This place has been on my list since we moved here three years ago. Inspired my hula sisters, my cousin and I went there for a late lunch. We found out that the kitchen is technically closed from 2-5pm, but they could still serve some limited options. The food is pretty good. Ono Kine Grindz is such an amazing place. I first discovered it in 2010 when it was brand new when a food app suggested Hawaiian food in the area. I was like, "Wait, there's local food in Tosa?" And I was surprised and delighted to find there was! Being from Maui, I didn't expect to see local food in Tosa (where I had been exiled for 5 years at that point for my studies). I would return several times with friends or whenever I felt the need for a plate lunch between 2010-2013 when I left WI and moved back west (part of the time back on Maui). I rekindled my love of Ono Kine Grindz in early 2023 after I started working in the Milwaukee metro again. David and Guy, the owners, were the same, awesome people still yet. Friendly to everyone who walks in the door. They are great examples of the Aloha spirit and make people a part of their Ono Kine Grindz ohana. The food is amazing still yet, and I haven't had anything bad. Of course, I have my favorites, but I do on Maui as well. Their mac salad is great, and I also get the seaweed salad because, so ono (delicious)! The Kalua pig is amazing, and pro tip, it keeps well for leftovers. If they have ono available, I usually get that since it's one of my favorite fish. Basically, you can't go wrong. And to top it all off, these guys went above and beyond with the Lahaina donating part of their proceeds for a significant amount of time to help the people of Maui who were affected -- many of whom are my friends. First of all the 3 people in our group all arrived at different times they couldn't have been more accommodating for us. The menu is incredible so we took our time making our selections making sure everyone got something different. We all chose the Bento plates and they were just the right amount of food for each of us. The drinks that they offered were sooo delicious. And our server (who we found out was the owner) made sure that our glasses were always full. The service was delightful! We were encouraged to stay and chat as long as we wanted. Date of visit: August 31, 2023 We were down the street for lunch and the desserts there just weren't doing it for me, so we popped into this little joint on our way back to the car. It was the passion fruit cake that initially caught my eye, but I knew that it would likely not be my cup of tea, as they say. My tastes range closer to the Chocolate dobash cake, which I ended up getting along with a couple of mini cupcakes. The dobash was surprisingly good. I expected it to be overly sweet--even though staff told me it wasn't--but it was fantastic, and I shared the piece with my husband. Even more surprising was that he also liked it! I should have purchased a lottery ticket to mark the occcasion. The two cupcakes were also quite good. Overall service was really great. Everyone was very friendly. Inside the restaurant itself, it's not very accessible for those with a disability. We wanted to sit and eat but the tables were in an upstairs area. My son is in a wheelchair and we're unable to carry that up. We could barely push him inside the entrance. We opted for take out instead. I was born and raised in Hawai'i, so when I moved to WI, I was excited to hear that there was local Hawai'i food out here. I don't tend to have high expectations for Hawai'i food in the mainland as it's obviously not going to be the same as back home but I always have an open mind. Not sure if it was an off day but the food was not great here. I was really craving Hawaiian food so I wanted to get the laulau plate but they were out of laulau. I got the Kalbi plate instead and the meat tasted spoiled. It had an off taste. Not 100% sure what is used for the marinade but it was very salty and tasted like it was just dipped in shoyu then put straight on the grill. Only one side of the kalbi was charred but the other side was barely seared. The mac salad only tasted like mayo. Kimchi was good! My husband got the Local Breakfast. Nowhere on the menu does it state that furikake is added to the plates. My husband is allergic to seaweed so he was unable to eat his food since furikake was sprinkled everywhere. Wish we had known before ordering and we could've requested to omit it. Since we did take out, we only saw the furikake once we were already home. Portuguese sausages were really dry (I've never had a dry one before). Tasted like it was sitting out for a while. Or, it could be the brand of sausages used. We're only 10mins away from this place so it definitely wasn't from the drive home. I do want to give this place another chance! I had such a pleasant experience from the moment I walked into the restaurant. The front where you order for takeout is a tight spot but the employees were super helpful and welcoming. I chose to get the beef bulgogi bento box which came with purple sticky rice and a side- I got the potato salad. I also tried the spam masubi and chantilly cake. I believe the owner heard me asking about the guava cake and gave my mom and I a sample as he was cutting it which sealed the deal that we had to buy a slice of that too. The food was super flavorful and I loved the lettuce wrap. The spam masubi was good but I felt the rice to spam ratio could've improved. That was my first time having that so I'm not sure what the norm is. I loved the opportunity to try Hawaiian canned juices and food that I haven't had before. Okay yall, there's a reason this place is number one on Yelp's Top 50 Places to eat in Milwaukee list. Are you kiddinggg me with these flavorful Hawaiian