This company has gone down hill over the last 10 years. I had a furnace serviced and was told my injectors needed cleaning. I thought that was what a service was for. If something breaks, well that is a repair. A routine service in my mind should service routine issues. Not with Ben's. They came in, did a basic service and then proceeded to perform work that was not needed. They convinced me that I needed to have a valve reinstalled in the opposite direction claiming that original installer did the install wrong, even though there was not sign of problems for 5 years. And they grounded my system even though it was already grounded (they refunded this charge). Remember the old Sears auto repair? You'd go in for new tires or an oil change and while the car was up on the lift, they'd spray oil on your shocks and then claim you needed you new shock. When they got busted they got out of the car repair business. Your experience will feel like this at Bens. We used Bens from around 2008-2018 and when they came to service the furnace, they did that, no extra charges. Now they come in at $189 or $249 for a service and try to tack on $350 in additional charges. If your experience is different, I'm glad to hear it. Feels like bait and switch to me. They did a good job. The new units are working great and both the heater and air conditioner have been working fine. I know they had some problems getting their act together, but the service has improved a lot. I would recommend them. I have been a loyal customer since 2001. The service guys made an extra trip to Home Depot to be able to get extra items to complete the work on the furnace. They had a small area, but they got the work done. read more

After having a larger HVAC firm tell me that my furnace was not only failing but would soon be emitting dangerous carbon monoxide fumes, I decided to contact Ben's for another opinion. Brandon, the sales manager came out, looked at the furnace, and said that it was fine for now, no danger of noxious fumes and that it was well maintained and looked pretty good for an old furnace. My husband had passed away recently, and I felt like that first company I called was taking advantage. Ben's did the Opposite--gave me good advice, an honest assessment, and didn't charge me for looking at it given my situation. They do good and thorough work, but they are completely unavailable on the weekend. They installed new thermostats and adjusted the dampers for heating last winter, but now, on a 99 degree day, we have no air conditioning upstairs at all, and they don't answer the phone or even allow you to leave a message. And it's their work that needs fixing in the first place! Really not okay to leave us in this position (same thing happened when they were supposed to have fixed the heat during the winter, the repair did not work, and we were stuck in our 50 degree home all weekend because they wouldn't even respond during the weekend). They got it fixed, but they should not leave their customers in the lurch like this, especially when it's to fix their own mistakes. P.S. I tried the chat function on their website, but got nothing but platitudes about scheduling a service call during the week, which leaves us completely in the lurch with a 90 degree bedroom until they get around to us. read more

We had someone come out over three weeks ago and still have not received a quote. We received an email-addressed to the wrong person- without any prices on options that we had inquired about. My husband and I have emailed and texted multiple times within the last two weeks and have received the same responses. However- four seasons in Newberg did a walk through and we had a quote that evening. We will be going with them and I would recommend the same if anyone else has these issues. read more

Only a year after installation my heat pump quit when the temperature was too high. It looked like a month's wait for service, but Angelo stepped in and made things happen. Scheduled cleaning/maintenance for my mini split. Tech (very nice) took it all apart but then told me cleaning coils would double the cost. I ended up cleaning everything. I hired them because I didn't want to clean it myself because I have asthma and sure enough I started wheezing. What a waste of money. I should have just done it myself in the first place. Ben's makes the extra effort, once again! Several years ago, our furnace went out during a snowstorm. The owner made it up our steep, slick hill to help us get our heat back on. Now, during some of the worst air quality from wildfires -and after losing their own home- Ben's opened their warehouse to give away their entire stores of furnace filters to families who needed one after other stores sold out. Ben's Heating rebuilt and reinstalled a faulty gas heater in my apartment. They were hired by my landlord. I was woken up by a bright flame in my heater. I called emergency maintenance and it was found to be leaking gas. It was then "repaired" by Ben's Heating. I was assured my safety by the worker. Hours later, my front room was lit up by two flames inside the heater and I called 911. NW Natural confirmed the hazardous conditions and two leaks. I've also been exposed to low levels of carbon monoxide for 2 months. Ben's Heating has failed to follow up with a schedule for a new heater. They risked my life and long term health and can't return a call? Update in response to Owner: I appreciate your reply, but I do not consider myself in good hands with Ben's Heating. How can I, after the company installed my heater wrong and leaking gas TWICE? I explicitly asked the worker if he had checked for leaks and he said "yes" and that there were no leaks, when actually there were TWO. I will be having NW Natural inspect your next work in my apartment to ensure my safety. If I had a choice, I would hire a different vendor. read more

