Optimus Toys is packed to the brim with toys. They've got section for just about every type of toy your kids (or yourself. No judgement) would be in to. They even have a decent selection of older toys you won't be able to find elsewhere. Especially blind bag/box toys that are all the rage. For example, I saw Lego CMFs that were 2+ series old in stock. That really surprised me. And for a decent price too. I will say the staff is kinda non existent. They stick to the register & monitor things from there. If you need help, they'll do so, but the won't go out of their way. Prices are also...fine. I think you're paying a tad for convenience & to cover their retail space overhead. It might be cheaper to find some of these things online, but you can get them right then & there which, for me, will trump saving a couple dollars buying online. Optimus Toys brought me back to my childhood when you walked in to a toy store & were mesmerized with the potential of all the toys. Sure it's to a much smaller scale here, but it's still a fun place to check out and to show your kids. So I dropped over $200 at this store for christmas. Ine item that was $150+ (a firetruck). Came to return a $30-item within the 30-day typical return window. This is one of the coolest toy stores I've ever been too. It's really like a pop culture toy store with a weird name. Obviously, I got stuck in all the cute, Sanrio stuff and walked out with a My Melody Loungefly bag and other things I probably didn't need. There are so many things to look at in this store, so take your time to browse around or you're going to miss something. Also, there are random little sales on certain things, so look closely! This is a great store to look at for cool stuff. Employees are always super nice when I go there. Pros: Lots of cool items like Loungefly bags and wallets. Lots of Hello Kitty, which is nice since there is no longer a Sanrio Store at this mall. Lots of unique items/collectibles. Lots of more old fashioned stuff too for the younger set. Cons: A lot of the stuff is really too expensive. While they have a lot of Loungefly bags you cannot find at Hot Topic or Box Lunch, they are always priced anywhere from $15 to $40 more than you would find online or at other retailers. Also they sell a lot of anime collectibles, but at least 60% of them are counterfeit. I bought a couple Sailor Moon items a couple years ago only to find out as such since the paint jobs were off and the boxes looked like they were printed or xeroxed/copied onto the box. The only way to tell if they are official is if there are official silver Bandai/Toei stickers on them or if the box is sealed. If any of the boxes say that the box is empty until brought up to the register, that is a definite sign they're fake. One of these was one of the Sailor Moon toys I purchased and they did give me the wrong figure that was not printed on the box. Had I not checked shortly after leaving, I would've went home disappointed. Though it was just as disappointing when I saw the bin one of the employees was going through to fish out the "right" counterfeit figure. While it's a cool place to look, buyer beware. *update 6/28: I saw other reviews here about customers getting messages from the owner. There aren't many brick and mortar toys stores left, so I appreciate that we still have this one. They have quite a variety, including many toys that stores like Target and Walmart just don't carry. I usually go during the week around lunch time and the employees have all been nice. That being said, I probably won't be going back except on rare occasion. I recently visited the store when my son was in speech therapy at a nearby clinic and I saw they had a Playmobil toy that my son had been asking for. I had been looking for this specific item for weeks and have been unable to find it online. When I saw they had one in the store, I purchased it without a second thought. As I was leaving the mall, I was thinking about how the price seemed kind of high. I decided to look it up and the typical price for the item was $39.99, where they charged $55.00 in the store. I understand that there are extra costs involved with operating a physical toy store, but I think that markup is ridiculous. Maybe it's something they do for the holidays? I haven't price compared at other times of the year, so I can't be sure. I looked at other items and they seemed fairly expensive too. Next time I will drive a little further and shop at Barnes and Noble or Wee Loft. They both carry Playmobil. TL;DR - Excellent selection, price gouging (at least around the holidays) Update: I had originally claimed that the price for the toy was $65, but I noticed last night that it was actually $55 and have updated my review accordingly. This was my number one place to find squishmallows until I walked into the store today to see the owner raised the prices to higher than mercari. The prices were already over retail before and now are selling scalper prices. Very disappointed! Might as well go buy them online. They stared at my friends and I the entire time while we were shopping. Felt pretty unwelcome and judged the entire