Having heard so many things about Opus One and knowing how much a bottle costs, I was really curious about their wine. The day we came, they were sampling 2 vintages. The 2011 for $45 and the 2009 for $60. We did both so we could compare them side by side. Both were delicious but the 2009 was definitely smoother than the 2011. We started the tour with a glass of Overture Cabernet and ended the tour with a tasting of 2 satisfying vintages of Opus One (2010 and 2012) that surely did not disappoint. We had an incredible experience at opus one. Kaleb took care of us as one of their sommeliers, and patently answered our questions for several hours. We had their entire floor to ourselves and were treated like royalty. It wasn't snobbish or uncomfortable, we were never even slightly rushed and Kaleb was genuinely happy to look after us and answer all of our questions, well worth the money. I had a very disappointing experience at Opus One. First of all, I was not notified in advance that the building was under construction. The tasting took place in a tent outside. The tasting itself was really lackluster. The host poured the wine and just had us sit at a table. There was no discussion of the wine or the history of the winery. Typically, a tasting experience is made up of three things: (1) the wine, (2) the ambiance, and (3) hospitality. Opus One missed the mark on all three. There are plenty of much better wineries to visit in Napa. Save your money and go elsewhere. read more

No sooner did I get excited than I tried to order more with with them. Despite 6 emails and 5 phone calls they could not ship a single bottle of wine for less than $70 to Boston (even via ground) and they told me I would have to wait two weeks before they knew if they could ship it. Don't order directly from the winery and don't waste your time with a staff who is too busy for you. Also expect a SUPER LONG wait. So sad that customer service is so poor. read more

Overpriced wines, you are paying marketing and branding. I was there with a group on a company trip visiting. They were aware we were visiting from a luxury end chain hotel. Our 2016 Sonoma/Napa wine trip is in the books. I used to work in the restaurant industry and I always wanted to open that $200-300 bottle of Opus One for a guest. Now, going into restaurants, I still see that bottle and want to order it...but I don't want to spend that much on a bottle. So, why not check out Opus One so I can actually try it (and see if it's worth all that money). We arrived at the winery and it looks pretty sweet - I'm not going to lie. It's basically built into a hill...again, pretty sweet. We were led to the tasting room where an assistant was available to help us out. We had three options. Two vintages of Opus One and one of their "second wine". We got one glass of each of the Opus One vintages...about $50/each. We took the glasses upstairs to their "deck" area. The views are great and the place was not crowded at 2pm in the afternoon. The wine was good. The experience was fine - it's not the normal winery experience just to go for a tasting, but it was exactly what we wanted. Opus was the last winery of the trip and it was nice to just chill and reflect. Value - 5/10. Honestly, $50 for a glass a wine is pretty expensive. The wine was really good, but nothing that left us craving for more or to buy a bottle or six. I'm happy to say that I tried it, but I will not buy a bottle on our next night out (but I'd be happy to order it if someone else was paying). During our 2016 Napa/Sonoma trip, we visited 10 wineries: Hamel Family, Hendry, Viader, Phifer Pavitt, Twenty Rows, B Cellars, Robert Mondovi, Quintessa, Mumm, and Opus One. read more

I mean, Opus one lives up to to expectations! To be honest, I am in no way a wine expert. I enjoy drinking wine and I visit wineries in Napa and Sonoma and I raid the wine sections at local stores and that's about the extend of my knowledge. But man, tasting Opus One and then going to tastings from some other wineries in the area (I will not name them) will for sure allow you to understand why Opus is so worth the investment. Sure, it's pricey, so save that bottle for a especially special occasion! Our tour guide (so sorry, I forgot your name T.T) was very personable and knowledgeable. Tasting tours are by reservation only, so make sure to plan ahead! They will give you a glass to take up to the terrace for slow sipping and enjoyment of the amazing view and estate. 5/9/10 took a tour by myself. I call in this morning to make a reservation for a tour to one of the well known winery in Napa. I was told that their are 2 open space for me in the afternoon, because two people canceled their reservation. I was lucky enough to get this spot, because the space is very limited for this winery. So, the tour was at 1:30pm and it consisted of a walk through in and outside of the winery. It was a great tour for me because I'm learning how to make wine myself, but from a wine kits. Nothing big and not to fancy. I consider myself an amateur wine maker and wine collector. However, I'm a huge fan of fine wine and I do own one bottle of 1975 Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 05 Opus One and Overture myself. I love Bordeaux and French (Pauillac) wine is one of my favorite appellation. For $40 I think, it's worth. I get to tried an 06 Opus One. I still can test the french oaks and dark chocolate on my pallet, after I got home. Total: $40 Pro: very limited production of fine Bordeaux blend in Napa. Con: very limited tour schedules, but that's understandable. read more

