It was an EARLY morning drive from Salem to deliver my teen for a 6 am flight at PDX. We left the house at 3:30 and I waited until she got through her TSA check and boarded at 5:30 before leaving. As I began my trip home, I realized I needed a jolt of java to keep me going and referred to Yelp for recommendations. Jenni's was open and a quick trip off the interstate. It's a cozy little spot with a small dining room, outdoor space and local offerings. The owner greeted me, and explained that she was baking more pastries after being nearly depleted, but there were several breads and scones available in addition to her breakfast menu. She also has an extensive selection of flavored Torani syrups to make the perfect cup. She'd explained that most of small coffee spots closed over Covid, but that she made a point to keep her hours for shift workers, and was one of the few remaining in Portland. A full meal would've put me to sleep, so I chose the berry scone and a caramel latte. She warmed my pastry and made sure I was pleased with my drink as a regular customer walked in and ordered his usual. The coffee did the trick keeping me alert and the berries burst of flavor with each bite of scone I took. As I pulled into my driveway, I smiled at the human connection and experience I had supporting another small business and was grateful for Yelp's resource guiding me there. We came just for coffee - apparently not this place's forte. Wish I'd read the reviews more carefully, but we were on the road and trying to avoid Starbuckets, religiously. Not much else serving coffee in this part of town. The coffee is terrible. Watery, bitter shots and over-steamed milk, with Hershey chocolate in the mochas. Blended drinks are made improperly, leaving syrup in the cup and large ice chunks that clog the straw. Steam wand and other surfaces are cleaned with a rag that looks to have been used for many, many other purposes before finding dubious service in a sanitary capacity at this cafe. Nothing some basic training couldn't fix, but I doubt that will happen in this case. I understand they make an ok sandwich. I understand the local church crowd supports them, and they are a community fave. All well and good. But I can't excuse bad coffee that fifteen minutes study and a half hour of practice would correct, however popular the store. I'm a former cafe manager; it's too much to see past for someone who for years trained others to serve great coffee and keep a clean store. Extra star for friendly service. I'd still go here rather than starbuckets, but I think there must be better coffee to be had... ...this neighborhood is SO primed for a good cafe, it's ridiculous. Zero competition. read more

Sweet hole in a wall coffee shop my boyfriend spotted as we were driving out towards deep SE Powell. There's an outdoor patio for breakfast and the overall atmosphere inside was very cute, and quaint... the employee was very welcoming and made sure out drink came out to what we wanted by asking about specific syrups and milk alternatives which I appreciated Definitely will come back, and stop by if we are heading out that direction. We got the Little Extra (2 eggs, 4 sausage links, country potatoes and toast), London Fog's with oat milk AND she was running a special where if you buy a coffee or tea drink she will throw in a homemade baked good for FREE! I went to Jenni's for the first time today. They have BLIND coffee which is some of the best I've tried around here! I have got some from the farmers market. I enjoyed the breakfast sandwich - very simple. I did not feel completely comfortable to eat there so I went to the park. Good for simple food and delicious coffee that's not pretentious. read more

Was looking for any cafe nearby that wasn't a Starbucks, Black Rock, Dutch Bros, etc. Found Jenni's, didn't expect much upon seeing it honestly. When I walked in it all changed. Jennie greeted me so well and sweetly, a genuine person. Customer service is outstanding, we spoke for a while about so many different things, she is AWESOME! And now for the main part obviously, food and drink is fantastic. Quality delicious fresh coffee, all pastries and ingredients for food fresh or from scratch, nothing frozen or pre-bought. She owns and operates, which is so rare since COVID began. It's refreshing getting served and taken care of by a locally owned and operated business that has such high quality food and drink as well. The five star reviews are surprising. We ordered an oat milk mocha and a black cold brew to go and they were so undrinkable we poured them out and got coffee elsewhere. They use cheap oat milk, Hershey's syrup, powdered white chocolate, and the espresso machine area looks like it hasn't had a good clean in a long time. Even the bleach rag looked gnarly. The espresso itself is just...bad. This was the first time I've disliked a black cold brew enough to pour it out. We really wanted to find a local coffee shop to love but we were very disappointed. I wish they used higher quality ingredients. Maybe the food is better (?) but don't come here for the coffee. One star for the coffee, an extra for the friendly staff. read more

My new favorite spot! Conveniently located off Powell and close to 205. I walked in the door and told Jenni that my roommate recommended the place, and she knew him by name and that it was his first day of nursing school. She immediately oriented us with the menu and specials with a warm welcome. You don't get that kind of hospitality elsewhere. Along with wonderful people who run the place, the regulars were friendly and kind as well. The atmosphere is cozy and I can't wait to try the patio out! I got the 2 egg breakfast, and the bacon was crispy, and the potatoes were nicely seasoned. I will be back for sure to try out the rest of the menu. Having just moved into the Powellhurst-Gilbert neighborhood my immediate thought was, "where's the coffee?" and although I found that at Jenni's Sacred Grounds, I also found a level of service and kindness that's rare nowadays. Jenni warmly welcomed me in, told me of all the specials on the board, described the popular ones at length and then allowed me to try my choice out before being obligated to pay for it. I got the breakfast bagel sandwich and it was delicious. Double shot of espresso was great as well. You can tell this shop is Jenni's passion project and you owe it to yourself to be apart of it.
