After reading all of the great reviews, I stopped in this afternoon to try a flight of Mead. I am not much of a drinker but I have been told that I would love Mead because it is so sweet. The few times I have tried it, I enjoyed it, so I wanted to explore that. When you arrive, you will see a sign directing you to the rear of the building. There is plenty of parking. The meadery is well decorated and welcoming. They have large tables and small ones and a more cozy couch type seating area with a fireplace. They had lots of table games on offer and signs for D&D (another thing I know nothing about but my son loves). I really enjoyed the music they were playing and the ambiance was lovely. The flight is $12 before tip end you get six different needs to taste. Currently they are: Traditional, Cherry, Blackberry, Blueberry, Bearskal and Dragon's Blood. I enjoyed the traditional mead but it was much less sweet than any I had tried before, which makes sense as it was listed at a sweetness of 3 out of 10. The other samples were earthy and tart and tasted like fruit wines I have tried but again much less sweet.The highest sweetness on the flight was 6/10 but that seemed high to me based on what I experienced. I actually found the 3/10 original to be sweeter than any of the others. I am sure, especially based on the reviews here, that to alcohol connoisseurs they are delicious, but as I said, I have a novice palate and they were just not for me. When I returned the flight and went to pay, the young lady working asked me if I liked them and I answered honestly. She explained to me based on what I was saying that I would enjoy much sweeter, more honey based meads and gave me a taste of a peach mead they were almost out of. I quite liked it. She also said it sounded like I would prefer meads on tap as opposed to bottled and now I have a much better idea of what to look for in the future. I had a nice time here and appreciate the opportunity to experience the different meads and learn in a friendly environment. I would gladly come back again, especially when they have some sweeter meads on tap :) read more

My sister and her husband went with me to check out this meadery. We were the first person coming in and the owner greeted us with a friendly smile and was extremely helpful. He suggested one or two of the meads that we would like and got a couple of glasses to drink while chatting. The place is so spacious but a little on the cold side. I'm sure when there are more people it warms up quite a bit since it's a warehouse like location. They have games you can play with your group and since they do not really sell food besides a few bags of chips you can bring your own food to eat as long as you clean up after yourselves. Had a lovely weekday experience here, Jon the Meader was great and very enthusiastic about mead and we were excited to be there! It was a quiet Thursday afternoon, it did get busy closer towards afterwork hours but we got a flight and enjoyed the Blackberry and Odinsdagr a lot. The decor is really great here too. Best mead on the planet! The owner is a meticulous practitioner of his craft, and it shows. He uses the highest quality ingredients he can source, most from right here in our beloved region. The delicious blends are sweet and silky smooth. Try the hopped mead, or the eminently drinkable Blood Axe. The tasting room is delightfully decorated like a viking hall, with heavy wooden tables and board games galore. The owner of Oppegard is an honorable, hard-working man who I would trust with my life. He has been attacked here in a one-star review for having the audacity to stand up for women on social media, and then blocking someone for being offensive. So if you see the one star review, ignore it; it was posted by someone with a ludicrous axe to grind. Patronize this marvelous local treasure, and try all the meads. I'm super happy to have found this place!! Mead usually isn't on my radar - it's pretty hard to find and can be pretty pricey. BUT a few weeks ago I overheard a customer in the grocery store asking if they had mead (they didn't) so that got me thinking.... Turns out there's a meadery basically in my backyard. Wow, I've been missing out!! I had put them on my "to-do list," but when I learned they had a sale of 3+ bottles through the end of the year it became a do-it-now list. Located in a business office, it's super easy to get to from Southcenter and they have a tasting room that will be great when things go back to normal. Along with the mead, they have an eclectic section of various art products for sale, most (all?) of which are actually made by the employees! Definitely one of those times that I find myself really wanting something, but not 100% sure where I'd put it. Excellent customer service! I knew I wanted the limited edition Elderberry, but what else? I asked about their signature products and was told that semi-sweet is going to be the closest thing they have at that moment, but "dragon's blood" should be in stock around March (now that sounds like their signature mead!). I opted for the semi, elderberry, and barrel aged. The price was as I expected to be; more than I want to pay on a regular basis, but it's fun to get it here and there as a treat! All three meads were really awesome and I'm definitely looking forward to trying other offerings. I'm especially looking for the tasting room to open back up. Apparently they don't serve food, but you can bring takeout in. SOLD! Let's be real: I'm going to go back in for another bottle or 2 (or 3 or 4??) before restrictions open up again, but I'm still definitely looking forward to trying their products right from the tap. I didn't know that I liked mead. I only knew that I and hindsight drank cheap mead which makes a difference. The first thing that you notice walking into this establishment is the layout. It's like walking into a great hall with plenty of wood and fur accents, and it's also decorated with colorful paintings and some really cool ones with runes. It looks like it's definitely a tabletop gamer's paradise as well. I liked how spacious it was yet we were able to fit over 30 people easily. The owner John was very talkative and knowledgeable, So as the party was warming up we asked him questions about me and he answered them extensively. John, let us try a bunch of different samples and I'm going to have to recommend the dragon's blood for sure, what she says is not only his best seller but most dangerous for its high alcohol content. I didn't even know this meadery existed until Steve and I went to a meadery in Tacoma and was referred to come to Oppegaard to try. A few weekends we did take up on the suggestion and paid a visit. The taproom is open for to go bottle and merchandise sales but alas the tasting room itself was closed still as a precaution of covid-19. Despite that we were greeted in a very friendly fashion not to mention a very informative one too! We decided to get a bottle of the Elderberry Mead and a shirt. We tried the mead a few days later and absolutely loved it! The mead was very well crafted and flavorful. Definitely a far cry from bland! I'll need to try other meads from this business in the future. I'm quite sure whatever I may by I will immensely enjoy it. read more

