Legit! I drove from Las Cruces for my 22nd Anniversary dinner with my wife and could not be happier. Ever since Gunther's in El Paso closed, I have been waiting for decent German food in our area. Oppenheimer Gasthaus has made my dreams come true. My wife had the jaagerschnitzel and I had the Bavarian schnitzel. Both of them were were so dang good and the sauerkraut on the side was some of best sauerkraut I've ever had. My great grandmother made the best sauerkraut in the world but these guys came so close to hers. I'll be making that drive again for sure. Heck, I'd willing to drive all day just to go get some schnitzel and and beer from this place. Oh, and I can't forget to add the homemade pretzel in the review. Get the side of beer cheese with the pretzel and your taste buds will be dancing with joy. And on top of deliciousness, the prices are not bad at all. 10 stars plus one. read more

Good food, great service, but horrible business practices... First, what you can expect. Of course this place being the only German restaurant/pub for tens of miles, is busy. Also given that the food is pretty good, super busy. But... the tables all seat 6. So expect to share your table with some strangers. Second, they have service where you turn on a light at the edge of the table to be served. It seems simple at first, but then it takes a bit to get used to... every time you want to fill a drink or get napkins, or even order, you'd better turn that light on, or it's a "no go". However, I like the overall idea... as it's pretty annoying to have a waitperson constantly hovering over your table and asking you questions when you have food in your mouth. It's nice to have good service, but at the same time....it's annoying. So, it's actually a good practice, I think,... just takes some getting used to. We got there as soon as they opened. I mean, like before they opened. We were the first customers. They don't have iced tea on the menu, but I noticed on Facebook they said they had missed that, but that they do have iced tea. Trying to order tea, they only had sweet tea and peach tea. No normal, non-sweetened tea. Not a deal breaker, but we don't do sugar, so our only option was water. I had ordered the schniztel, which came with spatzle. Plain spatzle. They also have cheese (and bacon) spatzle as a seperate side order (does not come with the meal). So I simply asked, not for a change of order, but for cheese and bacon to be added to the spatzle that I had. If I had to pay an extra cost, that wouldn't be an issue, just add a couple of bucks for the cheese and bacon,... right? No. Not allowed. Ok. I figured that it was because they barely opened earlier this month, and the house wanted to get rolling more smoothly before putting the wait staff and others through the grinder, having to change or add to orders whilst dealing with a busy house. I get it. So I ordered the separate side order of "cheese spatzle". Husband order the same. Two orders. But then we get our food, and wait,... no spatzle. Ok,..oops,.. it'll come,... eventually. It comes,.. halfway through my meal - I had stopped eating so that I could have it "with", so it had been about 15 mins later. But wait, we had ordered 2... we only got one. They were out of bacon. Ok, take it off our bill. No big deal. So, the food was good,... a couple of setbacks... maybe... hopefully,... only temporary ones...(?)... I was all set to give this place 5 stars.... but....then... Halfway though my meal, I asked for a side of mustard. MUSTARD!!. Ok, maybe they make it in house. So what... it's freaking MUSTARD!! Nope. Mustard is not included with this item on the menu, therefore, "No mustard for you!!" (If you know the reference of this statement... have a good laugh, I'd rather not use the term used on Seinfeld due to it being a German restaurant and all... but you get it ;) ). The first "add on/change" was excusable, the lack of regular tea was excusable, the late spatzle was excusable.... but... wait... even the lack of bacon was excusable.... but the "mustard n---" bit was ridiculous. Never ever... in my life... have I been denied.... mustard... or ANY simple condiment... it was crazy. I would like to say we'll be back... sometime... let them iron things out... I mean, we live 60 miles away... so it's a stretch... but... It's a hard sale going back to a place that won't even give you mustard fcs. Overall impression: The food was really good. The shnitzel was tender, and had a light crispy breading. The sauerkraut was tangy and sour, and "fresh" tasting. The spatzle was good, not too chewy or mushy. Husband liked the bratwurst, ok. Easily the best German food we've ever had (California, El Paso, Phoenix) outside of Germany. The service was excellent. We had a very attentive, capable, friendly, likeable waitress. Felt bad for her though, as she was the only one waiting, and there should have been at least one other person. The kitchen practices... as far as food items available that are on the menu,.. just not on the particular meal chosen... is ridiculous. And for that I've taken them down to 4 stars from the 5 star rating they originally had, before the mustard fiasco. (Of note, my husband, who's been to Germany, and really liked the food there, gives this 3 stars for all of the issues - no regular iced tea, no changes or add-ons, late spatzle, no bacon=minus one spatzle, no mustard, large tables with the chance that we'd be eating with strangers). read more

Some of our podcast team went to Alamogordo and partook in some really great German food at a recently opened establishment in the center of town. Yes, real German food in a delightful setting with excellent service. Now we realize that Alamogordo is not convenient for most Burqueños [if you're not from New Mexico, you might have to look that one up], but most New Mexicans eventually find themselves going through "Alamo" [a local's alternative name for Alamogordo] and in search of an unusual and good place to eat. Try the Oppenheimer Gasthaus and see if you don't agree, this is the best German restaurant in our state. Who knew you could find great German cuisine in Almogordo, New Mexico? Everything here was on point, including the food and service. We started off with a liter of beer each and split the pretzel, which was amazing. After spending time in White Sands NP and Cloudcroft, we stopped at Oppenheimer Gasthaus for dinner. I had the Hungarian goulash served over spatzle and the other two in our group had an assortment of sides (cheesy spatzle, German potato salad, sauerkraut, and cucumber salad). Everything was great tasting. We also shared a giant pretzel. Very nice interior decorated with flags and banners. Service was excellent. read more