We chose Ben's Heating and Cooling to install a new gas furnace and AC and are so glad we did. Not only were they prompt and knowledgeable when we were collecting quotes, had great rates, but we really loved going with a locally owned family business. We were very interested installing a SensiPredict with our HVAC system so that we could have a smart HVAC and catch small problems before they actually effect our equipment. Ben's went out of their way to attend training on how to install, get the product, and help us get it activated. The install day of was very efficient and the workers were kind and knowledgeable. We did run into an issue where we noticed after a few days that the system wasn't really cooling effectively. Ben's came out again and did an inspection and found a large break in our duct in the attic. I would recommend adding some sort of inspection to the process of getting a new HVAC just to make sure this is prevented but they fixed that day. Finally, we are in a terrible heatwave of well over 100 degree weather and our new system is averaging at being able to cool our house by 30 degrees in comparison to the outdoor temperature! read more

I cannot say enough great things about my experiences with Ben's Heating and Cooling. If you have a complicated system/job, you need these guy's experience and help. They are more than helpful; they listen and are super responsive. They do what they say they will do when they say they will do it, and their prices are more than fair. My story follows: To start, we bought our house about 8 years ago and the heating unit has never performed well; I'll get to why shortly. On 2 occasions in the past, we reached out to Ben's for repair work on it, initially because of the maintenance sticker on the unit had their info. And though the unit was REALLY old, they did what they could to limp it along as best as they could (at our request). Well, after (what ended up being) 42 years of service, the furnace finally had had it. I called up Ben's because they had been so helpful in the past. Because we had a situation where we did not have any heating (and it was starting to get really cold outside), they gave us priority to come out and get things going. Keith came out and did a great job listening to my concerns and made some great recommendations. When it became clear that our house was going to be more than just a swap out of old unit to the new unit (we also wanted to add AC to the house), he brought in Brandon (Keith's manager, I believe) to come out and see if there were any other considerations that needed to be addressed to make this happen. I'm glad he did, because he found that there would need to be some drastic changes to how the unit would be installed to accommodate my requests (this due to the space constraints in the location the furnace was in and what we wanted in a new system). I really wanted that AC, so we talked about some clever ways that they could make that work. In the meantime between when we settled on the equipment I'd need and when they could install it (only a few days later), Brandon offered to have space heaters brought out to the house for us, and they did a couple hours later that day. To take a story that is already going long and summarize: what we ended up doing was moving the location of the furnace/AC stack to a place in my house with more room for it and altering the duct design to suit the new location. This allowed for much more even air flow in my late 70s 2-story house. The problem was that the house's duct design was compromised when a previous owner (probably in the late 1990s), had had the basement finished and the contractor (who obviously had no experience with duct design) just hooked up the vents the easiest way possible, with no consideration to air flow/pressure. Our downstairs media room was ALWAYS cold, as was our family room (these locations are at the extreme ends of the house). When Bruce (the lead installer for my project) came out the Friday before the work was to begin on Monday, that is when I was absolutely sure I was working with the right company. Bruce came up with some great ideas to take a simple idea I had: 'let's just add AC while we are getting a new furnace', and detail it out and turn it into a workable solution. Due to the complexity of the job, it took 2 and a half days to get the system installed and calibrated, and Bruce, Walker and Austin were fantastic to work with. Great guys and they worked hard each day, all day. Their results speak for themselves. I got a new thermostat with the system (Honeywell with remote sensors, Ben's sells them) and it is showing even temps across all measured rooms in the house (never more than a degree or two) variance. I consider that to be amazing in this house, and this is not a multi-zone system either. Here is what it is: the right system, the right design, installed and setup by the right people. That is what you can expect from the team at Ben's Heating and Cooling. All I can say is do yourself a favor and call someone else! I'm not sure if these people are just incompetent or worse yet dishonest and trying to rip people off. But we called them because our downstairs was colder than the rest of our house (this was in winter). They sent a guy out & he told us "the vents aren't working". They said we needed a separate unit for the downstairs but would have to have the "expert" give us a quote. Weeks go by, no quote. Then they send us a quote for thousands and thousands of dollars. When we question if this is the right solution, the next communication is that the suggestion is that they put not one unit...but two new units in!!!! And then send another person out! Now this guy says that we need 3 new vents installed! If this sounds confusing...I can understand why, because that's exactly how we felt...confused! Every person that came out said something different to the tune of like $30K. They also told us we didn't have return vents (and quoted us to put those in)- which was a lie...not only do we have them, but we have one on every floor! Needless to say...I called a vent person to establish what might be actually going on, cause just using common sense...the rest of the house is hot as can be. So it doesn't seem to make sense a new unit was needed (and certainly not 2 new units)! Bottom line...after messing around with Ben's for months...the whole problem was taken care of by a competent company in 3 hours and less than $500! They added one vent and did a cleaning where they rebooted the vents...and done!! Problem was immediately fixed and is working great in both winter and summer!!! Do yourself a favor- call someone else...these people are either highly incompetent or rip off artists! read more

