When I came in recently, they still had their Valentine's Day stuff out like greeting cards etc. I previously had trouble finding a good card for my boyfriend at target, they all were kinda lame. The cards they had here were great, Even though it was past vday, I ended up picking up a card to give to my boyfriend for another occasion because it was just too perfect. And, it was less than I paid for the dumb card from target! They have an awesome selection of items here for reasonable prices. You really could find a unique gift for just about anyone in this store, I was finding so much stuff I wanted to purchase which is rare for me. I didn't want to leave the store! They have lots of cool Philly inspired things. I also loved that they had a lot of things with french bulldogs on them because I have a frenchie. They have a little bit of everything - home goods, jewelry, candles, Philly-themed gifts, wedding-themed gifts, baby gifts and more. This is a fantastic place to buy a wedding gift, housewarming gift, or some cute little items for your own place. I found what I was looking for within 2 minutes (a square, laquered serving tray with handles that I had searched for in 5 different shops already) and the salesperson assisted with pointing out some other similar options and checking their stock for other variations. They had a few different ones with different images painted on them, they were really beautiful. First of all, love what these ladies have done to 13th street, what a mecca this has become for the thirsty, hungry and....shoppingy? This store had the most adorable stuff, my father and I went in on Valentines day and we were able to find the cutest martini glasses for my mother, the woman who has everything.... and that says something! I could also accessorize myself to the hills in there, great taste, wonderful selection, and it's not like off the charts expensive! If you need a hostess gift or an amazing piece to finish your outfit, this is the spot! This store is SO CUTE! I am obsessed with like 80% of the products they carry. Cheeky mugs, fashionable jewelry, cookbooks and candles; the list goes on. They have sections for newlyweds, outdoorsmen, and babies. They sell a lot of Philadelphia themed products (coasters with each neighborhood on them, Philly Wine totes, historic books, etc), the list goes on and on. I literally brought my boyfriend in here and pointed to just about everything to show him what I like. He was able to get a good looking cheese plate and board set, for only $44! I will absolutely be coming here for more gifts, for myself and others! read more

This is really a fantastic store - the other reviewers have said it all. I'm not sure who their buyer is, but he/she has a brilliant taste. Whether you're looking for an amazing candle, gorgeous new earrings, or funky housewares, Open House has the coolest options around. I'm taking off a couple of stars for a couple of reasons. I rated the price range as moderate and it is...but their prices seem to run about 10% higher than other local Philly shops for identical items. The higher prices may explain why they're always almost overstaffed, but with so many people behind the counter I'd hope for consistently stellar service and that's not really what I get (I'm hardly the needy customer type, but it wouldn't kill them to say hello). Still...Open House (and their other shop, Verde, across the street) remains one of my favorite stores in Center City for browsing and it's one of my first stops if I need a gift. read more

Wow. This is the amazing gift shop I was always looking for in Philadelphia. The store is absolutely packed with great stuff for a bunch of different people in your life. It's almost overwhelming. There's baby stuff, candles and incense, college- and post-college-kid stuff, Kikkerland stuff, and a bunch of Philly-centric stuff like mugs, posters, t-shirts, pillows. Right now they've got Autumn and Christmas things, but I imagine that area rotates during the year. Open House has the most unique selection of items I have ever come across in a homestyle boutique such as theirs; from baby clothing, toys, and books to jewelry, drinkware, quirky novelties for the kitchen, handmade soda tab purses and other eco-friendly gifts, stationery/journals, and so much more! Given the variety of items (which takes up most of the store), there isn't much walking space, especially when there are more customers in the shop, but I was delighted that the staff made sure I was attended to even though I was just browsing. What an awesome little gem in Philly's Midtown Village section. First of all, they carry a lot of items I've seen around town, such as the "I (insert pretzel) Philly" mugs. They have a lot of Philly specific stuff, which is cool because it can be hard to find neighborhood specific coasters and mugs. I popped in around the holidays and it was crazy busy, but I did manage to score the perfect gift for my husband. Prices are a bit expensive, but about what you'd expect for a boutique store. This place is great for gifts. I did some holiday shopping there. Really cute stuff. Very polite employees. I found myself checking the price tags a good bit and wishing a few knick knacks were cheaper than they actually were. But it's nice to shop somewhere a little more obscure and get some things that not everybody has. I absolutely LOVE this store! It is my "go to" for gift or when I just want something cute to treat myself to. Open House literally has any and every price point possible, from inexpensive costume jewelry to high-end pieces of furniture. I have sent countless friends into the shop and they all love it as much as I do. Everywhere you turn, you're likely to find yet another thing you want to buy. They source as much as they can from local designers, which I LOVE, and have a really unique and carefully thought out offering of goods. I was a bit torn on how many stars to give Open House as there is one truly unpleasant associate that works here - she may even be a manager. Which, in my opinion, is a terrible shame. Usually, you can find great service at Open House, but if you encounter the older associate - BEWARE, she is cold and far from friendly. She somehow usually makes me feel dumb for asking for help and I honestly have never seen her smile. I will say, though, that even with this woman, I still go into Open House at least once a week, which should say quite a bit considering my one complaint. read more

Came to this store looking for a Philadelphia-themed wedding present for a friend who moved away. (The store came at the highest recommendation from a work friend) There was a decent sized Philadelphia goods selection, and there was a ton of other unique gifts. Even more convenient, they had cards and gift wrapping so I only had to go to one store. The huge selection that Open House had was really helpful because I didn't really have a specific gift in mind. I was able to browse until something jumped or at me. Just went into this store with a few friends, ready to buy some souvenirs from Philly, and while there were plenty of cute things, we had a terrible experience. My friend saw a cute bracelet and picked it up to try it on. Instead of just nicely asking my friend not to pick up the jewelry, the woman with the glasses and the flower tattoos on her arms was extremely rude, shoved her and aggressively told her not to touch the jewelry. In response my friend apologized and tried to put the bracelet back and she again rudely grabbed it from her. There was absolutely no reason to have an attitude. That associate should be fired since she's clearly causing the store's sales to decline. read more

Awesomely amazing store! Such a great variety of gifts especially for the Philadelphia enthusiast. From the beautiful jewelry to the cool novelty-ish gifts (whiskey stones anyone?) this store could be a one stop holiday shopping experience. The only thing negative I have to say about this house and their other store, Verde (which also has great finds, including an abundance of cool jewelry), is the sales staff. For a lack of a better word I find them both snobby and unwelcoming. They looked at me, going so far as to almost follow me around as though I was going to swipe some merch. It's a very uncomfortable feeling to have when seeking some retail therapy. Oh well, the unpleasant staff cannot keep me away from the cool merchandise. Beware of the misleading 50% off signs. They placed a table full of desk name plates with funny sayings near the front of the store. There were 50% off signs all over the table. I bought two and was charged full price. Found out that only the actual name plates that the signs were taped to were 50% off. All others were full price. It was not clear at all. read more

I've been here way too many times that I gotta shout it out in a good review because this place is a lady's dream. I'm emphasizing lady because I can't see a dude spending as much time in here as this store is filled to the brim with fun and quirky knick knacks. Recently I went in to find a cute wedding card for my friends (check!) and then they had these truly adorable tiny advice books called "Husband Don'ts" and "Wives Don't" written in 1913 with all these rules that were great and funny. A good find to add to my wedding gift! In fact, I've been here many times to find gifts and have been really successful. Their stock changes at a pretty good rate so you can always find new fun kitchen stuff as well as great baby gifts. I got my boyfriend his cute orange french press in there and a money clip that he loves. I've also purchased jewelery from here which tends to be on the more expensive side, but really unique and fun. read more
