I had my first experience at Oriental Wok this weekend. The atmosphere of the restaurant exceeded my expectations. It was big and authentically oriental inside. We attended a party so we were served a buffet style lunch. It was very good, but didn't blow me out of the water. I am sure their menu items would follow suit with the buffet food. Overall very good experience and the owner of the place had an outgoing colorful personality that really showed he loves what he does. For years I've touted Oriental Wok as the best Chinese-American restaurant in the Cincinnati area. But it seems they may have started cutting corners in a disappointing way. Yesterday my shrimp cheese roll had only a couple small fragments of shrimp. Portion sizes seemed to have shrunk. Worst of all, each entree came with only a smallish cup of rice, and the fried rice (which was no different from the white rice other than a smidgen of brown sauce) showed up on the check as a 50 cent upcharge. The check for 2 appetisers, 2 entrees, 1 cocktail and 1 iced tea came to $52. For less than half that you can buy essentially the same food from one of the better hole-in-the-wall places, like Peking Garden in Dillonvale. The ambience and service continue to be excellent, but at the end of the day it's really all about the food. I'm discouraged. read more

This is my grandmother's favorite Chinese restaurant for good reason! The appetizers are addicting and the atmosphere is definitely creative. I usually order the lemon chicken and it's delicious. We also went here on Christmas eve when they don't have their regular menu, which was pretty disappointing. Bonus star for the owner and his antics though. read more

Honestly the best sit down chinese joint I've ever been to. The decor is excellent. It almost belongs on the Vegas strip. Now the food is just as good. Their fried rice is super fresh and their meat and poultry is delicious. Their shrimp is plump and tasty and their soup is fantastic. 4 of us went and I had a taste of everyone's and I can honestly say all 4 dishes were quite tasty. If you're looking for somewhere better than just quick takeout this is it. Don't even think about that overrated Schnook of a restaurant P.F. Chang's for a second. This place seems much more genuine and fresh. Not some goofy overrated chain ordeal. All in all you're getting much better quality food than P.F. Chang's for the same price. Give this joint a go. Terrific. First time going there though my companion has been there many times. On a wet, dark rainy Thursday night the place was hopping. The server was attentive, friendly and did a terrific job for us. We shared a bottle of wine which we both liked. They give you these unbelievably crunchy, salty addictive little bites when you first sit down that you simply can't stop eating. My friend got Scallops and Eggplant which he very much enjoyed....I did too :o). I ordered the Orange Beef...good except for my tastes it was a bit too sweet with too much of an orange flavor. I wouldn't get that again but I so much liked everything else....we will be back and I'll order something else. read more

I ordered orange chicken and crab rangoons. The rangoons were crispy and not over-fried. What I like about their orange chicken is they use an assortment of vegetables as opposed to a big pile of syrup. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would give my food a 9. Will order again. read more

