worth it. There are two options for bread - sourdough or wheat - and I always go with a sourdough panini. There are also sandwiches and soups, but my favorite panini is the vegan portobello mushroom panini with pesto and balsamic. I highly recommend this place - vegan or not! read more

The first thing that attracted me here was the smell when walking by. Eventually I decided to give it a try. This place has some pretty delicious sandwiches with "healthy" characteristics and they use herbs in their mayo spread. I usually order the steak and egg sandwich, which is large and expensive. The average college student can't afford to eat here every day. As it turns out, they can give you discounts, so I asked if they had a military one, and sure enough, the did! The next day, a different person was cashier and flat out said they don't give discounts at all. Whether or not they do, it would be nice for some consistency. And if you're thinking, none of what I mentioned really warrants such a low rating, then here it comes. One of the guys here who works here mishandled my food. When I was ordering on the left, he was cashiering (on the right), handling money. Then, without putting on gloves, he came to the prep bar and started handling my sandwich. His unclean fingers were on my lettuce, meat and bread. That's DISGUSTING! The basic rules of handling food is that you wash your hands before touching it, especially after handling money or going to the bathroom, and use gloves. It's not an option, but a requirement. All other employees use gloves when handling food and seem to change out between cash and food. I've stopped going there, but still walk by because it is en route. Every time this guy has been there he has done the same. He finally started wearing ONE glove, but still goes from cash to food without changing or washing. He still works there and he still gets his fingers in between the bread. How has no one corrected this, how does he still have a job and how do customers not notice? ~~~~This business is a scam. Please beware~~~~ I had a horrible experience with Frances Quintanilla DBA as Olive Oil Cafe. I met her through the Eastlake food to go group. In the group she posted that she had been in a car accident and was in need of help. I felt bad for her and decided to go with her to help out a small business. I blame myself for not researching out the business. I spoke to her on the phone and she told me she was not in San Diego but that she was in Missouri were she had the supposed accident (that should have been my first red flag). She sells sandwiches and dessert bars (brownies, keto and gluten free desserts) at SDSU. On June 23rd at 3:15 pm I spoke to her via facebook video chat. She was so convincing she told me she could make anything. I felt great because I was helping a small business and because she promised my fiances cake for his 40th birthday would be great. I never researched this page or other review cites to see if she had ever sold a cake, cake pops and cupcakes. She quoted me at $250 for 1/4 sheet cake, 12 cake pops and 12 cupcakes, which I thought was very expensive but I felt bad for her and agreed to pay her. I told her that I wanted to meet her at the location were my cake would be baked but she told me I couldn't go in because SDSU had a very strict policy on who could go into their kitchens because of Covid. On June 26th I picked up the cake at a remote location (another red flag, I now know that she meets customers at random locations because she doesn't want them to know her actual location because she scams people and does this to protect herself. We didn't eat the cake until June 27th (fiances birthday). The cake was hard and the cupcakes were dry (go to the olive oils cafe fb page so you can see videos of the cake and cupcakes, Yelp only allows pictures). I contacted her on Sunday the next day and she told me she would talk to me on Monday. Four days went by and she kept giving me the runaround. She kept telling me she was checking on it and on Wednesday, 5 days after I had picked up the cake she told me she still had the batter and was testing it. Seriously!! Why would she still have the batter? . She freezes her cakes and batters. I understand covid has caused business to lose money but scamming people isn't right. She never apologized or offered me a refund. Legit businesses will respond to customers reviews to remedy the customers complaints and make things right. She hasn't reached out to me and she will not reply to me here on yelp. She blocked me on Fb. I understand she might be broke and that's why she's resorting to this type of business practice. After doing some investigating here in yelp I found out that she scams people at farmers markets via credit cards. I will attach screenshots of everything I have written about. If you decide to buy something from this business please pay with a credit card and check your statement. She over charged one person $137 and charged another one twice. Imagine all the people who do not check their statements and she overcharged them. This is not a coincidence I made the mistake of paying her cash. Frances do the right thing!! You know you sold me a garbage cake and cupcakes. Karma will get you. read more

Didn't plan to write this review, but after my great experience with Olive Oil Cafe, I feel compelled to share my poor experience. I ordered an expensive sheet birthday cake, I can forgive the slight break in the cake upon pick-up, but the poor workmanship was inexcusable. First, the icing design of flowers and written script was cheap and amateurish at best. Second, the cake half was also cheap and not very tasty. It turned out to be nothing more than spice cake.Walmart or Costco would have done a better job. Worst yet, when I emailed the owner with my complaints and those of the party attendees, she completely ignored the email. While I was not looking for a refund or anything else, I at least expected some empathy. A more professional response would have been "is there anything I can do to accommodate you", which is Customer Service 101. This bakery lost me and many other potentially good customers after this experience. I love this place! It's in the bottom of West Commons on SDSU and there's three little parts to this family run business. There the Olive Oil Cafe where you can get regular and vegetarian sandwiches and whatever the soup of the day is. I love their tuna on sourdough. I get that extra toasted every time. I've even taken my family sandwiches from here my dad loves the Three Lil Pigs. I'm not gluten free so I don't really eat the gluten free sandwiches that that they have but I love their pastries. Their chocolate mint brownie bar is the best! They also have a pizza place called Crust in the same area that's their too. It is a little pricy but everywhere you eat on SDSU is pricy. What's the point of the mask if you're not using it correctly.
