Cute little restaurant that tries to be casual yet fancy. Just came here because we felt like it was a steak night and while the food itself did not disappoint, the price may freak out some. This is definitely more on your highest level pricing for steak out there. The service was amazing though. Everything was prompt, good recommendations, and super friendly. Truly some of the best steaks I've had in a long time where they use their own custom seasoning which has a bit of a sweetness to it. Don't skip on the steak sauce either! read more

The service was good - but simply not good enough for the prices they are charging. Portion sizes are entirely too small. They claim each side serves 2-3 people, yea right, more like you need 2-3 sides per meal. I ordered a 10 oz filet mignon, and there's no way it was more than 6oz. Prices do not in any way justify the service or food we received. We went for our friend's 30th birthday, and we should've went literally anywhere else and paid half the price and got twice as much food. read more

The atmosphere was traditionally "steakhouse", low lighting, candled booths. Our waiter was very attentive and explained the parameters of the balanced menu "ala carte" (very confusing and rather passe'). The caesar salad ( shared) was very good, crisp and "garlicy". However the my 10 0z. filet was crusty chard and the fashionable dinner knives dull. Rip and tear was in order. The potatoe fries were a change and quite filling. My partners veggie entre' was well presented and I'm told, not over cooked and but properly crisp. Her potatoe side was not to her liking with a smokie paprika garnish, which the server obliginly replaced with a béarnaise sauce. The only problem was the wait for the béarnaise interrupted the rhythm of the dinner. Our server was very attentive and cordial, traits rarely seen in today's market and well worth the tip. Overall we felt the dinner was too pricie for the product presentation, not the fault of the server, but the calibre and shortcoming's of kitchen staff. Nice wine pairing and we love wine. Recommend both the desserts on offer and one dessert has bacon. But we liked the hot, cookie cream combo, the best. Went down to Whiterock beach Saturday nite walked into 8 restaurants .. all were full and only taking reservations, couldn't get a table at any of them. Went up the hill to the Onyx Steakhouse walked in only 2 tables had customers... should have figured out why but we just wanted to have a nice dinner out ..... Really Disappointed!! $80 for a bone in rib eye that was 1/2 fat and gristle $70 for a fillet mignon, (meat entrees included nothing but a slab meat with out any side condiments - $16 for 2 small peppercorn sauces (the $1.49 peppercorn sauce mix package from the grocery store tastes way better and you get 4 times as much. Add in a 1 Cesar salad, 1 tuna carpaccio, 1 bland market vegetable side, 1 mash potatoes side, 1 Montecristo coffee (best part of whole meal) 1 bottle of overpriced Corcelettes wine AND BINGO ..... $333 later .... 2 very dissatisfied diners. read more

There is ample parking and located right on Johnson street right before the sharp left where it becomes Pacific Ave. We tried the 40 day dry petite Fillet Mignon with grilled polenta, onion rings and lobster mac and cheese. Beef was cooked well, nice beef flavors from the again, onion rings were super crispy and the Mac was good. Had large chunks of actual lobster which was nice. The other appetizer we ordered was the tuna carpaccio, it was underwhelming with hard avocado and paper thin tuna slices. This was the second time that we have been disappointed! It was Mother's Day. There was a sign out on the street for Happy Hour YET there was no happy hour. On the menu, there was Prime Rib dinner for 19.95, yet there was NO Prime Rib dinner for 19.95. The owner was working that night and was surly and NON welcoming. Our friends walked us to door, and I said to the Hostess, 'we are early for our reservation but we are going to have a happy hour drink with these two first.' The owner chirped, 'there is No Happy Hour'. I then said, 'well you should remove the sign from out front then!' He stormed off. So did our friends. I don't get how ppl can treat customers like this and expect them to return! Our server was very nice though and the 32 dollar prime rib was mediocre at best. I have been wanting to try this place for awhile and I finally got a chance to try it when our other plans fell through. Ambience is good. We got a large booth that could fit 6 of us so that was fantastic. We got our menus and we ordered drinks and appies. Red and white sangria were both good; not too sweet which is what i prefer. Calamari was good. Honestly, nothing to rave about but they weren't bad either. Batter was light and