I called Olson Electric to perform a service at my business. I spoke with the owner early that morning and explained that one of the outlets had sparked and smoked and wasn't working and that another outlet went out as well. I asked if anyone was available to come and assess my problem and he scheduled technicians to come out the same day which was great. The technicians showed up after 3pm and I explained what happened to him again. He walked to the back and came back in less than 10 minutes and said, "You are good to go!" I was shocked because I just knew with the sparks and smoke it would be more work done. When I expressed my shock at how quickly he fixed the problem, he escorted me to the back and showed me where the switch had tripped. I explained that we tried flipping the switch on and off before I called and that didn't seem to work. He then explained that essentially I didn't push the switch back hard enough. He went to his truck came back with a ticket for $120. I was again shocked! I have had several service calls for maintenance on cars, air conditioning, plumbing and even electrical. Generally they charge a flat service call fee for coming out and before they perform any work they tell you what's wrong and what it will cost to fix it and you have the opportunity to decide how you want to move forward. This was not the case. $120 for 10 minutes of time and flipping a switch felt like robbery. I asked the tech... "Is this right?" and he said they charge a flat fee of $120 for coming out. I was floored, but I paid because they did fix my problem. But I decided to call the owner and express my disappointment in the ambiguity in how he charged for the services. When I looked him up online prior to calling, his rates were not posted on his web site. His response, "If you had asked me, I would have told you that was the rate." He then said " If you had asked about our 10% off for first time clients, I would have honored that too." Now I'll take responsibility for presuming he conducted business like all the other service providers I have used. Lesson learned, I should have asked. And maybe I should not have expected to get an assessment and quote prior to the work being done. But from a customer service standpoint,I found it disheartening that he blamed me for not being forthcoming about his rates. And the fact that he felt ok charging $120 for a 10 minute service call blew my mind. I would have expected to pay a fee for their time, travel and gas... but not $120! Oh.... And the icing on the cake... he gave me an example of how he helped someone over the phone with the same problem I had and saved her the $120. Wow! I wish I was that lady. So don't be like me and be sure to ask for your quote up front. And make sure you ask for the 10% first time client discount. read more

Olson Electric is the only electric company I will ever call. The first call to them was to repair the switch to my disposal. They repaired it quickly and efficiently - and cleaned up after themselves. While they were here, I mentioned two outlets that had not worked for some time. I was afraid it would be cost prohibitive for my budget at this time. I asked for an estimate anyway and was pleasantly surprised that I felt the price was reasonable. However, the repair would require pulling off some paneling thus requiring some carpentry and painting - more expense. I decided it was worth it, so I told the electrician to do the job. By the time the appoint time came, the electrician had thought through the process and had found a way of routing the wires without tearing out the wall. He did the wall and could have charged me the original estimate and I would never have known the difference. However, the charge was considerable less, and they also installed a light fixture for me. This company is honest, reasonable, professional, and dependable. And, they always clean up after themselves. read more

In October, I got bids to have my 1950's home electric service upgraded to meet code. I selected Gary Olson for the job. He thoroughly explained what would need to be done to bring the service up to code, unlike some of the other bidders. His written bid was detailed and easy to understand, and the amount was in line with the other bidders. Since it was still hot during that time, I was concerned about not having electricity at night during the work. He assured me they would complete the job in one day and have the electricity up by late that afternoon at the latest. The job required running wires both through the attic and the crawl space under the house. They completed the job that day and had the electricity running by 6 pm. Gary also contacted the city to have the inspector come out, which he did the next day. Had a breaker that would not reset. Olson responded quickly (same day)and sent Philip (next morning)to troubleshoot the problem. He found the breaker panel was not replaced correctly by solar panel installers. Philip removed and replaced the panel to fix the problem. Philip detailed the issue on his invoice, which I forwarded to the solar company. They agreed to reimburse me since it was their installers mistake. Olson are trustworthy professionals. read more
