So I've seen this restaurant so many times and never thought to try it out until my 9 year old grand daughter suggested it. Yes, it took my grandbaby to get me to eat here. She has good taste in foods already. I was so impressed by the various food choices. She was set on having her spam Musubi I chose a teriyaki chicken kids meal because I wasn't that hungry. I was very impressed with the quality of the food. It was very flavorful tasteful and it was a good amount of portion served. So two drinks a kids meal in the spam Musubi came up to about $22 total. Not bad at all! We chose to dine in and it was ample seating throughout the restaurant. Place is so good. UPDATED REVIEW what used to be OMG I can't wait for Ono, turned into oh no! I haven't been here in eons, and I thought tonight was the perfect occasion. I had a busy weekend, didn't feel like cooking, I was on this side of town, taking care of life stuff, and the fam Bam was off doing their own thing. The counter Customer Service was about as mediocre as the food. I wasn't greeted when I stepped up to the counter, and I just felt a little offputting. I cheerfully asked with the guy thought it might be super delicious tonight and was greeted with a shrug. OK then. When taking a quick glance at someone's plate at a table, not too far behind me, the Katsu that they were eating did not look good. So I opted for Bulgogi ribs. I used to absolutely love the mac salad, so I ordered more of the salad and less of the rice. I'd asked about the veggies, but the guy mentioned that they were closer to raw than anything and that just did not sound appealing. I realized when I went to grab my drink after I paid for my order, that the guy had not asked me if my order was to go or to dine in. So I popped over to the counter and just quickly mentioned that my order was to go any kind of growled a little bit and said that he made it to go. I kept thinking what if I had wanted to dine in?! The salad was so sadly disappointing. It definitely was not like it used to be, and I kind of picked through it in hopes of finding that flavor of yesteryear. Hawaiian food is hard to find in Sacramento. Growing up in LA, there are so many authentic places. This one isn't authentic, but it has the basics. The food is actually good even though it's a chain. I love their Mac salad, I'm pretty picky with Mac salad bc not all taste the same or are even good. But Ono's has a great one. The chicken teriyaki is always good, beef kalbi is great too. My kids enjoy it as well. They sell my favorite Hawaiian sun drinks, and their salad dressing is amazing! This is definitely one of our spots to eat when we don't feel like making food at home. To make it worse, my "large" drink wasn't even filled all the way it was about a quarter empty. For the price, I expected way better quality, portion sizes, and attention to detail. I'm giving these 5 stars particularly for the HULA PIES because I havent seen anybody mention them. Idk if this is a year round thing but when we came today they had these Guava flavored hula pies that were delicious. I wish I took a picture before we at them because these plump hand pies looked and tasted homemade. They don't have as much filling as it seems but the amount inside is more than enough to go with the thick frosting on top. The crust is the star here though as they are perfectly flaky and crunchy. When in the mood for Hawaiian BBQ in my neck of the woods, I rotate between this Ono (Del Paso) and Tasty Hawaiian (Northgate). To each their own, but I would say portions at Tasty are bigger and slightly cheaper, and Tasty also does have items such as the loco moco, curry katsu and malasadas if that's what your tastebuds seek. This Ono is located right next to Chipotle in the same complex as Sprouts, Handel's, Lazi Cow, Pizza Guys, Jersey Mike's, etc. Opened in 2019 and is still a solid spot. My go-to is usually the spam musubi, and either the Chicken Combo (BBQ and Katsu) or the Chicken and Beef (BBQ Chicken and BBQ Beef), maybe throw in a Hawaiian Sun can as well. The short ribs are also a good choice. The Shrimp and Island White Fish combo is also a valid option during Lent if you observe/practice that. The macaroni salad is the best; you can even sub in a scoop of mac instead of a scoop of rice. Lots of seating for dine-in, with the surf/beach vibe decor. Fill up your to-go cups of teriyaki or katsu sauces (self-serve), located near the soda fountain. They also had a deal for Halloween, where if you came in costume, you could get a $5 Hawaiian BBQ Chicken Aloha Plate only on 10/31! Outside of extremely long wait for food. First time was 45 minutes, second time was 20 minutes (probablu they had to catch the food first) I ordered the Kalua pig and they gave me some tasteless boiled pig chopped up and all fat. We brought it back and said this is not what we ordered and this was all fat. The girl took my plate, came back and said this is kalua pig. We replied with why is it not shredded and it's all fat. So they took all the fat off (half the portion) and then chopped it more. Oh and the other plate we ordered was a katsu bbq combo. It came with 3.5 pieces of katsu. I come here because it's my comfort food and it reminds me of home. I ordered the kalua pig and katsu chicken