This is one of my favorite chinese restaurants in the united states, it could even hold its own with the ones in california. I did go back and forth on the star rating as I don't give out 5-star reviews easily or lightly. But my most recent trip (4 days ago) was fantastic so I decided to go with 5 stars. Further, and I'll put this in the top of the review since it's important to a lot of people but this place has a great beer menu. They don't have a ton of different beers but what they have are smart selections from a variety of different types. They have your standard bud light but then they also have beers like Green Flash IPA which is not commonly found in chinese restaurants. The owner told my dad (who is quiet a beer fanatic) that he has his son-in-law select the beers because he knows more about them than he (the owner) does. Smart man as his son-in-law has good taste. If you're looking for good chinese AND good beer then this place is definitely somewhere you should try. This place is not cheap although I would call it average and definitely worth it. I was surprised at the number of people complaining about the prices. The portions are HUGE and the quality is better than your average chinese place. Service is good and I like the decor even if it is a bit over the top. Perhaps if your goal is to get dinner as cheaply as possible this is not your place. But if you want to experience good chinese food it's definitely worth a try. Background/disclaimer: I do not live in the area so I don't know what else is out there instead my family makes a point to try and stop here every time we are driving by on I-75. We have been coming on and off for about 15-20 years but I do think it has gotten better in the past 2-3 years. I've had excellent chinese living in california for years and during 2 trips to China so I feel like I am a pretty good judge of Chinese food. This place is good, perhaps not equal to the experience in actual china but that's not a realistic expectation. This place does cater slightly to american tastes -being in the middle of kentucky what do you expect? Their dishes are not particularly spicy (which I personally like being a wimp in that department) but I am almost certain if you asked them to make it extra spicy they would be happy to accommodate you. Most recent visit: I went with my father and mother on a road trip and had a great experience. First they have these fried won-ton strips on the table that are very tasty. They have been salted and have another flavoring I am sure but I wasn't able to figure out what it was. So much better than your average fried crispy strips. t had a dish called "Pan Fried Noodles" with beef which I had never tried before and it was amazing. The beef was cooked perfectly, quite possibly the best I have ever had beef at a chinese restaurant cooked (including in china) and there were so many small details including slicing snow peas into thin strips, the bean sprouts were super fresh, noodles done just right, etc. I also had wonton soup which was very good as usual and a spring roll which was slightly over done and a tiny bit disappointing. My dad also had Moo Shu Pork which was excellent. I have had other trips there that are more "average", still decent and still worth the price in my mind but not quite as good. Another random point - their desserts are also very good. Not particularly authentic or chinese but delicious. Had a chocolate mousse this week which was awesome but I don't know that I would go there looking for chinese desserts as they are a fairly random mix and not particularly chinese-based. The food however though is and the owner is super friendly (and not at all creepy as one review might lead you to believe). read more

Love this place. It's always our go to when we're looking for a nicer food choice. However, I have ordered Mu Shu Pork take out from them twice and TWICE they have forgotten the pancakes that go along with the dish. Frankly, it's the most important part of the dish, and it's SO frustrating when it's forgotten. Food is USUALLY pretty great. If I had a choice for Chinese cuisine in an upscale environment I would choose this place everytime. They have featured offers each night and the standbys are great as well. I like to come here and order the grouper wrapped around asparagus with a light sauce. The Koi ponds are neat and this place is very enjoyable for a date or family dinner. The owner is always hospitable, always visible, always talks to you no mater who you are. This place was great. The wife got the General Wong's Chicken. I got the sweet and sour chicken. Both were excellent. The S & S chicken was fried perfect. Not overly crispy and still tender. The atmosphere and ambiance was nice. It was decorated tastefully without the requisite toy cat waving "hello" nearly all Chinese restaurants have. Great ambiance! This restaurant was originally built as a exquisite night club/restaurant The Excelsior back in the late 80's early 90's. It was supposed to compete against the likes of The Waterfront and The Conservatory and The Glass Menagerie. The latter two now closed. Once The Excelsior failed, the owner, Mike Wong, changed it into his other restaurant Oriental Wok. Good food, service and great atmosphere. You pay extra for the atmosphere. I have no idea how this place gets good reviews. The service was great, but the food was not at all good. We ordered a shrimp cream cheese roll that was so oniony that it wasn't edible. I guess the plus side was that the crispy wrapper was cooked to perfection. We also ordered the pepper steak and the sesame chicken. The pepper steak was so salty that you had to eat rice with each bite. The sesame chicken was coated in a thick, gloppy, overly sweet sauce that obscured the flavor of the vegetables. The plus side was that the chicken itself was cooked well, soft and succulent. I was really looking forward to eating here, since it has the reputation of the only good Chinese food in Cincinnati. We were so excited to hopefully experience some great Chinese food but, this place was a true disappointment. Walking into this restaurant I felt like I was walking back into time (1980's-90's). The food itself was nothing to rave about but, the experience itself was awful. I felt so bad for the servers because anytime the owner was present they would tense up. The owner was mingling around like he was some celebrity and it was truly bizarre! I felt like the prices were overpriced for the food and whole place was just a turn off. They are trying to be something they are not and are not adjusting or changing with the times! It was Friday so we had to have seafood/fish for dinner. My son picked Pan Fried Noodles with shrimp while my wife and myself picked from their "authentic Chinese menu" (which you have to sometimes request). We picked steamed fish (w/c was sea bass garnished with salmon and some veggies) and Gai lan (Chinese lettuce) for our veggies, and Mike Wong recommended a seafood soup which was sort of an egg drop soup with generous amounts of fish (i think it was sea bass), We enjoyed our dinner. I want to give them 3 and a half stars. The potstickers were so delicious, they disappeared in minutes. The server suggested the lo mein to me but I just wasn't a fan. It tasted a little bland; when I eat the leftovers I plan on adding some crushed red pepper to spice it up. Instead, I picked off my fiance's plate of General Wong's chicken. It had yummy, crisp, fresh vegetables. It was really good and I love that they use white meat chicken, but the menu said it would be spicy and I didn't taste any heat to it at all. The atmosphere is really nice and there is a beautiful chandelier and ponds with koi fish but I don't know that I can justify $15 per entree. I really want to like this place so I'm sure we will give it another try and just split one entree between the two of us. read more

