A friend took me here--what a wonderful surprise!!! We two Bellinghamsters fell in love the place!!! Their Smuggler's Tunnel truly is like a speakeasy. You'd never really pay a lot of attention to the building, coming up on it from the street (I couldn't believe it when she turned into the parking lot, thinking she must have had some errand to do first). She had to lead me inside along the speakeasy passage to the tunnel, it was so dark. I thought it was styled very fun and cute when my eyes recovered and adjusted. I wasn't super hungry so I only had the fried breaded pickles and the house battered prawns--both were great, but those prawns were something else. They were some of the best things I've ever put in my mouth--ever! Perfectly cooked, huge and moist and so flavorful. Their cocktail menu is great with lots of choices--we loved our drinks. We also loved Athena, our bartender and server, who had wonderful suggestions for us and was just wonderful in so very many ways. I so want to go back! read more

Definitely come early (they open at 4:00) to get seated right away, especially if it's New Year's Eve, apparently! We were just in town for the day and hungry after tromping around the beaches all day. Is it always really busy? Hopefully- it's delicious. We took a walk down to the pier and back while we waited for it to open and beat all the crowds. We both had the fish and chips, which came with fries and coleslaw. I've never seen fries cut like this- as if potato jojos/wedges and twirly fries had a brain child?? Tasty though! The fish was crispy on the outside and I loved that it came with lemon AND there was malt vinegar on the table (and it came with tartar sauce too!) Perfect triple combo in my opinion and I didn't even need to ask. Coleslaw was great- not too much mayo or celery seed or anything weird. Just a good scoop of salad. I ordered scoop sauce on the side and it wasn't my favorite because I am the weirdo that doesn't like ketchup. If you like ketchup (and a touch of horseradish!) this is your sauce! My oldest son enjoyed his poutine and the little one enjoyed his kids meal burger and I loved that it was only $9. Stopped in on a whim for dinner. Wow, they had so many options as we had some picky eaters with us. This place was great. We wanted some beer and ciders, before selecting they gave us mini glasses to try them. I had the One Tree Lemon Basil cider and it was delicious! Our server was so kind, she talked about the ciders with me and she even suggested the lemon basil one. I ordered the chicken and bacon ceasar wrap w/ fries. The others got the mushroom, Swiss burger; chicken schnitzel; and the chicken breast bowl. All of the food was absolutely delicious. Of course we had dessert, they had 3 to choose from. We got the brownie with ice cream it was the perfect size as we didn't have much room left for dessert but wanted to try it. Everything from the atmosphere, service and food was great. We had the Thursday night hamburger and fries special last night. Tasty and a bargain price. We added the especially good prawns and the potsticker appetizers. It was a busy evening, as Thursdays always are, and the bartender was funny, personable and efficient, unlike the nasty guy that I had last summer who was obviously unable to handle the stress of the job. I recommend the Gateway has one of the fine places to eat in Blaine, but beware if the nasty bartender is still employed there. read more

We happened to see the sandwich board outside the place advertising their Thursday special. $10 burger. That seemed like a good deal to try the food here. So we decided to stop here for dinner. The promo was from 4 pm to 8 pm Thursday for the basic burger which came with American cheese and fries. It was also loaded with lettuce. You could add on other stuff which I didn't realize till later when the server brought us someone else's order which had onions and bacon. That sounded yummy. The basic burger was still good. Can't go wrong with it. The fries was also good. I liked the portion as it was not a lot but that meant I could actually finish it. For a special, it is not needed to purchase a drink. That is quite a big deal as I do not really drink beer and most places do a beer and burger special. They have many types of beer on tap. And there are signs which boast their fish and chips are the best in Blaine. You do see many tables ordered that. They also have specials for seniors on fish and chips Monday to Thursday. C and I came here for dinner on a Thursday night. They have a $10 burger special that comes with fries every Thursday between 4 and 8 pm. There are plenty of free parking at the back and a few parking spots on the side of the restaurant. We each got the $10 burger special. The burger was very basic but all the ingredients were very fresh. It came with a slice of cheese, tomatoes, lettuce and a dab of sauce. There were a few bits of pieces of cartilage in my beef patty. Service was not too bad. When we arrived at 5 pm, the restaurant was very packed. Most people ordered the $10 special burger or the fish and chips. They claim that their fish and chips are the best in town. The ambiance and decor is nice here. It features the uniqueness of USA highways signage, gas stations and a mix of the beer that they serves by having he keg spouts on the wall (no you can't pour yourself beer from the wall). They have a lot of beer options. At first I thought they make their in house beer and apparently that is not the case. No they don't do off sales. We did have to wait for a while for the food to come but no complains on that because we were not in a hurry anyways. Plus I was not that hungry to begin with. I really enjoyed the meal. I think we will be back some time in the future but just don't know when. read more

