I really enjoyed Mace, for both the drinks and the food menu. They're known for their cocktails, but I wasn't adventurous on this visit so I stuck to an old fashioned, which was very good. Their signatures all sound interesting, I already know I'll have to come back and try some on a future visit. In terms of food, the tuna tartare was very good! The tuna tasted fresh and the seasoning was more than a citrus overload, it had some balance to the flavor. The corn cheese with chips was a bit on the salty side, but still hit the spot with how creamy and hearty it was. And their take on chicken satay was the best dish (not pictured; I ate it too fast), really great blend of flavors that made me wish for more than two skewers. My friends and I stopped by Mace for a quick drink and we were pleasantly surprised. The decor and the ambience of the restaurant is really nice. When you first walk in the host greeted us and we were seated right away. We ordered a Caesar salad, a fruit plate and a few drinks. For drinks we got two Habanero and a Rose. The drinks were good definitely a 8.5 out of 10. If you have a gluten allergy one thing to consider is that they don't really have that many gluten free options. Still just as great as my first time! Since my first visit, I have never forgotten this gem of a place. During an amazing date night on a Saturday in July, we spontaneously stopped by for drinks. We stopped in minutes to midnight for a quick bite and unique drinks. Upon arriving, we were warmly greeted by the hostess. The place was bustling but we managed to get a table. The beauty of the establishment was just as I remembered. It was dimly lit with amber colored lighting by the bar while the vibe remained intimate and soft. I loved it! To my surprise, Mace offers a late night menu from 10pm-1:30am. It features a small selection of snacks. The general menu seems to have changed since my first visit and I also noticed some changes to the drink menu. Change is good in this case, because seemed unique and appetizing. We decided to start our night with the jumbo shrimp cocktail. The menu boats this as 3-pieces of "Jamaican spiced pepper shrimp". My boyfriend and I are Jamaican, so we were very excited for this. We even asked the waitress how spicy it was and she raved that it was "very spicy", almost like a warning. When it arrived to our table, we laughed. It was nowhere near spicy nor was it even halfway close to being Jamaican style peppered shrimp. What we received was traditional cocktail shrimp with a sauce that had a slight spice to it. We were not bothered but rather entertained. For drinks, I had a parsley drink while my boyfriend had the "Spruce". Both were visually pleasing. My drink was refreshing but left me wanting more and something sweeter. My boyfriend loved his drink and I was jealous because it looked better than mine. The little sip he offered me was also tasty. After we completed our drinks and food, we stayed around and chatted until the establishment closed. The staff were very kind and let us enjoy our experience without interruption. In terms of pricing, it is on the higher side. The drinks are worth it, but the shrimp is overpriced. At $18 for 3 pieces and such a mediocre taste, it was overpriced in my opinion. Our server was amazing and let us sample some drinks and asked me questions about my personal preferences before choosing one for me. Pandan (6.7/10): This is the only frozen cocktail they offer so I was naturally very intrigued. It uses Pandan liqueur, absinthe, coconut, avocado and other fruits. While I love the taste of pandan, I feel like it was strongly overpowered by the flavor of the absinthe (which tastes like black licorice/star anise). Not my favorite but still fun to try Licorice (7.7/10): This is a whiskey based cocktail with pandan liqueur, banana, caramel, and licorice-miso, and carbonation! Very fun. Not a super strong banana flavor but I did get some underlying sweetness (perhaps from the caramel?). I enjoyed this drink Tarragon (8.5/10): My favorite cocktail I tried! It's vodka-based with St. Germain, pear cider, and prosecco. Very delicious and refreshing. Perfectly sweet! I highly recommend this if you like fruitier/sweeter drinks. Amazing complex cocktails with an artistic and aesthetic menu! I came with a friend on a Tuesday night around 8 pm and it was pretty busy! We were fortunately able to be seated right away at the bar (beautifully backlit). The vibe is lively but comfortable. The friendly bartender quickly answered questions about the menu and took our order. I got the Curry Leaf drink (whiskey-based with notes of honeydew, cucumber, and clarified soy milk), and my friend got the Pandan (bourbon, burnt butter, pandan, wood bitters). The Curry Leaf drink is refreshing thanks to the cucumber and fruity notes, but interesting spices and a kick from the curry leaves. The Pandan was my favorite between the two though- alcohol-forward with warm flavors, and an incredible aftertaste of pandan. While keeping in mind reservations can be hard to come by at times, we learned this past weekend that Sunday early evenings aren't super busy. We got two spots at the bar and, as a pre-dinner appetizer, tried a few cocktails and some oysters. The cocktails: Black Sesame: made with shochu, gojuchang, soy sauce, black sesame syrup, black garlic, and cucumber - ...wait, what??! Yes, really, and somehow it all works nicely together with a unique taste that still feels balanced. And no, this isn't an Udon bowl - it's a cocktail. Avocado Leaf: tequila, mezcal, coconut orgeat, Grand Marnier, lime, and morel juice - is very refreshing, and reminded me of a margarita meets piña colada We also got a dozen oysters - and while their food menu is limited, it was definitely not an afterthought. I only came for drinks so I can't speak on the food, but I tried the rosemary drink and their signature mace drink. The 2 drinks I ordered were good. I liked the rosemary the best. The only downside is that the menu is seasonal and changes every few months so if you have a favorite today it won't be back on the menu once it's been switched out. The rosemary was very refreshing. Not what I expected from the ingredients listed on the cocktail, but it was really light and a good cocktail that could prob pair well with whatever meal. The mace was also good but it's extremely beet focused. If you like beets you will like this drink, it's good to try, but I don't think I could drink more than if these in one seating. Walking in, you're greeted by the main bar area with a few tables off to the side, with additional tables in the back. The decor was upscale but not standoffish, we were seated by the fireplace which made for a very cozy aesthetic. Cocktails are the star of the menu, though they do have a selection of small plates as well. Browsing the menu, I noticed that instead of clever names, all the cocktails were named based off the dominant herb/spice in the drink. I decided to start with the Vanilla which was sweet, rich, and smooth - all of the flavor components worked well together. I also had the Turmeric which wasn't as heavy, but instead had more fruit notes in addition to ginger. This was really good as well - smooth and almost refreshing. Service was good, our server was very friendly and made great suggestions. Overall, I had a wonderful first experience at Mace - the cocktails are unique and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming; these are some of the more expensive cocktails I've seen in the city, but I feel it's worth it. Found this gem walking distance from Washington square park. Doesn't look like much from outside, however, when you go inside, it's dimly lighted and a cool long bar. The restaurant had a low key chill Vibe where you can grab a drink and a small bite. We had the pleasure of being served by bartenders Ben and Nico. They both made phenomenal drinks including Mace signature drinks and the classic old fashion. Nico made a whiskey smash for my friend and made me a great tasting, equally strong old fashion drink. Mace signature drinks are unique craft drinks from different places of the world which was really cool. I had the Avocado leaf, Coco nibbs and the Mace. They had oysters which were petite and shucked really well. One of the best, fresh tasting oysters hands down. In fact, this place was so good, we came back a second time the same day! The front section is a little more vibey than the back because if there becomes a line for the bathroom , it can extend into where people are sitting. So try to sit towards the front bar if you want the most romantic experience. Now for the drinks. Each drink felt like a meal. We tried 3 different ones from the menu , the mace, the tarragon, and the vanilla. All very VERY herbal and very VERY savory. I dont need the sweetest drink, but these border-lined snacks over sips. PANDAN - nice and not too sweet, does have the pandan running through at the finish. GARLIC DRINK - garlic not very prominent, but an enjoyable drink overall.