Beautiful location, but snobby/disinterested staff make it an impersonal (if not downright poor) experience. On offer: the 2010 ($60) and 2012 ($45) vintages; I opted for both, of course. And given the retail price of Opus One, that's a decent deal. The 2010 was excellent - full-bodied, intense, and a real joy to drink. The 2012 was smoother and possibly richer - and still good - but not really my style compared to the 2010. The problem is that staff don't seem to care. The hostess on arrival was downright rude. And when I ordered my tastings, the server poured the wine and literally just walked away. Not even an "enjoy" or a "thank you" or anything, much less any actual information about the wine or vintages. And when we tried to ask another employee a question, he acted like we were a bother. The estate is undeniably beautiful and drinking our wine on the upper floor with an amazing view of the vineyards was a nice experience. Ultimately, I guess for huge Opus One fans or people who want to try a glass of Opus One at a decent price while checking out a beautiful estate, it's probably worth one visit (just avoid interacting with the staff). If not, I think there are a number of vineyards that will give a far more personal, informative, and pleasant experience, and often times similar or better wine to boot. read more

Opus One winery is a spectacular architectural winery. The combination of Rothschild and Mondavi skilled wine making is the blueprint from the architecture to the label of the wine. Our tour started in a gathering room with amazing paintings, furniture, and historical stories. We were greeted with the Overture Bordeaux, which was amazing and very complex but beautiful wine. The tour guide was very knowledgeable in how the grapes are grown and why they grow the grapes the way they do. The machines were the wines are made is state of the art technology which one might expect from the Opus One. I consider myself privileged for having embarked on a private trade tour through Opus One Winery in spring of 2002. Innumerable thanks to Kent Fortner (then VP of Sales and Marketing at Luna Vineyards - Mike Moon, George Vare, and John Kongsgaard's lovechild; currently owner and winemaker of Green Truck Cellars), my insider, "trade" contact for arranging it. Also, an immense, dilatory thank-you to Monsieur Peter Henry Ventura, co-CEO of Opus One, for being a most gracious host, and of course, the two bottles of 1998s which shall continue to mature in my cellar towards endless complexity for another decade, I'm sure. With that, I now seek to bring Yelpers the Insider View at Opus One. Needless to say, the entrance is grand, with the ground level housing the reception and offices, the rotunda, and finally, the Salon (a formal sitting room). A spiral stairwell that would have made Led Zeppelin proud descends to the lower level, home to an extensive chemical analysis laboratory, approximately 40 steel vats of fermenting and macerating wine, enology charts and graphs, and a round tasting room encased in glass. On the other side of the glass is the dramatic Grand Chai, a sweeping semicircle of a cellar where 1,000 barrels of wine sleep and dream side-by-side for at least a year. It is misty in the cellar (for humidity and evaporation control), but even amidst the fog you see that the bellies of the new French Oak barrels are stained a stately red - no doubt from the topping-up and racking that occur as frequently as every three months. After approximately a year in its barrel beds, the wine then spends another year or so maturing in bottles before release. Back upstairs, over in the sitting room, appropriately named "the Salon," you're instantly whisked away to French Heaven, it seems. I would advocate a "no wine policy" in there for fear of staining that luxurious, cream colored Old-World-meets-New-World decor (although, knowing the perfectionists at Opus One, however, my worries are probably pre-empted by Teflon). And it is just as breathtaking outside the winery, which is surrounded by redwoods. Commanding impressive