I was looking in the area for a place that soil. This popped up on Yelp, so I gave it a go. Parking: Street parking. Though it's a neighborhood, it's not an overly packed one, so it was cool! Vibes: Welcome to the Linda Vista neighborhood. You're not too far away from the main plaza, but when you're here, it feels completely different. Though it's a house, it feels like you're in a nursery. They have a lot of plants, it left me pretty surprised. CUSTOMER SERVICE: Great! Friendly people who were super knowledgeable. The best customer service you can get at a nursery. They have all the rare tropical fruit plants you can look for: cherimoyas, atemoyas, Longans, wax apples, mangoes, lychees, sumo mandarins, and kumquats. They offer the fruit to taste. We got to try different type of cherimoyas. I got a wax apple tree 4 years ago and it is the sweetest wax apple I have ever eaten in my life. I tried going to another nursery in Vista (Cay Vuong Ut Ngo) and that lady was rude and doesn't give you her time of day. read more

Ong Nursery has very tropical and hard to find plants- I highly recommend this place if you are looking for a particular fruit tree. They are a family owned operation and are very knowledgeable on how to take care of each plant (ex: weather conditions best suited for the plants, how to plant into ground, which soil/fertilizer to use, etc). The owner is pretty straight to the point. The prices are pretty fair for the size of the trees- time is money also so you are paying for more mature plants that will provide you fruit sooner. My husband and I bought a kaffir lime tree but we will be back to buy more fruit trees in the future after our backyard is finalized. read more

I rarely review anything, but I couldn't help but leave a 5-star for Ong Nursery. I had been researching Passionfruit Vines for weeks and looking at all the different places to purchase them. I nearly ordered one from Home Depot when I stumbled upon Ong Nursery's site. I'm so happy I did. I purchased an extremely healthy passionfruit vine that stood 5-feet tall. I was very impressed by the selection of exotic Asian fruit and tropical trees they have here. They have common fruit trees and plants also such as lemons, blueberries, and avocados. But here you will find trees that are hard to find elsewhere such as lychee, Jack fruit, and starfruit. Their selection is extensive and they really know their plants. They are are only open on Saturday and Sunday. Their trees are a bit expensive. However, I heard about this place from my brother who bought a loquat tree here and his tree was a lot healthier and more productive than the one I got somewhere else. It could be that he has a greener thumb but I fertilized my tree and had help from a gardener. It would have been more helpful if the staff was more friendly. This nursery is truly a hidden gem for exotic fruit trees. The owner is incredibly knowledgeable about fruit trees and botany in general. His family is very friendly and a young girl helped us pick out a mango tree. They have so many varieties of mangos! So it's nice to know a bit about the different types they have so you have an idea which to buy before you go. I've included a few pictures of the different types in my review. The young girl too knew a lot about the different types of trees and fruits from her father. Not sure why people are griping about the prices? The family KNOWS their trees, products and horticulture in general, even the eldest daughter. They're so knowledgeable that it blows my mind. They're the FRIENDLIEST people you could meet, and very kind and generous. People complaining about prices must NOT know about the varieties and strains they have. They are VERY FAIRLY priced and have some strains that others in the areas will not have. There are people who come from hours away, and even states away. I met a few people who came here from out of state-WOW. Today I bought Keffir Lime, Calamansi, and a few pepper plants native to Vietnam and Peru. So, tell me where else in SD one can find these plants/trees at "normal", big box store prices? Sure, if you want standard key lime, go to Home Depot, but Ong won't carry it BECAUSE ITS NOT EXOTIC. These FINE FOLKS SPECIALIZE IN EXOTIC VARIETIES. I REPEAT, they SPECIALIZE IN EXOTIC VARIEITES; this means MOST PLACES WILL NOT HAVE THE SAME STRAINS/varieties they have. I will be coming back for Cherimoya and Thai mango; so tell me where else in SD can one buy an African variant of cherimoya and a Thai strain of mango? Go on... I'll wait. Don't believe the negative reviews of these people, the people leaving those reviews are either CHEAP or don't know the costs involved in trying to cultivate a strain of plant others don't have. This review is pretty long, so please bear with me! My husband and I moved to San Diego almost six years ago. A year later, we spent around $5,000 on many mature Asian fruit trees from Ong Nursery, one of them was a white dragon fruit tree. Since we had purchased mature trees, they all started producing flowers in the 2nd year. However, even though our dragon fruit tree got a lot of flowers, they all turned yellow and dropped - no fruit whatsoever. My husband, who has a master's degree in agriculture, tried everything he could including hand pollination but still no luck! When consulted with the owners, the wife said we just needed to water more. Well, we did but still no luck as the same thing happened the following year. Needless to say how frustrated we were! Luckily, we found an article on the internet explaining that some varieties of dragon fruit need cross pollination. We happened to have a red dragon tree (a gift from a friend and this variety is self-pollinating) that produced flowers at the same time, so my husband used its pollen to pollinate the white dragon's flowers. Voila! We started having beautiful fruits, finally! Please see pictures Before (dying flowers) & After (beautiful fruits). Fast forward to this year: unfortunately, our red tree produced flowers in early June, so by the time our white tree's flowers came out in July, we did not have any pollen from the red tree to do the cross pollination. We thought we could ask Mr. Ong to give us some pollen (or one flower would be more than enough) from his many trees because, after all, we spent a fortune at his nursery. Imagine our shock and hurt when he refused, despite repeated emails from us begging him. He did not think the tree he sold us needs cross pollination even though we sent him the pictures to prove him wrong! Thanks to him, we don't have any fruit this year to enjoy! What a selfish and heartless owner! We have pretty much the same problem with the lychee tree, but that'll be another review later. read more

