So they have a captive audience in many ways by way of being located well. The waitresses get high points for overcoming the inadequacies/deficiencies/lack of ambition/imagination of the management. They don't ever seem to try anything new or innovative or that harkens back to serious Jewish delis of yesteryear. Why no knishes, kishke, black and white cookies, decent kreplach and potato pancakes { theirs pretty much suck }, great challah, The list is endless and what about a wider array of sliced meats: pepper beef, pickled tongue, bologna, brisket. How about something as simple as a bowl of mish mosh soup. Chicken broth with vegetables and a matzoball, rice, egg noodles, and kreplach in a BIG bowl. How tough would that be to do? They could learn a lot from these exceptional Chicago area delis: Kaufman's in Skokie Manny's downtown Chicago 11 City Diner downtown Chicago Steingold's on the northside Schmaltz in Naperville They'd make a lot more money if they up'd their game. We get take out on occasion from here and dine in on a rare occasion due to Covid but we really like their food. I always order the locks and bagel and the salmon is very fresh. They have always been very friendly and our food here is always great. read more

Cash only restaurant. They have an ATM machine inside. I was confused when I first came here. It's not clear wich is the entrance door. They have a deli store what it seemed like. Next room to it is the small sit down restaurant. On a Sunday morning was a bit busy with only one waitress doing everything. She was very nice, efficient, and friendly. Everyone was friendly. The coffee was ok, very typical of any breakfast place watery. I ordered the cheese blintze. They were very deliciously amazing. My son had hot chocolate and a waffle with bacon. Waffle was so soft and tasty as well bacon. The bacon was very crispy. The hot chocolate needed a bit sugar. Over all we loved our breakfast. read more

I live a few blocks from the Onion Roll, so I eat here frequently. My favorite day to visit is Tuesday, as I love the split pea soup with croutons. Yummmm! I am also a fan of the egg salad sandwich, any of the deli meat sandwiches, and the matzo ball soup (it will cure even the worst cold!). One of the best things is that the Onion Roll now has added a new machine for making lattes, so I don't have to go far for my caffeine fix. With the new coffees, they have also added high end teas, and the selection is fabulous for those of us who need to get our zen on in the afternoon! The staff is efficient and super, super friendly. It makes you feel good about eating locally when you are treated in such a friendly manner. Many of the staff members have been there for YEARS! That is refreshing to see and a treat. The location is convenient at North and Woodbine, with easy parking in front and around the corner. It is a great choice if going to Wonder Works Children's Museum (down the street) or if going to any activities at nearby Mann School or Field or Lindberg Parks. If you want to feel like you were visiting a New York deli then check out this cute hidden deli/restaurant. It was by accident that we found this little gem. As you enter your greeted with very friendly and helpful employees. They told us it was recently remodeled. Then we ate. OMG I ate the bagel and I fell in love, it was so so good. The owner told us that he visited NY and learned the recipe for the bagels ( which are made in house) along with the lox and smoked salmon. I also found out its been in business for more than 25 years. The owner was so kind to send us home with a few great samples. I live in the north suburbs and I will be definitely be back for more. This was my first visit to Onion Roll, I was looking forward to a corned beef sandwich. The corned beef is seasoned well, thinly sliced, and warm. I was disappointed the rye bread they use is packaged rather than bread from a bakery, but overall a good sandwich. Why a one star rating? While I was waiting, I saw a woman take a piece of bread or bagel out of the toaster with her fingers and place it onto a plate and the waitress touched it while taking it off the counter. Not good. Another waitress was standing behind the counter near the cook slicing the corned beef eating something with her hands, chewing with her mouth open and went back to the restaurant area without washing her hands. That was the deal breaker, I can't go back. read more

The bagels are very good in taste and texture though there are not a variety of choices. I would give the bagels a 4.5 out of 5. The corned beef sandwich is a 3 at best. It was corned beef crumbs not slices and definitely not worth the $15 price. There was not a slice of corned beef on the sandwich--just crumbs. It was pretty bad. Stopped in because I was hearing about the hype of the NY bagels. Let me tell you this did not disappoint! I'm originally from NJ where the bagels are just as good as NY and these bagels are the closest I've had outside of the east coast. So excited to indulge regularly!! We got a dozen bagels to freeze at home and I personally loved the everything bagel I had when I got home. Friendly and helpful staff as well! The only downside in my opinion is it's cash only, I rarely have cash on me these days, but I can make an exception for them because the bagels were that good. read more