This is the best Chinese restaurant that I have ever eaten at, and the Wong family is absolutely delightful. First and foremost, the food is terrific. This isn't your typical cheap Chinese that is homogenous across most of the sector. At the Wok you will get high quality meat, vegetables and house made sauces. We love the General Wongs Chicken, Sesame Shrimp and Sea Bass. The crab ragoons and egg rolls are the best on the planet as well. In addition to many fine meals, the family does a terrific job with large group events and has supported many charitable causes within the region. This is a can't miss restaurant in NKY. read more

I cannot say enough nice things about the Chinese Wok at Fort Mitchell. I come once a year with a large dog club that has a show at the nearby hotel. And every single year I visit this restaurant at least 2 times. Every single year it is the same. Great food, great service, friendly staff and outstanding decor. The prices are good. I come from the San Francisco Bay Area so if you local Cincinnati folks thinks the Wok has high prices, you might be a bit shocked to come to my part of the country. Their shrimp cracker appetizer is off the hook. These things are thick and full of shrimp. You definitely have to share with 4 friends since it is just so big. Stacked tall and on a plate that has sweet and sour sauce surrounding it. Yum! I am a creature of habit and have the steamed salmon every time I come. Over white rice and drizzled with teriyaki gel, it is awesome. I have to add that teriyaki is not on the menu for a way to present the salmon. But I ask for it specially and they do not even blink an eye. Every friend I come with orders something different and everyone loves their meals. The owner, Mr Wong, is hysterical. Does this guy ever have a bad day? I don't think so. He loves his restaurant and loves his clients. The place is amazing inside. Tall ceilings, wonderful decor and koi ponds that surround the patrons. The bathroom has a TV in it and there is a piano player there even during week days. I love this place !! read more

Tonight we were looking for good Chinese food, and we are SO happy we chose Oriental Wok! To start out, we got there a little late... 20 min before closing... and they seated us no problem. The service was wonderful! As we walk in we are greeted by a red and gold archway, and water features with koi swimming tranquilly. It is beautiful! The special "beer" was a ginger beer that was just fantastic, and the lychee martinis were to die for. The food was fantastic! The best eggrolls I've had in years. I'm a real pot sticker snob, and these were amazing! They have a special of two regular menu options with soup and choice of rice that is more than plenty for 1.5 people. My partner got the special of the evening (orange roughy rolled with shrimp and asparagus and steamed, then seared; served on a bed of wilted spinach with a mushroom broth that was deliciously earthy!). The owner of almost 40 years greeted us and chaufferred us through our meal. He also made me a special dessert based on my dietary needs (Crohn's disease) and it was amazing! Basically: Great food. Great service. Great atmosphere. Well worth your time! The piece that convinced this is an amazing dining experience is the Wong family. The Wong family makes the experience. Amazing place, the atmosphere is unlike anything over seen. Beautiful chandeliers and authentic flare in every direction. Classy live music and amazing service. Lots of authentic as well as typical Asian dishes to choose from. Seating for private parties, family outings or business parties.
