Squash curry with eggplant and fried tofu
    Jacquelin S.

We arrived for lunch on a Thursday at around 11:45a..m. We were the only customers when we arrived. One orders at the counter and picks up plastic spoons and chopsticks to the side. There were plenty of tables to choose from. All tables had an abundance of electrical outlets should anyone need to charge their electronics. Our food was brought to our table, already packaged as if for a to-go order. That was convenient for me since I generally always take home leftovers. I ordered the squash curry rice bowl. My friend had dumplings. My curry was delicious. I enjoyed the cold soft-boiled egg that came with it. There was plenty of food for me for two meals. My friend said her dumplings were very good. Not oily. While we were eating a few other people came to order to-go and a couple others dined in. This restaurant deserves more customers.

I love Dah Bao!! I come every time I'm in Davis. It is such an underrated place. I order the squash curry and it's amazing every time I get it. It comes with so much food, definitely worth your money.

Dah Bao oh dah Bao, such a random Gem of a restaurant found while driving through Davis. I'm a sucker for buns and decided to give this place a try. We got 3 items and all were 10/10. 5 pieces of saucy pork buns, braised pork Belly bowl, and spicy beef noodle soup. Worker is bilingual and speaks both Chinese and English. Everything was served fairly quickly but it was on a Sunday afternoon. Every dish got tons of flavor and portions were astronomical. Took a few meals to kill everything. We also ordered 3 more items to go but maybe cus it was eaten hours later, it wasn't 10/10 but will return to try again. Small little restaurant got enough seats along with outdoor seating. They got the cleanest single stall restroom. Only down side was they did not sell soda, only Boba drinks, but they did serve free water.

Good food, large portions with enough to take home. The drinks are not as flavorful as other places, particularly the Yakult drinks which did not have much Yakult flavor. It was very warm and muggy inside, so it was a little uncomfortable to eat there on a warmer spring evening. We ended not finishing our meal and took it home to finish because my wife and kids were complaining about how hot and muggy they were. Overall a good place to get food, but their drinks are not as good as other Boba/Tea shops in town. Also for the comfort of customers, they should turn on the A/C (might have been broken, but I didn't ask). We did like their food which was flavorful and would go back for their other food dishes, but may get our tea drinks elsewhere.

This place is awesome! It's great bc in the space where there are so many boba places in Davis, it truly sets itself apart from the others. For one, it's your friendly neighborhood hero. It may not be the one you want, but it's the one we all deserve. And need. The food is awesome! Nice Taiwanese cuisine that can take days to prepare. Prices are actually better than the ones that serve both boba and noodle soups near campus. IYKYK The boba drinks are also quite delish! Definitely a great date place, place to unwind, hang out with friends, grab a quick bite, or get a nice cold one. Bc it does have location, it's become a hidden gem. Definitely worth the a treasure hunt or a discovery expedition. LOC: A+ (approved by all Asian parents)

Not a bad price for takeout. Through Fantuan $15 for a huge portion of noodles and $12 for 5 buns. That's nice because it is a ways away. The bun dough was not spongy and instead nicely bouncy and soft. Veggie had a lot of egg and the juices of the pork didn't mush up the wrapper. Noodles were very very large (the container is quite deep) but it was quite sweet. I did come with a lot of minced rendered pork and edamame giving it good variety in texture. Because it was so heavy and oily I added spinach and tofu to make it a bit lighter and to balance the sweetness and it was much better. Not too sure if I'd come back, but I could see myself thinking about this place when I want buns.

Perfect for a snack or meal. The Lion's Head Meatballs were tender and soft with a strong ginger flavor. Overall very light flavor meal - note they fill half the container with rice so the container was very heavy. Cabbage was boiled and not much flavor overall. The Braised Pork Belly was amazing. Light 5-spiced with little sweetness. Tender and so delicious! Egg in both were soft boil runny yolk. Boba was delicious! Soft and sweet. A good selection of flavors. Buns were tasty but nothing spectacular. Great if you're looking for a snack. Cashier was very efficient and professional. We had to wait a bit because she was the only person making the drinks while also taking orders

Yummy boba place! The service was quick as we were the only ones at the time, but once we got our order it filled up quick. There are also some food options I will have to try next time. There was plenty of seating to eat and enjoy.

