But after taking my first bite, I was sad. Basically, there was barely Mac and cheese and so much pulled pork. To be honest, I didn't like the pulled pork, it was soo salty. After long nights of work, I have become very appreciative of ORK's hours and availability for food late at night. It still isn't as good as a lot of other places, but it definitely satisfies me now. Open Rice Kitchen (ORK) is a great place to get fairly inexpensive good food. I generally get their Soft Scrambled Egg over rice with Shrimp or the Kimchee Fried Rice. My husband and I also like to try things off the daily specials now and then. Every once in awhile, their rice is a little under cooked for my taste, however, I still return for the the good flavor and the variety. The portions are fairly large. You can definitely eat half, pack it up, and eat the other half later for the rice dishes. The environment can get a little loud depending on the time of day, it is a college town after all, but I'm generally able to carry on a conversation comfortably with my dining party. Before you read too much into my three star review, know that I came here after picnic day and the menu items were limited. I have seen other options in yelp pics that look delicious and I would have loved to try them! But anyways, I came here around 9pm, I was exhausted and hadn't eaten basically all day. My eyes were bigger than my stomach and I ordered the kimchi rice and beef and broccoli. The beef and broccoli kinda looked gross and judging by my friends comments it was, so I didn't eat it. I did eat the fried rice, which was delicious once I added about 4 packets of soy sauce and covered it in Sriracha (it was super dry). But it did like it and it came with a fries egg on top which was good... I'm not going to either recommend or not recommend this place as there was a line out the door because it was picnic day and I'm sure the food quality was not up to their usual standards. The workers were super friendly especially for being so swamped. The place is definitely one of the cleanest places I've been to in Davis. Bright with big windows and good seating. Used an Opt Town app to get a "buy 2 drinks+one plate, get one free plate" with a "$5 kung pao chicken plate" to get two plates of food and two milk teas for $10! Milk teas were alright. The kung pao chicken was much too bland for me. Went up to the counter to ask for salt and pepper since there isn't any on the tables. Based on this first experience, this place isn't the first place I would think of when hungry, but I might consider going back if I was already in the area and had a deal to save some money. read more

I come here for the Wonton Noodle Soup and that's about it. For about $5, I am pretty satisfied with it! The flavors are definitely not resemblant of the good ol' Wonton Noodle Soup from my favorite Chinese place, but it's definitely delicious. Comes with egg noodles, bok choy, wontons, and sliced thin Chinese BBQ pork. ORK always seems to have online deals where if you check in on social media you'll get a discount. I actually tend to avoid these nights because sometimes when they do have these deals, not everything on the menu is available to order, just some of the specials. I have yet to try some of their popular items such as Kimchee Fried Rice and popcorn chicken but I think I'll pass for now. Their Beef Chow Fun is also pretty bland. ORK is also a popular place for tea and boba. I'm no boba expert, so I'm not sure how they compare to the other boba joints around here. I usually get Thai tea with boba at this place and it's delicious. They frequently have $1 deals on their drinks, so check out their Facebook page to stay updated. ORK has free wi-fi! I'm not sure if the reason I come here and leave unhappy is because I keep ordering the wrong items or if it's simply because ORK is really not that great. I opted for a noodles dish this time - Singapore spicy noodles. You get to choose either chow fun or vermicelli noodles; I went with the chow fun. What I found interesting was this dish smelled like yellow curry paste. I'm not sure if this is typical in Singapore noodles, but I'm not the biggest fan. My dish also contained small pieces of eggshells, which made it unpleasant to eat. What I did enjoy though were the small bbq pork pieces in my noodles. I've been coming here to Open Rice Kitchen for the last 5 years and the only way I can truly describe it is very hit or miss. The Good: -50¢ wings on Sunday! I tried this for the first time a year ago and was so surprised by how good the wings are for so cheap. My boyfriend loves the Salt and Pepper ones and we're both not Sriracha people so we've never tried them. The wings are always perfectly cooked, hot and crispy, and just overall delicious. I literally ordered 30 last night with no regrets yeeeee -the appetizers and anything that is on the Monday- Wednesday specials menu. From $1 boba to $5 entrees and the appetizers in between, the specials are the most worth it, and being mass produced, they are usually the most consistent in quality. You can always count on the food being a little greasy though. I love the pork belly sliders! The Hit or Miss: -Any of the entrées on a day that isn't a special that day. For some reason the entrees are always inconsistent on these days (aka pork belly fried rice on Thursday). I've gotten the pork belly rice without pork belly, food so salty that it was inedible from the first bite, or chow fun that was still white because it barely had any sauce. If you're ordering to-go I highly recommend you taste your dishes before you leave, or at least inspecting them first. - Any other entree besides the soup noodles. The Bad: - Just don't get the soup noodles. They are always crazy bland, and the broth might as well be water because it's always so tasteless. Once in a while I'll crave wonton noodle soup and this place just makes me sad when I eat it - If you're health conscious and don't want your food swimming in grease for the most part this is not the restaurant for you The servers are always friendly though, and the food always comes our quickly. They were a vendor at a downtown festival on October 10th and decided to get the two piece combo with fried rice, broccoli beef, and teriyaki chicken (I don't use the teriyaki sauce) and all I can say is I'm pretty sure this is the place that is causing me food poisoning that I'm dealing with right now. Cute gem of Davis. It's at the very end of what seems to be a "little town" of a lit up street full of restaurants and bars. The place itself is fairly decent sized. There are many specials every day and it seems to be a hot spot for students. The menu is full of great different options. I ordered the Veggie Chow Mein and the portion was a good size for $7ish!! It's overly sauced but I love saucy dishes so I loved the saltiness of the soy sauce. The wait wasn't too long but it was pretty crowded on a Saturday night as well. I highly recommend making the stop for anyone who is craving chinese food. They serve their plates on plastic plates!! When a restaurant is opened super late, that is always a plus. Open Rice Kitchen is usually my go to stop after a long day of shopping at the outlets. Not only is it delicious food, but it's cheap! With prices so low, it gives any struggling college student something to eat other than sodium loaded noodles. Nestled on the eastside of downtown Davis, this small restaurant serves sizzling stir-fried noodles and rice. I usually stop by here at night, so parking isn't too bad. I can see parking being a bit of a problem during the day time, or even late Friday or Saturdays. You can try to park in Ace Hardware's parking lot or try parking in the back. You can't really go wrong with anything on the menu. I usually order something on their daily special menu. You can see what the specials are by giving them a like on their Facebook page. The most current was spam fried rice and black pepper udon with chicken for only $6.00 each!!! That's amazing! You know when you have a good stir-fry when you can taste the "wok" flavor. Another staple on the menu is the beef ho fun. The reason why I knocked out a star is because depending on the chefs that are there, your food might be a tad bit on the oily side. Other than that, this place is solid. I was only able to try their Thai tea on the drink menu and it was alright. I might be more biased towards that because I do brew my own Thai tea at home, so nothing beats homemade tea. They allowed me to customize my drink a bit, more tea and less half&half, so it was good. The boba, on the other hand, was a bit on the hard chewy side. It might be that I was there late, but if you are going to serve boba, better make it right. I definitely do recommend this place if you want something cheap and filling. Oh yes, one more thing, you might hit a long line and wait due to students going in groups. The boba and milk tea here is terrible. While they give you a huge cup, the boba to tea ratio is always off. The boba itself does not taste fresh at all- sometimes really soft, sometimes really hard, very inconsistent. The milk tea is also made with powders and they definitely taste like it. Probably the worst boba I've ever had. The food is not any better. All the food is generally really greasy, and leaves me feeling gross afterwards.