Hidden gem! I found this place while looking for nurseries on yelp - this is someone's house - so don't be alarmed when the directions take you to a residential neighborhood. They only stock exotic fruit trees and have a ton of stuff I've never even heard of. Ong and his wife are some of the nicest people I've ever met. I felt like I was talking to friends giving me advice. I got to taste some fresh fruit and ended up buying a Kaffir Lime tree. The only reason they're expensive is because the trees are bigger - they don't bother selling small plants that customers have a hard time with. Highly recommend this place! read more

I wanted a citrus tree or two, and they do have a variety of nice looking trees, but so many are missing labels, and the prices are WILD. 2-3x what you'd pay for a similar size and quality tree at any other nursery or online. I had a really good interaction when I bout two trees from them. I wanted to come back to buy more but wanted to grow these two trees first. Unfortunately, one of them the chico tree died. I really wanted this tree to thrive and I followed everything that Quang Ong emailed and recommended to do. The Atemoya tree is living and thriving. I gave it a shot and called, a woman picked up and was really rude about it. Saying that she can't do any returns or can't help me. I wanted to buy another one at a discounted price but she was firm and rude about it. She said I should go to homedepot instead. So, I will not come back to this place to buy trees. I will also tell my family to go somewhere else because I had them go there to buy multiple plants and trees. What a bad experience, this just happened 5 minuttes ago. I spent close to $1, 000 for both trees, at least she could have offered more than rudeness and telling me to go to home depot when she knows well I wanted exotic trees like the Atemoya and Chico. Bad business practice and customer service. Don't waste your time and money here. I would give 0 if it was possible. More often then not, when expectations are in stark contrast with actual experience it's a high expectation followed by disappointment. Our experience here was quite the opposite! We found out about Ong Nursery while we are at another nursery looking for a Lychee tree. They had one at the other nursery and I was trying to negotiate on price as it was more than I was willing to pay. Not getting anywhere I stepped away for a little bit to look at some other trees. A guy that had heard me talking about the Lychee tree came over and whispered 'are you looking for Asian fruit trees?'. I said yes and then he said 'try Ong nursery in Kearny Mesa' all the while he was looking around to make sure nobody was listening to us. What was this all about? Some secret nursery selling Asian fruit trees? Sign me up! We got back in the car found it on Yelp and headed over. When we were getting close I realized it was in a residential neighborhood and I just knew it was probably going to be someone selling a couple of trees out of there backyard. I couldn't have been more wrong! This place turned out to be so awesome! The have a huge variety of healthy well taken care of trees. Everything is clean and the lady that was working was extremely helpful. She told us that it is a family run business. Another thing that was helpful was that they had a picture of a little girl holding the fruit of many of the trees next to trees just in case you don't know what it looks like. They took great care in wrapping up our trees and telling us how to take care of them when we got home. She also gave us a sheet of paper with instructions and told us we could call or email if we have any questions. The prices are high but this is one of those times I don't mind paying more as I see the value. It is a family run business and it is obvious they take great pride in what they do. By luck my fiancé and I drove by this Plant Shop in the midst of a neighborhood. We drove through on the way to Lowe's to buy a tree. The guy who helped us out was super friendly, informative.. he knew everything about all the different plants he had, gave us printed notes of how to care for the Cara Orange tree we got and told us we could email him if we had any questions. We received a magnetic post card with all the business information, and he gave us a delicious fruit to try from one of their other trees they sell that we never had before. We plan on buying more plants in the future and we know where we will go. I can only recommend this place! They have so many exotic fruit plants/trees. read more

