Moishe's Kosher Bakery's Awesome Chocolate Kakosh - Think Babka's Little Sister!
    Mike R.

How can one not love Moishe's, this old school Kosher bakery?! Old school echt kosher bakeries have been a dying breed in this city, so ecstatic every time I have the chance to shop Moishe's and never disappointed with their baked goods and friendly service. With Gideon's in Hudson Heights and Moishe's other location on 2nd Avenue in the East Village both shuttered, a true kosher bakery gem like Moishe's on Grand is cherished. It's become my go-to place for the best real traditional kosher chocolate babka, seeded rye, pumpernickel, and chocolate cigars. Other kosher classics like rugelach and hamantaschen can also be found, plus those wonderful cookies by the pound. One story to share about how wonderful, friendly service is I've experienced at this Moishe's was when, about a year ago, I came in to pick up (my favorite) chocolate cigars to share with some young friends visiting from Europe. I paid the elderly woman behind the counter. Then, as she returned my change, I said, "Thank you." She rapidly replied, "You don't need to thank me. I thank you - you are the customer!" There's something humbling about her genuine grateful response when you compare it to young people who can't even call you to the register with "next guest" but lazily just say "following" and no form of gratitude after they ring you up. Her outstanding line couldn't stop me smiling. (It also made me want to thank her even more!) There only some small changes to Moishe's that I've noticed over the years. With the pandemic, many individual pastries like chocolate cigars are all wrapped in plastic. Also, their yummy cookies by the pound selection doesn't include anymore (those oh so delicious) lace cookies. This time, in addition to my seeded rye and pumpernickel, I decided to try something I don't recall ever trying - chocolate kakosh. Kakosh is a rolled filled sweet bread, similar to a babka, but flatter. (See pic. Think babka's little sister!) While I first spotted poppy kakosh in the case, I decided to go for slices of the chocolate one. Boy, I'm glad I did! Their chocolate kakosh is amazing! Definitely recommend going to Moishe's for their breads, babkas, kakoshes, cookies and other baked goods! Looking forward to returning soon!

In a far corner of a Lower East Side neighborhood, is a remant of a once thriving Jewish community. Moishes still serves up black and white cookies, long associated with bakeries past. This is an outlet of the larger main store that was on Second Avenue Sadly that store is long gone. An elderly woman conversing with local residents got behind the counter to ask me how much of the checkered chocolate layer cake I wanted as I gave her a signal of where to cut a piece of the loaf for me. I am so happy.

I love old school bakeries and throw backs to old New York but this place did NOT deliver figuratively and literally. We popped in for some Sunday danish and what we got tasted like it was baked on Tuesday. It was so stale it totally crumbled. The icing chipped off. 2.75 per danish - they had cheese and fruit. I think we got raspberry but it was so old I honestly couldn't tell. They need to circulate the danish and throw out the old ones.

Mrs. Schreiber's recipes bring me back to my childhood. I met the kindest neighbors and enjoyed the chocolate Mandelbrot and the cherry Hamantashcen.

It's definitely a worn in bakery with no bells or whistles to speak of, but for a timeless kosher treat that won't set you back much, Moishes does the trick. They're probably most well known for their black and white cookies, though you'll find all the classic jewish baked goods on their shelves. Cash only, so don't even think of flashing a credit card.

Best chocolate babka in NYC. Plus, the staff has a lot of razzle dazzle banter and gossip. It's fun and yum.

The orange has a base made of chocolate Rice Krispies. All of them have more fruity filling than the mousse. They are very fragile. I recommend eating there if you can. Finding can be a challenge because it's busy and there aren't many seats. I got mine to go just to be taken to the park across the street . The mushroom kind are totally ruined. It has strawberriy jelly and it was a mess. The orange one was almost ruined too. The mango has some diced mangoes. I devoured three of them instantly. Definitely come back to try more.

There was no place to sit down because of how busy it was but the staff kept the line moving quick enough. The place still seemed reasonably stocked with their desserts and treats, despite the late afternoon time that I arrived. I ordered 4 different treats to go and they're packed in small box individually. Unfortunately, they didn't quite stay intact during my trek back to my hotel and were tumbled around in the boxes. Nonetheless, the taste and flavors held up well and even after a few days in the fridge. The yuzu daisy has this vivid pastel yellow-pink base and adorable gelatinous yellow gem atop a white flower. The yuzu gives a subtle infusion of tart that is balanced out by the light delicate skin texture of the rest. Sitting atop a thin round rice crispy. I loved the red mushroom one which is a creamy pink mousse inside the cap. The stalk is a thin porcelain-white chocolate light base also filled with a rich cream. Adjacent are two cute little tree nuts. The orange and mango have such vivid colors and are aesthetically pleasing too. Just like the previous ones, their delicate chocolate exterior houses a rich tarty mousse-y filling. I think the mushroom has a better balance and variety of flavors. Although I don't eat mousse treats often, I look forward to trying some of the other ones in the future, like the blueberry, banana and cloud.

This used to be my favorite Italian bakery. I haven't been to this bakery in years like ten years…read moresince I was a teenager. Today I decided to make a special trip to go here to grab a few goodies. I forgot how small the place was and how low the ceilings were. That wasn't an issue though. The place was nice and cakes were stacked neatly. What was surprising to me is that they don't have any cookies laid in the front display. It's all placed in the back almost hidden. I was deeply disappointed with their cookie selection. It was deeply surprising that they don't sell the butter cookies that had jam in the middle and dipped with chocolate on one side with sprinkles. I did ask the clerk and even showed him a pic of what I was looking for and he said they never sold them. They only had the linzer cookies and they didn't look so good. They also did not have the lobster tail. They did have the sfogliatelle which they also called a lobster tail. I thought they were not the same? Some bakeries sell both and they are definitely not the same. I did end up buying one of their sfogliatelle with cream and some rugelachs. The sfogliatelle was good but the rugelachs tasted slightly underbaked. It did taste fresh though unlike many I've had in other bakeries. However, for $28 per pound, I wouldn't get it again. For those not having lobster tail and not having the Italian cookies, I will have to give Veniero's a low rating. I never thought an Italian bakery would not carry staples. Very disappointed. I need to find another Italian bakery now.
