If something breaks, well that is a repair. A routine service in my mind should service routine issues. Not with Ben's. They came in, did a basic service and then proceeded to perform work that was not needed. They convinced me that I needed to have a valve reinstalled in the opposite direction claiming that original installer did the install wrong, even though there was not sign of problems for 5 years. And they grounded my system even though it was already grounded (they refunded this charge). Remember the old Sears auto repair? You'd go in for new tires or an oil change and while the car was up on the lift, they'd spray oil on your shocks and then claim you needed you new shock. When they got busted they got out of the car repair business. Your experience will feel like this at Bens. We used Bens from around 2008-2018 and when they came to service the furnace, they did that, no extra charges. Now they come in at $189 or $249 for a service and try to tack on $350 in additional charges. If your experience is different, I'm glad to hear it. Feels like bait and switch to me. At the same time, we are all talking about rising costs and how we're paying more than twice what we used to just a couple of years ago. Companies like Specialty Heating & Cooling are contributing to this problem with pricing practices that, in my view, take advantage of customers. Last week, I noticed an unusual noise coming from our furnace. I had a good idea of what it might be, as I dealt with the same issue when we lived in a different home. I called Specialty Heating & Cooling and scheduled an appointment. The technician arrived on time, and within five minutes, the diagnostics confirmed exactly what I suspected. That's when I was told there was a $189 diagnostic fee--something no one had mentioned when I scheduled the visit. I paid it, but I made it clear that this had not been disclosed. The technician said he would call after the Thanksgiving weekend with a repair estimate. On Monday, he contacted me and asked for my email. When I requested the total cost of the repair, the quote was $1,186.43. I asked for an explanation of how they justified charging nearly $1,200 for a part that retails for about $142, installs with three screws, and takes less than 30 minutes to replace. Unfortunately, no clear explanation was provided. If their quote had been anywhere near reasonable--say, up to $500--I would have approved the repair immediately. I spent a total of 15 minutes removing and reinstalling that part. The entire process required removing and replacing only three 1/4-inch screws. Given how quick and simple the job was, I'm struggling to understand why the charge was so high. This level of work does not justify the price that I was quoted. However, at this price, I strongly suggest exploring alternatives before calling Specialty Heating & Cooling, unless you're comfortable paying far more than what the job is worth.

In 2018, Specialty Heating came to fix my air conditioning. They told me my venting wasn't…read moreconducive for central air. I didn't understand this because my house currently had central air. They talked me into getting a mini split unit for cooling in my upstairs main level. I have since had an assessment done and this is not the case, central air would work fine. I've had multiple issues with the mini split unit requiring Specialty to come out. Multiple times it has started leaking water which would drip over an electrical outlet and onto my floor. In August of 2023, I noticed my mini split did not seem to be cooling. Specialty came out and told me the coolant had leaked out of my unit. I paid $627.00 to have them fix it. Now in 2025, I again noticed the unit not cooling. I was tired of Specialty never seeming to fix anything so I called a different company. The new company came out and told me all of the coolant had again leaked out. They told me this should not have happened once, let alone twice. I called Specialty and asked them if they had checked for a leak when they were out in 2023. They told me I hadn't paid for them to do that. For one thing, I was not told anything about additional work to check for a leak and for another, I would think checking for a leak should have been part of the service call. I don't know if Specialty didn't do a pressure check or what at the time they installed my mini split, but the new company I called told me a unit like this should not leak coolant and Specialty should have checked for a leak and fixed the problem without charging me anything. I do not believe Specialty installed my mini split unit correctly and that is why the coolant has leaked out twice. I had the new company do an assessment on my current furnace and venting and was told there is no issue with me having central air so why Specialty told me my setup was not conducive to central air is a mystery. Removing my central air unit and having a mini split unit installed has caused me great expense. I paid about $5,500 for a mini split unit I didn't need and have had nothing but problems with and I am now having to have the mini split unit removed and purchase all new equipment for central air which will be around $9,000. Had I not been misinformed by Specialty, I could have applied the $5,500 mini split cost toward fixing my central air back in 2018. I feel Specialty should give me part of my money back.