Since moving into the house we bought, we have had a few problems with this place's H/C. After some (surprisingly expensive) mixed-bag experiences with 2 other companies trouble shooting our heat, I wanted to at least check our other options when our A/C wasn't working (at the start of a 100+ degree heatwave). I planned to call around and test our options, but the two people I talked to at Ben's were so immediately and supremely helpful and kind that I didn't have to (or particularly want to) keep checking around. Came out to my home to give quote for new HVAC unit, "Brandon" showed up on, told me they would & could do the job and he would email me a quote that evening... over a week later & several phone calls asking for the quote, got it via email. Emailed "Brandon" with questions... No response. If this is how they treat you when trying to get a new system installed, I'd hate to see the customer service you Don't get after your system is installed, and something goes wrong. They sell "Bryant" products.. Look at the reviews for "Bryant" before you buy. If they didn't want to do my new install, or the business they should had just said so, vs stringing me along, and waisting my time. I highly DO NOT recommend this company. read more

I have been a customer of this family owned company since I moved into this house 30 years ago. My first experience was an after hours call that was more than fantastic. The owner didn't charge me for after hours and was able to fix my problems. I have purchased A/C units and a furnace since that time. I always have Ben's come out twice a year for cleaning and maintenance. Yesterday my air conditioner just stopped working!! I called Ben's right away. Talked to Dana - who is absolutely fabulous- she helped me right away. Told me someone could come here on Monday. I thought that was great, especially considering it's Friday and a high temp day. She ended up calling me back a bit later and said she could have someone be at my house this afternoon!!! Justin - who is so nice and knowledgeable- came out and fixed the issue! It was a bad part, covered under warranty. Since I have a maintenance contract the service charge was EXTREMELY reasonable. I highly recommend Ben's. You cannot do better. I recently had Ben's Heating and AC install a new furnace and AC unit. I had four estimates and there's was the most fair and professional, so I went with them. My older heat pump died and I made the decision to upgrade to gas. Jack came out and provided an estimate and directions on how to get set up with NW Natural Gas. Kyle and his teams came out and knocked out the work in two days. It included removing the old system, installing some additional ducting, and installing the new system. They also added a couple of T connections in the gas line so I can save myself time and money when I add a gas hot water heater and oven. The guys were all very courteous and professional. Jennifer was great to deal with concerning scheduling and all of the other office stuff. I can't recommend these guys enough. read more

We were having major problems with our both our furnace and our air conditioner. Ben's gave us a very reasonable estimate, so we went with them. We were so glad we did, because our system had some very strange aspects, and they analysed the problems thoroughly, and brought in several specialists to make sure they understood the problem. They installed the new system and fixed the duct problem we had. Even after that, they came back when we suspected our ducts were harboring dust. They came back and hand vacuumed each duct, and checked to make sure every thing was working well. They took the job very seriously and did not just stop once the system was in. They followed up and made sure everything was working perfectly. The guys who came and worked were all very pleasant and took their job seriously. I would recommend Ben's to anyone. read more

