    The pretty menu

I had been here before but hadn't been back in like 7 or 8 years. I honestly completely forgot this place even existed and I'm not sure why I had never returned. Came with my family after church and now I'm like wow! We've been missing out. We ordered the New York steak with chicken and it was so good. Everything had flavor and was cooked right it was so good. Service was solid from the start. The hostess was super pleasant, greeted us right away and got us seated pretty fast. Our server was attentive and quick with our orders. The chef did a great job interacting with us and the show. Overall just a really good experience. Good food, good service, easy vibe. Definitely putting this back on our regular spots.

Over the years I have periodically dropped in, but after the pandemic I seemingly forgot about Ooka. In that hiatus many places I used to like went downhill (R91 and Oishi), are good but not easy to get to (Sushi OK), or much too far Riverside. Today I ran into unexpected tire trouble and needed to kill a couple hours for America's Tire to do their thing, so I sat at the bar for a light lunch. The two chefs were really nice and did excellent work, and we hada good time chatting. The 7-piece Sushi meal comes with a Tuna roll and miso, as well as a salad. I also ordered their menu augmented One-night stand roll. I figured that'd be enough and it was. Service is excellent and immediate here. It's changed a little since the last visit, and I enjoyed seeing the fish on display in the chef station. The Bluefin is deep red and the salmon nice and fatty, which is a sign of good selection. The salad and soup came quickly, and both chef's worked on the other items, which arrived quickly. The presentation is really good here. Fresh and delicious. One by one I sampled the sushi, and Halibut really stood out. As did the house ponzu sauce. The salmon and albacore were especially tasty, too. The roll was perfectly assembled with clean separation inside, and the seared salmon on top with pesto sauce was superb. All-in-all, it really won me over and I think I'll be back much sooner than later.

Had a wonderful dinner after long day of meetings. Sashimi sampler set was perfect for one person and very fresh. Miso soup and hand roll were delicious as well. Service was good and quick. They have hibachi section too. The ambiance is nice and cozy.

We went to ooka Japanese restaurant for a birthday dinner. It was my first time having hibachi where they cook in front of you. I will say at first i felt a little awkward as the hibachi area its small and a bit crammed. You have to sit with others and it was a little awkward at first because we got a corner seat that was not very spacious to eat at. Luckily the party next to us left and we were able to scoot over. The service was great and our chef was really funny and nice. The food was good as well but some was oversalted liked the fried rice and some lacked flavor like the tempura shrimp. Overall it was a fun experience but i would only return with a large party and don't see myself going by myself or for a date. It's definitely more of a group activity vibe.

Excellent service. Our waitress was friendly and kind. She made great suggestions on the different dishes and appetizers they had. The food was very tasteful and high quality. I will definitely come back to try other things on the menu.

    $17.50 chicken fried rice

I use to love Ooka's but was very disappointed when I went today. I ordered a side of chicken fried rice with my meal and was informed that the chicken fried rice was $12.50 + 5 (regular fried rice charge). So my total would be $17.50 for this small side of rice. Honestly whoever came up with the price should be ashamed of themselves that's a complete rip off !! So then I told them to take the rice back because that price was ridiculous and that I would just take the white plain rice with my meal and the server told me that he "technically" should be charging me for the white rice, which had me so confused because on the menu the meal comes with white rice and to upgrade to fried rice is a $5 upgrade. There's no consistency with the prices here. Also the waiter had initially told me that for $17.50 you get a bigger serving of chicken fried rice ! He said it would be like 3 servings , and as you can see from the picture it was the smallest bowl/ serving ever. I will never come back here im going to stick to Benihana .

It has been a while since we have been here but we were glad to have finally been able to come back! I really like this place for the various dining experiences it offers. They have a sit-down dining, sushi bar, or a hibachi dinner for you to choose from! Each option is great, but we chose to sit at the sushi bar this time. The sushi chefs are so friendly, love talking to people, and, of course, have great suggestions if you don't know where to start. You are still served by a server (who brings things like drinks or food from the main kitchen), but each time we've been there, it seems like the sushi chefs are more our servers than anything (and they have a cash tip-jar if you'd like to leave them a tip). The vibes overall were just really great and it was a perfect date night with some amazing food and drinks. The sushi was really really good and flavorful, and so were the drinks! The wine was sweet and was honestly some of the best wine I've had. I would definitely recommend trying this place out if you haven't, it is definitely a favorite for us and we will certainly try to go back more often!

Music was playing at a good level. Menu features lots of options. Some of us were craving sushi and the other half had bowls (beef bulgogi, spicy pork bowl, orange chicken). Our meals were served around the same time and waiters regularly checked on our refills and if we needed anything. At one point, music turned loud and lights flashed, to celebrate someone's bday so something to be aware of that they do. Overall, our dining experience was satisfying. I was a big fan of the salmon carpaccio and the super sexy bowl. The fish tasted fresh and portions are large so you get your moneys worth. My companion did mention that their bulgogi had more onion than meat which was visibly notable. Definitely aim to visit again and will recommend this spot to others.

We went on a Saturday at 6pm without joining the waitlist as yelp said we didn't need to. Our experience vs recent yelp reviews was overall pretty damn positive. The only thing that is true that every other review mentions is yes they add auto gratuity so when you get your check the option is there to still add a tip which if you don't pay attention can lead to you giving a 25%+ tip without realizing it. The service we had was fast, I still don't know who our server was because about 6 different people kept asking us if we needed anything. Our tablet worked fine and we were able to order everything from it without having it malfunctioning or not working as some others have stated. One odd thing to mention is the soda cup is about 2x as big as the water cup. The sushi itself tasted good, however my girlfriend and I try to get our moneys worth so we normally only pick nigiri and the standard apps, and avoid any kind of rolls. Our take is on the carpaccio, seared salmon, tuna, and escolar, and fresh water eel. All the nigiri we had weren't "fishy" or tasted not fresh or whatever some of the other reviews mentioned but again we didn't have any of the items other people have complained about. So if you're looking for an AYCE sushi place and are tryna get your moneys worth I'd say it's a good place to go.

Well, that all came to an end today when we decided to visit our old friend and she acted like she didn't even know us. We purchased 3 of our favorite rolls off our list but none of them tasted the same, they were bland at best and the best was no better than 'just okay'. Even one of our favorites, the Tokyo roll, was a big disappointment. I'd like to say that I was surprised, but I really wasn't. I started to see the writing on the wall last year but like a relationship that is past its prime, you get comfy and hope against hope that things will change but you know you're just fooling yourself. This evening, I chose to take a moment and look around remembering better times and memories made, I felt like Norm from Cheers on their final day. So, as I took my final lap I dabbed the "allergies" from my eyes, left my doggy bag on the table, turned and walked away. We're going to miss you, Big Oak. It was good while it lasted.

It also raises concerns about basic food safety practices, including whether proper hair restraints were being used by whoever prepared the meal. He quietly brought it to the staff's attention, and they simply took the plate away. No apology. No follow-up. To make matters worse, we were still charged for the contaminated roll.
