Ok, so, I kinda loved my experience at Lucky Ginger from beginning to end. Myself and my dining companion dropped by without reservations and were able to get a spot at the bar. That said, I'd likely get reservations were I to stop by again. They're a bustling little spot and saw several groups who weren't able to get a table without reservations while we were there. Where we sat at the bar, we were able to see the kitchen and our food (and others) begin prepared which was fun to see (and also nice from a transparency standpoint). Let me tell you--they are hustling in that kitchen! I began with a berry smash whiskey cocktail which was refreshing and fantastic. For my dinner, I got the bbq salmon which came with a salad to start and rice and asparagus on the side. Everything was fresh and flavorful. The only small note I had was I would have loved more asparagus but honestly, I could probably ask for a side of that next time to amp up the veggies. Absolutely awful service. We came in at around 5:30pm, and the place barely had anyone there. We said we didn't have a reservation, so they said we had to sit at the bar. So, we did. But luckily my husband quickly checked well before we were served and saw there were reservations available online, so he booked us one on the spot. We were then given two excuses, one by the bartender and a different one by the host as to why they couldn't honor the reservation: (1) there were no tables available for us (note the place was half empty, but we supposed maybe there were lots of reservations coming later--nope, the place was still half full by the time we left); (2) we had to make the reservations 30-40 minutes in advance and we didn't do that so even though we did have a reservation, they couldn't honor it because we made it too soon to the reservation time (WOW--complete BS). We were peeved but decided we should just enjoy our dinner. BUT as we were finishing up, about 5 couples came in WITHOUT a reservation and both the host and the bartender gave each couple the option to either sit at the bar or at a table. When I confronted the bartender about it, she claimed "they weren't supposed to do that." WHAT?! She literally just offered a couple a table without a reservation. What do you mean?! It was insulting. Anyway, we will absolutely NEVER come back here. The tip we left was solely for the kitchen staff who were hard at work and doing an honest job. Very reliably a good spot for a quick meal! Great bang for your buck, especially on the rice bowls - the flavours are always there and they allow you to alter the heat on everything. Only downside is sometimes it can get a bit oily or curries can get watery but you can always talk to the friendly staff to have them remake it or fix it. We had a large party for dinner on a weekday night and the place was not that full, so it felt like it was only us. The place looks a little old school with video games and the black decor, nothing great. Service was quick and attentive. Food-wise, while the edamame was great (hard to mess that up, ya know), the crispy squid, while crispy, had a different sort of breading to it unlike most Asian places and the oil it was fried in, felt old. I ordered the pad Thai for dinner and it arrived a little reddish-pink in color, unsure where the color came from. It was tasty though and the shrimp I added to it, were juicy and fresh. They brought out sriracha and hoisin sauce to add to the pho, along with all the fixings like sprouts, jalapenos, and basil. The soup was light yet still filling and comforting. The broth was flavorful, but I really enjoyed customizing the pho to my taste with the extra toppings. We visited on a Monday afternoon when it wasn't busy. Came here to try the Pho! It was some of our personal favorite. What makes this Pho so delicious is the broth, it's very rich in flavor, savory with a hint of sweetness. We also tried the Chicken satay (comes with 4 skewers, not 2) which was very nicely seasoned, peanut sauce could use a bit more peanut flavor, but overall quite tasty. I'm visiting from NYC and the pad Thai here was better than any local delivery spot I've tried at home. I did a level 3 of spice, which was the perfect amount. The portions are HUGE and enough to feed 2-3 people sharing. I also started off with the calamari which had really nice seasoning. When our server finally came around, she said, "its an old building and its cold outside". Okayy...yeah its like that in Milwaukee 4 months a year. Advice - bring a jacket and plan on wearing it. Came here last night and ordered the Tom Yum soup and the Red Curry with vegetables, which I've had in the past and gave 5 stars. The soup was delicious as usual, but the Red Curry left a lot to be desired. I love curry and appreciate all the variances at different places, but this was almost white in appearance and tasted like warm coconut milk with some red pepper flakes. So many valid reasons why this could be: a busy weekend, possibly short staffed, had to make a new batch quickly on the fly, or all of the above. But I am too anxious to speak up and assert if I don't like something, so I just paid for the whole meal and left even though the curry was untouched. I am sure there are many other things on the menu that would have been excellent. I came here earlier this month with some friends after we stopped by the state fair. Since everyone was at the state fair, it was easy to find street parking. We came for dinner. We were able to quickly grab a table and menus were placed in front of us. We then decided to order some apps and our entrees. We went with the chicken wing and beef sticks. The chicken wing was more crispy/burnt than we expected but we still enjoyed the taste. Then we ordered two phos and one pad Thai. Our server forgot to put in the pad Thai but she made up for it later. The phos were pretty standard so I'm glad it tasted like what pho is suppose to taste like. Went to dinner on a whim on a Thursday night with my husband and a friend, and it was great! There is a bar right when you walk in, so the seating situation for