time. One of the workers literally tailed us and stared us down the aisle while we were shopping. We were just laughing though and having fun over all. I understand that you're trying to protect merchandise, but the employees didn't even bother to make conversation as a way to prevent thefts. They were just following us closely through the store and staring rudely, especially when we went to the back and looked at the Barbie toys. Regarding the merchandise, it's quite extensive with many board games and a few old-timey toys back from my own childhood in the 80s. There was also a Hello Kitty/Sanrio section, Barbie dolls, various stuffed animals tiny to large-sized, and much more. This fun toy store offers a large selection of Hello Kitty items as well as other toys and novelty items from My Little Pony and Breyer Horses to Disney's Toy Story characters and Universal Pictures' Despicable Me toys. What child does not enjoy taking a browse through a toy store? We've walked through this store with my daughter many times, but have yet to make a purchase, so I can't comment on their prices or personnel. What crooks. I bought a toy from this store and it didn't include batteries. My daughter was anxious to play with it so I asked if they sold batteries. I was told they did, and then handed over 2 USED AAA batteries that were not packaged. The employee didn't even know if they worked, he had to check. Next thing I know, the lady who owns the store turns to him and says to charge me 99 cents EACH. Not only that, but she told him to charge me TAX on these 2 USED AAA batteries!!! I bought them because I was desperate for my daughter to be able to play with the toy immediately - which was the whole reason I bought the toy - but I am beside myself. That woman is truly an idiot. I live close to here and my sister (who has small kids) and parents do too, and we come to this mall frequently. She just lost all of our business over $2.19. I would rather gouge out my own eyeballs than spend another cent in that cheapskate's store. I buy the same toys from amazon for much cheaper anyway. UPDATE: the batteries, which I bought at 7pm last night, right before my daughter fell asleep, were DEAD this morning at 7am!! She only played with the toy for maybe 15 minutes!! So they sold me DEAD batteries for $1 each PLUS TAX!! If this doesn't tell you what kind of people you'd be dealing with here, I don't know what would. STAY AWAY AT ALL COSTS. I should've told her to shove those batteries... SECOND UPDATE: The toy that I bought from them is BROKEN. It broke the day after I bought it, within hours of me replacing the dead batteries they sold me. My daughter is two, and none of her toys have broken before. I'm convinced they sold me a broken toy. Example: I went in to buy Pokemon cards, specifically an Elite Trainer box for the newest set, which is obviously still in print (it came out a week ago) and they were charging 80 dollars for it. MSRP for this item is 50 dollars. While this is an item in high demand, I couldn't believe they were selling it for an upcharge of over 150%, for, again, something that is currently in print. I'm all for supporting local businesses but this is deliberately being greedy with your customers. No major retailer does anything like this. This place is a toy store. It is located in the Mission Viejo mall next to the escalator that's in front of the Build-A-Bear on the second floor. There are a lot of toys here that one could not get elsewhere such as toys from Japan and Korea, but the prices were kind of high. I would think that it's less expensive than flying there just to buy them though. They were cute anyway. Most other toys seemed to be at around list or market rate price. There was no visible line so we just went to pay when there were no other people at the cash register. Not surprisingly, it went quickly. They have a state-of-the-art point-of-sale system. read more

Shoppers beware! This store is in the business of ripping off kids. The owner or manager of this store does not stand by their merchandise. My 8 year old son saved his allowance so that he could buy a toy that he has wanted for a while. He made the purchase at this store in the Mission Mall yesterday. And this morning, the toy was already broken. We went back to the store today to have this defective toy replaced. There were two young ladies working at the store at the time. Neither would do anything about it because they would get in trouble according to them. I told them I needed this resolved before I left the store. After making multiple calls, they spoke to someone on the phone who said that they would not replace the toy because these toys break. We left the store dissatisfied and found that the toy can be bought at any major toy chain for about 20% cheaper. read more

This place has an interesting array of toys. Staff has run the range of moderately helpful to completely withdrawn. Prices are extremely high compared to other options like big box or online. I expect to pay more at a store like this which is fine, but it shouldn't be as much as 40% more for the same item compared to Target or Amazon.
