Talk about a good bang for your buck! Came here for lunch with two friends and we each got an entree, and the total before tax only came out to about $37! I had the spicy beef noodle soup. It was not spicy at all, like not even a hint. But I asked the lady for some chili sauce/oil and she gave me this really fragrant mala chili oil that elevated my noodles a ton! The beef was tender and generous given the price, and so were the noodles. One of my friends got their chicken cutlet with black pepper sauce; we all thought it was nice and juicy and well-portioned. My other friend got their mapo tofu and didn't enjoy it that much; sort of had a mushroom-y flavor with no mala profile. Very home-like spot. Service is bare minimum. Everything is super casual. New favorite restaurant, if ur Chinese this has all of the childhood restaurant favorites. All great prices for the portions. We had the seafood tofu hotpot, shrimp wonton, garlic green bean, mongolian beef, half hainan chicken, and ny steak spaghetti to-go. Was a little busy at 7 on a holiday so we waited like ten minutes to get our order in, the guy memorized our order right as I said it lol. He confirmed and we got our soup in ten mins, ten mins for green beans and mongolian beef, another ten minutes for our chicken, then like seven for hotpot. Most disappointing was chicken, it's not hainan at all and just standard hong kong white chicken. Taste is fine and fresh but was sad. Best was the seafood hotpot AND the wonton soup. Both had great flavor and saltiness and was just sooo good. Wontons were very tasty and had a lot of meat, definitely both pork and shrimp, and soup even had little shrimp in it ifkyk. The seafood hotpot had great variety and flavor, my parents were pleased with the fish bits in it, the tofu was yummy bc it's fried tofu, the crab texture was not great maybe overcooked and I didn't like the soft cucumber but otherwise the broccoli scallop shrimp tofu fish bok choy was all great. Green beans and mongolian beef SERIOUSLY needed some wok flavor and wish the beef had black pepper because the seasoning was a bit lacking (wok flavor would be great here) and overall the vegetables were a little undercooked. They were addictive though I definitely kept going back for more. Hot tea is jasmine tea. Service was a bit lackluster but totally understandable and even though I was in a rush we were in and out by an hour and like ten minutes which worked. Ambiance wise, I didn't like how the lights are half brighter and whiter than the sun and half nicely softly lit. Tables are nice wood and a bit sticky but okay. There's random Chinese TV on the walls, very traditional lol and I think no music. Overall very pleased! Will definitely come back as much as possible to support, and highly highly recommend. Came on a Sunday during lunch hour, so it was quite busy! The pork belly is super crispy and succulent. The green beans are slightly crispy and reminds me of DTF green beans, flavorful and cooked perfectly. The special rice dish comes with honey lemon ice tea. We're far out from Davis but was in town and glad we came to try this place out. Service is good too. We loved it so much we decided to order their house fried rice to go so we can have it for dinner. Highly recommend! Tim's Kitchen is hands-down my favorite HK cafe to support whenever I'm in Davis. The prices seem to be inflation-proof but the quality of their food is not jeopardized at all. The owners speak Cantonese and Mandarin, so I am able to practice my Canto whenever I order, haha. I've already brought my husband several times with me, and he seconds my opinion regarding the food (he especially loves their pork belly dish). The service is pretty attentive for a family-run restaurant, and the AC is cold. The ambiance is chill and generally quiet, so I always have a peaceful place to enjoy my lunch. I never have to wait long for my meal, and the food is always fresh. Tim's Kitchen is the definition of HK home cooking, and I am very happy that there is such a place in Davis. With most of the entrees, you either get a free soda or lemon tea, and I always get the lemon tea. The prawn dishes, which generally run you at least $16 elsewhere, are only $13 at Tim's Kitchen, so it is my go-to protein. They are always cooked well and never overcooked or rubbery. My favorite so far is their prawns with green bean, in a signature HK black bean garlic sauce! I have also had their Hainanese Chicken Rice (海南雞飯) and the chicken is cooked perfectly and pairs wonderfully with their special rice. The ginger and scallion oil is also delicious. I've had their baked spaghetti prawns in cream sauce and that is sooo yummy. The layer of melted cheese on top is broiled to perfection. There are always people ordering DoorDash, Hungry Panda, etc, so business is always stable for Tim's Kitchen. It makes me happy that others enjoy their food as much as I do. I will continue to support Tim's Kitchen for the long haul and highly recommend coming to support this establishment if you're ever in the Davis area, or even passing by on I-80!! read more

