Cod fish with potatoes and vegetables

My husband and I love Portuguese food. Last night, we decided to go to Bridgeport and have dinner at Omanel Restaurant. From the moment we walked in the door, we were made to feel welcome. Lisa, our server was exceptionally welcoming and competent. The food was authentic, perfectly cooked, fresh and tasty. We liked everything we ordered. We both had Ameijoas a Bulhao de Pato as an appetizer. What a delight! The Portuguese bread they gave us was perfect to soak up every bit of the garlicky sauce they were cooked in. Much to my surprise, the sauce had cilantro; I always expect Portuguese food to have parsley instead of cilantro. It was good, however, and definitely not overwhelming. My husband had grilled balcalhau with potatoes and vegetables on the side. I ordered one of the specials, which consisted of a variety of seafood in a tomato sauce. It came with white rice on the side. We shared a flan and had espresso for the perfect ending to this delicious meal. The portions were big. The ambiance was pleasant. We plan to return and hope that Lisa will be our server again.

    Bacalhau à Brás

One of my favorite restaurants in the area. Always great service and delicious food. My favorite is Bacalhau à Brás - salted cod, onions and matchstick size fried potatoes with eggs. My husband had the pork and clams. We ended with chocolate mousse and flan. They are both such rich and creamy desserts. We can't wait to go back.

The restaurant has a huge bar section which is totally sectioned off from the dining area. The bar is a bit dark and usually packed. I never really visit the bar area, the dining area is much more quiet. When visiting the restaurant I suggest you visit and come with some patience. During my several visits I have probably seen about two servers actually working the floor and as a result it may take some time to place an order and get your food. I don't really mind it because I have already come to expect it so it is fine especially when you consider the food is delicious and plentiful. In addition the prices make it an excellent value. I can honestly say I have not had a bad meal ever when we have visited. We have chosen to have dinner parties with 15-20 people and they do an excellent job in service and value. I visited the restaurant the other day to pick up some curbside dining and everything was perfect. They processed my payment ahead of time and I was able to pick up my food at their back door. If you want to change your dining options during these strange Covid 19 times give them a call you will not be disappointed. The steak, rice and fries was cooked perfectly-the right temperature and very flavorful. I ordered the Paella Valenciana and I loved it. The paella had a half lobster, shrimp, clams, mussels, scallops, chicken, pork and chorizo. I literally had enough food for dinner and two days worth of lunch. Give them a try I am sure you will like it.

We enjoy our meals at this restaurant. Nice little restaurant with big portions. We will definitely revisit.

    Most popular beer in Portugal

This place is as authentic as it gets. I ate here last night and the experience was so good I came tonight as well. Ordered the Bacalhau a Gomes de Sa (Salt Cod, Onions, eggs, and Potatoes) both nights. Amazing. Even the potatoes were two cuts above. As an appetizer, I ordered the shrimp. The garlic, pepper, parsley, and oil sauce was exquisite. Along with the Portuguese beer (Super Bock and Sagres) the flavors were so authentic I might as well be sitting at a restaurant in Braga. Bravo. Come here and enjoy the food.

The pork & clams here has always been the best! Can't believe this is my first time here for dinner. Sleeper spot, in the hood and unassuming- but the Portuguese food is as good as it gets! They do it right, big portions of savory fare. The Paella is legendary, but the turf is as good as the surf. More of a locals type of spot because of the locale, but don't pass up the chance at an authentic meal served by people that care about what they're doing. This place is the essence of what's amazing about Bridgeport!!!

We've been here several different times, trying different things. Veal Parm w/pasta, cod fish w/shrimp & Portuguese fries, & Bife a Portuguesa...ALL VERY DELICIOUS!!! If you want authentic Portuguese food served in authentic Portuguese plates/dishes..this is the place!