Came here to try out their buns! It was a relatively small shop but I was just grabbing some buns to go. I got 2 veggie buns and a saucy pork bun and both fillings were delicious! The saucy pork bun was indeed very saucy and full of pork sausage (the same type of sausage you'd find in a Vietnamese Bánh mi I'd say). It was savory and lightly sweet from the sauce and the outer bun was soft and moist. The ratio of filling to bun was good too! The veggie bun had mushrooms, cabbage, and egg. It was equally delicious, particularly with the complimentary ginger and black bean sauce. The buns are generous in size, I could honestly be filled with 2 and definitely with 3 and considering the price, I would say that's a steal! Would definitely recommend coming here for the buns! I would love to come back another day to try the drinks or perhaps the other menu items.

Summary: lovely little boba + small foods joint, good value for money, good drinks and food, great service! Food items: serves some traditional Chinese foods like beef noodle soup, lions head meatballs, and baos/buns. Some more modern foods like popcorn chicken too. Honestly, all the food is pretty great. I have not been disappointed by any of it. I really suggest the beef noodle soup, buns, and popcorn chicken though. I think the popcorn chicken here is got to be one of the best values in town! If I have any critiques, I think the beef roll is a little different than what I normally expect but still tastes great. It is thinner and longer than what I traditionally associate with beef rolls. Still great flavor and taste. Drinks: I really like the drinks but they run a bit sweeter than some of the other boba places in town so I always ask for a bit less sweet.

Dah Bao is such a hidden gem, and despite it being out of the way of the general David downtown area, they really deliver in variety of drinks, and quality of food. Their portions are absolutely huge, and you get beyond your money's worth. We came expecting snack-sized portions and took food home from the abundance of a meal we received. The dough of the bao buns was fluffy and light, and I really enjoyed the egg, mushroom, and cabbage mixture in the veggie bao bun, especially with the sauce provided. The eggplant was incredible, and the soft boiled, cold egg was a super yummy touch to the bowl. My partner couldn't figure out what the saucy of the saucy pork bun was, but said it was savory and very good. The food was ready quickly, and the place was pretty empty, so it was nice to sit and eat without much background noise. We are excited to come back to try the wide variety of tea they offer, all of the drinks and smoothies look delicious, and many are made with real ice cream :)

Dah Bao is a nice little restaurant to pick up some steamed buns, milk tea, or a little meal. At Dah Bao you can get Asian steamed buns that are either filled with veggies or filled with pork. It's a very traditional item that surprisingly isn't offered at too many places. So Dah Bao is unique in that you can pick them up here. The buns are well made and remind me of the kind I had growing up. If you're a little hungrier, you can get a rice plate or noodles. I found the noodle dishes to be a little off for me in that the beef noodle soup tended to be a bit blander than I'm used to, and the zhajiang noodles weren't very spicy. The rice plates on the other hand were much better in terms of my expectations. The eggplant in particular was well portioned and tasty. Snacks like popcorn chicken and onion pancakes are on the menu as a nice little appetizer or to go with a milk tea. Speaking of milk teas, the Dah Bao milk teas are well made and definitely on par with the other places around town.

