So, I REALLY wanted to like this place and went back and forth on whether or not I should give a negative review. I am new to the area and needed to find my new nail place. I specifically chose Onyx for three reasons: 1- Positive Yelp reviews 2- Instagram worthy client photos 3- Late appointment hours I work during the week in San Mateo, as well as, on the weekends so my availability is very limited to say the least. I was so excited to see that I could get a fill at 7pm and booked my appointment through Yelp roughly a week ahead of time (requesting a specific technician). Day of I called to confirm and they asked if I could come in at 6:30pm which I was able to make as traffic was minimal. When I arrived, I was immediately greeted and the overall spa and nail area was very clean. I was offered water and my service began immediately. I was happy I didn't have to wait or get a different technician than requested. It took roughly an hour to complete my fill and this is where my experience became cringeworthy. She asked how I wanted my nails and I showed her a picture, she said okay but had a strange look on her face (I assumed she just didn't like the color). Not once was I told the design was too complicated or there wasn't enough time. I picked out my color in polish and as I went to wash my hands I heard the other technician mention on the sly something along the lines of "what about/are you going to do gel". I come back and gel is out (gut told me upsell but I went along with the mindset of they are the professionals). I sit down and then these negative space stickers are placed on my nails, painted over with gel and then cured. When pulled off, they made the gel leave these rough lines and there we spots where the gel went under the sticker as it wasn't laid evenly. It was back and forth with this, then free-handing then "I should have just used polish, the gel is making the lines bleed". Really? I requested polish, you switched to gel. It is now 8:15/8:30 and her next client/family comes in and I begin to feel awkward that I've been there so long. Once the gel polish was fully on she sent me to the other technician for topcoat (I'm falling asleep at this point as I have been up since 5am) and says "wait, are you okay with these?". This is where I messed up. I should have said " No I am not". But I didn't, I was uncomfortable that I was there so late, and there was already a person behind me. I was exhausted and just could not fathom staying there for another 10 minutes let alone an hour for more polish. Instead, I do a half-assed glance and say sure as I'm only thinking about getting home. I left at 8:40pm and when I got home and REALLY looked at them did I realize what a train wreck they were. The length was not even, acrylic was higher in some parts and lower in others, lumps of acrylic under my nails and the gel polish/design was just... just awful. I called my sister and begged her to try, do anything, and fix them (she is not a nail technician but owns a "gelish kit"). She was able to come by at 9pm last night to file them down, even out the length and put a legit coat of gel on them until I can get them "fixed". I was beside myself thinking I'd have to go into my work with those nails. Now, I know I should have said I was not happy at the time, and tried to get in at a later date (which is part of the reason why I was conflicted on giving a negative review). But, this technician knew on nail #1 it wasn't going to work out and proceeded to continue. I'm not sure if she was tired, didn't think I would become a regular client or what. Honestly I should've left this review a year ago when I went here. I booked a combo facial/massage deal and it was the worst experience I've ever had- the owner decided to provide these services to me herself and it was pure garbage. Supposed to be an hour long massage and she barely massaged me for 20 mins ( I timed it) because she kept leaving the room for some reason and it was a terrible massage at that. Next was the facial and the warm cloths she was using smelt disgusting like dirty and moldy. She also kept frequently leaving to go eat something because every time she came back the smell of onions became stronger and stronger - like you're really touching my face after eating? The products they used sucked and also smelt terrible. I think about how this place seriously ripped me off all the time. Online the deal was $165 but this lady had the nerve to charge me over $240 because of the length of time it took for the facial and massage. Hello! This review is not for the massage I booked because when I arrived at the "spa," everything was locked and closed so no massage was ever received. I made my appointment online through Vagaro and received a confirmation email and text. Later in the afternoon, I received another text confirming yet again that I had an appointment at 6:30 p.m. for a massage. I came earlier than my appointment time to make sure whatever paperwork I might need to fill out could be done and not waste anyone's time. I walked around to the two entrances but doors were locked. So I tried calling. The first number that popped up for the spa ended up being for a nail tech. She let me know that people go home early on Mondays, cool but then why leave options available online for later times? She gave me the number to the "main desk." I called and was told the same thing, that