SAME RESTAURANT AS TAIYO'S SUSHI & POKI We were heading back from Joshua Tree to OC and got immense cravings for something soupy. It was either eat in Riverside or wait one more hour and have a late night dinner. We decided to eat in Riverside despite knowing their limited soup options so we wouldn't have to eat too late. We got to the spot around 8:30ish but we couldn't find a place that was labelled Shabu Garden so we circled around for a couple of minutes before realizing that Taiyo's Sushi & Poki was what we were looking for. Not sure why they have different names, but it looks like they're under new ownership so I guess they haven't had the chance to change their name? On Sunday evenings, they close at 9:30pm, so I honestly wasn't sure they were going to accept us. Luckily for us, they still accepted our walk-in and we were seated promptly. They have 3 AYCE options: AYCE shabu, AYCE sushi, AYCE sushi & shabu, and they also have a premium option of AYCE sashimi. The prices seemed quite reasonable for sushi and hot pot at $41.99 but considering the time that we had until the last call (9PM), we just opted for the shabu and ordered as many meats as we could. The servers were extremely attentive knowing that we didn't have much time until the last call so they brought out a total of 3 rounds of meat. The owner or the manager (couldn't tell) graciously offered to freshly fry any shrimp tempura that we wanted, and we were so grateful for that. Just note that there are only 3 types of broth to choose from: original, spicy, miso They have a buffet section for the veggies, noodles, and seafood. The selection is decent. They had my usual favorites like spinach, mushrooms, napa cabbage, clams, and they even had crab. The hot foods section consisted of fried foods such as fried calamari, fried shrimp tempura, etc. I can't say too much about the buffet section since we arrived there late, but we basically cleaned up majority of it. Meats were decent. No wagyu for sure. There's not a lot of selection but for the price you're paying ($31.99/pp), I'm not complaining. I'd say the pricing and value you get from this spot matches with the quality of food provided. If it were pricier, than I would prefer just getting my shabu fix in OC. The next time we're in the area, we hope to try the AYCE shabu + sushi option. read more

I have been here three times now the first two time service was great food was amazing. However this last time our meat was super inconsistent. even when ordering multiples of the same meat at a time every tray looked different. My rib eye tasted like ground up hamburger meat and was even a little brown. The bean sprouts smelled rotten. The soda was flat. the rice was old, cold and crunchy. I enjoy bringing my family here all the time. I enjoy the variety of sushi and the shabu. The only thing that keeps me from going her consistently and on different occasions is the lack of broth options. I really want to support and invite friends also because the owner has always been so nice! I feel like there can be a big influx on customers if there was the popular sukiyaki option. Been here twice and won't be returning. All you can eat sushi is mediocre at best. Come here if you strictly like to eat sushi rolls. Why do they keep searing the sushi? We would get the same dish back to back and one would be seared and one would be raw. I didn't come here to eat BBQ. I want the sushi raw, or aleast keep it consistent. The shabu dipping sauces are all way too sweet. The meats are okay and the side dishes/ salad bar are all overcooked or lack flavor. The shabu soup base was flavorless + the dipping sauces are terrible. The all you can eat "fill out yourself" paper menu for sushi clearly says mussells but it doesnt say "limited 1 person". They told us it's only 1 per person when we ordered a third for a table of 2 people. There are a lot of items that are not on the AYCE menu like takoyaki so you spend more money on top of the 30$. We waited for 10 min and had to ask and then they told us the limited item rule even though it doesn't say on the paper menu. The rooms inside looks dirty. There was 2 to 3 nats flying around the food and tables the entire time we were eating. The walls and decor gave a dingy feeling where everything seemed damp and sticky. I forgot what the name of our server was but he was the only one wearing a white shirt while everyone else wore black. He was so attentive and so nice. He sat us down, got out menus and we got the hot pot option. Within minutes our server had everything set and ready to go. This place has a buffet bar for the hot pot items like lots of veggies, a sauce bar, 3 noodle options & other proteins like calm, imitation crab, shrimp & etc. They also had a few hot bar items like rice, fried rice, noodles, fried shrimp & etc The meat options were ribeye, brisket, beef belly & pork belly. We tried everything but the pork and I got the miso broth while my husband got the regular broth. Everything was really good. Our usual local sushi spot changed its menu and its quality went way down so we were on the hunt for a new spot and let me tell you, THIS IS IT. WOW. Unfortunately the food doesn't align with the 4 star reviews seen on here. The different names should've been the first indicator of what was to come. This place is advertised as "shabu Garden" , but the restaurant goes by the name " Taioys Sushi & Poki" Customers service was great! Staff was attentive and readily available. Other than that, the place looked fairly run down, smelled like cleaner , and place was dim. The salad bar items such as calamari & tempura were not even warm- as if it was cooked earlier that day and left out . Rice was sitting in a pot, signs of hardening. This place advertises AYCE hot pot , or AYCE Hot Pot + AYCE Sushi. What they don't tell you is that with the sushi option- this does not include premium rolls; you get an extremely limited selection. We opted to do the hot pot, and order 1 roll by itself. Sushi was mid at best, lacks fresh quality, on par with Chinese buffet sushi - not bad but not great either. I was disappointed to see that they only offered 3 options for broth- original, Miso & Original Spicy. The original honestly tasted like salt water , no flavor. Meats weren't bad, really added to the flavor of the hot pot. Be advised that they add 15% to your bill for gratuity. Wish this would have been a better experience. Aside from this place being the only AYCE shabu hot pot spot in Riverside, I'd drive to Ontario Boiling World or OC . Same price, much better cleaner quality. read more

