Came to Sander's to get some kosher baked goods for my coworkers. I really wanted to get some donuts, but it was too early in the morning, and they were still baking them. Ended up getting some rugelach that were fresh from the oven. The rugelach were a hit in the office. The staff really liked them. My coworker who was kosher really liked them too. A bunch of people just kept eating them throughout the day. The rugelach were delicious. The chocolate was good. The pastry wasn't too sweet. The vanilla ones were great too, but I really liked the chocolate ones the best. They have a dress code that they post in front of the store before you go in. Make sure you wear closed toe shoes, cover your knees, and shoulders. It shouldn't be a problem in the winter though. If you want some good baked goods, Sander's is a great option. If you're like me and wanting to pick up some kosher pastries, I would check which certification your friend/coworker accept as there are many they may or may not eat. read more

We were unable to secure a whole babka, so we settled for a tray of assorted desserts including some pieces of babka. Would have preferred to give the full babka a shot. Early bird gets the worm. (My inner lonely fat girl was craving sweets that day. What can I say?) If you're not Hasidic, you may feel a little out of place here. But the staff is still very warm and friendly, and won't try to push their religious beliefs onto you. Do yourself a huge favor and avoid this place on Friday afternoons, though, as it's sheer bedlam then. I was there on a friday afternoon it was a madhouse, but then again madhouse would be an under statement. Seriously MADHOUSE. There was a cake on this cart that you were able to card yourself which looked enticing until some guys cellphone fell on top of it. Gross. People pushing me over I couldn't reach anything... It gets insane. The cookies were not that great or special in anyway. The challah bread was different than what I like. It was crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, I prefer soft and fluffy and I think there is a much better Bakery in Brooklyn that does it better. I think the sufganiyot(Jelly filled hanukkah donuts were amazing and very traditional. I don't advise going there during "Pre- shabbat" hours. Jelly heart shaped cookie was probably the best thing there. The regular jelly filled cookies were too crunchy for my liking. Probably won't go back. read more

"It's still open! We have to stop!" I'd never heard of this place, but an acquaintance of mine--a local--said we had to drop everything and slide in before close. Excellent choice! Despite arriving shortly before close, the establishment smelled like fresh sugar, as if they were still churning out treats. I had picked up some cookies for myself, and to bring back home. Everyone I've given them to has said they're nothing short of great. We're talking simple sugar cookies with sprinkles, but minds everywhere have been blown by the quality. I'd also picked up some Mayim Chaim ginger ale. I'd never heard of the brand, but it was great! Tasted like *real* soda. When we left after a few minutes, we noticed my pal was so excited to nab some goodies, he'd left his car on...and unlocked outside. Super delicious chocolate babka! We were visiting from the Philadelphia area and stopped in a couple of times. Brought home two pieces of chocolate babka and other pastries. Everything was great. I ate most of the one babka myself, my husband and son cerebral very happy about that because they wanted more. I froze the second babka and will take it out for break the fast. Came here spontaneously on a Thursday evening with a friend and was so pleasantly surprised by this gem of a bakery. Rows and rows of delectable Jewish pastries filled the walls. I combed the options and settled on an assortment of rugelach and black and white cookies. But that is not what should bring you to Sander's. Come for the hospitality and warm service. The owner and his mother are eager to tell you about the different types of pastries and help you with your purchase. This bakery is worth my detour out of north Williamsburg. Terrific bakery on vibrant Lee Avenue. Outstanding service and pastries all around. Pro tip: they take credit card for purchases over $5. The first time I came here was purely accidental. Oneg was closed for the summer and I needed a babka. This place is a gem. It's modern and clean. They have a great selection of Jewish pastries, and a freezer filled with an assortment of spelt pastries. I don't think I've seen this many spelt goodies in NYC before. Sander's has recently renovated their place in to a newer and more modern, rustic style bakery -although the size remained the same and is a bit small- with a new storefront and displays, gone is that old shabby store front and showcases that where already crying from being so old and in is a whole new picture pleasant on the eye... (I'll leave it up for you to check it out.) Sander's specializes in Bakery stuff solely, unlike other bakeries that focus on a wide range of items like sandwiches, salad bars, coffee etc. and therefore lose focus over the main thing. Sanders specializes in mastering the art of baking the best bakery stuff in town. (Talking about "Yoely Town") But the one thing that they excel in, and I have never tasted anyone making it better then them, is their Napoleon cake (Some call it mille-feuille) which is a square serving of puff pastry on top and bottom filled with some Vanilla/Boston cream, you name it filling, and let me tell you that it is "DELICIOUS" they have it in a verity of three toppings which are confection sugar, black and white chocolate and Crunch with confection sugar. The crunch is my favorite one, however they do charge .25 cents more for that one but I think it's totally worth. (Wife claims that she tastes the extra quarter when she eats it...) read more

I'll tell you the truth, I went here only because Oneg was closed for summer vacation. But I wasn't disappointed, I still got food in the same spirit. It's self-service, pay by weight, with the usual assortment of goods. I got mostly rugelach, and some twisty thing that may or may not have been kichel. Everything was about right, rugelach were large and had the right amount of tenderness and flavor, albeit they might have been a bit on the dry side. They're in what I think is a hasidic style---a bit puffier and with the layering visible in the exterior, rather than the compact style of some more expensive places---but it's a good representative of the genre. read more