all the providers went home early. Great. This was told to me unapologetically and frankly seemed like she thought I should know that people leave early on Mondays. Right. So no text, email, or phone call letting me know that I no longer had an appointment. For a spa, I do expect a little more customer service or even at some sort of semblance of an apology on the phone. I'm just disappointed because I was expecting to feel better after coming here but left the parking lot more tense then when I drove in. Upon arrival a woman (her name starts with a C and she is one of the owners) greeted us and had us pay first before receiving any services- she ended up being the same one to apply the scrub on me( this was so shady as she had on everyday clothes, I have no clue if she washed her hands (considering we went from the lobby straight to the spa room), she didn't seem professional at all. My spouse paid for a massage and body scrub and the woman only applied the scrub on me for about 12 to 15 minutes. The spa music used was from her personal cellphone on YouTube that she sat openly on the counter(very unprofessional). After about 15 minutes the woman told me I had to stay laying there for 30 minutes- then completed the service by having me shower. One of the towels offered had some dry red spots on it, I was freaked out. This portion of the spa service was over $100 and was a horror. Alex the nail lady did a good job but unfortunately my nails were not long enough for a manicure so I asked for a refund. The manager woman lied stating she would do it while I had my pedicure done. She never did and it took over a week of my spouse and I driving to the spa to track them down for the refund. When we finally got them to hold themselves accountable the woman threw the money at my spouse and I in front of our 3 year old son. It was disheartening yet confirmed that despite our efforts to work with this company they simply have no class . We are a couple of color and to receive such treatment was traumatizing and disheartening. I highly recommend you DO NOT WASTE your time here especially with Cass. read more

So happy I found this place. I've been wanting to find something closer to home. I spoke to the owner over the phone and she was able to accommodate me for a manicure and a pedicure. When I arrived my manicurist was Alexandria she is amazing and was so detailed in everything she did. I told her about how over time I felt that my nails were getting very brittle with the gel. She informed me that it could be they way the last place was removing the gel, she told me about hard gel which is like acrylic but a more natural approach it's a very thin layer that goes over your natural nail and looks amazing. If I could leave a negative star I would. As I was getting out of my car and heading in I was informed that my appointment had been canceled and asked me to come back later. It's every unprofessional from their part not only by canceling my appointment, they took a walk in in my spot and let me drive all the way here, make arrangements for childcare and not once call me or send me any form of notification to let me know that my appointment had been canceled. I am a regular client and i have recommended many, unfortunately other people that i had recommended had informed me of such occurrences and i did not believe them since i hadn't experienced it myself. This place is a joke. I sent my two assistants here, one for a facial and one for a massage. They asked my assistant who was getting a facial if she had sensitive skin and she simply told them she didn't know. They gave her an extra facial without even letting her know it was an additional $15. When I got the bill it was $228, mind you, on the phone I confirmed with the receptionist that both services would be $165. They billed the tip to my credit card even though I told the receptionist that I did not want that done because my assistants left a $40 tip. They gave me a story about how they would have noticed it in their books at the end of he month that they received too much money. Like they would really send money back to someone if I didn't see the overcharge on my credit card statement. They then went to tell me that they would be sending money orders for the difference. I gave them my full info and let them know that it was my work address. 4 days later and still no mail containing the refund. I sent a text to whoever sent a photo of the money order and they went on to say that they addressed the letter to "Owner" because I told them it was my work. How does my work address go to me being the owner? What person doesn't address a letter with a name? This is a shady business. Do not go here. read more