Honestly so good, always a go to especially if we're having separate cravings. I'll usually do Sushi and my girlfriend does the shabu or vice versa. Very tasty food and a wide variety of choices. Amazing customer service very efficient, helpful, along with telling us everything we need to know. The venue is stunning especially if you come early enough for a garden seat and the music is always a vibe if you love Japanese City Pop! If I could give them 0 stars I would. My family and I came in and nobody greeted us. Another family was sitting there and looked very angry. I asked them if they've been waiting long and they said yes. I waited another 20 minutes and still wasn't acknowledged. We ended up going to Wang Cho for dinner. From the looks of it, they didn't even have a lot of ingredients for their hot pot which is disappointing. Do yourself a favor and go to San Bernardino to Hello Shabu for hot pot. I walked into Shabu Garden with high expectations based on the reviews and their Instagram page. Unfortunately, my experience didn't live up to the hype. The biggest issue with this restaurant is that they are seriously understaffed. I visited on a Saturday afternoon around 4:15 PM. I was told there would be a 10-15 minute wait, which turned into nearly 20. Not a big deal. However, once we were seated, it took another 10 minutes before anyone came to take our drink order, ask about soup bases, or even check if we had been there before. That was my first red flag. The staff wasn't slacking off; they were clearly overwhelmed, running around trying to keep up with seated guests while also cleaning tables. We opted for the hot pot (or "shabu," as they call it). After ordering our soup bases, our server suggested we grab items from the buffet-style setup. I've been to several hot pot and KBBQ spots over the years, and I'd rank this setup in the bottom 50%. They offered some hot items like rice, egg rolls, and fried shrimp, as well as cold items like seafood, tofu, and ramen. While some things were decent, others were just bad. The white rice, in particular, was terrible. This was surprising, given that they also serve sushi. It was somehow both sticky and dry at the same time. I wish they had left it in a rice cooker for guests to scoop themselves rather than placing it in a container. One thing I did enjoy was their sauce selection. It was fantastic. They had peanut sauce, which I love. I do wish they had kimchi, but since this is a Japanese hot pot spot, I understand why they didn't. Another issue was the self-serve soda station. They were out of clean cups, and it took nearly 15 minutes for them to bring more. By the time I got back to my table, the soup had arrived, but we hadn't had a chance to order meat yet, so we just stared at our boiling vegetables for another 5-10 minutes. When the meat finally arrived, it was excellent. They only offer four meat options, but they're solid choices, so I have no complaints there. Combined with the sauces, everything tasted great. The original broth, in particular, was phenomenal. One of the best I've ever had. But despite that, I don't see myself coming back. The lighting in the restaurant was horrible, very dim, which made it difficult to see if the meat was cooked properly. On top of that, the tables were way too small for hot pot. The burner and pot took up almost half the table space, leaving us feeling squished. It was uncomfortable trying to cook, eat, and manage everything in such a cramped setup. The final straw, and the reason I'm actually writing this review, was the automatic tip. A $19.19 gratuity was added to my $158 bill for four adults, with no signage indicating this policy. I understand tipping, and I recognize that the servers were working hard, but automatically adding a tip, especially at a place where we cooked our own food and retrieved our own items from the buffet, is frustrating. Overall, the food had its highlights, but the understaffing, slow service, poor lighting, cramped tables, and unexpected gratuity make it hard for me to recommend this place or return myself. read more

My first time having hot pot and I loved it! They sent over a few different meats for us to try and although some were out of my comfort zone they were all tasty. There was a good selection of other foods we could add to the soup, also. We also did the all you can eat sushi. All very good rolls. The server wisely advised us to take it easy on ordering rolls. Even though it's all-you-can-eat the rolls were normal to large size, so our little group ordered one each and split them. All were delicious! The owner came around to say "Hi," and chat. My wife and I are foodies, and we love sushi. We also love Shabu Shabu. This restaurant has a lot to offer, and we tried their AYCE Shabu Shabu and sushi. The sushi chef has 35+ years experience and it shows. Our server was Aydan, and he was very attentive and professional. He knows how to take great care of guests. The interior isn't gushing with stereotypical Japanese decor, it's a modern touch with a Japanese influence. That's always nice. Hands down one of the worst shabu experiences I've had. The "broth" tasted like someone just added chili flakes to hot water--zero flavor, zero effort. You have to grab your own bowls, utensils, and pretty much do the server's job for them because they never check in. And the cherry on top? Spacious place and easy to miss as the main sign is a Japanese sushi restaurant name and not Shabu Garden. AYCE Shabu is $29.99, and add $10 for AYCE sushi. Gratuity is included at the end. The broths were very limited. 3 choices and they all were of miso base. Appetizer bar was a little sad, and cups for drinks and rice were barely stocked. Funny side note - we've been to Chimak Chicken and Beer which is in a separate corner of the building - but you walk through the main restaurant for the restroom! Anyway - the food! Literally the WORST service I have ever received. Our table was not checked on once, so we couldn't even order more meat. Our waiter, shawn, was messing around with the other workers and not checking on anyone in our section. The hotpot itself was good, but our stove turned off in the middle of our time. We each got a sushi roll as well, my tuna roll was literally warm and the cream cheese in our Philadelphia roll tasted expired. When my husband and I walked in, we weren't greeted at all. Instead, the waitresses were busy laughing and playing around with what looked like their friends. The lack of professionalism was really disappointing. Unless you're with a big group that they feel like paying attention to, don't expect good service here. We didn't get all the sushi we ordered and we had left 3 pieces of sushi on the table and were charged $5 also they added 15% gratuity and didn't tell us so we left a tip only to see a super small sign on the way out saying gratuity is automatically added.