The waitress was amazing and humorous. She made sure we were comfortable and well informed. We came here for our honeymoon from Maryland and I cannot say how nice people are here. The communal tables are intimidating for introvert like my wife and I but our table mates were cordial and so so kind. The schnitzel was cooked to perfection and the draft beer was delightful. We have many German resturants near us and this was one of the better experiences I have had at one. Quite a nice gem to find here in New Mexico. We ordered Goulash and Spatzle, and Weisswurst with German Potato Salad and a pretzel. Also had the house draft beer-Hefe-Weissbier, which was delicious. The Weisswurst and Pretzel were excellent. The Goulash and Spatzle too! The German Potato Salad was a bit bland. Might try the red cabbage next time. European seating was different, but it was OK. If you're going to have a private dinner with a date, it might be a little uncomfortable. Service was good. It was a Saturday afternoon about 1:30 and they were still very busy which is a good sign. It reminded me very much of a café in Munich. We will go back again! read more

The German cuisine is authentic and very good. I recommend this restaurant but with the caveat that you go early in the weekend. We have dined here 5 times and by chance it was either on a Sunday or Monday. Each time several menu items were sold out. This applies to the beer selections as well. We have had really good meals every time, just not always what we would have ordered had it been available. This is a very nice place to go. read more

Went at lunch on Saturday. The restaurant was about 2/3 full. I heard the food was good, but the service was bad. That was very true! We had the cucumber salad which was very tasty. I had the Hungarian Snitzle (sp) with red cabbage and German potato salad. My friends had the Snitzle with mushrooms and they said it was great. Unfortunately the service was terrible! Even when we turned on the light like we were supposed to we were completely ignored. I had to get up and fill the water glasses myself since no one came to serve us. We saw our server twice - when she delivered our food and when she brought the check. I don't care what the custom is in Germany, we expect to be treated better than this! read more

If you're passing through Alamogordo on a road trip or while visiting White Sands National Park, this is a really unique stop. I don't know how the best German restaurant in the Southwest wound up in this little town, but I'm glad it did. The schnitzel and spaetzle are phenominal, and they even have Spezi, an awesome German soda that's half cola-half orange that I've never seen sold in the states. read more

For the area, I'm impressed they had German food at all. The service was okay, but they have an interesting call over service where you press the equivalent of the flight attempts button. We were excited to try this new German restaurant. They were really busy so we waited awhile. I'm not a fan of communal seating but some tables were emptying out so no one else sat with us. Hopefully, in the future they could add some 4 top & 2 top tables. Not having any fresh brewed unsweet or sweet tea is hard to understand. It would be easy to brew tea before opening. Also, to pay $3.50 for a bottle of Arizona tea at a full service restaurant cheapens the dining experience. The plain schnitzel was tender & the breading light & crispy. The purple cabbage had raisins which was different but it wasn't bad. Since the server suggested the "potato salad" I tried it but it really wasn't a potato salad. It had red potatoes, with smoky bacon that overrided the potatoes but no dressing or tartness. I really liked the spatzle side dish that my Hubby ordered more than mine. Spatzle is buttery dumpling like bits. Hubby's schnitzel had the mushroom gravy which was very good. They were sold out of desserts-for the last 6 days,as the owner was @ comic con. I understand anticipating sales can be difficult but perhaps have some leibkuchen on hand with a serving of Haagen-Daas vanilla bean. To leave & not address the lack of desserts is hard to understand as a fellow restaurateur. In the future, hopefully they can enhance the experience by upgrading to porcelain plates & nicer tables. Lose the plastic tablecloths under glass. For two of us w/out appetizers, 2 entrees, 1 pint of beer no desserts $51 is a little much for the overall dining experience. Prefacing this post with- I love German food, I have eaten tons of German food, and I have been to Germany before. This restaurant is by far the best German food I've had in the U.S.!! We had the goulash over spatzle and the schnitzel. Absolutely delicious- does not get better than this! Tons of German beer options, as well as a delicious German soda I've never seen anywhere here in the states. Service and owner very friendly. Prices extremely reasonable. Owner is from Germany and this is their family recipes. We are in town visiting white sands and cannot believe we've found the best German food we've ever had here in the town of Alamogordo. This restaurant recently opened in Alamogordo NM 88310. And, I guess German hospitality is not what it used to be. My wife and I walked in to try it, and luckily there was another couple being checked in in front of us. Because we overheard what the seating lady said to this couple. They would be seated, but if the restuarant got busy, which it would on a Staurday night, other people would be seated at their table too. I had a chance to look around while this was going on: There were no tables for 2, but only tables that sat 6. They had installed a long bar which took up 2/3rds of one side, which took up alot of space where tables for 2 could have been. I've recently personnally convinced cruise companies to have more tables for 2 because many people don't like eating with strangers. So, I'm not going to now put up with this practice in a restuarant. They are the only restuarant in Alamogordo, or anywhere else, that employs this practice. Bad experience here! There were 4 of us. Got there right after they opened at 3. We order pretty fast. Over an hour later 3 of us got the food. But 30 minutes later after everyone had eaten the final plate came out. It was the brat and sauerkraut on a roll. Meanwhile other people who came in after us got their food. Paid and left. There were two orders like mine but they got theirs right after then ordered. I'm thinking one was supposed to be mine. Horrible for a new restaurant to start out like this. read more

Angela (the owner) and Maddie and Amanda (waitstaff) were both very knowledgeable and friendly, introducing us to German customs, like home style cocktails, in a town that so desperately needs a great local spot with a heart for great food and customer service. We stopped for lunch while we were in town to visit White Sands national park. My husband ordered the Bratwurst and I ordered the goulash with spatzle. He had a pilsner and I got the lager on tap.