I've been here multiple times and it's a great easy cheap lunch spot especially for students on a budget. Most meals are ~$11-12 and are decently portioned. I love the hainan chicken rice, it's my go to when I come here. The meal comes with pickled veggies which I love bc most places just have steamed veggies. The ginger scallion sauce is amazing too. Wow, their dishes had some wonderful flavors! Very delicious, memorable chowfun, and green beans were so fresh, and flavorful. Spicy wontons had that slightly numbing star anise in it, which I love! The only things I marked a point off is on the beef that was not tender, so I'd probably order pork, chicken or shrimp instead next time. Green onion pancake was crispy and yummy. Because it is fusion it does tend to be a little sweeter, but it has overall good flavors. The tomato and egg had a lot of green onion, perfect heat on the eggs, and green beans had good bite. Meat quality was normal in all the dishes, really good considering the price. Chinese pastas have never been my thing, but if you enjoy that category these are nice. A lot of meat and sauce. For me it's always too monotonous in texture and lacking in flavor. Food came out when it finished cooking so you had food almost immediately. My fiance and I decided to drive up to Davis to grab Shah's initially but found out the whole complex was under renovations. So we deciddd to grab Chinese. We used to live in Davis and never saw this place before and decided to give it a try! My fiance and I loved their salt pepper pork chops, pork belly which was super crispy and I loved their walnut prawns! The only critique we have is that we did not enjoy the spicy green beans as much. It wasn't flavorful enough and it was just a preference for us. The green beans were almost like steamed like rather than stir fried. But we ordered a lot of food and enjoyed everything about it. The lady who was our waitress was super friendly and she gave us a great service! I really liked the interior of the restaurant since it looked super Chinese and gave me the confidence that this will be authentic Chinese food! Not to be mistaken for Tim's Hawaiian on 2nd or 3rd, this is a Cantonese style restaurant. The servers are nice but have a little bit of a hard time speaking English. Food comes out slow. Came here around lunch time and it was relatively empty but started to pick up at noon. The interior was very simple and clean. I was seated immediately and decided to order the NY steak with black pepper sauce rice plate and got the honey lemon tea as a drink. The order came out promptly on a sizzling plate, which I accidentally did burn myself touching so do be cautious. The sauce came in a separate gravy boat and I doused the whole plate with it. The steak was a very substantial in size and there was plenty of fluffy white rice to pair with it. Don't come here and expect a medium rare steak though, it's sitting on a hot sizzling plate so it's going to be well done but that's the nature of the dish! The steak was sitting on on white onions so they tendered up nicely. The steak itself had a some nice char to it and there was a bit of fat on the cut so it was not dry which I enjoyed. The sauce was savory, salty, and tasted great with the plain rice! I expected to pay extra for the honey lemon tea but it was free with the meal so that was a huge plus! It was sweet and very refreshing. I will definitely be coming back here to try the other dishes and sauce options! Also random side note, they seem to speak canto and mando here! read more

There were not many customers when we arrived on a Monday at a little after noon. Our questions were answered and we then ordered. My friend ordered one of the baked dishes. We were warned that it would take awhile, about 20 minutes, before our food would arrive. It did take awhile but we didn't time it as we were talking. I had ordered the "Chicken Steak with Portuguese Sauce over Spaghetti" There was not much chicken and what was there were small pieces of chicken thighs with gristle. There was also carrot, potato, bell pepper, and tomato in the dish and was served with two pieces of broccoli. The Portuguese sauce is a coconut curry. It was a little bland. A bit of salt (and I'm sensitive to salt) would have improved the dish. The portion was large and I have enough leftovers for two more meals, though I'll probably add a bit more chicken. A number of prior reviews mentioned that you got your choice of beverage when ordering an entree. That seems to be only for combo meals. For regular entrees you can only choose a soda or iced tea. We both agreed that we'd only return if we were joining others who wanted to eat there. read more

Omg so happy me and a girlfriend stumbled upon this place! Hidden away in a corner of college town with beautiful lights hanging from the ceiling- this place was a hidden Gem! Prices are lower than your other typical places and the portions were very generous! Reminded me of how Chinese places used to be with their portions and affordable-ness. Orange Chicken? Authentically flavored with REAL orange. It's sweet and sticky like Panda Express but the flavor is turned up for sure! The shrimp fried rice was traditional and filling but missing some soy sauce. I ate here for the first time recently with my husband and was really impressed! This wasn't our first choice but it was closer to where we parked so we just went for it. The prices are great and it's actually super spacious inside. If you're old like me and remember the Disney show "Out of the box" i literally experienced that moment in the intro where the kids climb into their cardboard box creation and it's an entire clubhouse inside. After entering, we were greeted immediately and told to pick any table. We sat at one of the booths which was really nice. Felt a bit intimate and cozy. I remember this space fondly because Aioli used to be here; but alas, the nostalgia was not enough to save our experience. We came here on a Wedneday for dinner around 5:30pm and the AC wasn't on on a particularly warm day in Davis. They turned it on after 3-4 more parties came in after us, but there were also people sitting before us, so I'm not sure about their decision to delay the comfort. Next, we were told to pick any table, but then we weren't given menus for a few minutes. Then, no drinks, not even water. When we ordered, the staff told us that she could remember our order (she didn't write anything down), but then she got the drinks mixed up. The dishes came out one at a time, with appetizers coming out in the middle of our meal. Minutes passed between dishes coming out, so people were eating at different times. My order, the unagi bowl, came DRENCHED in sauce. It was so much, so salty, I had to scrape a bunch of it off. When I was ordering, I asked if there were any veggies. I was told, "not really, there are 3 tiny pieces. If you want veggies, you have to order extra". Fair, so we ordered some broccoli as well. One of the most perplexing parts of the dining experience was the menu. My mom saw a photo of a dish on the menu that she really wanted. When she pointed to it to order, she was told that they don't make that dish - it's just a nice looking photo only. Then why have it on the menu?!?