crispy and portion size was good. Onion rings had spice to them which I liked. It had little bit of kick to it but my friend found it little bit too spicy. So it would come down to personal preference on how much of spice you can handle. Now on the entrees... and this is where we run into problem. I had the tuna which was nicely seasoned but the prawns were quite bland. My friend who got the sirloin said the steak was too bland and the mashed potato too cold. Other friend who got the curry bowl did not like her dish either. Now she is someone who can handle spice and she got the curry because it said it had peppers however, she also found the dish to be quite bland and not very flavourful. Other friend who got the salmon also complained of the same thing... not enough flavour on her salmon. I sense a common thread here and it comes down to flavour which was non existent. I think it would be a good place to come for dinner but when the food isn't good, that kinda ruins the experience. And for that price we pay, we expect more. Ended up here for our first experience after not being able to get parking at their pearl restaurant which we have been to many a times before and is excellent. We thought we could not go wrong with this as a second choice off the strip. Boy were we wrong ! We're to start. Well how about selling a $24 of Rodney Strong for $100, once brought to the floor managers/ our waitress attention she said thanks and would look into it. We then order a bottle of prisoner which was fairly priced. Ask for raw oysters and they were sold out. This happens obviously but a small disappointment as this was one of the reasons we were going to pearl. Next up was ordering our mains. I took a quick at the menu new exactly what I was going to order. 24 oz Bone in Ribeye Chicago style and blue cheese on top !! Hmm favorite. Hang on what all out of them on a Saturday night at 6:30 pm ! Ok we were offered another explanation due to there supplier screwing up and it was plausible but still evening ruining for sure. In the end I just ordered a hot chicken Cesar (come back to this in a moment ) and the others ordered pasta and tuna all of which were excellent. Sides of Brussels, mushrooms & Gnocchi were equally as excellent. Now that Hot chicken Cesar well as we waited for our mains and I had saw my salad sitting on the counter for about 10-15 minutes until the other mains were ready. So the hot chicken was cool/warm at best. I just could not bring myself to complain again so I ate one small piece of chicken majority of lettuce which was very good and in the end decided to mentioned it to our waitress. Anyhow to end this long winded review the out come was salad was deducted from bill (I guess so ) and I still tipped reasonably as our service was very good and upon checking our bill that $ 100 bottle of Rodney Strong was still on it !! Now we had another bottle of Fuse and the prisoner that we had would of been close but $ 100.... I just couldn't bring myself around to dealing with another issue. Friendly service. They managed to accommodate us even if they had reservations scheduled for the next hour (or so they said). The aforementioned reserved cancelled mysteriously, so we were permitted to stay a bit longer. We each had an Italian pinot grigio which was pretty good. To share: Lobster mac and cheese-lobster did not taste fresh, but I'm not sure what I was expecting. Mac and cheese was okay but really, how difficult is that? Steak salad-steak was tender but kept to a bare minimum portion wise. The rest of the salad was pretty tasty. I s'pose it was meant to accommodate the $16 price tag, but that seemed a bit hefty, overall. Fried onion rings on top was an added touch. Blue cheese dressing was nice, but a tad too thick. At least they divided it up for us. Maybe I'm just spoiled by the city and the addition of b and b. The service definitely pumped up the place, and it was quite busy with the suburban crowd. But what we had seemed quite small and came at a hefty price. As busy as it was, it just didn't match up to anything in Vancouver. I guess what the folks out here don't know can't hurt them, but I wouldn't be in a rush to come back here soon, either. read more