dishes!? It was my first visit here, despite wanting to go for sometime now. Clearly I don't make enough trips into the Tosa area, but I was glad that I did. To my surprise, this place is smaller than I envisioned, but it's very quaint. There are only a few tables to dine-in, but that's because the other half of this eatery is essentially a grocery store. They provide copious amounts of Hawaiian items, from baked goods, fine fruit teas, and deli items, to special Kona coffees, nuts, sauces, and dressings. Plus, they've got Aloha shirts and dresses! I'm kicking myself that I didn't buy a jar of kimchi on my way out because it's SO good. I'll be back for that. I came in planning to order two dishes to-go. After being greeted by a friendly face, I asked her recommendations from the menu. She clearly nailed it because the Bulgogi Beef and the combo plate we're both incredible. Bulgogi beef is served with large lettuce wraps and two sides. I chose carrot, pineapple slaw and the kohlrabi slaw; both were very refreshing! The purple sticky rice that came with the dish was also great. As for the combo platter, oh my gosh. My husband and I basically fought over that. Kalua pork and char sui chicken were the stars of the show here. I don't know if they're using some special Hawaiian seasoning/sauces or what, but whatever it is, it's working. I read all the great reviews and decided to drive 90 minutes to try Hawaiian food. My last visit to Hawaii was April 2021 and there aren't any Hawaiian food in Madison. Showed up at 7:15 pm and didn't expect this is a cozy small restaurant. There were a few people standing outside for their to-go orders. There were another table of 3 dining. They may keep their air condition off or high as it was kinda warm inside the restaurant. Lots of snacks/seasoning/drinks/food available in the 'grocery' section. Initially, I wanted to get the short ribs but was concerned they may be chewy if not cooked properly. The young staff said they were actually chewy, so I got the bulgogi instead with pineapple slaw and mac salad. She informed me at around 7:30 pm that they were out of purple rice but could add another side where I pick gailan 芥蘭, my favorite Chinese vegetable. I've been eating gailan my entire life and it's a must with dim sim. First impression of the dish was ok as I saw lots of gravy with the bulgogi. I actually like the slaw but didn't find any pineapples. Mac salad wasn't that creamy. The bulgogi was extremely salty and I wish they can tone down the salt level by 50%. Taste was ok. However, the gailan as it was stated on the menu appeared to be yuchoy 油菜. Perhaps due to material shortages, they substituted a different veggie but it is always a good practice to inform patrons. Another couple sat across from us and had the combo dish with kimchee, slaw and mac salad as their sides. We chatted for a bit and all left at the same time. Such a hidden gem- this Hawaiian dinning and convenience store is very cozy and serves delicious wholesome food. We got the Ahi poke appetite was scrumptious and juicy. My friend told me about this hole in the wall. Every time I've been here, the food has been absolutely on point! Parking isn't always great, but it's worth the walk. They do have some indoor seating which I've done before, but we decided to take our food across the street to enjoy with a beer at the brewery this time. (They let you bring in food because they allow dogs!) Everything on the menu is FIRE. Wonderful meats, flavorful rice, interesting sides (I particularly like the carrot and pineapple slaw and the macaroni potato salad). Every time I'm in town I make sure to visit this place. The butterfish is delectable, the pork is tender and smoky, and the carrot/pineapple slaw has a refreshing sweetness. This is a wonderful "hole in the wall" spot for really tasty Hawaiian inspired dishes. The owner is super friendly and the cook would come out periodically to ask how the food was. The atmosphere and space is very intimate, with only a few tables on the top level hidden behind the counter and Hawaiian shirt racks. In addition to their market of island foods, they carry unique mercantile and gift items, cookbooks, authentic art and music, Kona coffees and festive Aloha shirts. We started with a sampler of Pork Pot Stickers, Sliced Grilled Portuguese Sausage and Shrimp "hash" (dumplings) - all delicious and filling. Also you must try the chili sauce that comes with, it's not spicy but it is amazing and adds a lot when combined with the apps. We've been going to Ono Kine Grindz for many years now; however due to COVID, it's been a year since we've last visited. The service is above excellent as always. All the staffs are super kind and friendly. We have never experienced anything bad during our visits at Ono Kine. Their food is always delicious and made fresh. Today, we ordered their specials (Mahi Mahi - flown in from Hawaii and crispy pork belly) The Mahi Mahi was super fresh. You can definitely taste the freshness and the work they put into it. It was cooked to perfection - not over cooked as Mahi Mahi can easily be overcooked at times. The crispy pork belly was cooked excellent! You can definitely taste the spice and the meat was seasoned well as if it has been well marinated. They also topped of the crispy pork belly with extra pork rinds, which tasted like it was made in-house. Perfectly cooked and FRESH pork rinds are hard to come by. Growing up in an Asian household, my mother used to cook pork rinds and Ono Kine really took me back home to my childhood days with this extra dish. (Thank you for your authenticity) I highly recommend Ono Kine to anyone who is willing to try out new food from different culture. The freshness of each dish will definitely make you want to go back.