We were both pretty hungry afterwards and weren't sure what places were open, or what we wanted to eat. We decided to drive around downtown Davis just to get a sense of what was open, and saw that Tasty Kitchen was bustling. We had never eaten there before, but as it was pretty much our only option besides fast food (which I did not want), we decided to try them out and have a good Thanksgiving dinner. I took a quick browse at their Yelp reviews before heading in, and the food looked pretty good, so I figured why not. Since we had come pretty much on a whim (I usually heavily research restaurants before trying new places), we weren't quite sure what to order, but I knew I wanted some carbs. We wanted to share a fried rice, so we chose the dried scallop and egg white fried rice. My husband was eyeing the beef stew lo mein, and I was eager to try the beef chow fun with black bean sauce. We were seated quickly and given hot tea to enjoy. It had been a cold day, so the tea was very welcome. We placed our order and then sat back to people watch while we waited. There were a few large groups dining in, but while watching the staff, they all worked efficiently, and food was constantly coming out of the kitchen. Delivery drivers and those who called in for takeout were also coming and going. We waited a while for our food, but it was also because everyone seemed to have ordered at the same time for the dinner rush (and we had come around 17:45 too). I guess everyone was feeling like an early Thanksgiving dinner. We were honestly amazed by the huge portion sizes when our dishes arrived to our table. Everything was reasonably priced as well, and we knew we would have plenty of leftovers. The beef chow fun with black bean sauce was delightfully saucy, and the noodles still had a nice wok hay. The beef was extremely velvety and tender. My husband enjoyed his beef stew lo mein. The egg noodles were perfectly bouncy, and the braised beef was tender. The dried scallop egg white fried rice was pretty good as well. I had hoped for a bit more wok hay and scallop flavor, but it was a little under seasoned. I would say it was a nice palette cleanser if you will, and at least the rice was nice and fluffy. I would have to say that the food here is comforting and hearty, but it didn't have as much depth of flavor as I would have liked. However, you really get your money's worth when you come here. It was $49 for everything before tip, and we had so many leftovers to take home. Our waiter even took our plates and packaged them to go for us, so that was a nice touch. I'm used to packaging my own leftovers these days. There's something for everyone at this restaurant, and I would like to be back to try some of their other dishes. Another table across from us ordered the Mongolian beef, which came on a sizzling platter, and that smelled so good. That will definitely be a contender next time we visit. I'm definitely thankful that Tasty Kitchen was open on Thanksgiving, and will keep this restaurant in our rotation for a holiday meal.

Wow! Ascended to my #1 restaurant spot in Davis. Definitely more of an infrequent meal since I…read morewould consider it more on the expensive side. Average dishes are ~20 dollars. Great spicy food and friendly staff. Food (10/10) - The food here is AMAZING! Perfect balance of spice to flavor and every single bite is electric. The sichuan numbing pepper in the Chongqing soup was DELICIOUS. Mix it with some of the white rice and you have a dish all by iteself. The chicken itself had a nice chew and was very fragrant. Loved the texture and flaovr of the vermicelli; nice bounce to the noodles while soaking in all the spicy soup. My one complaint would be that they have soft bones (sign of long boiling time) so be careful of that! Also got the spicy stir-fried pork kidney... don't diss it 'til you try it. Super good, with that nice bit of chew. Take a bite of pepper, kidney, and white rice and BOOM! Perfect bite. **Recommendation: Rice is a key component for the dishes here. Without rice, everything will be too spicy, too savory, and overall too overwhelming. The rice is the thing that helps tie everything together (as it frequently is) Service (8/10) - Good service; nothing notable. Nice people and I think most of them speak Mandarin. Service and seating was also fast. Order of things to come out of the kitchen was a bit strange: soup for the chicken, rice, stir-fry, chicken. Honestly, not that big of a problem but just decided to comment. Price (8/10) - The price here is a bit on the pricier side; $54 for 2 but there were some leftovers (had to make my own rice though). Some of the dishes are more worth than others. The Chonqing chicken was $25 but you got a large bowl of chicken with soup and vermicelli. On the other hand, the stir-fry for $20 was notably padded with vegetables and I would say a majority of the dish was not the kidney. At the very least, the taste of the food compensates. However, this place is likely not a college go-to. Overall, great restaurant that I will be coming back to again (maybe with my parents LOL) or at the very least, would come with a large group as it is more fitting for family style. Highly recommend!

