Orient Express is an intimate cocktail bar kind of tucked away on a side street in the West Village. We walked in on a quiet Thursday night and snagged seats at the bar, which is pretty tiny. There's some table seating available as well. My friend originally just wanted a soft drink but they have this rule where if you don't order anything or don't want alcohol, they charge you a $20 cover. I can understand having that on busy weekends but for that to be an all the time policy feels unreasonable. And it's also insensitive to people who are sober or who just don't feel like drinking that evening. They have a small menu of light bites. The cheese plate looked good but it's expensive at $35. We didn't order any food. We each had a glass of wine and the wine was pretty expensive too. $20 a glass, which is more than some of the cocktails. Service was decent. Despite the bar being slow, and sitting right at the bar, the bartender was not as attentive as he could have been. This could also be bc I saw him making drinks for the neighboring bar, Turks and Frogs and sliding them through an open slot that connects both bars. Overall I think Orient Express is a nice bar to have an intimate date or a lowkey night with a friend, as long as you manage expectations for their policies and prices. read more

Popped into this charming little cocktail bar on Saturday night a little after 6pm and they were able to seat all 8 of us at a table (even though everyone wasn't even there yet - bonus points!). Within 15 minutes the place was packed! We made it just in time. The menu features many unique cocktails. First round I had athe Coco Gimlet ($18) made with Coconut Oil Washed Gin, Fresh Lime Juice, and Simple Syrup. It was unique and I really enjoyed it. One person at our table had the Espresso Martini. We all tried it and loved it so much that the next round was 8 Espresso Martinis, and I swear they are hands down the best in NYC. We even asked for their recipe. ***4 1/2 stars*** Let me start off by saying that stereotypes are wrong. That said, if I see a bearded guy behind the bar wearing either a plaid shirt or a tie, I'm feeling pretty good about my chances of getting a decent cocktail. And this place has both of them in spades. I stopped by here after work on Friday with my Old Man Chum for two cocktails on a very pleasant early fall evening with a slight nip in the air. The Old Man had walked by before and liked the look of the place, and I have to share those sentiments for sure - it feels like an antique store in many ways. We didn't spend a ton of time indoors other than to request outdoor seating and take a bathroom break, but neither of us would have had an issue hanging out in there for the duration of our adventure. The outdoor seating though had prime pooch viewing right by the sidewalk, which you just can't beat regardless of the interior design. I had time in the afternoon to intently study the cocktail menu and ultimately chose The Commuter ($17), featuring gin, cocchi rosa and yellow chartreuse. Orient Express very helpfully provides a taste/palate description of each cocktail next to the ingredient list, which every place should do - it's definitely a big part of how I ultimately arrived at my decision. (And as an aside, if someone had provided a description of the negroni I sampled recently and alerted me to the fact that they tasted like leather suitcases, I wouldn't have gone near it and saved myself the trouble. It's basically a public service.) This particular cocktail was described as boozy, floral and herbal, and it was ALL of those things. I ended up having two of these, and a third would have gotten me into a lot of trouble. I'm not typically an advocate for a cocktail that's more than $15, but if you're going to spend that kind of money, you should be able to appreciate/distinguish multiple layers of flavors, which is certainly the case here. You can tell that the bartender/mixologist knew what they were doing when they prepped it, and that the bar manager or whomever designed this drink did so with care. There's a lot of subtlety and attention to detail, and I'd definitely advocate thoughtful sips versus casual gulps. The service was fine. Your mileage may vary on this, but when we got there it looked like the bartender inside was literally the only one handling drink orders for all tables including the outdoor area. We were seated quickly and provided with menus at the time, but after 10 minutes or so went by without a visit, I had to go inside to give our orders. Not a huge deal, and it wasn't difficult to hail him down behind the bar to do so, but overall we had to be a bit more proactive than I think you'd ideally want to be. It's also a chill cocktail bar in the West Village so there's arguably a hands-off cultural vibe there as well. Definitely would come by again, though I wouldn't recommend doing so on an empty stomach. read more

I live in the neighborhood and have never left a Yelp review before, but this place requires a real warning. You may have a decent experience here or you very well could not - the issue is that if it's bad, it's really bad. I'm not sure if it's a particular bartender or a wider issue with the staff, but the service can turn incredibly aggressive and rude at the drop of a hat. I had gone several times before because it is one of the few bars around here that doesn't get crazy packed, but now I understand there might be a reason for that. The most recent (and last) time I went there, I actually felt so bad about how someone in my group (a young woman) was treated that I sent an apology text for suggesting to go there. Let's just say a staff member wouldn't stop harassing her for the entire night after she said hello to a friend at the bar. I guess they were mad at her for "inviting" him while we were at a table? She didn't but it's also a public place that anyone can enter so it was all the more confusing. I hate to leave a negative review especially for a local business, but I just don't want anyone else's night to be ruined unnecessarily. If you do go and they start treating you poorly, just leave. The location is narrow and does give the feeling of sitting at tables on a train's dining car. There's a campy yet elegant interpretation of the Orient Express with an allusion of souvenirs derived from an early explorer's travels. The bar is lively, but capacity was well managed to make for an enjoyable experience. Our waiter was very welcoming and provided alternative suggestions of something we wanted wasn't on the menu. The range of cocktails are adventurous and surprising with aromatics, some smoky, some sweet. You can get a gin cucumber drink that's got depth and spice to it. I used to love this bar and then made this mistake of coming here when the bartender with black curly hair was behind the bar. My girlfriend and I had plans to spend most of the night there but after accidentally knocking over a glass of water, which broke, the bartender closed out our check and asked us to leave. I've had this place bookmarked for a while but a dealist deal for 2 cocktails and a chocolate plate finally gave me the excuse to check it out. My friend and I came on a Monday night so it was empty. There were a couple of people who came in after we did then before we left a small group sat at the bar. I'm not entirely sure if it was because it was a Monday night or because people just prefer the more known Turks and Frogs next door. The space is very nice. It's decked out with the trappings of a train car, complete with old school luggage on overhead shelves. The background music is very old school as well and with the dim lighting it's a great little romantic date spot. 5 stars for the setting and accessibility. The drinks are very well-crafted. $12-$16 so a tad pricey. We tried the Sleeping Car and the Herkules. Both very good but if you're not one for strong drinks stay away from the Sleeping Car. 4 stars for the drinks. All in all it's a great romantic bar that's hidden and not crowded. I was worried about showing up in converse sneakers based on my friend's past stories. But the place was more casual than I expected. I walked in and the bartender immediately said hello and gave me enough space to settle in. I grabbed a table by myself and enjoyed the light music and conversation of the couple besides me. I had two drinks. The Last Stop, which has Gin, St Germain and some lime and ginger. It was a pretty straight forward drink. It wasn't until I had a chocolate bourbon drink that I really was like, "Hot damn." It's a nice and quiet -- out of the way cocktail bar. We left immediately not wanting to give this bar our money. We went to the neighboring bar and he FOLLOWED us in and proceeded to disrespect my friend for no clear reason. We left that bar. This bartender (short hair with a short beard) has no respect for people. We were respectful as can be and were met with a degree of hostility I've never experienced in nyc having lived here for over 5 years.
