Have been a diner here since early 2000s when I was a grad student in the area. Food was excellent then-always flavorful and fresh. Best American Chinese food in the area. Not so any more. Ordered my usual, Sweet and Sour Chicken with fried rice and egg drop soup recently. Such a disappointment! The rice was soggy, the egg drop soap tasted like slightly salty water and the chicken was average at best. They are cutting corners and it is showing. Food was super great but not worth the money. What they won't tell you is they charged 15% service fee of party of 4 and under. We were a party of 3 and all paid separately but yet they still charged us. I don't mind this but server gave an OKAY service. We felt rushed and honestly he wasn't friendly at all. My family and I had Easter lunch here with friends. I wanted hibachi but the rest of my party wanted sushi so we didn't sit at the "show" table and chose a standard table. When we were ready to order, I was told by the server and a manager that although the hibachi table was 5 feet from me that my plate couldn't be made and brought to me. So I had to order something else. I don't eat sushi so I had limited options and I had chosen the restaurant based on the fact they they have sushi and hibachi. Very disappointing. I am giving 3 stars because my family enjoyed their sushi. I also didn't like that they added a 20% tip as the server came back one time to refill water and that's it. The food at the Orient Express is inconsistent. I've had 2 star, 3 star and 4 star experiences. When it's good it's really good and when it's bad, well, you know. 3 Stars. We ordered lunch delivery today. They have about 38 entrees on their Lunch Menu so you should find something you like. Most lunch items are $8.50 and include soup or salad, fried rice and an egg roll. (Soup/salad are not included for take out or delivery) The food arrived hot and fast. I'd estimate the size of their Lunch entree is about 1/2 of what you get at Dinner -which is reflected in the price. We got our favorites, Mongolian Chicken and Mongolian Beef. Both were tasty but here's were the inconsistency part comes in again. The Mongolian Chicken was really good with the right amount of onions, meat and sauce. The Mongolian Beef was a whole other story. It was greasy, loaded with tons of green onions and had a minimal amount of beef. The lackluster 'fried rice' that comes with it is not the same as their delicious entree fried rice. I know the food is inconsistent but I keep ordering from here. My boyfriend brought me here for my birthday dinner and we honestly had an amazing experience. I try to selectively give out 5 stars, but i think orient is deserving! Disclaimer: we ate a ton of food but also had almost 2 meals of leftovers when we went home! We got crab angels, spring rolls, a sushi roll (the atomic bomb), my bf got the walnut shrimp and i got the tangerine chicken. All were SO GOOD! Seriously, no complaints. The tangerine chicken had quite a red chile pepper kick to it and the sweet flavor to it was a perfect balance. I have ordered and picked up lunch from here often but had never actually eaten inside the dining cars. Boy was I missing out as the decor and service were fantastic. The restaurant actually consists of actual restored train cars which are divided into 3 areas- Hibachi, Sushi and Japanese. We opted for the Hibachi grill so we sat in that area but the Hostess quickly offerred sushi menus letting us know we could order off any of the 3 menus. After being seated quickly and looking over the menu, I ordered the Chicken & Shrimp Hibachi which comes with soup, salad & elected to upgrade to fried rice (pretty standard stuff). My companion had the Lobster & Steak Hibachi with the same. Satisfied with our choices we ordered up a bottle of Plum wine & eagerly waited. The Chicken was juicy and flavorful and my shrimp was cooked just right. The steak was actually cooked medium just as orderered and whatever spices he used as seasoning were right on point. Particularly refreshing was all the tricks our cook did while preparing the meals. Lately it seems your lucky if you get the "egg roll" trick, especially when there is a table full of adults, but this guy really showed out. He threw balls of rice at everyone and we caught them in our mouths, we sang, he did the smoking volcano trick but added a twist by lighting the air on fire which fed the volcano (onions) to erupt. All this happened just as the real train came rumbling by (live train tracks run just behind the restaurant causing it to shake just a bit SOOO COOL !) Horrible experience. Went for a early dinner with my family to celebrate recent accomplishments - wow we should've picked anywhere else to go! Overpriced & HORRIBLE customer service is an understatement $50 for three rolls of sushi- only one was good. we arrived early originally sat in the sushi section because we had a few minutes to wait for them to set up the hibachi area. The waitress knew we were waiting on hibachi, so when we wrapped up the sushi we simply were taking our drinks walking six steps over to the hibachi table when our waitress literally took my families drinks away as we were simply going to carry them over to the other section- she was trying to recharge $3 per drink again for drinks I ALL READY PAID FOR. Literally, she snatched my kids drinks and told us no were not permitted