Very bad experience with our second visit. Our first visit seemed okay in Feb. Service is really bad. Asked three times to get a glass of water, three times to get the bread, although a bit over-baked. The food was bad too. The prime rib was too fatty, and the 12oz stirloin steak was much less than 12oz and overcooked. They are discriminating Groupon customers. They told us that the Sunday special is prime rib with some pudding. So, we ordered the prime rib, but we didn't get the pudding. We asked why, they first said, "oh, we had given that to you, blah, blah," Then, told us, "oh, no, you can't get the Sunday special, as you are Groupon customer". They asked us if we are groupon customer in the beginning, and they should have told us that the Sunday special is not for us, but they didn't. It's approaching the expiration date of the groupon. I don't know why they have such a discrimination towards Groupon customer. I will never ever visit this restaurant myself again. Hey, restaurant owner, if you are unable to keep your service and food the same quality to groupon customers as the normal customers, why would you promote your restaurant in Groupon? Went for dinner at Onyx the other night. I had never tried it before but was excited to. There aren't a lot of independent non-chain steakhouses in South Surrey or White Rock. We walked in at 7pm to a very quiet, almost museum like atmosphere. Our hostess sat us at a table under a bright light next to a lady that was reading a newspaper. I asked the hostess if we could be moved to a booth as i felt like speaking in anything more than a whisper would bother the lady beside us. She said they were saving the booths for parties of 4... even though we were sitting at a 4 person table. Finally she agreed to move us. It took them about 10 minutes to "set up a table" yet there were at least 6 empty booths all set already. Once we were sat at the new table we had been there about 15 minutes but we still had not been given menus. Once we got to our booth we had a waitress who was pretty good. She made suggestions on what to order. She told my sister that the ribs which she was ordering were better with the blueberry infused bbq sauce than the herb rub. She took her advice but when the ribs came out it was literally as if they had blueberry jam rubbed on them. It seemed like they had been pre-cooked and then just warmed, but not put on the grill. they were covered in globs of fat. yummy! I had the prime rib - it was excellent. I have to admit. cooked perfectly. Highlite of the meal. All in all, i would not go back. I'll make the trip downtown or settle for a steak from Keg or Cactus. My wife and I went on a Monday night. It was quiet but the service was "relaxed". We both ordered the hanger steak, with yam fries and grilled veg to share. The food was good, although the steak was more on the rare side than medium rare as advertised. For desert, the strangest apple gallette I've ever had. Looked like half a tennis ball covered in pastry: the apple was far too green/undercooked. The ice cream was good though. Really liked the wine: Church & State merlot. The atmosphere has a downtown feel and comes without the need to drive into town (and suffer the usual parking and traffic hassles). This is really a 3.5 star review. If it was downtown it would be a 3, but it's in White Rock so it's a 3.5 bumped up to a four. I did have a Groupon for Onyx, which got me in their door for the very first time, but that hasn't really factored into my review (although it was nice to have it). It seems they have got a lot of biz with the Groupon - ALTHOUGH, I have friends who bought it and it would have been nice to have been able to go and sit with them, but I digress. The GOOD - Great atmosphere. It's a small resto,but the layout is maximized. - Solid service all around. Welcoming and attentive. - Pricing for the most part is reasonable. - I had the 16oz bone-in rib steak and it was very well cooked and a solid piece of meat - an A. There was also a 7oz. sirloin at the table which seemed to be all good too, if not seemingly so small on a huge plate, but it seemed to do that job. - The Gorgonzola Mac and Cheese was a B+ - good, portion a little light. The sauteed veggies a B, well done, but portion very light. - The Creme Brule trio was an A+. Pretty awesome stuff. The NOT so Good - On a cold rainy night the door opens and closes frequently, brining in a cold draft to seats that are on one side of the resto on the entrance side. It didn't *really* bother me, but it was noticeable and would bother the cold sensitive. - Sides are obviously advertised as generous and enough to share for two people. The portion size is barely at that level. If you compare it to Gotham or the now defunct Morton's (downtown) I would say that the portion size is 1/2 - 2/3 of what it is at those places. - No Creamed Spinach? Booo! - Not a place if you have a group more than 6 - which is maybe why they restricted the Groupon to tables of 2 only. - I admit this is unfair. The Cheesebread here is just fine, but I compare all Cheesebreads to the Hy's Cheesebread. The portion was four skinny strips. Cheese was good, but bread was too crunchy for me, and generally nothing special. ----- Overall, it might be unfair to compare it to a downtown steakhouse. But that seems to be the only comparison for me as it's my assumption