I absolutely love this restaurant!! As a fan of both Chinese and Japanese cuisine, this restaurant is definitely on the top of my list. Not only is the food fresh, the service is fast and the restaurant is immaculate. Not only is there sushi delicious, it is the only restaurant around where I have been introduced to the pokè bowl! A generous portion of your choice of protein with a wide selection of toppings to be added, you can get it over rice or salad. Unfortunately a restaurant isn't judged on food alone or it would be another star higher. I arrived today and while pretty warm outside (80's), the front doors were open and no AC was on. It is a nice day out, but I don't like smelling vehicle exhaust and hearing loud trucks while I eat my lunch. The bathroom is clean and well stocked. On to the food....so I ordered the Shrimp and cucumber roll as my appetizer and the lunch special of chicken drunken noodles. The roll was very tasty, they added a lot of sesame seeds (ironically I shouldn't be having those due to a medical condition and forgot to mention). Presentation and flavor was good. I also got egg drop soup with the main course, it was given before the noodles and sushi (as it should be) and was hot and a good portion. They had mixed corn in it for some reason, but that seemed to sweeten it up and it tasted good, once I added a little pepper and salt to taste. The drunken noodles were flavored well, with a mix of bean sprouts, peppers, basil, egg, chicken, onions, and green onion. All ingredients seemed fresh and tasty. The owner asked when i was done if everything was ok and I said it was very good, but she said "why you have so much food left on your plate"? I explained that I avoid lots of noodles (low carb) but love the drunken flavor. She said, "no problem, next time you're here ask for it with less noodle and more veggies, or more chicken and less noodles". PERFECT customer service in my mind! I will be back! Please don't expect a fancy sit down meal you can take lots of business associates, but it is clean and tasty with a great value for your dollar. The drunken noodles were only $6.50 and are normally $10 or more elsewhere for similar flavor, ingredients and portion. As others say, lunch specials are a great value! read more

DO NOT ORDER FROM THIS PLACE. It is unhygienic. I found hair in my soup. Missing part of the order and bad odor. When I called to complain, the rude lady speaking broken English proceeds to yell on the phone. I had many of my friends complain about this place, now I know why. My husband and I ate at the restaurant a few months ago and really liked the sushi. The dumplings I wasn't crazy about. The batter around the dumplings was really thick and doughy, even when they were steamed. But otherwise, the food was good, but not outstanding by any means. A few months after, we had a few friends over for dinner and decided to order delivery. The girl they had on the phone was HORRIBLE. I wasn't sure if she had trouble understanding English or if she was having trouble locating the buttons on the screen to place our order - or both. Whatever the problem was, she finally got our order correct after a 15 minute conversation. Then the cherry on top was that our food was delivered an hour and a half late. We live down the road from this place, so we would have picked up the food if we'd known it was going to take that long! After three phone calls the driver FINALLY shows up. Since they made us wait so long, we made him wait while we checked our order (which, thankfully, was correct) and checked the receipt. They did not charge my friend's card nor did they give us the 20% grand opening discount. After the driver left my friend was, fortunately, able to call and speak to a manager and the manager straightened everything out. At that point we find out that the girl taking our order was a new employee still in training. Seriously? NEVER EVER have a new employee who is still unsure of what she's doing on the phones on a busy Saturday night! I promptly threw their menu in the trash. I'm ordering from Tengda from now on. And that's a shame because Open Rice is so close and I really like to give smaller local businesses my money. The least they could have done was offered to discount our meal further, or comp it altogether. read more

I love this place! I have only ordered take out off the lunch menu because dinner prices seem a little expensive, but the food is delicious. I always order the chicken with garlic sauce, with fried rice and wonton soup, my sister gets sweet and sour chicken and egg drop soup. I have also tried the szechuan chicken and mongolian beef, but the garlic chicken is my favorite. The fried pork dumplings are also great.Their fried rice only has pork, carrots, and peas in it which I enjoy because I hate bean sprouts and onions. I have also tried the boneless ribs and they had a faint peanut-y taste which I wasn't crazy about. One negative is that when you pick up the order they only give you one packet of soy sauce for each meal so you have to remember to ask for more. Also they charge for extra bags of crispy noodles for the soup. I don't mind paying for them, but I often forget to ask when ordering. read more