Fish and chips! Burgers! Two of my faves in one place, Gateway 1890 you won my heart (and stomach). In my never ending quest for fresh seafood I decided to try this place as they advertised hand cut and breaded cod. I was not disappointed. The fish tasted and looked very fresh, the batter was crisp and light, fried to a golden brown, and accompanied with housemade tartar sauce. Excellent. Let's not forget about the fries. They call them Sidewinders and they are like thick curly fries. I loved them. The portions are large, so bring your appetite. We also tried the Artichoke Dip with tortilla chips. The dip was fantastic but the chips were stale. I think a toasty bruschetta would have been a better vehicle to shovel in that luscious dip. The 1890 burger was great. With 1/2 lb. of grilled beef and a generous slab of melty american cheese, you can't go wrong. Our beverages were good too and reasonable enough. My partner was impressed with his Long Island Tea, saying that they certainly didn't skimp on the booze. I had a seasonal special Peach thingy (I don't remember the name), it was very refreshing. You guys get 5 stars in the food department. We ate inside, it was a bit too cool to sit outside but they do have a nice dining area out there. The inside dining area is a bit overcrowded and noisy but this isn't fine dining so enjoy your meal and watch the game (I forgot to mention we sat in the taproom and there are two large screens with sports on for our entertainment). The place looked fairly clean and the staff was pleasant. Service was fast and courteous (although I would suggest that skintight leggings while fine for the gym, are not that appropriate for work, unless your shirt comes down over your rear end, and make sure they don't have holes in them...) Loved the food, liked the service and the ambience...we'll be back. read more

The lower level of Gateway 1890 is eerily ark... w a fireplace burning along the back wall... that's because you've entered... Smuggler's Tunnel... Speakeasy. Unfortunately for us we stumbled across here after a day of brewery hopping. I exclaimed aloud to our server "oh no, we've been brewery hopping I can't tackle this Old Fashioned flight!!" to my major disappointment! We had the place to ourselves except one gal at the bar... who I suspect was a co-worker. We just drank water and I ordered he Grilled Cheesy Burger and my mom had a senior menu burger. I didn't inquire why and wouldn't think it'd make much of a difference but putting the burger on the inside out bun was.... genius... it was delicious!! Paired w two slices of cheese... MMMMM The other half was even still delicious for breakfast n the morning! The sidewinder fires.....also mmmmmm!!! I really wish we would have stopped before our day of brewery'ing and been able to take in some of the cocktails!! This is a fun little find w the 80's-ish blue fabric booths and the scatterings of prohibition-esque decorations and all the framed prohibition photos. There was also an outdoor bar that we had to pass through from our car to the entrance. It was empty as it was cold & rainy. Even though does not compare to the burgers they regularly serve. They have a lot of rotating beer there with some hard cider too. Enough variety you should find what you like. We stopped in for lunch Saturday, May 4th around 2.30pm and though the place wasn't full, there were a lot of people enjoying their meals and beverages. It was lively but not too loud, and the staff were really friendly and welcoming. We order a burger and fries, and the fish and chips. Everything tasted fresh and well made. There were quite a bit of fries with the orders, and they were too good not to take home. From the outside it looks like an older building, which has its charm, but inside with the clean, modern design, you get the best of both worlds. And the views of the railroad track, the border and the water looking north to Canada made the place all the more interesting to be in. read more

The portion was by the looks about 1/3 of what it was before and when I broke open one of the over cooked pieces it was practically hollow (see picture). Came here for Friday dinner around 5:30pm with wife and son. Greeting and seating were fine. Good beer selection, but they post the draft choices on tvs that if you aren't facing, you have to crane your neck to see and wait to see them as they rotate through. Paper list would be nice. Ordered drinks and fried cauliflower appetizer. Wife's old fashioned was an overly sweet disappointment and fried cauliflower was obviously frozen from a bag tossed in sauce of our choice. We were not given plates, forks or even napkins, so I had to walk over to server station and fetch myself after waiting a bit. We all ordered burgers for dinner and another beer for me. Beer showed up promptly. Burgers took quite an while to appear and were mediocre, nothing special. Server who delivered our burgers. asked if we wanted more to drink and we all asked for water. Never showed up. We finished up and waited for our check...a long time. Server showed up finally, apologized and promptly got the bill and took payment. Overall, I probably won't be back for quite a while. This was our second time in and the first was a bit better, but not much. The check was just under $100 before tip and for our money, there are much better choices. I left a 15% tip, commensurate with the level of service given. read more

Brand new establishment that just opened up Saturday the 11th. Much needed to have another nice place for "downtown" Blaine. I thoroughly enjoyed this place, interesting menu with multiple sizes of "plates" rather aluminum trays. I actually enjoyed my first ever order of fried pickles, I've never had that and was a little leery but they were tasty and I will order them in future! I enjoyed the rather unusual selection of cheeseburger salad but again it was very good. They offer quite a variety of beers on tap with an interesting dispensing system consisting of glasses filled from the bottom and the contents held in place with a magnet that depicts their logo and become "collectibles". The ambiance was nice and the bar area with large screen tv looks good. The wait staff was friendly and attentive. I hope that in the summertime they will have outside seating. The only item that needs Improvement is the "silverware" rather flatware that is very thin, and is out of place. Please please upgrade to better cutlery.. What an awesome tap house! The bartenders were friendly and knowledgeable about their many beers. It's October fest and the bratwurst mashed potatoes and sauerkraut were pretty good. The best part is their bottom up beer pours. They have glasses with magnetic bottoms and the beers is poured from the bottom up! Coolest thing we've ever seen! Okay, so I didn't lie. We came back! This time around, I had the pulled pork sandwich and my partner had the Plover fish sandwich. Both were off the charts! Their fries are crispy, twisted and seasoned well. The pulled pork is amazing and the Plover sandwich is incredible! Did not disapppint!!! Our server, Cassidy, is one of the best servers we have had in a restaurant in a very, very long time! She was personable, funny, and oh so helpful!
