Instagram made me go here. Supposedly the best babka in the city. I could smell the sweetness coming out from the store as I crossed the street. The store is small. Everything is sold by the pound including the babka. One pound fits perfectly into the square plastic container. You can see the layers of pastry folded into it. It's so ridge and fudgy like brownies. . I could barely see the pastry. 90 percent of it is chocolate. I warm up a slice of it in the microwave for 15 seconds and my goodness, it was ahmazing. It becomes more moist and the chocolate melts in your mouth. You can smell the sweetness too. It's perfect for any chocoholic. The lady at the counter was very helpful. She gave me a plastic glove to pick up the pastries. I got a couple of rugelach which I heated up in the microwave and it's delicious too, it's like a mini version of the babka. I live in Florida and ordered a choc bobka thru Goldbelly. I was extremely disappointed in the utter garbage that was sent to me. My husband of almost 51 years surprised me with this gift for my birthday/Mother's gift. I cut a slice and that was the last slice I took. It was dry and floury, The only good thing was there was a lot of chocolate. If I still lived in N.Y. I would have returned it. I am a home baker and I miss the great desserts from N.Y. The babka I received had no tam (taste), just dough,chocolate and flour. Dissapointed and dissatisfied. It's unfortunate that you spend good money for an inferior product. Oneg Bakery was unfortunately disappointing. I picked up some chocolate rugelach towards closing time but assumed they were freshly baked in the morning. The rugelach were very dry and stale, which was disappointing as this place has rave reviews & I love rugelach. I remember my childhood fondly when I would go to Shloimy's Bakery in Borough Park with my mom to get their fantastic rugelach that was not dry at all & absolutely delicious at all times of the day...Oneg unfortunately missed the mark. Babka was unbelievable! It was so chocolatey and dense in the best way. It seemed like we got a really big piece, but it did not last long. It was a small shop, but the selection was overwhelming (also in the best way). The employee was very nice and gave us a glove and bag and told us to fill it up. Yes, this is the only Babka worth eating in this city. Nay, the world. It's rich and chocolatey and all the other things everyone says about it. But the real star of this little bakery is the onion rolls: a beautifully baked challah dough packed with sautéd onions inside of it. This is not an onion bun like you'd make a sandwich out of. This babka is so heavy the M train fell through the el on Marcy Avenue as I lugged it home. How does it taste? Like it was baked by Hashem. This is the FAAFO of babkas. Rich, crunchy, creamy, layered to perfection. Who'd a thunk such decadence would come from such a humble-looking shop? I've never tasted so much chocolate in a babka. This is the OG babka spot. The babka is huge so they sell them a portions. We took away a half portion of babka which was still twice the size of most other babkas. A half babka probably feeds about 8. I'm not sure if they sell quarters or even eights, but that would be closer in size to what I'd typically buy from elsewhere. The babka is ultra rich, super dense, yet not sweet. It's actually a bit on the bitter side and sort of gave me some raisiny notes. OPEN FOR BUSINESS!! Not sure why 'Yelpers report this location has closed' because as of 9/3/2021 they are very much still open! Seeing that notification gave me a panic attack because I will detour out of my way to get their Babka whenever I'm in New York. I called the shop to make sure they were open and the man who answered had no idea why I'd even think to ask. "Of course we're open! Come!" He beckoned. I went in person and confirmed. They are in fact open :) Owners/staff are super friendly, and the babka is delicious. Best in New York from what I can tell. Freshly baked and rich with chocolate. I gift it to my Jewish friend(s) and it's always a hit. The smell of the shop is breathtaking -- all the breads and baked goods send me to special place (see photos). I wish I took pictures of my goods, but I couldn't wait and dug in. I got these mini pastries that looked like a crescent roll and another one that looked like a cinnamon roll. But in all honesty, I came here for one thing.... Their Babka. I walked 2 miles from my hotel to this Bakery and walked my goods 2 miles back. It was definitely worth it. The babka was loaded with chocolate it was more chocolate than bread for sure. Swirls and swirls or never ending chocolate it was an absolute dream. Yooooooo this was the bomb! So I don't think I've ever had babka before. My friend was raving about this place and that she had to take me here before I head back home. She's a great friend. It's a small place so we waited until the person inside left as a courtesy. My friend told me they sell the babka per lb. I decided to get 1/4 of the whole loaf of the double babka to take home. I wanted to try the other pastries but man that babka was heavy! When we got home, my friend gave me a slice and I heated up a little bit and that was a great decision. The caramelization was mmmmm so good. A thin slice is filling but you'll keep wanting for more! The double chocolate one was the way to go. If you're wondering how long it lasts if you put in the fridge, it'll last for more than a week. Yes I was able to practice some restraint in devouring all of it in 3 days of maybe less. One Bakery. Finally made it to the Babka promised land in the heart of orthodox Williamsburg Brooklyn. This is a no bull no frills orthodox jewish bakery that is known to make some of the best babka in NYC. You walk in and you tell the man behind the counter what you want and you leave satisfied. For some reason on my only visit here I went and ordered some different version of babka which was not like many of the pictures on here. It wasn't big or square. I got some sort of a flat loaf. Taste wise whatever it was, it tasted like a babka but didn't look like what I was normally accustomed to. It was gooey, chocolatey, and definitely tasted fresh. Wowza! My slice was $11! The babka here is amazing! It is very chocolatey and was pretty fresh. The edges were nice and crispy as well! I spent about $20 for a 1/4 loaf and it was more than enough for me! They threw in a free rugelach with my order -They also have donuts (though I was in a rush and didn't snag one) Cons: -Small place, no seating -- Chocolate Babka ($13.35 for a "slice") It's more accurate to say this is sold by the chunk, given the heaping portion they give you. As everyone has mentioned, it's incredibly chocolatey. The texture is thick, chewy, and a grainy from sugar so it tastes like chewy brownie batter. You risk choking on this if you eat it as fast as I did, but if this was the last thing you ate, you'd probably be pretty okay with it. There was a bit of white thread in my chunk, so take a quick look before diving in. The Rugelach is not super sweet (which is nice) but the texture is closer to that of a dinner roll. I love that with each bite, you get a bit of crunch, a bit of chewy softness, that heavenly chocolate-y sweetness but also rounded out a bit by some saltiness. It's dense, it's decadent, it's rich. I've been dreaming of this legendary babka for weeks. The gooey center, the layers of dough, the flaky crust around the edges. Got here early in the morning on a Friday when it's freshly made for Shabbat, the street so busy with people shopping and cooking for the big Friday night meal. This babka is the most chocolatey of all in New York and it's so dense, you can actually stretch it like a fruit roll-up! The employees are kind and the walls are lined with shelves of fluffy challah, cinnamon rolls and braided chocolate danishes. My surprise favorite: the braided chocolate danish! Less rich and chocolatey than the babka, but fresh and fluffy and fudgey still. I'be ordered the full sized babka five or so times and it is consistently excellent. Other babkas do not compare in my opinion. Hands-down the best babka in NYC, which, by definition, means the best on the planet. Keep your fancy-shmancy butter-based babka--sometimes things are meant to be pareve. Try both the chocolate and double-chocolate and decide from there whether or not you have a favorite. In addition, the onion pastry is delicious, as are the doughnuts. They also have a nice selection of challah, including spelt. Oneg really IS a "heimishe bakery"; the staff is very pleasant. And incidentally, it's not a far walk from the Hewes St. station on the M--don't bother with Google's bizarre directions to get off at Marcy Ave. and take a bus from there. I actually looked at a map and went with Hewes St., only to be told by the Oneg guys not to take Marcy Ave. Great minds really DO think alike. read more