Generally 'Chinese take-out' suffices in stopping the hunger pangs. While I would not classify Open Rice as 'Chinese take-out", they do offer similar meals. I'd say I've been here 12 times, and only once, there was a 'so-so' meal. I brought it back to them the next day and no problem. I decided to sit down and have lunch and was not charged. Ordered the Shrimp & Lobster sauce and a couple of spring rolls for my wife. While she said the dish tasted ok there was a distinct odor or fishiness to the dish. The lobster sauce had no ground pork and was water thin. I visited a few months earlier, when they first opened, and recall the same fishy smell associated with the Shrimp & Lobster sauce and the General Tso's chicken was cloyingly sweet. We've ordered the dish numerous times in many different restaurants and the LINGERING ODOR OF FISH IS INEXCUSABLE, OCCURING EVEN ONCE, LET ALONE TWO TIMES. If it wasn't 10 degrees outside I'd have opened the windows. I made the mistake of going back a second time....needless to say I won't be going back again. They certainly know how to charge for their dishes ($14 for 6 shrimp in the dish) but not how to prepare them. read more

Had a delivery last night of their sushi picking 5 different special rolls. People--the rolls are a go. Speed of delivery was great for a darkly lit house in N. Stam.Simple transaction on the phone for Open Rice and the expired coupon was honored! Maybe they've worked the kinks out thus far. They deserve another go-around to continue sampling other dishes. Open Rice is my last resort when it comes to Chinese/Japanese takeout. It's a shame how little attention is paid to the most minimal details like flavor and accuracy. More than once I have been subject to food tainted with fish (I have an allergy), food that is barely flavored, orders that were inaccurate with items left out, and waiting for delivery for over an hour. I've tried and tried again to give Open Rice a chance but there are better options out there. If you absolutely must order from here I would say that their sushi is always a safe bet. The vegetable tempura is delicious as well and veggie tofu soup and general tso's tofu is decent as well. If you keep your expectations low you won't be too upset when your food is overly greasy or completely bland. read more

We used to eat regularly here, even though our experience was the same as many other reviewers about a bad attitude from the older woman who works the phones and cash register. I'd heard one customer come in and complain about the quality of the food, and I let it go because I was chuckling at the woman cursing at him and yelling that all the fish is fresh. That changed when our two year had a sweet-potato roll from the restaurant and ended up with serious food poisoning. We've written the place off since then. read more

Best Chinese in Stamford! Did not try the Japanese/Sushi as we are loyal to Kiku but they do offer both. Chicken was white meat only and no MSG used. Beef in the fried rice was good quality... All sauces were great as well. Stamford has the worst Chinese restaurants but I would say this one is the best and comparable to Chings table in New Canaan and wild ginger in Darien. read more

I have never written a review before, but I feel that if this can prevent one person from the experiences I have had as of late, I will have done a good thing. If asked late last year to write a review, I would have given at least 3 and 1/2 to 4 stars. The two young girls who worked on the weekend were pleasant and helpful (unlike the woman who usually answers the phone!). They had a delivery girl who was not only fast, my wife and I were very pleased whenever she brought our food. She was engaging and friendly - she even remembered our dogs name! Fast forward to Christmastime. Suddenly this place began falling apart. There were a bunch of new people behind the counter when we would pick up our order. There was a young girl with glasses and a young man who seemed to run around a lot and accomplish nothing. Certainly neither had ever been in the business of customer service! I watched a woman begin to order food from the girl with the glasses and in the middle of ordering, the girl turned away and started checking out a different customer who had just walked in - and in front of me!! The first customer walked right out, seemingly unnoticed. Thankfully the delivery woman saw this and ran out to try and appease the woman. She even offered to pay for some of her food out of her own pocket. I know all of this, because I walked out also. We decided not to give up, because it was explained that those kids were new and simply training (they needed it!)_and that they wouldn't be there much longer. And things did resume back to the way they had been for a short time. Now we are all under quarantine and I realize people are busy and stressed and we all need to have patience. That being said, this place has completely lost any hope of keeping my business. The regular woman is just horrible to deal with. Short tempered. Takes care of people in whatever order she wants, and most importantly, the food seems like it is made by different people every time. Absolutely awful. Get it together, Open Rice. As a regular at Open rice, I was very intrigued when I saw a new offering of Poke bowls and sushi burritos. Tried both and was amazed at how fresh they were. There's nothing else like it in Stamford and the poke bowls were comparable to Pokemoto in Norwalk. Drive no further, this is the spot to go! On our way back from Philly, we stopped in here for a quick dinner. No regrets! Their roti canai was awesome. Even my mister liked it and he's not so into curry. He even begged for a little more! Unheard of. He got the steak hibachi, which looked perfectly cooked, but I thought it was weird to offer hibachi and not have anyone come out and cook it in from of you. I got something called triple delight, and it was in another curry, but this one slightly spicy. Huge portion! Lunch specials are excellent. I get the sesame chicken and it's fantastic. They don't put too much sauce on their chicken and it's nice and crispy. Not too sweet either. Just moved to Stamford and was afraid that I wouldn't find good restaurants. I was wrong! {Is a great Japanese restaurant with tons of options as far sushi and fresh hibachi items. We ordered takeout and when got we got home everything was hot and delicious even down to this egg rolls. This will be my go to restaurant for takeout from now on.
