I came here for an event. Having never been before, I was satisfied. The bar is nicely decorated with a large back room. I had a Tom Collins and it was good. Service was a bit scattered because the event was so large. I'd be interested to come back to see if service is better when there's not a 65 person event happening with just two servers. We had popcorn and olives to snack on, unsure if they have a larger food menu. The entrance can be hard to see as it is unmarked. So glad I got to try out this place. It's super hidden and definitely a speakeasy vibe underground and very pretty inside. They gave complimentary popcorn which was great. For my drink the bartender asked about my alcohol preferences and made me a drink he thought I'd like. It was amazing. It tasted almost like an orange soda and was so pretty. Walk along Lafayette Street in Soho and you may see a store front with no elaborate signage but instead a curious art design featuring what looks like a skeleton of a lizard. When you see this, you are looking at Temple Bar, a hidden gem! Walk inside and you're immediately greeted by a gorgeous Art Deco inspired interior. The bar is dark wood and lit *just* right to be comfortable and beautiful but not blinding bright or super dark. On busier times like a Friday night you may have a wait to get a seat at the bar, but I recently went on a Saturday afternoon around 4PM and my friend and I sat at the bar immediately. Off to the side is a small passage to the dining area where you'd sit if you are having a meal there - I have yet to do this. The hostess was very nice and patient as we decided which seats to take. Our bartender also absolutely rocked. I watched her work before we ordered and you can always tell when someone is confident and experienced and she made drinks like a pro. She was also kind enough to help me charge my phone a bit behind the bar which I really I appreciated (I was down to 10%!). My friend ordered the Blue Negroni (Gin, Blue Kampari, & blanc vermouth). I've had my fair share of Negronis in their time and I love their Earthy flavor, but this one was surprisingly bright when you first sip it but then the deeper flavor kicks in right after. It's really well done. I ordered the Satsuma (Japanese whisky, Nonino, curaçao, dry vermouth, & Angostura). I can't resist a Japanese whisky drink so this was a must and it was wonderful. The flavor came across as a variation of an Old Fashioned and I mean that as a compliment. A minor note: the bathrooms are nice and big and really well kept (including using Aesop soap, my favorite!). The wallpaper has a repeating Art Deco pattern, keeping the look consistent with the rest of the restaurant/bar. I really love Temple and hope it's around for a long time. Check it out! read more

The ambiance is beautiful. However, I can't comment on the drinks or food and the service is abysmal. I came in with a large group on a Tuesday. The bouncer at the door was extremely rude and condescending and stated that our male to female ratio was off and we could not come in. After several conversations, he finally let us in. We sat at the bar and were greeted by the bartender Q who was extremely dismissive. I would put in a drink order and he would service everyone around me, while ignoring my drink order. I was wary of coming here after reading quite a few negative reviews, but we really enjoyed our time here. Granted, we had an 8:45 reservation on a Wednesday night and did not initially encounter the bouncer that everyone has referenced in their reviews, though he was outside when we left around 11. The vibes were on point, the service was efficient, and the drinks were sophisticated and delicious. As I mentioned, we were here on the early side so when we arrived it was only about 1/3 or 1/2 full. By the time we left it was pretty packed, and I've heard it's definitely more a late night spot but still impressive that there's so much traffic on a Wednesday night. We both loved the decor, creative and classy, swanky lounge vibes. I'm a martini lover so, while all of the drinks looked amazing, I knew I'd regret it if I didn't take advantage of Temple Bar's martini menu. I'm very into savory drinks so two stood out to me and our server confirmed that they were both fantastic. To start, I had the Olive Oil Martini (2:1 Gin, olive oil washed dry and blanc vermouths, & olives), dirty-ish but super smooth and crisp. I then got the Salt & Pepper Martini (Gin, Manzanilla sherry, blanc vermouth, piment d'espelette, saline, & celery), which was such a treat because I've actually made this drink several times at home because the specs are up on Punch Drink. I've even made it for people who tend not to like martinis or feel they're too strong and even they like it, I think because of the gin-to-sherry ratio. I guess I'm confused by the business model. Three of us came in midday on a Saturday, expressly stating we were coming for one drink. There were ~10 available bar seats (of maybe 15 total). We were directed to two seats impatiently by a less than pleasant host saying "sorry we only can do two bar seats per group". Then immediately sat a group of 2 in between seats (effectively leaving one seat open). From the moment I walked in, every interaction I had with the employees was rude and unprofessional. One staff member in particular, who was flamboyant in manner, showed the worst hospitality I've ever experienced.  