Awesome collection; awesome family. I came here with my visiting mother, intending to essentially just look around and see what this local legend of a nursery was about. It did not disappoint. Even in early January, the vast majority of plants are healthy, hefty and green; quite impressive considering the density of plants at this residential address. And customer service seems to be excellent as well. Everyone in the family is extremely friendly and knowledgeable. In the end we only purchased a pandan, but definitely plan to return at some point later (hopefully when samples are available) to pick up an atemoya or two, as they seem to be the nursery specialty (along with mangoes and certain Pouterias). Do note that most plants here are at least 5 gallons as well as 3+ feet tall and priced accordingly, so Ong Nursery seems specifically catered to those who wish to obtain fruit quickly rather than save money at the expense of time by purchasing seedlings. read more

What a fun tropical fruit forest in the backyard of a residential house! Mr. Ong's daughter helped me buy a lychee tree for my nephew's new home here in San Diego. Yes, the price was a bit high, but the tree already had flower buds. She did say they were likely to fall off, but it's a good sign for future fruiting. Any tree you buy must attain sufficient diameter to support bearing any fruit. Any tree you buy that's small diameter is going to take at least 2 or more years to bear fruit. Very expensive place to buy tropical fruit trees. The owner bought the trees from Florida and nurseries around California then jack up the price by 3x to 4x and sell it to consumers. For instance, he bought fruit trees from La Verne nursery for less than $30 and sell for $130 (5 gallons, 4-6 ft fruit trees). You can find the same products ( such as La Verne nursery) sell at your local nurseries for much cheaper price. For San Diegan, I recommend to check at Evergreen nursery. What a well organized rare fruit tree nursery! The owner's family is very knowledgeable and helpful. I bought a 6' tall Africa Pride 2 Atemoya which looks super healthy and vigorous. They gave my wife and I samples of fresh fruit including Longan and seedless square guava that were delicious! I'll be back! Not cheap but better prices than some other nurseries, and the quality here is better. A friend recommended we try Ong Nursery as we were looking for something different in the way of a fruit tree. Please note that when you go there (and you absolutely should), plan on spending a few hours. It is true that the nursery is in a residential neighborhood and at a house. I almost turned around and went home, but so very glad I didn't. The sheer variety and options to choose from can be overwhelming. It is helpful to have an idea of size and planting location when looking for the new and unusual to add to your property. We ended up selecting a rare mango tree and a purple, red and yellow plumeria. Quang is the owner and willingly shares his enthusiasm and knowledge however you may need to be a little patient as it can get busy. As a caution, prices are a bit steep, but worth it. read more

They do not advertise and are only known via word of mouth. One of their customers actually created their website for them. If you are looking for rare and exotic trees this is the place to go. They have been in business for over 25 years and also have a very large farm in Fallbrook where they grow exotic fruit (like Lychee!) to sell. Important Things To Know: 1. They are only open Saturday & Sunday. 2. If you are one of those people who like the fru fru overpriced snooty nurseries this place is NOT for you. It is not your typical nursery location. It's in a local neighborhood (Linda Vista - next door to Kearny Mesa area) and at their house. It was so surprising how they had created an actual nursery in their back yard! 3. My family is really into the rare Asian fruit trees and we usually drive to LA to buy them. So when a friend recently told me about Ong Nursery in San Diego I had to check them out. Overall the prices are very reasonable compared to where we go to in LA. There were some rare trees that were a bit more expensive than what I was used to but the trees were also bigger. The owner Quang, his mother, and his workers are all very friendly and helpful (unlike the LA place we go to). They let us sample some of their fruits and also provided print outs on the proper way to plant a fruit tree. I had some questions on how to self pollinate a cherimoya tree and Quang emailed me the directions. In total, I bought three fruit trees from them and I'd definitely go back there again. The nursery is actually at a residential house but don't be fooled. The backyard is huge and there are tons of fruit trees all around the house. They have lychee, guava, cherimoya, wax apple, citrus, etc. I would check their website or call if there is a specific fruit you have in mind. They have a very large collection of tropical fruit trees. If you're looking for an exotic variety, they definitely have it. A larger collection is stored somewhere in Riverside (?) and can be brought down upon request. One of my major concern is the price. The prices are not written on the plants or containers, so you have to inquire about the prices yourself if you want to know. One day they quoted $85 for a seedling plant and a month later it was $35. Owners are very nice and helpful if you can communicate with them. After I've called them I was able to visit their nursery on weekday since I work on weekends. After greeting me they just let me go to look around in their tropical fruit nursery. I felt like a kid in the candy store. They have everything you can imagine as far as tropical fruits. Amazingly designed drip system . Hard to fathom to be able to arrange thousands of trees in such relatively small place. Neat terraces in the back on the hillside. After a while a sweet lady came out and we browse together.
