what a lovely group of people on a much needed, noble mission to make our world a better place…read more i stumbled upon james recycling depot on happenstance. like many of my neighbors and friends of the planet, my family and i have taken many steps to cut down on the waste we generate. and while we've strived to cut down on as much plastic as possible, plastic is so gnarly and ubiquitous that we inevitably have had a stash of styrofoam (ugh!) and some #2 small plastic vitamin bottles. enter the wonderful humans at James recycling depot! this weekend, i decided its time to finally tackle the pile and find a place to responsibly (as much as we can) give a second life, hopefully. james, 27 years old and on the autism spectrum is like me and you: we both have a deep passion for the environment and nerding out about recycling. at 17, james decided to collect plastic recycling from neighbors that wouldn't be accepted in commingled city recycling. fast forward to even talking with a local industrial plastic recycling company who made an exception to no household recycling after hearing about james and his story, the depot was born! in addition to styrofoam, james recycling depot takes hard plastics like clamshells, or even bread clips to lids, straws, contact lens blister packs and more! the key though is that items that are taken in our curbside are *not* accepted like cardboard or plastic film is not accepted (film is recycle+ or at drop offs at stores etc!) hours are on some weekdays, with a pop up event on a Saturday about once a month per what i gather. the website is definitely the place to know where to find the next collection event! there is a small cost to recycle some items like styrofoam (reasonable honestly: $10/45 gal bag) and plastics (a small box of supplement bottles ran us $1). card is accepted. i absolutely love that james provides employment and enrichment opportunities for individuals on the autism spectrum is so inspiring. also, i appreciate that you can reach out if reducing fees are an economic hardship. james recycling depot is a non-profit and donations are accepted. thank you, james and team! you all are incredible people.

The service is excellent and a good value. The volunteers are friendly and well organized with zones for different types of plastic. And the business was started by a person on the Autism Spectrum. As a parent of an adult child with autism, I know the struggles faced with employment and independent living. It warms my heart seeing James following his passion while doing good for the community and the environment. I used to have Ridwell collect recyclables at my home, but I didn't generate enough material to make regular collection worthwhile. James Recycling makes it easier for me to store items and drop them off when I'm doing another errand. I recently dropped off a mountain of Styrofoam (filled my trunk and back seat). They quickly got me checked out for about $12, despite it being busy with multiple customers waiting. Nobody waited very long. It was faster than checking out at the grocery store.

I arrived at 5:02pm to find the gate closed and the staff at the gate turned me away. Her response was to come back the next day at 8am (when I'm working). I under stand operation hours, however the rigidity displayed by the staff was unhelpful given the small size of the load I was trying to deposit (a single couch). I'm sure there were still other customers inside at the time. The hours of operation are ridiculous as well. It is a disservice to customers for the waste station to have traditional banker's hours and not have alternate hours available during the week. These hours conflict with the availability of most working customers.

Upon inspection of my junk pile, I was quoted $290 for 1/4 of the truck and I got $20 off for online scheduling. So, $270 total. It's not cheap, but it's worth it. The 2 men worked hard and loaded up my crap in about 10 minutes before taking payment (they accept card) and leaving. The whole process was so simple and fast. My entire turn around was about 3 hours from logging onto their website to them driving off with my junk. Thank you Rubbish Works!

Both times, the drivers showed up unprepared for the job even though I left very detailed descriptions of what I needed taken away in their online scheduling form. Both times, they informed me that their truck was already mostly full and they couldn't fit all the stuff in there and they wanted to be able to bring another guy to help them. The first time, for the hot tub, I did accept their offer to reschedule because we had no ideas on other ways to dispose of this hot tub that no longer worked and a few other companies had refused to take. The guys did not seem very happy about having to take apart the hot tub and hauling it away even though the fee I was charged was really high, but I couldn't really blame them because I did not want to do it either. Today, the driver was not able to reschedule me while he was here and told me the office would give me a call sometime today to set something up for later. He then told me that I should just rent a dumpster and load it all up myself. Again, I got the clear impression that he did not want to come back and load up my rubbish pile. I wish I had known I would be having this experience again because I would have called another company to rent a dumpster prior to starting our demolition project and garage clean out. Thinking I would be able to have Rubbishworks pick it up on our scheduled appointment, we worked as hard as we could over the weekend to get it all together in a nice pile in our driveway to make it easier on them today. Lesson learned. The dumpster has been ordered and will be here in a couple of days for half the price.

Alterations nightmare. I asked for a simple shortening of plain pants with no complexity. When I…read morearrived to pick them up the work was totally unacceptable. The hem was not even. The front of each leg was one height and the back of each leg was , I kid you not, three inches longer. I showed the pants to the owner and she commented that it was done that way to compensate for the "lift" that occurs with the curve of the butt. I told her had never owned pants built like that, and had not asked for anything more than shortening of the hem. I told her to send it back for correction. She reluctantly took the pants. When I went back to get the pants, they were still uneven and too long. I left in disgust. She seemed unconcerned that they failed to respond to my request for even hems on each leg. To top it off they are pricy- their work is nothing special.

This morning, my 5yo grandson and I went in to see if the sweet lady who deals with alterations could 1) repair a tear in the corner of his elephant lovie, and 2) have it ready before closing since this child has never slept without his very worn and beloved Elephant. When we walked in 15 minutes early this afternoon, she was waiting at the counter, holding up Elephant. She'd even taken out my very poor hand stitching from an initial repair attempt months ago and sewed it up nicely. There's one very happy little boy in Cedar Mill, OR who will sleep well tonight, snuggled with his beautiful and beloved Elephant.
