Amazing variety of traditional Chinese dishes that you don't easily find elsewhere. We shared a couple of dishes and some were really flavorful and exceptional. Ambiance and service are good, but not great. The dishes we tried were: - I12 Dan dan noodles: 5/5 super tasty and flavorful, but quite spicy - G2 Sautéed green beans: 5/5 simple but soooooo good! - D1 Griddle cooked fragnant cabbages and pork: 5/5 again pretty simple, but very tasty and well cooked! - E7 Hunan style sauteed beef: 5/5 excellent, so tender and juicy and well seasoned. - I3 Farmhouse stir fried pork with rice noodles: 4/5 very tasty, but the texture of the rice noodles were a bit too slippery for my taste. - E16 Ma Po Tofu: 4/5 the sauce was amazing, but the tofu texture was a bit too soft and strange for me. - G4 Shaoshan stir fried shredded potatoes: 3/5 I didn't have a problem with this, but didn't particularly enjoy them either. Not something to go for again. The potatoes are kind of half way cooked. - C1 Laotan boiled fish with pickled cabbage: 1/5 the fish itself was tasty, but the soup itself was super salty like drinking ocean water! My friend and I stopped in here one weeknight for dinner and the guy at the front desk was so friendly and helpful. From the moment we arrived I explained we hadn't ever been here and we were hoping to get some recommendations. He recommended so many great things and we ordered all that he suggested! Food came out quick and was SO fresh and delicious!! We ordered the egg plant and green beans, spicy fried chicken (amazing & great spice) and the shrimp chow maine noodles! I'd get the noodles again, but didn't love the pork. Pork was a bit too fatty for me and didn't seem to have a ton of flavor. Noodles were really good though. I was in Davis and got hungry and looked for a restaurant I've never tried before. Found Hunan Style. Never heard or read about this place so coming in blind. Ordered the Hunan style sautéed beef and the Hunan style fried noodles with shrimp. First with the noodles, there is nothing special about it. It's like any chow mein I've had before. I do like the smoky flavor from the wok. My favorite is the sautéed beef. It was tender and flavorful and spicy. I think I requested medium spicy and it's okay for me. Had leftover that I brought home and my sister liked it too. Ordered takeout of Hunan spicy chicken and this one I do not recommend. I feel like there is not a lot of chicken in proportion to the dried chilies. Plus there were bones and the way it was coated one may think it's all chicken but when you bite into it you may crack a tooth. Service was good and the person who helped me made recommendations what to try when I mentioned I am coming back. Next time I will try the beef fried rice and the scrambled eggs and tomatoes. Other recommendations were organic chicken in spicy oil, sautéed pork enoki mushroom fungus and egg, country style dried bean curd with pork, sautéed eggplant with string beans, and sautéed baby bok choy pot. If you like spicy food, you must go here! Always parking available which is helpful. A lot of people, so the service was a little slow. Great authentic Hunan style in Sacramento area. Really enjoy the large gallon size of water container at the table you get because you will feel the spice at some point. I recommend getting the eggplant with green beans ($14.95) since it very fresh, cooked nicely, not spicy at all. The spicy flounder fish ($24.95) is indeed SPICY, will numb your mouth but does go away, the sauce does contain a lot of veggie options such as bean sprouts, wood ear mushroom, king oysters which is worth it for portion size and ingredients in the meal. Very spicy! Since it is pretty authentic Hunan cuisine, expect all their best dishes to be hot and numbing. Hunan spicy chicken: B+ Quite tasty, usually one of the popular human dishes here amongst the American palate. Tiny bites of chicken that aren't too spicy unless you also eat the peppers straight up. Boiled fish with chili: A- I always recommend this dish to people who haven't tried legit Hunan food before. Hunan style beef: B+ Tender beef, lots of cilantro. Really good over rice but was a bit spicy for me to handle. Griddle cooked chicken w/ Mexican peppers: B I think the Mexican peppers were jalapeno. This dish and some other chicken dishes have small bones attached which is common in China, I'm not quite a fan of the extra work it takes to eat and spit them out. read more

Friendly service, good food. This place is one of the two Hunan style Chinese food restaurants on campus, so it's quite popular, especially among Chinese students. The interior is bare minimum, tables and chairs, not much wall decor, so the food is the focus. The menu has a lot of authentic Hunan dishes. Hunan is a province in China that a little of their food is spicy, oily and heavy on taste. But you can ask them to be less oil and less salt. We ordered beef fried rice, pan fried egg with tomato soup, pork slices with mushrooms stir-fry, Mao's pork knuckles, and garlic bean sprouts. The fried rice has dark soy sauce but it's not spicy at all. The soup is very generous in portions and it has a huge piece of pan fried egg and some chopped tomatoes. The Mao's pork knuckles is good! Very soft and flavorful. The pork slices with mushrooms is a bit spicy although it's not visible. I was the least impressed with this dish. Service is good. We arrived ahead of our friend's schedule and they didn't rush us to make orders. Food also came out fast. It was super quiet in the restaurant dining room since it was a holiday week but they were doing a brisk take out business. We had the Szechuan dry chicken and the beef noodles. This restaurant came recommended by locals and we're certainly glad that we stopped in! We were walking in downtown Davis, so it was just a few blocks to the restaurant. However, I noticed there was plenty of parking in the center where the restaurant is located. The exterior of the restaurant was not well lit that evening, so we almost thought it was closed. As we got closer, we saw the spacious and clean dining room. The server was friendly, but also quite busy since it looked like she was covering the entire dining room that evening. The main reason for the 5 star rating was the flavor of their food. We had the spicy beef noodles, dan dan noodles and smoked pork fried rice. Simple dishes but the flavor was better than most of the Chinese restaurants we have ever tried. The dan dan noodles were a standout (loved the peppercorn flavor) and the best I've ever had - including those we had while on vacation to China. Discriminatory and Rude! If I could give this place zero stars, I would. I tried to walk in with my fully trained service dog, and the moment the waitress saw us, she immediately said, "No dogs allowed." I politely explained that my dog is a service animal, which is legally allowed under the ADA, but she just shook her head as if she didn't care and dismissed me completely. Excuse me?! You don't believe in following the law? Not only was this experience humiliating, but it was also completely illegal. If you don't want a lawsuit, maybe train your staff on basic ADA regulations before you deny someone their rights. Very delicious Hunan food. My favorite dishes are the chicken gizzards and cauliflower. I wrapped the gizzard dish and would enjoy it with some noodle or rice noodle. This price will give me roughly four or five decent noodle. The cauliflower is so aromatic and with the right Guoqi (a hint of burnt smell from the extreme high heat flames) . The cured ham is also quite good. The rest of the dishes are well executed and the fried rice must be so good that my little one have three bowls. Large portion very attentive services. This may be the first time I've had Hunan Style Chinese food. I understand it is known to be spicier than other regions. We had the Hunan Style Sautéed Beef, Cold Dressed Cucumber and the Hot and Sour Soup. We enjoyed the first two (the beef was indeed very spicy). I was totally blown away by the amount of flavor packed in the food! It brought me back to my memories living in China and eating really really good food. We came here pretty often and my favorite dishes is chicken gizzard with pickle green beans but I didn't take a photo here . The most recent time we visitted that place, we ordered a stir-fried egglant with green beans and boiled fish in chilli oil. The vegetables are still crunchy whole cooked and the flavor is super tasty. We also like the boiled fish. The portion is big and it has lots of fish in the dish. I tried many Chinese restaurants around Davis and this place is pretty nice in terms of food. The service is nice but the second time we came here it was very crowded so we had been waiting for so long to be served. However it is understandable for new business.
