We just moved into our new home. Found out later (after escrow closed!) that the neighbor tore down the entire block wall between our properties. This wall was also a retaining wall (2 foot height difference, our side the high side) and protecting a pool. We had to build a wall. Our land was sliding into hers. Dan came out and was not only patient but remarkably calm in dealing with the neighbor who was fighting us all the way. I was surprised he actually took the project. Dan's crew worked hard and the finished 2' fall (114"ft long) looks great and straight. Also had to use new city approved plans that build the foundation entirely on our side (she said no to any foundation...?). She also destroyed several new set blocks. She prolonged the time to finish it but was worth the wait. Another company came in and put up a vinyl fence on top of the block wall. Looks great! Price was good (since it was only 2 feet high...) Our property sits slightly below our neighbor and after we completed some construction, our side yard needed to be reworked to make it usable. We also had a planter that became unusable, really an eyesore, and took up a large portion of our backyard. I called and left Dan a message asking to get a quote on a dividing wall for my property. A couple of days later Dan called back, he seemed professional and helpful. He asked what would be a good time for him to come out, I stated you tell me the day and time and I'll be here. He didn't show up at the 4:00 time he asked for,,, he didn't call. My wife and I decided to take the dog for a walk at 4:30, when we got back an hour later there was a message on my phone, "this is Dan, I'm 45 minutes late and I apologize.... bla bla bla". He canceled the appointment, the appointment at the time he set, and stated I have a little more flexible schedule tomorrow and should be able to make it at about the same time..... call me if that works for ya. A couple of things here: / It's obvious you knew you wouldn't make the appt well in advance, so call AHEAD of the appointment and ask to reschedule. / If you can't make the appointment time you've GOT to try to make it there the same day. / WHY would anyone do work with a contractor who can't be on time to make the appointment he scheduled and not have the courtesy to call ahead to state so. / I worked in customer service for over 30 years, never cancel an appointment you scheduled and act like you're doing the customer a favor by fitting them in because you have a day with a more "flexible" schedule. In conclusion, it's possible that Dan is too busy to even do the work I requested, having been in a business that at times was impossibly busy I know what that's like, but if that's the case it's better to be honest and state such to the customer. Another possibility is Dan overlooked or forget about the appointment, and WOW,,,, that's possibly even worse. Needed to hire a contractor to install a block wall for the back of my home. I called three companies and felt that OC block wall would be the best fit despite being the most expensive of the three bids. One of my big concerns was for our landscaping that we had installed in our backyard a few years ago (sprinklers right against the area where the wall was to be installed along with palm trees, plants, a dry-stacked water feature, landscape lighting, bamboo plants, and so on). I wasn't sure if the workers would take proper care of the property. Now that the installation is complete I am very pleased with how they worked in our yard. Even the ivy that was growing on the fence that was replaced looks like it might make it! The install did take a bit longer than I was originally told, but it was worth it. I only wish Dan fixed and built other stuff too because anyone out there that has dealt with a contractor knows the long list of shortcomings to be expected. But Dan isn't your typical contractor. On time? Check. Accessible via phone? Check.. Seriously. Accessible via phone? Check. Cleanliness of crew? Check. Respectable and professional? Check. Affordable? Very check. Oversight of job? Check. Listens to customer's needs? Check. I won't bore you with the details but we had a semi difficult project. 190 linear feet of hillside footing and split face block wall for our glass fence. We had 18 contractors come bid the job. Trust me, it's not because we were picky. 70% of them thought they were God's gift to structural engineering and didn't really want to listen to what we wanted. The other 30% thought the cost of the job should cover a new BMW for their wives. We never had those problems with Dan. He did what WE asked of him and he was always quick to resolve any problems that came up. And his price was so reasonable that I was worried that I might be getting what I paid for, in a not-so-good way...but that was far from the truth. My husband and I highly recommend OC Block Wall. We wanted to replace a rotting wooden fence with a slump stone block (to match a slump stone wall on the other side of the property). Dan came out, walked me through the process, took measurements, and listened to my concerns.