that they want to be one of those high end steak places. I have another Groupon so I'll be back. But generally we love going out with groups of friends, and I'm sure I'll be back after that - but it's not a homerun here. Solid, but improvements can be made. I really enjoyed the food here. I don't normally eat steak but this was a great meal. I got the Filet Mignon which was cooked a perfect medium rare. The servers and ambience made for a fantastic experience. In general I love appies and I have to recommend the Tempura Bacon and Pomme Frites. I went with a group of 7 buddies and everyone enjoyed their meal. We used the private room upstairs, I believe it's called the Meat Room - it was nice quiet space with a private bar. Wife and I joined some friends last week and went to Onyx for dinner. Place was packed out and had a decent vibe. Menu was interesting with unique variety along with some good staples. I was, however, immediately struck by the pricing(high), but the place was busy and recommended by our friends. Serving staff was good but not as professional as one should expect in that price category. We were considering steak but the prices were too high for us. I love Yorkshire pudding so both the Mrs. and I ordered the Stuffed Yorkshire. At $17.75 we were both very disappointed to receive a large plate with a medium/small sized YP sitting in the centre lightly filled with a little bit of dry meat(guessing a few ounces only), small amount of mashed potatoes and their horse radish sauce liberally zig zagged all across the plate for nice presentation. Nothing else came with it. Way to much horseradish on the plate which overpowered the entire "meal". It was very dry as there was hardly any demi glaze. YP needs gravy by nature. We both just looked at each other when it was delivered.... seriously for $17.75. The creme brule trio was good and helped smooth emotions after feeling extorted for a small "bun stuffed a bit of meat and potato" Bottom line $74 for 2x Stuffed YP, martini, $5 beer and one dessert. Clearly a case of a restaurant thinking they can charge high prices because they think they are worth it. Also, note the online menu and the PDF menu on their website have different prices. I think the actual menu we received had the old prices as well. The stuffed YP was $15.75 but the website and my receipt shows $17.75?? That's not cool. read more

Better dressed people were getting better service, hoping for a bigger tip?? The construction worker was forgotten lol. I had the rib steak with blue cheese butter and the char was forgotten on my part. Crab legs were bland. Beer was good... it always is. The bill was close to 90.00 for myself. Gave the gal 20.00 for all her effort and letting her know blue collar workers do tip better. Hopefully they get more staff and look after me better if I come back the next time. read more

We got to the table and it took a further 30 min before they took our drink order. We ordered Caesar salad which was shared but was under par. Sides were disappointing but the steaks were good though. We asked the waitress where was the creme fresh in the mushrooms she went to check and never came back. She was new but The service was sub par. She spent more time with the table next door who wore jeans baseball caps and running shoes. My husband ordered 6 oysters as an appetizer, and a rib steak @ $47.95. for the steak alone. 3 other steaks were ordered at the table. two sirloins, which looked very unremarkable., and the rib and a striploin @ $43.95. The oysters never did arrive, even after the waitress requested the chef to make the order quickly, to no avail. We ordered several sides to share amongst the table, with the waitress describing the cheese covered fries so that they sounded absolutely delicious. Well, when they came it looked like someone had run out of the drizzle when it came to our fries. We had some fries recently at a hamburger diner that looked just like these.!! I had the seafood linquine., which was nothing special at all. We were originally going to go the Keg, however decided to try the Onyx, but likely will not be back.. We had a gift card so we went for dinner. The one thing I would warn everyone is that gift cards or coupons are only good for their regular menu items. For us, we actually wanted to take advantage of their Sunday prime rib specials but unfortunately could not - probably would have saved us $20-30 so just note that some pre-planning on what you might get is useful. The gift card did give us a 20% discount. So now to the food ... we started with the tempura bacon. 4 strips with a yogurt dip. I would have liked the bacon to be thicker cause you could not really taste it. At $12 for this appy, I would pass on ordering it. My main was the seared tuna. It was very good.
