My husband saw this cafe and wanted to try it out. We brought along our children as well. What I liked about the cafe is that it was nice and cozy without being cramped. The waitress was pleasant and our menu was already on the table for us to browse through. They have a great menu section without it being overwhelming. The kid's menu is very minimal. I actually preferred the limited menu because our children can take waaay too long to choose something. They ended up getting the pancakes (Mickey Mouse shaped with chocolate chips) with my daughter choosing a sausage patty and my son choose the bacon strips. My husband chose the Northwest scramble with diced potatoes and a homemade biscuit while I chose the California omelet with a side of pancakes. I really liked the flavor and size of the pancakes. The omelet was delicious and cheesy. I tried my husband's scramble and it was delicious, the eggs were slightly overcooked but not horribly. It was all around an enjoyable meal and atmosphere. Great local spot for breakfast and lunch. The staff is always super friendly and efficient. I love the hand cut french fries way too much. Little touches like the gluten free tortilla options and the non-styrofoam to go containers make me feel good about my choices. Definitely not too cool for school, ggood for kids and families or a study date. they are still working out a few kinks, but the new proprietor is very friendly and aims to please. Yeah, Oliver's is safe, it's clean, has indoor seating with a television and free refills on drinks. Sounds pretty safe to me. This place offers great service, cute wait staff, and an awesome meal at a reasonable price. They cook the meat on site, have house cut fries and awesome chips and coleslaw. I feel like Mom cooked my lunch when I eat here, although, my mom's soups were never so good, and we also didn't get fresh cooked chicken or turkey in our sandwiches. Just give it a try. The location is quaint. Staff is friendly, professional, and personable. Food is really delicious. Lots of options. I particularly like how there's fresh flowers on the tables. Oliver's Cafe was very busy when we arrived. The food was good, portions were large (2 meals worth for some), very cheesy eggs. But the service is what will bring us back. Everyone was so nice and went above and beyond to make sure we had an enjoyable dining experience. I walked into an empty establishment, put my order in first, and got completely ignored for 45 minutes as I watched everyone who came in after me get served. Finally the waitress came to me and said that my order "never got put through" even though I heard her and the cook talk about the extra to go order that I had put through. I don't know who used to own this place, but they probably did a better job and that's why the rating is so high. But I'm still here, waiting for my free food now that the waitress had to re-take. There is a farmers market a block away from this place every Sunday from 10-3 and this is the one of two places people can go sit down and eat on this side of town. And yet, on Sunday when the tables are full they have one cook and one waitress. So obviously the owner is too cheap to hire appropriate staff because there is no "help wanted" sign on the window. I won't be coming back, until whatever inevitably takes its place. read more

BEWARE! Don't Go! This review is about the integrity/behavior of the owner & his establishment. The owner (also our waiter), informed us they offer G.F. bread & G.F. tortillas. I ordered one coffee with honey. He brought the coffee and 1/2 of teaspoon of honey in a teensy paper cup. The coffee smelled sour, so I didn't drink it. It was 2pm, clearly the coffee had been on the burner since breakfast.That is forgivable. He returned, we ordered one $9.00 quesadilla to be made with a G.F. tortilla. He began to sigh. We were confused because it states on the menu that you can substitute G.F. tortillas. After asking what was up, he left our table & returned with a very small tiny tortilla (mini-taco size) & a huge tortilla that literally spilled off the dinner plate that he held it on. I said "Yes, I see there's a difference, could you maybe make the order with 2 of the tiny G.F. tortillas in lieu of the enormous flour tortilla?" He stumbled and said "NO, well, yes, but I'm going to charge you for it." He was very rude. We told him we saw the $1.50 that's in the menu for the G.F. tortilla, adding that we'd planned on paying that charge. Correcting us, he argued arrogantly; "No, I must charge you for TWO UPGRADES on one plate!" Confused again, we asked him to explain. Condescendingly, he informed us that he couldn't possibly give us two tiny tortillas to equal the same portion as jumbo quesadilla that he offers in the menu without charging more than the $1.50 that is posted inside his menu. He said we'd have to pay $1.50 for each of the mini-g.f. tortillas - making it an extra $3.00 on top of the already overpriced $9.00 quesadilla. His rudeness and greed were off putting. We asked him to give us another minute to decide. It didn't feel good being there anymore so, we decided to leave. As we stood up, we told him that we decided we weren't going to order, and he shouted all the way across the diner while talking to another patron: "Hey, you have to pay for your coffee!" He was gesturing to the untouched sour coffee. Life is too short to ever visit this experience of greed and selfishness. Pay for the untouched sour coffee!!? Think again, Oliver. Was it worth it to lose customers? Was it worth that we will pass on our nightmare experience? Too many choices in PDX to go here. read more

Some friends from out of town were in Portland for the New Year's holiday and we wanted to have a late breakfast before they headed out of town on New Year's Day. We found out Oliver's was open that day and the reviews seemed good overall so we headed over. Arrived at 10am, absolutely no wait at all, scored a table by the window. Friendly service and nice atmosphere. I ordered the biscuit breakfast sandwich, added bacon and avocado plus a side of hash browns. The biscuit was one of the best I've had, so moist and flavorful. They nailed my bacon request of super duper crispy which seems to be quite challenging for a lot of restaurants so I was extra happy. The hash browns were perfectly cooked as well. My friends all enjoyed their food too and I will definitely try the breakfast burrito one of them ordered next time I'm there because I will for sure be coming back for more yummy food. read more

Well, we went from an upscale cafe with superb quisine to a sushi bar and now this. One would think that when an owner opens a place already decorated in a 5 star fashion they would be able to bring the taste of the food up to the decor, especially when the rich owners aquired everything for free. A place like this should not be given the time of day. Came here as we were passing through the area based on the other reviews. Did NOT live up to the four star average. My husband had to go to the counter twice to get his coffee cup refilled (and he's not demanding when it comes to coffee, his cup sat empty for quite a while). The food was just okay. Eggs were very greasy, ham was dry and the rest was just fine. We waited and waited and waited for our ticket to pay and ended up having to go to the counter to get that as well. Ok, let's get real. I was here just after opening and it sucked. I was recently back, many months later. The food is average. The coffee still sucks. I know that the Lents neighborhood doesn't have much to offer so this place must seem like a dream. Also many of the enthusiastic commenters here are affiliated with the business upstairs. The insurance company upstairs happens to be owned by the owner's husband. Their employees often eat in Oliver's and have meetings there. I was privy to this information while dining there. I see a few of them here. I recognize their names and faces from my time there. Too funny. Of course that doesn't mean that they are being dishonest in their reviews. I always tell people, just like you have a relationship with your dentist, or your insurance guy, you should have a relationship with your restaurant. Portland is not our home port, we're only here for a week, but this is our third trip to Oliver's. The staff is very friendly and the food is great, so rather than take a risk on an unknown, we built a relationship with Oliver's. I had the bacon pancakes every time, they're baconny and sweet, a little greasy but in a good way. Karalee had the biscuits and gravy, which she simply devoured. Both dishes are available in small and large sizes, the small being more than adequate with a split side of hash browns. The cafe is in an office-type building and, externally lacks a little of the Portland charm, and I find the coffee a little weak, but I tend toward strong coffee, so I won't hold it against them. If you're looking for a regular place, with consistently good food and very nice staff, I recommend building a relationship with Oliver's, you won't be disappointed. read more