We had a problem with our heat pump and a technician from Bens came. At first he wasn't very "people friendly" so we left him on his own. He proceeded to tell us our compressor was shot and we needed a new pump. Seeing that's in the thousands of dollars we got a second company to give us a bid and lo and behold we were only low on Freon and it's working fine for only a couple hundred dollars and no trip charge (Bens charges $149 to diagnose). Would have only given one star but the tech turned out to be a pleasant and friendly young man. read more

The repairman they sent was polite and professional and was able to quickly diagnose the issue as the controller board. This place had such good reviews, both from Yelp and from my neighborhood facebook page. Given that, I was really disappointed. I called them one morning about an HVAC service I wanted. They were so abrupt and dismissive! They said they didn't do the type of work I was seeking. That's fine, but they were not polite about it. A few days later, my HVAC problem had changed, and I needed a different type of service. I knew this was the type of work Ben's DID do. I thought, maybe they were dismissive the other day because they didn't do the type of work I was seeking. Maybe I should give them another try, now that this a service they actually do. Wrong. They were dismissive and rude again. This time, they told me (abruptly, with great apathy) they could do the job if I were willing to wait They were really booked out, it seems. Hey, I'm glad they are so popular and have lots of other jobs. It seems pretty clear they are too busy to need or want my job. So I called another company, who seemed more interested in my HVAC problem and gave me some great advice and suggestions. read more

Jack came out and gave an estimate, except he wanted the gas line outside the wall. I tried to follow up and see if he would install the line inside the wall, but no return call after multiple voice mails and an answering service message. Had an appointment with one of Ben's estimators for an AC & Furnace install. The estimator arrived on time & was very professional. He asked questions about my ac & furnace needs and checked out all the existing equipment & vents. He took considerable time to explain in layman terms all the aspects involved with the install. He explained his recommendations & crunched the numbers on the spot. I was very impressed with his thoroughness. I decided to go with another company for the install due to a difference in pricing. However, Ben's is an authorized Bryant dealer and offers several affordable plans for annual maintenance that others don't. Before I have any maintenance, I will definitely consider Ben's as an option due to their excellent customer service, professionalism and attention to detail. read more

Ben's came out and fixed the bad installation on our furnace (not done by them!). The corrected the vent to the proper size and it works like a champ. We put a new paver patio behind the house and needed the heat pump moved to a different location on short notice. The were completely full, but jumped through hoops to get it done. I had an appointment for routine furnace maintenance with time range from 1-4. Tech came at 4:30 and franc was working. After some "adjustements" and calls to his supervisor, now furnace is not working, it is after 5 and they will not send anyone out till tomorrow. I got apologies from the supervisor and he said they would contact me tomorrow. I have calls into 3 other businesses that offer emergency services and hope I get heat tonight. I will not have Ben's work on my furnace any more for maintenance or other wise. I want heat not an apology. read more

I gave Ben's a call to hook up my AC system, they came out when it was convenient for me, looked at my system and gave me a bid to finish up the work that was started by someone else. The bid was fair, I gave them a call to schedule the work, and they fit me right in. The technician called the morning of the installation asking if he could get an earlier start because his earlier appointment was quicker than anticipated. When he left the work area was cleaner than he arrived. It is clear Ben's is more concerned about getting and keeping customers, than just selling you something. read more