I am currently sitting outside of this salon. On Wednesday, I used their online service as per their answering machine directions to book a pedicure for Sunday at 9:15 am. My appt confirmation email said to arrive 15 minutes early. So I arrived at 9am. It is now 9:30 and I am still sitting here as the place is still not even open. Online, it says regular hours in Sunday begin at 9am, so even if there was an issue with my appt, I don't know why the store would not at least be open. I was hoping to wait it out because I have a gift certificate for here and would like to use it, but I'll just have to go somewhere else. My daughter needed a pedicure and full set, I just needed a pedicure. The pedicure lady (who I've recently found out is the owners wife) did my daughters pedicure first. When they finished, this woman proceeded to tell me "we're done and I won't be taking you." What, why? "Because I'm choosing not to." I asked if my daughter had done something wrong and she said "no, I'm not charging you, I'm just choosing to not take you." I put my color back and walked towards the door which she was holding open. Asked again if my 12 year old daughter had done anything wrong and she replied "no But y'all can finish texting each other or whatever." I proceeded to try and explain I had been sitting on the couch minding my own business texting work related and got in the car and left. This was the most weird, confusing, and demoralizing experience I have ever had. Ok, so this is my first review due to the fact that an establishment has never compelled me to create one until now.. I've been a delivery driver for 8 years now and my back is starting to feel the affects of that. As a avid massage receiver, I'm currently a member at a "big chain" massage place close by and I wanted to try somewhere different. So I went to Onyx Day Spa for Valentines's Day to treat myself and I can undoubtedly say that I'm lucky enough to have found a HIDDEN GEM in Castro Valley! Her name is YUKI, and I highly recommend getting a massage from her! She's the lead massage therapist there and after my recent visit I clearly understood why. Her skill was top notch. She was able to address a number of my aches and pains seamlessly and effortlessly. She is extremely knowledgeable in her craft and every second of my 90 minute session was pure bliss. Also she's very easy to talk to, down to earth, and genuinely seemed to care about my needs. She was so good that I'm going to cancel my membership at the "big chain" and come here exclusively! I visited this spa 2 times. The first time I called to make an appointment for a facial, and was told on the phone I would do an hour long facial where they would "address my skin concerns". Anyways, they told me it would be ONE hour and should cost me around $90. I go in for my facial, not sure who was doing it for me but she seems like the owner? She does my facial, literally nothing on my face improved even about 2-3 weeks out. She then tells me it's $135. I ask why? She says because it was 1.5 hours. She added that, without my permission. I let it slide. I go back for another "acne facial" yesterday with Wendy. I was excited about this because I am battling acne scars. Wendy was very sweet and nice but I'm not sure she knows 100% what she is doing. She starts to "extract" my acne. Mind you I had barely any active acne. She started taking out my "black heads" which were actually my moles. She continued to push after I said it hurt knowing it was NOT a blackhead. I left my facial with MORE scars on my face then I came in with. Which is really upsetting considering I just told her I have my wedding coming up and wanted to clear my face up. Anyway, don't come here for a facial. I see no improvements on my face and it seems like they just sweet talk you to pay more. Will not be returning. read more

I should preface this review with Sara was a DELIGHT and did a great job. My negative review is about everything else. When I arrived I couldn't tell where i was supposed to check in. Finally a person helped me, I sat in this little entry way -- but you can hear all the noise from the nail salon and the hair salon. Then personnel kept coming in and out of the door. My massage started late because "they couldn't get the previous woman" out of the room???? During my massage I could hear the nail woman laughing, then someone started running the vacuum outside the door of my room, then people started talking outside the door. This was the least relaxing massage based on level of noise. But again SARA did a WONDERFUL job -- if Sara worked somewhere else I would definitely go to her again. read more

I booked an appointment online, got a confirmation email and 2 texts. I made my way over from Oakland and arrived to find the spa was closed. The signs and website indicated they were open. I tried the phone number listed and it was disconnected. Update: a minute or two after I posted this I got a call from an owner to say the masseuse was on her way. They did not staff a receptionist on some days and the service providers lock the door if they are alone. 5 minutes before my appt the masseuse showed up. She unlocked the door and it seemed like we were the only people there. My massage was overall fine. As they say you do not get a second chance to make a first impression and Onyx left a poor first impression. Things felt pretty disorganized. There were no signs or indications they were open, the spa was dark even as I was checking out. The bathroom was out of toilet paper, clearly the closer from the previous evening didn't restock it. Overall I understand why they may not staff a receptionist. But if that's the case instead of having posted hours, saying "by appt only" sets proper expectations. I was also disappointed that my service provider showed up minutes before my appt. Honestly I was about it leave and go somewhere else when I arrived 15 minutes before start and the place was closed despite arriving during posted business hours. This left the massage feeling rushed and the overall experience was poor. read more