I solely went to this bakery because the owner said on their business page that they have the BEST rainbow cake. Let me tell you something .... it's not.....by far. When you must package your 'rainbow cake' and the same boxes stay on the shelf...let alone for a few days to a week...it's NOT fresh nor can be considered 'the best.' I didn't find many of the baked good here appealing but my wife grew up with them an was ecstatic for the so brightly colored rainbow cookies and several kinds of marble cake. They also had black and white cookies, kippelech (similar to rugelech), tiny cheese Danish and many other items. read more

An old style kosher bakery in a newly styled store. Went on Sunday thinking correctly that it wouldn't be packed. Bought the chocolate babka or I think that it was. an individual one/ not a slice of a larger bread. It was delicious!! There were other items that looked similarly good. Cheese danish got the goyish thumbs up! Mandel bread very almond tasting and perhaps too sweet for my taste. Everything looked great and pricing seemed very reasonable. Authentic! In what's become typical Jewish baking it's hard to get past the white flour. It is light and fluffy and white but also dense and filling and substantial despite feeling somewhat vacuous, and, umm, insubstantial. It fills you up and then leaves you a little hanging, too, wondering with what exactly you are filled: "is it air? I can physically feel the material of what I ate but there is a part of it that leaves me feeling empty.." It gives a sense of being firm and reflective in its qualities but also light and indifferent. I notice it but can move on from it, too, at my will. Leave it to Jewish baking to create a theoretical debate about the nature of the bread that was just eaten and from there to determine it's qualities of substance and to decide whether or not it was filling or not filling. "Well, It tasted good and had wholesome superficial qualities and if I wanted full wholesomeness in integrity I'd being eating the whole wheat matzah I buy during Passover.." But, for now, this is nice.. The challah here I like very much. The outside is slightly firm but the inside is soft and pulls apart easily. I can feel its plainness giving it depth in its chewiness. In its flavor I taste the fire from it being baked, the salt, and the wheat mixed with small amounts of egg. If you are so inclined, you can ask if they will sell you straight mohn. Mohn is a poppy seed butter that is mushed poppy seeds mixed with sugar and/or honey, and used primarily as a filling for breads and pastries such as babka and rugelach. In appearance it is shiny and looks like grainy tar, or caviar. The taste is highly sweet but once you get past the sweetness the astringency of the seeds begins to reveal itself; there are two contrasting dynamic pulls of the intensely sweet and moist, and the deeply dark and dry. In effect, the mohn, after ingesting large quantities of this poppy seed paste, hits the nerve at the back of the neck and the body and mind start to feel relaxed with a glazed sedate feeling of haziness. It makes for a nice spread and goes well with the challah. The cookies and rugelach are nice, too. I especially like the chocolate ones, as the bittersweetness stands out interlaced amongst the blandness of the dough, which is what I would want from a Jewish baked treat. The rainbow cookies are amazing.. that raspberry filling between the layers was delicious. During the moment it's all great (as long as not too much is eaten!) and then we accept what we've enjoyed and then move on to what's next. read more

Outstanding rye with caraway seeds, simply superlative. Just the right edge of sourness. Had to travel to Oslo to find its equal and the Norwegian bread is of course, not kosher. The chocolate roll is marvelous too - a yeast dough, rolled around a chocolate filling. Heaven, worth the schlep out there. A pilgrimage. The challah has a crisp exterior, a style much admired in Hungary, but I don't care for it, too hard for my taste. Excellent challah is available elsewhere, within a block or two. read more

As you walk down lee ave the aromas pouring out in the streets from those old ovens .take you to a mystical small town from your grandparents bedtime stories .and yes ! the taste does not disappoint . The decor has changed to an updated nostalgic look but the bakery itself is the same.The cream cakes are delicious and fresh and the babke gives an ode to the dough meaning it's not overly chocolaty.... The Challahs taste like bubies Challahs not sweet just crispy from the outside and fluffy not heavy from the inside. The cookies are a must try especially the pink fudge linzer tart and sandwich.Don't expect to taste a buttery flavor in any of the above as they don't use dairy only on stuff that Is specified according to kosher laws. But don't worry it's delicious and the cookies just melt in your mouth as a fresh non overbaked cookie should be. All the pastry dogh is made in house BY HAND no machinery at all just strong arms and a rolling pin. Probably one of the only bakeries in NYC still doing it.That accounts to the deliciousness of the Napoleon cake which is a phanamanan in Williamsburg and in NYC. As with any kosher establishment Friday is rush hour so to speak being very busy with jewish families buying for shabbos even so service is nice and fast but if you want to have a leisure time go any time but Friday after 10:00 am. The Chasidishe frau/rebbetzin behind the counter was very nice when I came in, even though I'm visibly not Chasidishe, but this bakery is the real deal. Coming to the Chasidishe part of Williamsburg is like going to Europe 100 years ago. Very Ungarishe/Hungarian old world feel, and on a recent trip, I had the most delicious cherry strudel/turnover, and an apple turnover, both of which were full of fresh fruit, and the dough melted in the mouth. If I lived in the area, I'd probably make this my regular bakery. I'm sure the challahs and kichels are very good, too. I spent no more than $3 for the two pastries, which is a great metzia/bargain. read more
