We usually pick somewhere for lunch after church. Today was Marie Callender's-I was delighted because they had fresh strawberry pie available. We were thinking about the 2 for $49 deal with appetizer, entree and dessert. But we had eaten a big breakfast. So I went with the mini chicken pot pie and Caesar salad with peach pie. We had a hardworking server covering the whole restaurant by himself. I didn't get a refill on my coffee, but we eventually did get our cornbread and I was a happy camper. I ordered a pie online for pick up for a birthday party, paid and on the day and time of my pickup got a call on my phone with a message stating there was an emergency and that I would be refunded. I got a text stating my order was cancelled. The restaurant was still open, and they were still taking online orders. I'm not sure what the emergency was however calling at the exact time my order was to be picked up sounds like they didn't make the pie so cancelled. I'm not sure and I suppose they tried to make it right by refunding me but given the experience I would not order again. read more

First time here, just stopped to pick up a pie for a personal event. We got a lemon cheese pie, which is basically if you married a lemon pie with a cheesecake. Was taking my son back to his dorm and was looking for something to pick up for him on the way back. We miss our local Marie Calendars so since there is one close to campus we decided to place an order online so he had something good to take with him. As soon as we arrived we were welcomed in. We walked up to the bakery counter and our food was ready for pick up. We got some muffins to bring home too, they are huge and really reasonably priced (good variety and tasty as well). Prices are a bit high but we got a good amount of food plus tasty side like fresh fruit, fries, or even tater tots. The club sandwich was filled with avocado and fresh turkey and my son's French dip was loaded with beef. He also got a slice of lemon meringue pie which he really liked. Beat deal is a whole pie rather than a slice ($20 vs $6). Restaurant has plenty of seating and is nice and cozy. They also have a few specials depending on the day. It's amazing how the atmosphere of this restaurant hasn't changed in 45+ years yet it looks more modern than many newer restaurants. I also ordered the decaf coffee with creamer . I also received for my birthday today is a FREE slice of birthday pie . My selection was the French Apple Crumb Pie. Great experience! I haven't been to a Marie calendars in probably about 10 years, so we figured we would stop in for lunch today. Our server Ricky was wonderful. The decor is the same as I remember and I LOVE it! The food was great, and the appetizer was half off for happy hour which was more than a deal! We also loved the complimentary corn bread! This meal was a disaster. The prior time we had been, I loved it. I particularly liked the seasonal vegtables which were perfectly cooked to my likeing which is soft. I like crisp veggies in a salad but not as part of the main course. There were 5 of use including 3 family members from out of state. All started off as usual including my telling the wait person that I like my vegetables cooked through. Not crisp tender. My son in law was not all that hungry. He just wanted pie. 2 different slices. The first issue was that all the meals were served but not all the drinks. The drinks are usually served first. My granddaughter did not get her chocolate milk until later and my husband did not get his coke til much later either and we had to ask about them. My son in law did not get his pie until much later either. If all you are ordering is pie, it should come with the other orders. The waitress didn't even ask. What really seemed to derail things is that my vegetables were not cooked through. I sent them back. After an inordinate amount of time (nuking veggies should have taken like 2 minutes) they were brought back still with crunch to them. This was the 3rd wait person to have brought my plate out. I sent it back again. I was not backing down when I had told the first wait person exactly what I wanted. When it came back the 3rd time, the manager brought the plate. They were finally right. The manager said she stood right there while the cook did the deed. The rest of the missing items finally showed up somewhere between the second and third try on the veggies. I will not be dining there again. A tip was not left because no one, save the manager, deserved one. This (expletive deleted) nonsense of always leaving a tip regardless of whether the wait person goes beyond the basic job does not incentivise wait people to take care of thier customers. The current tip rate is nonsense too. It used to be 10% now it is 20%. The theory is they need a raise. Well since tip % is based on the cost of the meal and meal prices have gone up, there is an automatic tip raise already built in. read more

BB is very particular about what kind of desserts she gets. I am ok with anything from the local 7-11 or mini mart, but that will not do for her. Her favorite dessert is the banana cream pie from Marie Callender's. So off we go once in a while to pick one up. The pie never fails to dissapoint. We have come here to pick up pies on Thanksgiving as well. The parking lot is spacious, and the inside has a nice vintage feel and look to it. It's been a loooooooong time since I was here , I saw their sign where it says Salad bar for $17.99 , decided to walk in (Big mistake) , not sure who's idea was that ? Grew up visiting Marie Callenders with my family and getting a pie was a tasty treat. I recently went and got a banana cream pie. Service at the counter was great, but I don't know what happened to the pie flavor. I haven't gotten one in many years, but remembered the pie tasted a lot better back then. I brought my mom here a few months back for the first time and we had a great dinner. Chicken pot pie was great and so was the salmon. Reminded us of the MCs that used to be in Glendale, Chula Vista, Del Mar, and Encinitas which we visited often. Shortly after our visit, my wife and I were in the area and decided to stop by for lunch. While the food was very good, the men's bathroom was gross! I have seen dirty bathrooms before but this one even had doo doo on the floor! Unless it had just happened, surely someone could check the bathrooms on a more regular basis before someone sees "it" on the ground. Came here for team lunch with our dental team and it was nice to have some comfort food options and it was right around the corner so being close is a bonus! They can definitely accommodate larger parties easily. The interior is definitely an older style restaurant but clean and cozy. The lunch crowd was busy and the waitress was working a big section. We had ordered a Banana Meringue Pie for Thanksgiving and had a pickup date/time of Wednesday, one day earlier at 12noon. Boy was I impressed!!! They had a popup tent pickup area for their pre-ordered Thanksgiving feasts, and a designated pickup area for those who had pre-ordered pies. Not only that, but they had an updated availability board for all the pies which they had available to purchase. The check-in process was very simple and fast, I picked up my pre-ordered pie, AND was able to order a 2nd pie which wasn't pre-ordered and had wrapped up the entire process in under 5 minutes from arrival to departure. All the staff were very nice & helpful. The only thing which wasn't smooth was the parking situation and the vehicle ingress/egress surrounding the restaurant. Now I highly doubt they get similar traffic such as this on days other than Thanksgiving, Easter, Mother's Day, Christmas Eve and so on. Overall, huge praise to Marie Callendar's for making pie and Thanksgiving feast meal pickup as simplified as possible for us patrons! I'm very impressed! read more

On the bright side, this place fixed a family argument that was taking place. My wife and I took our kids to eat here. We have had fond memories of the food, most specifically the pies, and wanted to return. However, the service was immediately awful. There was one young lady working with checking out the pie counter customers who was pleasant. Outside of her, the front staff was not welcoming. Furthermore, our waiter was probably one of the worst servers I've had in San Diego. Between consistently what we ordered or requested, bringing orders at an incredibly-slow pace, or just not being around, he made a very compelling argument for just eating fast food. Then there was the food. Once upon a time, my family and I enjoyed it. But, again, the food left us not concerned with taking home leftovers, and we weren't interested in finishing any of the food while we were there. Lastly, the pie. I used to absolutely love the double-cream blueberry pie. But, after having it again, it is clear that the baker who used to make the pies perfectly has left the building. We bought two SMALL take home Thanksgiving pies for the rip off price of $37.00 and they SUCK. The cherry pie is burnt to charcoal on the bottom and you couldn't even scrape it out of pie tin.