Ordered few items, food came out very fast and the tastes are not bad at all. Beef Fried Rice Noodles: How do you differentiate if this dish is good or not, it is about how much excessive oil that's left on the plate. The stir fried was good, not too greasy, and they marinate the meat well. Unlike other Chinese restaurants, this place's meat was good. Only they could stir fried with even higher eat to create more "wok air" Sticky Rice Stick with Brown Sugar: First time trying this dish, so not sure what to expect. But it does seem to be a dessert to me, my comment would be higher if the rice stick is more chewy. Hot & Sour Shredded Potato: This is common dish from northern part of China. The way they prepared was awesome. The potato was not starchy and the seasoning is just right. A bit greasy but this is actually my favorite dish! Shrimp and Pork with Chives Dumplings: Meat is fresh and dumpling wrap is great too. Each dumpling size is not too big and wasn't torn. Taste is okay but maybe try another filling if I visit again. After looking at the menu, I opted to get some traditional soup dumplings, bbq pork fried rice, and pineapple bao buns for dessert. My server was Bing and she was nice and efficient. She came back to check on me a few times throughout my dining experience. My fried rice came out first. It was a LARGE serving of fried rice, it of course had eggs, carrots, peas, and BBQ pork. It was flavorful. Next came out the soup dumplings. They were brought out in a steamer basket with a top to keep them warm. These were amazing. The light and delicate dough, mixed with the savory pork filling, and the salty broth was perfection. Next came out my pineapple bao buns. To be honest, I wasn't sure how I was going to like them. To my surprise these may have been the star of the show. The dough was light and sweet, the top was carmelized and sweet, and the custard inside reminded me of a Dole Whip from disney (exept it wasn't cold, it was warm). These were pretty large and I'm semi embarrassed to admint I had 2 3/4 bao buns myself. Go here. It's delicious.

Ambiance and service are good, but not great. The dishes we tried were: - I12 Dan dan noodles: 5/5 super tasty and flavorful, but quite spicy - G2 Sautéed green beans: 5/5 simple but soooooo good! - D1 Griddle cooked fragnant cabbages and pork: 5/5 again pretty simple, but very tasty and well cooked! - E7 Hunan style sauteed beef: 5/5 excellent, so tender and juicy and well seasoned. - I3 Farmhouse stir fried pork with rice noodles: 4/5 very tasty, but the texture of the rice noodles were a bit too slippery for my taste. - E16 Ma Po Tofu: 4/5 the sauce was amazing, but the tofu texture was a bit too soft and strange for me. - G4 Shaoshan stir fried shredded potatoes: 3/5 I didn't have a problem with this, but didn't particularly enjoy them either. Not something to go for again. The potatoes are kind of half way cooked. - C1 Laotan boiled fish with pickled cabbage: 1/5 the fish itself was tasty, but the soup itself was super salty like drinking ocean water! I didn't like the taste of pickles in the soup either.

New favorite restaurant, if ur Chinese this has all of the childhood restaurant favorites. All…read moregreat prices for the portions. We had the seafood tofu hotpot, shrimp wonton, garlic green bean, mongolian beef, half hainan chicken, and ny steak spaghetti to-go. Was a little busy at 7 on a holiday so we waited like ten minutes to get our order in, the guy memorized our order right as I said it lol. He confirmed and we got our soup in ten mins, ten mins for green beans and mongolian beef, another ten minutes for our chicken, then like seven for hotpot. Most disappointing was chicken, it's not hainan at all and just standard hong kong white chicken. Taste is fine and fresh but was sad. Best was the seafood hotpot AND the wonton soup. Both had great flavor and saltiness and was just sooo good. Wontons were very tasty and had a lot of meat, definitely both pork and shrimp, and soup even had little shrimp in it ifkyk. The seafood hotpot had great variety and flavor, my parents were pleased with the fish bits in it, the tofu was yummy bc it's fried tofu, the crab texture was not great maybe overcooked and I didn't like the soft cucumber but otherwise the broccoli scallop shrimp tofu fish bok choy was all great. Green beans and mongolian beef SERIOUSLY needed some wok flavor and wish the beef had black pepper because the seasoning was a bit lacking (wok flavor would be great here) and overall the vegetables were a little undercooked. They were addictive though I definitely kept going back for more. Hot tea is jasmine tea. Service was a bit lackluster but totally understandable and even though I was in a rush we were in and out by an hour and like ten minutes which worked. Ambiance wise, I didn't like how the lights are half brighter and whiter than the sun and half nicely softly lit. Tables are nice wood and a bit sticky but okay. There's random Chinese TV on the walls, very traditional lol and I think no music. Overall very pleased! Will definitely come back as much as possible to support, and highly highly recommend. I went harsh on Tim's because I was expecting perfect dishes, and even though some stuff didn't hit, everything was way beyond average.

I love the hainan chicken rice, it's my go to when I come here. The meal comes with pickled veggies which I love bc most places just have steamed veggies. The ginger scallion sauce is amazing too. If I lived in Davis I'd come more often!
