While there are rock yards that have a better selection of the boulder and larger rock variety, what you'll find here will likely suit your needs. Basically, drive in and go left and drive around to the front if you want to self load or if you want stuff that needs to be dumped into the back of your truck. Yes, you can have an employee help you load stuff in the back of your suv or truck. Yes, if you have questions about how many rocks you'll need, they can help you inside. What a great experience. I am building a reflexology walk, so I need a very small number of each stone but a wide variety of stones. This is hard to find - the stones all come in big bags of single stones. When I told them what I wanted, and they did not have a solution, they just gave me two bags and let me pick whatever I wanted. Amazing - they have a huge selection and I got great stones - and they charged me for two bags of everyday stones. There is no way this is worth their time, and no way they make money on this - they were just happy and helpful and kind. You don't see this much anymore - and it is greatly appreciated. Every time I've been in here there's some issue. Today the manager kinda freaked out on us, stopped halfway through helping us and said he didn't have time and that they were super busy. To his credit, we showed up in a truck that had a cover for the bed and dumping the rocks into the truck would've taken about 20 minutes. But if that's the case don't sell us the rocks in the first place. After ripping my receipt out of my hand (justifying it by telling me he was the manager) he offered me a refund for the 1/2 yard he didn't have time to put into the truck bed. Came to Southwest Boulder and Stone today for the first time. Was a great experience all around! Literally every member of the staff was warm and welcoming. They were also very knowledgeable and helpful. I particularly worked with Katrina and Mike and they were amazing! I wasn't even planning on picking up materials today but because they were so helpful and the products just what I needed I ended up leaving with two beautiful lava stones for a zen garden I'm building in my backyard. 12/2021 update: New team there, and between manager Mike and Tatiana at the front desk, the tone has really really changed. I have bought there twice in the last month - flagstone, rock, and mulch - it was a far better experience, and the mulch was super-clean. The only slightly "off" experience was the yard worker acting impatient and unpleasant, but that turned out to be because no one had told him what we were doing. As soon as I asked them to clear that up, all went well. I am glad that the old guard is gone. They really seemed not to care about the customers at all. Mike puts the customer first and has employees who follow suit. Bravo! read more

After being to 2 of the other major rock places around town, i ended up here. First impression, GREAT SERVICE! As soon as i get out of my car, I'm approached by a sales associate who asks what I'm looking for, what kind of project I'm doing. I say I'm redoing part of my yard and replacing it with drought tolerant landscape and i want to do sort of a Japanese Zen garden. So a few plants, and some boulders. He gives me a few suggestions on gravel and rocks. Of course the pebbles i want are super expensive, so i still couldn't decide. I decided to look at boulders, as I'm looking at each one, he's describing how the different boulders have different colors in them and how the different pebbles would highlight the different colors in the boulders. I took some of the small boulders and brought them around to the different rock piles to see how they will look together, i still couldn't decide. Came back the next day with my landscaper and decide on a crushed lava rock since it would not be an area that people would walk on. It was much more reasonable than the uniform black river pebbles that i wanted but still gave the uniform dark color i was after. Delivery starts at about $100 depending on your zip code. They set aside my order after i purchased them and my landscaper picked them up in 2 trips so I didn't have to pay the delivery fee. Over all i thought the service here was the best, they greeted me, gave me suggestions, weren't over bearing or pushy with the sales. I also liked that the boulders were sold by the cubic foot, so they estimate the size of them, rather than weigh them. I liked how my project turned out. read more

I just had the worst service by all the employees there. I needed 1 ton of Autumn Flame Select, the pick your own had 5 pieces that were obviously the runts of the group. I asked if there was any way we could get another pallet open and they said NO, those are for DELIVERY only. Once the open pallet - again 5 pieces, 2 that were definitely not select - was gone. I'm buying $800 dollars worth of material and you won't sell it to me because you want to double the cost? "Oh well we have to break down the other pallet to get you one ton." There were 3 workers looking at the DG, sorry to disturb their morning gaze. Hate to have people work. In any event, poor "company policy" and even poorer attitude by the obviously underpaid yard workers and the counter guy. Gougers. Won't ever be going back here, they lost my business and anyone else that listens. read more

I started my quest with another very well known company in San Diego and had questions about my location for delivery as access would difficult. I told them that I would like to send them pictures and they stated multiple times that that they could do the delivery without issues and nonchalantly dismissed my concerns.... Fast forward-we picked out the product, did the math, contacted them to purchase and set up a date when I again insisted that I send them pictures. After a few emails, it was determined that no-they could not deliver the gravel to me..... This was the case with others except Southwest. We were exhausted by the Home Depot DIY modality with renting their truck and going back and forth with load after load. A friend recommended Southwest and we were impressed with the quality and selection available. We were helped by the sweet, adorable, and incredibly helpful branch supervisor Illusion who matched our original sample and got us all set up for a delivery to our house. Southwest Boulder & Stone is an excellent spot to satisfy your landscaping rock needs. They seem to have a variety of everything (boulders, slate, pavers, brick, cobble, etc.), of different sizes and colors - all at very good prices. For the rock and pebble, they even sell them in 40 lb bags. So along with having the variety, their bag prices are much better than, say, Home Depot. The staff here is very helpful and friendly. For instance, I had just parked my car and got out to start browsing around. In less than 10 seconds, one of their employees, James, who was busy sweeping up some ground/garden pathway material, looked up and greeted me with a "Good morning, may I help you?" BLAM! What a great first impression of this business. I worked with Jon to pick out some Mexican beach cobble to fill up some areas in my backyard. He walked me around the premises and showed me the different cobble types that were available. He recommended the one half-to-one inch size stone to fill up the 2 areas in our backyard that were both about a foot wide. He also offered his opinion on which cobble type to select based on the color of the house and the theme that we were trying to satisfy. Delivery of the rock was scheduled a couple days after I had made the purchase. The rock was delivered ON TIME. Basically, I received stellar customer service from the beginning to the end. To get here, I would highly recommend taking the Balboa/Garnet Ave. exit going I-5 south. Afterwards, take the first left on Damon, then take a right on Sante Fe street. Southwest B&S is immediately on the right. This is definitely a much better (and safer) route than taking the tricky right onto Sante Fe from Balboa Ave. Lastly, I know of no other landscaping rock businesses in the immediate San Diego city area. Unless you don't mind heading to RCP in Santee or Lemon Grove, this is absolutely the place to go. Good products, great customer service and a "stone's" throw away. read more

SWB has a pretty good selection of decorative rock and basic building materials, no 3/8 crushed, and nothing with fines. This location is one mile from my house so they are good for small quantities of rock that I can pick up. However, for larger deliveries they are priced about 10% higher than others. I will continue to shop here for small items but for larger orders I've found RCP and Gravel & Grit more competitively priced. read more
