But this review is for the pre-contract customer service, which is far and away the best we got from any other caterer I contacted! Samantha Reilly responded to our online request almost immediately, quickly came up with an amazing proposal, and endured several rounds of emails and phone calls as we looked for every little way to bring down the total costs. She was completely understanding of our budget concerns, didn't shame us at all for exploring even the craziest options (like providing our own ice, disposable dishes, and rental equipment!!); every time I called her, she remembered exactly who I was and always followed up quickly. I should also say that although costs were the reason we had to go with another company, Carriage Trade offers completely reasonable prices for their services. The only way the other company was able to lowball them was because they're an industrial-sized place that owns their own rental equipment (a big deal at our reception venue, which doesn't even provide tables and chairs!) If only I had another thousand dollars at my disposal, I would have readily opted for the personalized service of a smaller company like Carriage Trade. She even recommended the must-have knives and where to get them without breaking the bank. She customizes the class on the fly depending on your skillset and wants. I think it's great. But working with Carly was stiff. Communication broke down at times with her over email when collecting insurance for vendors and trying to schedule our rehearsal walk through with our coordinator. When we toured they mentioned that we could have someone play the piano with prior permission. We got said permission from Carly only to find out that said person needs to have day of insurance. The person we had in mind to play was our friend who is a musician but we didn't want to make them or us pay $120 just so he can play piano for 30 minutes. So that was annoying as we wished the insurance part was mentioned prior because it sounded like someone could casually play if we just notified her first. So we scrapped that. Given the historic status of the house I understand the rules but at times the way they were enforced or communicated felt unnecessary or cold given the event. They also don't recommend getting ready in the house because the outlets aren't reliable so FYI for your timeline there. Parking is also an issue so valet is required but that's just a La Jolla classic. In the contract it's stated that music is "monitored throughout the night" and if it exceeds certain decibels they'll shut it down... I found that interesting... and honestly stressful as a bride who spent thousands to rent this space and is happy to be respectful to rules but again the manner they're provided and enforced... If I had to do it over again would I have my wedding here? Not sure. Made for beautiful photos but I think the "fun" aspect of the day would've been easier enjoyed somewhere else because the entire time these rules are hovering over you...
