This place is a little cramped so I recommend ordering your sandwich and waiting outside while the kind folks get the order together. I've lived in Kensington for 24 years. Clem's (and their associated Tap Room) is a neighborhood treasure. They are family owned and operated and are the nicest people. Sandwiches at the deli are awesome. They have a great selection of made-to-order sandwiches as well as some freshly premade items if you are in a hurry. Usually, because the sandwiches are so large, I'll split one with a friend or save the other half for later. (You can order items and bring them to the Tap Room in the back if you'd like to eat at the bar.). They also have an excellent selection of beers, wines and other beverages. Paul is super helpful and can also do special orders if you need an item they don't have. Very recently, I had a craving for root beer. I had no idea of the selection of root beers and other non-alcoholic beverages they also offer. Cream sodas, cherry colas, ginger beer, grape soda etc. Amazing. Definitely do not pass up Clem's if you are looking for a good sandwich. Take a break and eat at the Tap Room and enjoy a beer or two on their covered patio. read more

The two stars are mainly for the staff behind the checkout counter...the rude men. I fondly remember going here when I was in high school. These days I visit a few times a year. I typically call my order in ahead of time to make sure it's ready and it's always ready. The deli ladies, are nice and friendly. And, happy to help. The sandwiches are great. Huge actually. I typically order the San Diegan. Lots of deli meat, cheese, lettuce, veggies. It's big enough to split. Unfortunately the men at the counter are rude/odd. During my last visit I approached the counter to pay, and noticed a man. I tried making eye contact signaling I was ready to pay and he ignored me. I waited patiently for a bit. Then a second man arrived, he didn't acknowledge me either lol, instead he ripped off the receipt from the bag, punched the price in the register and I paid. The whole transaction was done with no "hello", "your total is", etc... I'm sorry but this is not NY lol. Zero pleasantry, politeness, cordialness. Quite awkward. At the end of the day the deli sandwiches are NOT great, it's just a deli sandwich with a ton of deli meat. Nothing truly special about it. The fact that the two men were so dismissive is so sexist. Sexist how? There were 3 fire fighters in the shop at the same time as me and one of the men working was so concened with helping the fire fighters. I'm pretty sure that's why he dismissed me. I know the world doesnt revolve around me but this was just rude. Frustrating much. Yup. Merry Christmas! I had a pastrami and Swiss sandwich. Pastrami was lean which was nice. The rye bread was fresh. Ample amount of pastrami with fresh lettuce and tomato. The store was well organized and a large selection of wines. I do recommend to the owner to warm sandwiches with a toaster over rather than throwing the meat and cheese in the microwave for several minutes. Unfortunate shortcut which causes the edges of the cheese and meat to be chewy. Won't be going back for that reason alone. Suggest getting a cold sandwich to avoid microwaved meat. read more

This is back when The Ken Theater was still there. I sat through a long movie and was hungry. I walked out and saw a Deli sign on the Clem's Bottle House store so went in. They are all set up over there offering all kinds of treats and chips and appetizers and sandwiches. I struggled to pick one but I eventually picked a turkey sub. I got extras like avocado on it. I split it with my roommate and we were both very happy with the food. I think of going back there all of the time! Ha! It's insane, but they left that good an impression on me. I ordered a chicken breast and mortadella on sourdough with provolone. Mayo only, lettuce, tomato and onion. Here's a pro-tip: if you want to elevate your sandwich salt and pepper the tomato layer, trust me, your welcome. Wow, lettuce leaves!! This unassuming mom & pop place has a multitude of spectacular drinks and sandwiches behind their doors. From the outside it looks like a dumpy liquor store. Once you step inside you'll see shelves of uniquely labeled craft beer, aisles of wine, refrigerators of oddball root beers, shelves of perfectly organized chips and workers behind a counter making sandwiches worthy of a litany of accolades. I ordered a hot pastrami sandwich on rye with melted provolone. As they made the sandwich I walked around and chose some BBQ chips and a Ramblin Root Beer to round out my lunch. I was there at high noon and the sandwich experts were over their heads in orders so it took a few minutes for my sandwich to be ready but it was worth the wait. There is no indoor seating but there are a few sidewalk tables and you are also welcome to sit in a small patio owned by Clem's on the other side of the tiny parking lot. The sandwich was enormous! The rye was fresh and pillowy soft yet strong enough to hold together with each bite. The layered Boar's Head pastrami was tender and delicious but was not very briney nor smokey. It was excellent but not in a traditional way; I'd heartily recommend it and would order it again without hesitation. Chips and root beer were both superb. Holy Pastrami on Rye! I have heard that this Bottle House made some pretty tasty sandwiches over the years, and by golly, they sure do! As you guessed, I had the pastrami on rye hot with everything, light on the mayo, and Provolone cheese in lieu of Swiss for $8.99. They toasted the rye, so the bread had a good crunch on it and was a quality marble rye bread. The Boar's Head pastrami was a medium rare and was delicious. To add to the indulgence, the Provolone cheese was melted right on top the pastrami. The hot pastrami sandwich also came with lettuce, tomatoes, mustard, and a little bit of red onion. It was a great sandwich and a feeling one too. Yes, they sell wine, beer, and the hard stuff, but man the friendly ladies behind the deli counter sure make some tasty sandwiches. read more

The two stars is because the sandwich I ordered was supposed to be on sourdough, but it tasted like white bread. No sour taste, so very disappointing. My sandwich had a good about of meat, lettuce, tomato- but to bring it all home: the nice taste from a good sourdough was absent. I have been coming here for some time, and I usually get a sandwich on squaw bread or marbled rye, but recently I opted for sourdough and it was a total fail.