That being said, in order to eat the great food, one has to be able to order it!! When we arrived at the restaurant there were two other couples at tables in the dining area and the bar area had maybe eight or nine people. So it was by no means busy. We ordered drinks and we knew what we were going to order having been there multiple times, that was when we were ghosted by the waitstaff. Not sure if this was a miscommunication between one waiter to another or what happened. We waited for twenty minutes. No one, Nothing! During that time frame the other table received their food, and not even a glance over to meet the eyes to order. A few minutes later i finished the drink and at this point i had to flag a waiter who was seating another customer to bring me my check. A minute later (25 minutes since first contact) a waitress shows up. I explained that i would like my check that we were leaving. Paid and left for good. Shame and very disappointing that such a fine back of the house kitchen has such a dysfunctional front of the house. Can not rate the food this time as we could not even get to that point, so the rating reflects that. Very Disappointing. Wasted Talent!

The Best Jamaican Food on Earth…read more I've been coming here forever and the food is unlike anywhere else I have ever been. I have been to Jamaica and nothing is close. I have brought friends here who live/ lived in Jamaica and they are blown away. I also lived in the Jamacian area in Harlem and never found a Jamaican Restaurant even close to this place. The staff are friendly and get the food out quickly. There is almost a couple people there and they have no problem handling the traffic. Place definitely has a vibe. Bonus it is down by Seaside Park so when it's warm enough I love grabbing my food to go and eating it in the park. Food: -Jerk Chicken This is by far my go to. If you can't handle a LOT of heat then this is not for you. 1st time my wife had it she couldn't hang but I made her try it again and again and eventually she built a tolerance and absolutely loves it. -Curry Goat My 2nd Favorite. Not too much heat and very tasty. Careful of the bones but the flavor is incredible. If you can't handle the heat of the Jerk this is a great option. -Stewed Chicken Good option. I don't get it too often as I prefer the Jerk but if I'm not in the mood for the heat or just want to switch it up this is another amazingly flavorful option. -Jamaican Patty's All of them are great Spicy or Mild Beef, Chicken, Veggie I usually get a patty with my order and rotate my choice with my mood or what looks best that day. Final Thoughts If you haven't been to Rootsman you don't know what Real Jamaican Food is. Get here ASAP!! Caution: Food is Amazing & Addictive

Before I get into the review proper, I've noticed that many older reviews had mentioned this place…read morewas Cash Only. Based on my visit tonight, they now accept card since I was able to my debit on this one. This place is primarily take-out, but there's tables inside where you can eat in if you wish. I opted to just get my food and be on my way. But before that, I do want to mention that the guy behind the counter pointed out on my visit that not everything that the menu reads was actually in stock (my visit came at about 7:30 pm on a Tuesday night). He did at least have the courtesy of telling me what was available, to which I had opted for the jerk chicken. I didn't know this upon my ordering, but apparently this jerk chicken gets rave reviews here on Yelp. I don't order this kind of thing often, and the last time I went to a place to order jerk chicken the food and atmosphere did not turn out good, so I was hopeful I would at least have a better experience here. The place itself is unassuming in a way something similar to how a hole in the wall would be unassuming. One thing I will say in this place's favor is that the price is very fair for what you get. I only had to pay $16.32 for the meal which honestly isn't bad at all. And hey, at least the employee had decent manners. Upon arriving back at the Bridgeport Station to start eating, that was when I had realized something had gone wrong. When I got to the bag I was given the food in, the take-out container completely destroyed the bag, telling me that this was not packaged well at all. Imagine if I had tried to drive this back home and then found that! They could probably do with making some sort of effort reinforcing the packaging before packing into a paper bag. To make matters worse, when I had opened the container to start eating, the food exploded all over my shorts! Not fun! But I was able to eat enough to form an opinion. As for the meal itself, the jerk chicken comes with cabbage and rice. I would have liked to have the rice separate from the chicken, but that was apparently not an option. I was kind of bummed out about that since the last time I had jerk spice on rice it ruined the rice. I will say quality-wise the food was better than People's Choice over in Norwalk. The chicken was juicy and the rice was at least cooked properly. The taste of the rice I will say did not taste much difference from the chicken, so it's definitely doesn't stand out too much. The cabbage was a wet cabbage, not to the point of mush, but maybe the next level before that. Good thing the chicken was actually good jerk chicken, even though it's not de-boned. Would I walk 20 minutes to come eat here again? If I had to. So far I'd pick this over several others if I am in the mood for Caribbean food. Just some better packaging would be nice.