I have used Ben's Heating & AC for many years, but this last visit was over the top. We had a gas line installed in our new place for our dryer. Once the line was installed it was a week or so before we put the dryer in. My husband tried to get the dryer to fit behind our bi-fold doors and could not. (He's an aspiring handyman, but couldn't figure it out) After the dryer sitting outside of the doors for a few weeks, I finally called Ben's and talked to them about it. I spoke with Clyde, the owner, and he offered to come take a look. He showed up and had it all fixed in five minutes! And wouldn't charge us for the service call! So awesome! Awesome people to deal with. Our 22 year old heat and cool system finally died on us. Ben's ( Family owned ) offered an air conditioner and furnace of higher quality at a more reasonable price over their competition. Very professional sales associate, the installers arrived exactly as scheduled with all the proper equipment, installed the entire system, replaced some ductwork under the house without leaving a single trace they had been here, and provided excellent follow up. Our house has remained at it's set temperature day/night, hot/cold since and I have not once heard the equipment turn on. Ben's has taken the time to select quality equipment, hire train and retain quality individual who are committed to providing a quality service. This is a company like they used to be when I was a young man, earning their reputation by preforming above the required standards. My grandparent are in their 80's, their heater was no longer turning off when the temperature on the thermostat was reached. They called Bens and had a service technician come out to diagnose the issue. After a short time and a phone call he decided it was a sequencer that needed replacing. That visit cost $150.00. Today 2 weeks later a service technician named Justin came out to replace the part, I happened to be home and just sat back and observed, he took the panel off the furnace, removed some things that were in the way, went out to his van quite a bit, stared at his phone on their porch for awhile, replaced the part and checked that it worked, talked to my grandfather for about 15 minutes gave him the bill and left. Total time at the house 8am to 9:05. Total cost $500.00! Well he was nice enough to lower it to $470.00... So they are into this for $620.00!!! So naturally I get online to see what a sequencer is, for all I know it's a 300 dollar part. The highest price I can find is 40 dollars for one, most cost 10-20, also a 13 minute YouTube video showing a novice how to replace it, basically it's a small fuse/ circuit with about 6 wires that plug into it. I called them up to voice a little bit of my concern, because near as I can tell between their first and second visit they only did maybe an hour of actual work, and less then $60.00 dollars in parts (I'm being generous). I spoke on the phone with Dana and she informs me that what they charged is "market value", for the service they just provided and that they are an honest family owned business. Basically the nice way of saying we don't care, please go away now. I have managed businesses and I understand overhead and markup and paying costs the consumer never sees or understands. But no matter how high I inflate the numbers of the service they just provided, it's ridiculous. My grandfather is a nice man who would've paid $3000.00 if someone told him that's what it cost. I don't care about "fair market value" nobody wants to undercut and lower the value of a service, I get it. But when your service is ripping people off have the integrity to go against the market and do what's right. I'm not saying don't make a profit, I'm just saying you took advantage of an elderly couple to keep prices high on services that should be a whole hell of a lot less. Good thing your family owned. Your not the first company to do this to them, happens all the time! Your not special your just like the rest. Well except the pest control guy, $150.00 he will clear your vents, climb under the house, set traps and come back to clean them for no extra. That's a man that doesn't hang around and chat much, to busy making an honest living. Have a nice day! This is something of a mixed bag review. Our furnace went out a couple of days ago and, it being January, we want to get it fixed asap. A few years back I called Ben's for a repair and they were timely, professional, and gave us a great and lasting fix - so I called them again. This time around, the technician (again timely, professional and kind) looked at the furnace and told me it could be fixed but that it would cost us over $700 because the parts are hard to come by. Because it is old and clearly near the end of its life, he recommended just looking at a new unit. He left me with a few quotes that are in line with industry standard. He didn't charge me for the service call. All these are plusses - and the fact that we need to replace the furnace soon is absolutely true. The thing I struggle with is that after he left, I looked up the serial number of the parts we need to fix the current unit and I was able to locate them for $100 (with shipping). I had them expressed to our house, my husband installed them, and we were up and running in 15 minutes. I feel like the $750 estimate (and oh by the way they were booked out and couldn't do the repair for at least several days) was therefore a little disingenuous. It may be that they have to source their parts through a contracted parts dealer - and that may dictate their pricing structure. It would have been helpful though if he had told us we might have more affordable options. We will look at a new unit in the spring. That way we can do our research, get a few quotes, possibly a manufacturer's rebate, and in general be more thoughtful about our purchase. It's not cool to feel forced into a mid-winter furnace purchase just because we're cold. read more
