I was so excited to see this place open because not many places here offer this type of seafood now. The food is excellent and I'll be back.

So, while there is no actual nearby pier, this area is very wet and full of earthen dams and dikes, and is a great place for fishing and hunting. This rustic restaurant has been around for decades in the hands of the same family. When we arrived at 6 p.m. the dining room was full but for the recently cleared table which we quickly took. Lori was our server. She was great from start to finish. We started with their small styro bowl of Crab Bisque. It was thick and tasty, and perhaps a tad salty. Liked it. I followed that with English style Fish & Chips, and my friend went with Fried Stuffed Flounder and Breaded Eggplant. I think mine was made with cod. With a splash of Heinz malt vinegar the taste and texture were decent, but not what I devoured visiting England. The coined potato medallions were very good dipped in tartar sauce. The stuffed flounder seemed prefabricated and frozen rather than fresh and made in their kitchen. It was not what we were hoping for. The atmosphere of Under the Pier was actually the better part of the experience. Maybe their oysters and other locally sourced crustaceans are the better way to go to avoid freezer boredom. They can hold 20-500 people for private events according to their website. The inside is dark and could use a bit of a refresh, but I wouldn't say it's close to the level of dive. It's certainly on the larger side compared to most bars in the area. The staff has always been nice, but service can get slow when the crowd size grows. Just the nature of things. Food wise the menu has a typical mix of pub grub - apps, soups, salads, sandwiches, burgers and several entrees. A friend was eating their jumbo Buffalo Shrimp off the starter menu and raved about them. I stuck to a Cheesesteak which was average but a deal at $9.50 -- the chopped steak was decent, cheese was good just needed a bit more. Hot peppers gave it some kick and the long roll was fresh. Their beer menu has around a dozen beers on tap. They dabble in more mainstream big beer/craft beer like your Goose Island IPA's/Lagunitas IPA, but do have a decent show of locals like Yards, Victory, Troegs and Weyerbacher. Bourbon wise I had a Knob Creek neat which was average price wise. The pour was on the generous side. Each time I've been here the crowds have been friendly and having a good time. The band we listened to was great and the sound was crisp. Five Four is a family friendly grill during the day and a fun place for adults later at night. Thanks guys!

A look at reviews from the last few years read of disappointment in the products available in their cold displays. A change was needed to inject new life and renewed quality into the good Capt'n. That has been accomplished. My recent visit demonstrated that management is actively engaged in rebuilding brand by focusing on returning everything that the seafood market was previously known for to their former glory, as well as expanding with high end crab adjacent goods, like packaged pastas, pierogi, sauces and Stock pound cakes. All this, and the smiling repartee from Mark, one half of the new team running the business. This shop may be small, but it is bright and friendly. Of course, the crab is excellent, especially in light of the fact that Chucky is no where near the Chesapeake and must have inventory all year, and not just in crab season. No whole live crabs in the house, but their thing is the cake that lump crabmeat can create. Several options depending on your taste are available. I purchased a quart of Cream of Roasted Corn & Crab Soup and sampled three large fresh Shrimp. The chowder was delicious, with lots of corn and shredded sweet crab. Maybe not quite as meaty as I have loved in Annapolis, the Eastern Shore or the Delaware Beaches, but compelling nonetheless. Maybe next time I will pick up some of the pierogi and pound cakes to create a full meal. 5 Crusty Stars and only five miles from home.