acreage, the vines look especially impressive for how densely they are grown - not without a reason. Dense vines have roots that are forced to compete with one another for water and nutrients in a survival-of-the-fittest kind of way, which, ironically though not counter-intuitively, results in better quality grapes (i.e., out of those that emerge triumphant). This is the Old World French approach to winemaking. According to Wayne, guide extraordinaire, Opus One makes 24K to 30K cases a year (in 2002). All fruit are hand-picked and travel in small, airy baskets (as opposed to the giant containers the rest of the industry apparently employs) to prevent bruising. The fruit is then hand-sorted on a conveyor belt, and any "rejected" or second-rate fruit goes to its second label, Overture. Thus, you can be sure that the fruit which makes the wine of the highest quality is of Stanford caliber. Overture, obviously, is a label better suited for, say, Cal graduates. (Sorry, that was low, but since that time of the year is approaching... BEAT CAL.) Enough about the winemaking and refining process already, but not because I am boring myself or Yelpers but because the very attentive Jean T. I didn't know Opus prior to our arrival. That's not quite right. I've known about many opi, some symphonies, Mr. Holland's movie, the penguin, but I was unfamiliar with the winery. My wife wisely kept radio silence until we drove up the long road, straddled on either side with olive trees. "This place looks like the lair of a James Bond villain," I said passingly. I was wrong. Opus 1 is EXACTLY like the lair of a James Bond villain. When I was done, I half expected the ground to open up and a doomsday laser to rise, tumescent and triumphant into the air. "You expect me to talk?" "No, Mr. Yelper, I expect you to DIE." But I get ahead of myself. Look, I'm a simple dude. I drink cheap beer and well vodka not because of some hipster credo, but because I genuinely LIKE cheap beer and well vodka. I only own one ill-fitting tuxedo and my sole monocle is in dire need of a shining. So, yes, take my rating of Opus 1 and my ultimately unrefined palate with a grain of salt...preferably a flake taken from the artisan salt makeer of the Danish island Læsø Saltsyderi. The tastings are $30. A glass. They are doled out by a single man, teeth pulled back in an unsmiling smile, and described with droll, patrician's delivery that immediately made me self-conscious of my rented Chevy Aveo parked pitifully in the lot. The wine seemed good. I guess. Again, my plebeian tastes were ill-suited for this venture. I swirled the glass and noted the dark hues. I sipped. I tasted undercurrents of black cherries, vanilla, and the regret of a childhood lost, a rusty, wooden sled strewn across a pile of refuse. Also, mahogany. My wife, ultimately being one who I thank the Lord Yahweh every day, has fairly simple tastes (especially in men), eventually giggled at herself and the setting. My Mom, little sister and I had an interesting experience here... this was years ago when my youngest sister was 12 and tagged along for a day in wine country riding the train and all. She's 21 now so to be fair we should probably take her so she can enjoy what "Napa" (Yountville, Sonoma, St. Helena etc...) truly has to offer. Funny thing is we got hooked up with tasting fee by chance because a tour bus of Asian people (Chinese) I think walked in the same time we did. We are Japanese (not that it matters) and walked up to the tasting room counter and enjoyed some beautiful wines. Taste after taste was poured and they didn't charge us because the guy next to us just purchased several bottles. Thank you Mr. Tourist from another country, you made our day! Besides my experience in the tasting room, I've had the opportunity to enjoy some Opus One on a couple occasions and special occasions they were. I'm not into cult wines (only because I don't make as much money as I used to otherwise I's have a cellar and then some) or into trendy wine labels but Opus One is definitely a fine exception. read more