combo plate and it took forever for it to even get out, then the kalua was cut in chunks and looked boiled, like they didn't even shred it which is like the whole point of kalua pig and the only reason I wanted to come. When I told them it's normally shredded and pointed to their picture they just took the chunks, chopped it up, and put it back in the plate. Still not shredded. No one said sorry or gave me any other options to fix what they did wrong. Didn't even end up eating the pork :| just the chicken. Honestly just upset because I liked coming here. This location is huge! There's plenty of seating inside. They had the perfect gal taking orders - she had the brightest smile and most welcoming attitude. I ordered the bbq & katsu mixed plate with the spam Musubi as my side. The meal was more than enough for my husband and I to share. The katsu was nice and crispy and the meat was still moist - my favorite item of the three. The bbq chicken was good too and the beef could've used a little more seasoning. My husband's spam Musubi were kind of poorly constructed. It didn't stay together after the first bite and there was much more seaweed than anything else. The rice to spam ratio was off too. Ordered 2 extra scoops of mac. I wish they gave more katsu sauce cause 1 wasn't enough. The container is so small lol. Ngl, I miss the one in the Bay cause they just opened, not a lot of people go there and they give huge portions! Great location near Sacramento airport in the Sprouts parking lot. Easy access off of i5. It shares the parking lot with Spouts. Lots of off street parking. Easy to get in and out of since it's right on the corner with a 4 way stoplight. Cashier was very friendly and repeated my order back to me to verify what I had ordered. I ordered to go BBQ beef with and extra side of macaroni salad. The vegetables were cooked perfectly and the bbq beef had lots of good flavors. Serving sizes were huge, 2 scoops of rice and a large scoop of macaroni salad came with the BbQ beef. The extra side of macaroni salad consisted of 2 scoops. I have found a new casual restaurant that I might become addicted to! Ono Hawaiian BBQ has everything you need for a healthy and also naughty quick meal. It is not "fast food" per se, but more "kinda fast - casual". Chicken, pork, sandwiches, salads, ice tea, and even fresh coconuts for a super treat, real deal, coconut water drink. They also have a ton of sides like macaroni salad, rice and wontons. I ordered a combo plate with a teriyaki glaze type of Hawaiian chicken, green salad with an amazing soy/sesame dressing, and a pile of rice. Also a side of the crab wontons, which were hot out of the fryer and honestly, not greasy. Everything was fresh and delicious! I actually had two meals out of the combo as there was so much meat, and had it the next day cold. The restaurant was clean, bright and fun. Huge wooden tables and cool light fixture. The service was 5 star all the way, as the staff was knowledgeable and really friendly, I even got a "hello" and a smile when I walked it. Surprised this place has an overall 3 star rating. Looking at the reviews seems like some folks ran into a couple of mishaps which is unfortunate. But from my personal experience they have all been positive and had no issues. I've come to this location a couple times now and my food order has always been made correctly. Nothing missing. Nothing odd found in my food. With that said, I have previously ordered the bbq chicken, the white fish, pork Katsu, kalua pork and the short ribs. All taste great. I typically get all Mac with my order because I usually have rice at home :) Service is always quick. Staff are friendly. Prices are reasonable for what you get. read more

Unfortunately, other pandemic has weighed on this business and they've managed to screw up every last one of my 9 orders when ordering through door dash and still forgot to glaze my barbecue chicken with barbecue or teriyaki sauce the 2 times I decided to go in person. My GF couldn't finish her meal this time. Now, it's been my favorite food since the first time I tasted it 15 years ago and this is the first time I have had bad experiences like this which I understand is due to the pandemic, but that doesn't mean I'm going to pay full price for subpar food and be happy about it. 3 stars because they are kind, but kindness is only part of the service. The Spam Musubi was delicious with the spam cooked just the way I like it, with a slight crispness! Tasty! The Kalbi Short Ribs had 3 huge cuts of Korean style short ribs. If you haven't had a taste of these ribs they are marinated in a sweet and salty marinade and grilled until caramelized and deeply brown. Onolicious! But the one I really enjoyed was their macaroni salad. Imho, their Hawaiian Macaroni Salad is the real deal. A no-frills, creamy mac salad! I say it is the perfect side dish for any BBQ or Luau! I can eat scoops and scoops of it! I prefer it to L&L's version of their Mac salad. I had a flashback to my Hawaii days when we would have these during church potlucks. It is one of my biggest guilty pleasures! This is a counter-service fast food joint, much like L&L Hawaiian BBQ, but more spacious. They took 45-1 hour to get it to us so if you're in a hurry, dont expect fast service.