dinner in was a little confusing at first. They definitely do a big takeout business, there were alot of orders lined up on the counter for pickup. We found our way to the dining area in the back, and our server was very kind and welcoming. Unfortunately they were out of 3 beverages those on our group wanted to order; the Thai iced tea, a rose wine and ingredients for a seasonal cocktail, so that was a little surprising! We found other good options. Food was really good, our table got egg rolls, dumplings, calamari, 2 noodle dishes and chicken pho. Dumplings are clearly homemade, and absolutely worth the 25 min wait mentioned on the menu!! The egg rolls were hot and crispy, but average flavor I'd say. Calamari was cooked well and had a really good seasoning on it. The chicken pho was everything you want a big bowl of pho to be, and was perfect for me once doctored up with all the fixings; fresh jalapeno, spro uts, hoisin and lime. One of the two noodle dishes was a bit too salty, the other was perfect. Dining room ambiance leaves a bit to be desired, but the waitress was so friendly, helpful and caring to assure we enjoyed our meal. As many places are, I think they are struggling with staffing issues, but the food and service did not show it! I'm not knocking any stars off for it being delivered since sometimes that can ruin dishes, but this wasn't the case. The egg rolls were still crispy when they got to me and were pretty decent. I saw a lot of hype on the dumplings but wasn't too impressed with them. For entrees, I ordered the basil fried rice and the pad thai. First, the fried rice was pretty good. I asked for no spice since spicy rice doesn't sound right. There was spice in the rice (lots of rhyming here lol). Although I asked for no spice and my rice was above medium spice, it still tasted fine. I would ensure there isn't spice next time so I can taste the rice. Now, the pad Thai. I was contemplating writing what I had to say about it, but from other reviews I saw, it looks like others felt the same. I'll make this short and sweet. It was the worst pad Thai I've ever had in my life. There was no flavor whatsoever, and it was very dry. The beef was almost nonexistent in the container; if it was there, it was dry, too. I don't like my pad Thai super saucy but this had no sauce anywhere in the dish. I've had my fair share of pad Thai, and this is one I would avoid. My go to for many years here is the special pho. They used to have one of the best pho broth in town but it doesn't taste the same anymore. A good broth should be boiled 12-24 hours, rich & thick in flavor. The menu states "rare** beef slices and brisket" yet what was delivered were extremely fatty pieces. Typically a good broth is worthy of sipping without having to add sauces, I found myself adding hoisin and Sriracha to give it more flavor. I like the pad thai or drunken noodles, but we have ordered many things on the menu, and they have been great. They also have a decent selection of beers that you can't find at other spots. That is a cool twist as well. The servers are always prompt and attentive. We haven't had any sort of issue with service when we've been in. The location itself has a cool vibe to it. Ordered takeout for my birthday meal and this was the first Thai restaurant we found that was open on a Monday evening. Can't comment on the service or atmosphere since we ate at home, but we'll definitely be going back to check those things out because our Massaman Curry and Red Curry with Tofu were really, really good. This was the second-best tasting Red Curry I've had in Milwaukee, hence the four-star rating. The tofu was fried, which gave it a nice texture. I wish it had more vegetables in it, but there were a few red peppers, green peppers and bamboo shoots. It definitely could have used way more veggies. The rice was cooked perfectly and we both enjoyed our dishes immensely. This dish was recommended to me by my fellow vegans and they were right on the money. Solid Asian fusion in the Third Ward. Staff was friendly and the food was really tasty. Probably the best pad kee mao (drunken noodles) dish I've eaten in the Milwaukee area. I went for "level two" on the spice meter to play it safe, however I didn't find it to be that spicy, so if you like a kick I'd suggest you go up to level 3. The salmon was cooked just right, and the house hoisin BBQ sauce made it oh so good. There are plenty of dining options in the Third Ward, but you can't go wrong if you end up here! read more

This is one of my favorite restaurants of all time. I live in Minnesota now and almost every time we go back to visit Milwaukee, I try to go to this restaurant. I would easily give this five stars if there was better customer service. The food is top notch, however, pretty consistently the waitresses are just alright. They do their job but don't go above and beyond in ways I've had other waiters that enhance your visit. Has never deterred me from wanted to go! Haven't had a bad experience. I remembered enjoying eating here so I came back at long last. I stopped for a late weekday lunch when there weren't a lot of customers and got a spot at the bar. I had a cup of tom yum with veggies and the drunken noodles with tofu. You can pay extra for protein in the soup but I liked it with just veggies. The sour and lightly sweet clear broth is what it's really about anyway. It was refreshing with the crisp vegetables. I ordered my noodles at spice level 4 (out of 5) and they had a nice sinus-clearing kick without the spice overwhelming the dish. They had a nice aromatic flavor from the basil and there was plenty of contrast between the thick noodles, stir-fried vegetables, scrambled eggs, and the tofu. Terrible food. We ordered Door Dash. Super watery chicken curry. Tom Kha Gai was completely separated into two layers-watery broth and milky. Disgusting - we didn't even taste it. Chicken satay is not chicken satay. It's some kind of curry chicken dry rub. The peanut dipping sauce is super watery. Pad Thai with tofu - noodles were OK but tofu was leathery and tasteless.