to bring our drinks from six steps away that I all ready paid for! I have never heard of anything like this. Their menu for hibachi does not include that you will be charged an additional $4 for fried rice with your hibachi dinner-so they expect you to pay $30 and then additionally $4 for fried rice. Nowhere else I have ever visited has ever not included fried rice in the cost of hibachi dinner. Then wait it gets worse!! They added $16 tip to my check when we had a party of 4. Nothing on their menu says a party of 4 will have gratuity added. The group next to us was 6 ladies no gratuity added! Fellow customer showed me their bill!! Why do that to me and add a tip illegally to my check!? Hmmm!!? I called her out and she still added $10 from thin air to the check!! BUYER BEWARE!! This is my favorite Chinese restaurant in Atlanta. Despite not being here in a few years, it did not disappoint. If you don't know, this restaurant isn't just a Chinese restaurant. They also have a sushi section and a Japanese tepanyaki (hibachi) section. Adding to the ambiance is the fact that part of the restaurant is in old train cars. And, for the first time ever, I actually sat on the patio which is very cute. I can tell it's a step above most Chinese restaurants when the fried noodles they bring are actually crunchy and don't seem like stale leftovers from days ago. I pretty much always order the same thing, Mongolian beef with steamed rice, and hot and sour soup. They have some of the best hot and sour soup I have had. In fact, I upgrade my soup to a larger version; it's that good. The Mongolian beef is excellent. If you have never had it, it's a fantastic dish for those that don't like to explore foreign cuisine. If that's you and you end up at a Chinese restaurant, give that dish a try. Just don't expect it to be as good as Orient Express'es. Last, I want to point out how good their crab angels are. They are loaded with cream cheese filling and actually have detectable crab in them. I went fishing in one looking for crab and found a lump about the size of two corn kernels. These aren't the cheap kind. If you find yourself in Vinings looking for something different, good, or unique, give the Orient Express a try. I do have one tip for management though. If I owned a restaurant, it would be a policy that servers are not allowed to take your glass until AFTER bringing you a new one, rather than taking your glass and refilling it. Today, the server took my glass to refill it but got snagged by another table and spent a few minutes taking their order. I went here on a Friday night for hibachi. The parking lot was packed at 7:30. The restaurant has three areas each for hibachi, Chinese, and sushi. We didn't wait long for a table even though it was pretty busy. The waitstaff cycle people through very fast. Appetizers we're served within 5 minutes of being seated. Dimsum soup was flavorful but still just ok. Appetizer salad was uneventful. I had hitachi fried rice with chicken/shrimp. The chef was mildly entertaining. The portions were big enough that everyone had a to go box. The food was pretty good, I would have loved a dash of old bay on my shrimp, but still pretty good. Meal costs were between $20-40 per plate which is not too bad for dinner. We were in and out in less than an hour. I would have liked to slow down my Friday evening meal a bit but it's hibachi and to be expected. Overall I would go back and check out the sushi. I went back to try Chinese. Foods pretty good here. Had the general chicken (like general tso) it wasn't too spicy and was good! The chicken was actually good quality. The fried rice was delicious too. I recommend getting your rice on a separate plate if you don't want too much sauce getting in it. The beef with brocolli is also good there. I love this place. The food is great and you can choose between the Chinese food side of the restaurant or the Japanese hibachi side. I enjoy a simple Philly roll but I also enjoy their hot and sour soup as well as their hibachi fried rice. The restaurant is clean and the service is very good. The price is a little more expensive than your average sushi restaurant but it's worth it. I order the Philly Roll and the hibachi fried rice. One thing I don't particularly like is that you can't order hibachi in the restaurant part, only the grill. The ambiance is great for dates and even families. My husband and I went with our 1 year old daughter and they were super accommodating and service was fast. The servers and hostesses were all really nice and welcoming. We went during peak dinner hours on a Saturday night and we were able to find parking without an issue and got seated pretty immediately. They have 3 different dinner options; sushi, Chinese and hibachi, we opted for the Chinese, as it's wait time was the shortest. The food was hot and fresh and the portions were sizable. We had the shrimp and scallop fried rice (they could stand to be more generous on the amount of shrimp and scallops used in the rice) and general tso chicken which was spicy and delicious. Although you can order from either room, this place is very appropriate for a date, a business meeting or girls night. The prices are moderate but well worth the taste. On this visit we ordered a shrimp fried rice, miso soup, spider roll, super crunch, Georgia roll, bubba grump, and philly roll. I suggest them all.