Such a great place to go to try some mead! The owner walked us through all the meads and spent a while teaching us what we were drinking. He is super friendly and the mead was so good. We sampled everything and left with a few bottles, and now we are apart of his mead membership to get 2 bottles per quarter. Highly recommend, it's a great place for a date! read more

They have excellent mead, which I guess is the biggest thing. They do a variety of styles and flavor profiles and limited edition. They also sell cute crochet things that benefit local causes and some nerd odds and ends. Overall very happy with the good and service even during Covid. read more

The meadtender was VERY friendly and super accomodating. The mead flavors were quite tasty (my first experience with mead was at a Ren Fair in SoCal - not so yummy). The owner came out and showed his love for his product and the science behind the mead making process. It was quite infectious! He is friendly, knowledgeable, and has a great sense of humor! His mead is top notch, and is always a great person to interact with. I've been here many times now, having a glass or two of mead in their tasting room, picking up bottles as part of their mead club, and recently was able to host a private event in their recently expanded mead hall. There are gorgeous custom made live edge tables, lots of board games, fun art and various Viking related stuff. There are now two other very small meaderies in the area and the owner is showcasing their mead as well. He has also been very diligent about Covid protocols to ensure he's taking care of his staff and customers. Anyone can get takeout with a mask on but you must show proof of vaccination to stay and hang in the mead hall. And obviously the mead is delicious! read more

We went to an event at the meadery, a Cheese and Mead tasting. This was so much fun. The owner and staff are great, attentive, kind and funny. The mead & cheese pairings were really tasty. And the ladies doing the discussion on the cheeses were unite knowledgeable. Fun atmosphere and caring ambiance. I had reached out early in the day to ask if I needed to avoid anything on the pairings to avoid a severe allergy. Before catching our flight at Sea-Tac, we sampled some of the stock from this father and son company. Their slogan is, "Viking Mead with a Modern Twist." The son was the one serving us. He was very friendly and knowledgeable, telling us about the completely locally sourced ingredients like the blueberries being picked in Puyallup and blackberries from Camano Island. We had the traditional sweet mead, the blueberry, and the blackberry. Their meads are absolutely delicious, and easily beat your standard Chaucer's (essentially the one mead most people have tried since it's often the ONLY brand stores carry, you know, if they have mead at all.) I definitely recommend giving them a try. read more

Where to start? I've been going into Oppegaard Meadery for a couple years now. I honestly can't even remember how I found the spot. Firstly, I've literally only found one other mead, from just south of the tundra; which I would say is even close to the Oppegaard Mead. I would have to immediately follow that up with, these folks usually have a new unique limited release flavor every couple months or so; sometimes more. When I say unique, I mean like Taco Meat, Blueberry French Toast etc. They will absolutely tantalize all of your senses. This mead is made from all organic fruits and a LOT! of locally produced ("organic" as it gets) honey. Some of the meads are also made in well aged, assorted rare barrels. More satisfying than the mead, is the experience of being there itself. There is a small bar for free daily mead tasting and growler fills, and there is also a really nice hand-made unique table that really stands out. The entire place is adorn in Viking/Norse themed decorations, many of which are hand made gifts received from grateful patrons. There are a bunch of really cool hand made arts and crafts available for sale, go great with a bottle of mead. If I happen to stumble in there when its slow, whoever is on staff usually stops what they're doing to pretty much just hang out with me. It's kind of like therapy. Most of the time however, there are already festivities of some sort occurring. I've always been a little socially awkward and find it strange trying to fit in to any scene really, but all the folks who regularly come here and the staff have always been so kind and welcoming. Don't let the big bearded men, the motorcycles, the weapons on the walls intimidate you. These are some of the silliest fun, genuinely nice and caring people I've ever had the pleasure to be around. I don't really enjoy going out much any more, really because I don't have the patience for folks who don't know how to act. But I absolutely look forward to coming to Oppegaard Meadery and always leave so refreshed.