A friendly tip about Yelp! reviews--look at the little icons next to each reviewer to see how many friends they have and how many reviews they've done. You'll see many one-star reviewers only have a few reviews and not many friends. Reviewers with one review often create an account just to complain anonymously about one place. That throws off the star rating system a bit. Conversely, active Yelpers have lots of reviews and friends. The point being is it helps you gauge the usefulness of each reviewer. For Opus One you'll see many Elite Yelpers really like this place. Their reviews are probably more accurate that someone who signed up just to complain. From my standpoint, Opus One was full of surprises. I hadn't gone because I thought it would be too stuffy. But I went on my birthday and ended up having what is probably the best winery visit experience ever, and I've been to close to 500 wineries around the world. It was anything but stuffy. I found my hosts to be witty, light hearted, informative and down to earth. There was a great sense of humility in how they talked about their history. I did a tour of the winery and vineyards which ended with a wine tasting. They heard it was my birthday, and had a chilled bottle of Champagne waiting to enjoy before our tasting began. We had such a good time, we invited our hosts to join us for lunch at Rutherford Grill. We went back a second time and had an equally enjoyable visit. Opus One isn't your parent's wine any more. Called opus one to ask if I could do a walk in with my sister - she said it was really busy and i said I understood that since it was holiday weekend I should've made a reservation, but that's why i called to ask about availability and I'm 5 miles away. Her response, it's busy, but yes, come by and do a walk-in. I show up 10-15 minutes later and I spoke to diana who said that they were fully booked. Mind you - I told her what the person over the phone said. Her response? well yes we're fully booked now. Instead of saying something along the lines of "well i'm not sure who you spoke to, but I apologize for the misunderstanding..." this was her response - which made me to believe she was the person I spoke to over the phone!! there's a REASON i call prior to showing up - to make sure they are accepting walk-ins!!! why else would I call? Upon arrival they gave us complimentary champagne AND had the tasting ALREADY WAITING for us set up at the table. First class experience! All the wines were delicious esp the 2006. I was wrong about 1, I still believe 2 to be true however 3 could not be further from the truth. This is one expensive tasting experience. If you really have a wild hair and feel the need to sample Opus One wine, you are far better off just buying a bottle at K and L and taking it home. Yes, you are given a full on education course in the art of wine making. But you can get the very same experience at countless other wineries at a fraction of the price. Opus One does produce an excellent bottle of juice, but at that price point there are so many others I would drink before dropping north of a C note on a bottle. $30 for ONE tasting. I mean, one itty bitty pouring of wine. Given that most of the Napa Valley tastings range from $10-20 for a FLIGHT of wine tastings - - this is a LOT. I love Opus One wines - - their cabernet sauvignon floats my boat. And I am well aware that these are pricey wines. If you're giving me a full glass of wine - fine, charge me $30 per glass. But at the same two sips of wine that all the other wineries offer - - it seems a bit ridiculous! I will say that their property is amazing, the building is beautiful, the rooftop terrace at which you can sip your $30-two-sips-of-wine was breathtaking. But I still don't know if it was worth it. Appointments are needed and you'll find it's quite efficient in that there is never the madhouse that you find at Mondavi, or other more popular wineries at which crowds gather. They do extend a mood of being exclusive and all, which I appreciate. But the bottom line is that other wineries are breaking down their per glass charge to $2-3 per tasting, give or take. And Opus One, while truly a great wine, is not worth 10X that amount for a 3 oz. sip. At that price, it better be making me younger w/ every sip. That said - we did buy a bottle. It is, afterall, Opus One, but we bought a bottle of Overture as I've had their regular Cabs before, and am curious what the "available only at the Winery Overture" is going to be like. I'm excited to try it! So after 45 minutes at the property - we're out $90 for 3 tastings (two of the '04 and one of the '03) and then a bottle of Overture ($50). All in all - - if a friend asked me for a recommendation - - I'd suggest Joseph Phelps if you're going for the wine itself and want views and beauty - - or Sterling, if you're wanting the great views and setting but are a little less picky about the wine. Impressive structure with a large door. It felt like walking into a museum. Check in at the front desk felt a little like a hotel. The tasting itself is really a glass of wine. Well, there was also a taste of the Overture. I have tons of respect for what Robert Mondavi did for the Napa Valley and Opus One was definitely an important part of the history But there are so many high end wineries in Napa now and this felt like...having a nice glass of wine in a hotel lobby. Note: I only give out 5 stars to surprisingly EXCEPTIONAL, best-in-class establishments. Ahh, Opus One. Definitely one of my favorites. Now, some fellow Yelpers have balked at the pretentiousness and pricing strategy of this winery. I definitely understand their frustrations, but it would be best to understand Opus One for what it is: a luxury winery committed to producing a luxury good and experience. Opus One, if you can properly afford it, is a wonderfully complex option in comparison to many other offerings in the area. Can you tell the difference? Well, I would argue that most wine drinkers can tell the difference between bad wine and good wine. But your experience with Opus One depends on your ability to truly discern characteristics of good wine from those of great wine. I believe that many reviewers have overestimated their abilities, and balk at Opus One's pricing and reputation, which has unduly influenced their perception of the product. The only reason I have not given one of my favorite wineries a 5-star rating is because I somewhat agree with other critics regarding Opus One's pretentiousness. The $45-ish tasting price point is acceptable for such a high-quality product, but I believe that a lower price point for a smaller TASTING would be amenable to introduce more people to the joys of Opus One. This winery requires reservations for either of its two tour options, and reservations are highly recommended for the tasting experience (though walk-ins may be possible depending on the busyness). Personally, I love a higher price point and required reservations since they tend to reduce the amount of families with unruly children and frat/sorority/bachelorette partyers, though they also tend to increase the number of pretentious materialists. Yes, this is a stupidly expensive tasting. Just get over that. What's nice is that you get a full glass of wine, rather than just a 1oz. pour. It's really interesting to splurge on both of the vintages they have available and compare the two. While they're the same wine, the winemaker starts with what they call "the kitchen sink" (everything they make in the same proportions that they grow them), and then adjusts the formula from there. I can't imagine the skill and palette of someone who can say, "No, there needs to be one or two more drops of cabernet franc in this wine." But they do it. The winery itself is gorgeous, with a beautiful lookout onto the valley from the upstairs terrace. They require a reservation, but it was easy to get online and if they weren't busy I'm pretty sure they would let you taste without one. They could easily be pretentious and unwilling to let you share, but that's just not the case. I really enjoyed it, though I was definitely sad not to take a bottle home with me. Maybe someone with a much more sophisticated palette can justify a wine that expensive, but I was happy with just a taste. read more