The bar area was also extremely tight. While I was simply trying to hand my friend her birthday flowers and take a quick photo, this man rudely told us to move and not block "his area." His approach was unnecessarily harsh and disrespectful. Then the same man, APPROACHED US asking if we wanted a table for our party, I told him hold on let me confirm the count, I briefly turned to count and within seconds, he gave the table away. When I turned back to let him know, he abruptly threw his hand up, said "I can't, I can't, give me a few", and walked away without even explaining that the table had already been given to someone else. Meanwhile, the person he gave it to, he was nicely asking them about their party and they weren't even all there at the moment to be seated. He dismissed us in a very cold matter, which didn't make sense. The bartender wasn't any better. A tall white man with glasses, he carried himself with a miserable attitude, no smile, no warmth, just cold stares that made guests feel unwelcome. If someone dislikes their job so much, they shouldn't be working in this type of atmosphere. The waitress with long black hair collecting drinks also carried the same rude energy. Telling us to move from her spot. Clearly, we selected the wrong spot to celebrate a birthday. To make matters worse, as I left with my husband, I overheard the flamboyant staff member and his friend making comments and laughing about us on the way out. That level of unprofessionalism is beyond unacceptable. People come here to enjoy themselves and spend their hard earned money, not to deal with rude, untrained, and miserable staff. I LOVE this place. I just hosted a tribute cocktail party there and the entire Temple Bar staff knocked it out of the park. From start to finish, everything was well-organized, welcoming, delightful, and delicious. With the help of Alexis (who made the whole process so fun and easy for me), I selected five passed canapés (Wagyu Cocktail Franks, Temple Fries, Mini Crab Cakes , Beef Sliders, and the most satisfying Mini Grilled Cheese of my lifetime). I custom-named four of Temple Bar's signature drinks (all mixed to perfection); selected a three-hour Spotify playlist; and chose special-photo matchbooks and cocktail napkins. To me, Temple Bar is a dark-and-beautiful bar with history, a place that feels luxe and relaxing at once. Whether you're throwing a big party, having a Vesper Martini (and popcorn) at the bar, on a date or with friends in the inner-sanctum lounge, I highly recommend Temple Bar to all and wish I could be there right now. read more

I don't even remember how the drinks were because the bouncer created the most hostile environment I've experienced at any bar ever. Me and four (white) girlfriends showed up to get drinks, got in with no questions asked. A little while later, two of my (non-white) friends showed up, and I got a text that the bouncer said I had to go get them. I thought this was weird, but went outside where I found the bouncer chastising my friends. The bouncer asked me if I had a reservation, and I said no. Again, this was confusing because, generally, I don't make reservations at bars and we weren't asked if we had one upon arriving. To this, the bartender responded that I can't just invite people to the bar without giving him a heads up and that I have no courtesy. I've been to MANY bars in my life and never had to give the bouncers a "heads up" when there are people coming. Maybe it was a NYC thing? I just moved here from CA so perhaps I didn't know. So I responded, "Isn't this a public bar, and anyone can come in?" which was a genuine question because I'd never experienced this before. At this point, the bartender got outright aggressive and told me I was being "nasty" and that my friends couldn't come in. As they got turned away, multiple (white) people were let into the bar, and not one of them was asked whether they had a reservation. The whole situation was truly humiliating and, again, SO CONFUSING. I went inside to finish my drink and tell my friends I was leaving, and a few minutes later, the same bouncer came inside and bumped into me and my friends in a very exaggerated way. He smelled very strongly of weed - no judgment, but it feels unwise if you take your job SO seriously that you're turning patrons away at the door. Look I'm no stranger to authoritative bouncers, but this was a man who towered at least a foot and a half over me calling me names and even making physical contact. After looking at the other reviews and seeing how people of color have been treated here, I understand what was actually happening with my friends. The bouncer/host that night was female and was super accommodating to seat us without reservations and to let me use the bathroom before the rest of my party arrived.