Furthermore, after visiting Napa for few months I realized that they do have generous appointment policy (you can really just show up without one). Hence I'm increasing the # of stars to three. ***ORIGINAL REVIEW 7/30/2007 (1 Star)*** Did not enjoy this winery or wine at all. Yes, the building looks like a modern art museum. That's cool. But everything else isn't. First, you need a reservation to taste. Luckily, we were able to do a tasting without one, but still, it's so snobbish that they don't even call it a tasting room but rather something else to make it sound more exclusive and special. Second, they charge $30 for a taste of single wine. OK, it's for a taste of the $165 bottle. But can't they do the math that it's so much better deal to purchase a bottle and have a full glass if you come with more than, say, four people? And many Napa tourists come in party of that number or more. Third, their wine is too young to enjoy today. Yes, it may taste different 7 years after. But no, I don't think many average wine drinkers, including myself, are skilled enough to project how the wine would taste after 7 years and enjoy the small pour of young, strongly tannic and sharp-tasting wine. Why don't they pour the new/current release AND some 7-year old wine so that we can be educated? Fourth, they don't give you a free wine glass. For $30, I at least expect that. To conclude, I will never ever go back to Opus One for tasting. Spend your alcohol tolerance visiting other wineries (although the wine was bad, I couldn't just dump it after paying $30 for a 1/4 glass). read more

Bad service and terrible wine that is completely over priced. I've been going here for years but the management has gone downhill.

Opus One is a grandiose winery with a massive building set aside for the tasting room. They only do tastings by bookings only (super pretentious, but given the building, not unsurprising). Luckily the day we arrived, they weren't too busy so we could just book right then for a tasting right then on ridiculous iPads in a corner of the room (pretension level rising). They only had one wine on offer that day to try. It was $45 to taste one of their wines. Yeah it was good. Not amazing though, and super over-priced for what the wine was. I guess they have to sell the wine for that price to pay for their ridiculous wine tasting facility. But hey, if people really will pay that much for over-hyped wine, I guess they can get away with it. You can find better, much cheaper and less pretentious wines all over Napa valley. read more
