This place is great for lunch! Cheap, affordable and very worth the price! The service isn't that great but it's fast and the food is flavorful and delicious! I've been here twice within the month already and my meals were delicious both times! My bf got the duck burger (twice) and I got the pad Thai (twice)- you can't beat the price for ~$10 a meal- plus you get a choice of a salad or soup with your entree. I always have leftovers as the portions are big and the shrimp in the pad thai are also plentiful and big! Have eaten at this place usually at least once a year since 2011, and I can safely say I have not been disappointed..yet haha I usually order the Chicken Massaman Curry and the soup/salad combo depending on the season, and occasionally order the lunch specials. As expected of fusion, the curries all are very creamy and have a little zing to it, but for those who are really into spicy food, you can't really find that here--most dishes tend to be on the sweeter side. I can't say I've ever had a BAD meal here, but I'm not exactly sure why there are so many 5-star glowing reviews, because there is much better Thai food to be had in the neighborhood, and the French fusion aspect is just not that special... I've had several of the currys, some duck dishes, and the pad thai. Again, nothing was bad, but neither was it spectacular. The papaya salad is quite nice, and something I look forward to when visiting this restaurant, and the desserts are delicious. I have never had anything but good service, and the decor is lovely. It's a very nice atmosphere for an intimate date night. But don't get your hopes up about having some extraordinary meal. Been here a few times now and wanted to give this place the props it deserves. The peeking duck salad is phenomenal and full of duck meat, rare that places give you this much duck for any kind of meal. The seared tuna app is very good and comes with a sizable salad although there could be a little more tuna. I've had 2 of the curries so far, the royal something and the green one. Both were very well prepared and had a nice thick consistency vs watery ones I've tried at other places. Desserts are quite good as well. Give it a try. read more

I got ten bites of food wrapped to go because I couldn't A), finish them, or B) part with them! I adore Origins. Excellent date spot but also very accommodating to groups. ADORABLE and timeless interior. Very interesting and nice. I had expected the atmosphere to be more trendy based on reviews but its actually very authentic. I would hands down recommend everything I had tonight. All dishes were different yet better than what I was expecting, and I already had high hopes going in. You can't go wrong with the chicken satay. By itself, the chicken will be some of the most flavorful you've ever had. With the spicy peanut sauce and picked veggies, it is to die for. Then we split the pad see ew with shrimp and one of the entrees with beef and veggie in ginger sauce. It was the most amazing preparation of every ingredient. Visually, everything was beautiful. Overall, you can't go wrong with a night of the car show and Origins. This place could easily hang in any neighborhood in New York. Alright..... Keep in mind this is a very critical review. To preface - I LOVE thai food. Let's start from the beginning shall we? Seating - we were seated near the back so that from my seat I could see the kitchen marginally. I didn't mind this and the table and seating was very comfortable. I enjoy watching the kitchen work. However, it took a good 10 minutes before we got a waiter. Now this annoys me more than anything else. The assignment of tables is pretty clear. The waitress passed several times before we had to flag her down to give us our water. Alright mildly annoyed, but hey i love thai food. Appetizer - Steamed Vietnamese Rice Ravioli --To start this was very Ok in my personal opinion. Breaking it down. -----Sauce = great. Sweet tangy concoction. The rice win vinegar shined through. -----steamed rice roll - it was ok. It was kinda thick. The cut with the fork was fun. Little mushy when eaten though. Would've enjoyed more of a bit ----Portabella mushrooms inside - cook wonderfully well but with a mushy outside and mushy inside.....it was well...mushy. ----Bean sprouts - now this was the most upsetting part. Why was this warm....it should've been cold. The warm bean sprouts were not palatable and was again mushy. The lack of contrast in terms of cold or crunch was sorely lacking. Entrees. Lad Nar - Now i love this dish normally. Thick noodles are my absolute favorite. Usually the sauce is my favorite. The sauce in this case was very liquidy and didn't quite stick to the noodles. I'm not sure if this is the more authentic way of doing it but I didn't enjoy it. It could've had more kick too. Quite plain and one noted. Also overcooked chicken - sad. Noodle Curry - The menu clearly says crunchy noodles....I was very unhappy to see that the noodles weren't crunchy. They had pretty nice texture. Nice bite but not crunchy. The sauce is was again pretty ok. We had the shrimp and the shrimp was overcooked.....So that was upsetting. Again. Pretty ok dish. Not outstanding. Original Duck Tamarind - ok this was AWESOME - Crunchy delicious fatty duck with a superb sweet tangy tamarind sauce and fried asian eggplant. Seriously this was great. Get this. It hits with with all different types of textures of meaty, fatty, crunchy. This does tend towards the sweet side but i loved it. Suko Thai Curry - This was also pretty fantastic. The red curry sauce was creamy and delicious. The chicken was done very well. They also added julienned gala apples that added some complexity to the dish that really melded very well together. Pad Khing - This was ok. Again the shrimp was overcooked. Idk what's going on there. Sauce was once noted. Alright there is my long winded post. read more

Amazing Thai restaurant on a main street in Somerville. This area continues to grow into a nice, quaint, little town square with shops, restaurants, and bars, and Origin hopefully be a staple for years. It's in a little walking pedestrian center, and a deceivingly large restaurant, as there are essentially two dining rooms. The ambiance is pretty neat - modern and has a cool vibe to it. It's BYOB, which is also a nice touch. For appetizer, we got the imperial veggie rolls and they were delicious - full of flavor and they didn't break apart. We also got the pad kee maow (tofu) and a curry dish (blanking on the name) and both were fantastic. Their flavors are delicious, with the perfect amount of spice. Everything was also cooked the right way and it just worked. I've been fortunate enough to eat at many Thai restaurants in my days, and this one in Somerville has delicious food and a great ambiance that people should definitely check out. Pretty great little place. My boyfriend and I stopped in here for a lunch one day when he was visiting Raritan. The service was fast enough to get me back to work on time, but we didn't feel overly rushed. As for the food, the lunch fare is reasonably priced and very good. This place is very classy and they serve regular Thai food with a twist. I ordered the curried noodles with shrimp. It came in a coconut milk gravy with crispy noodles on top. The noodle did not seem oily and it had great crunch to it. The gravy tasted heavenly. My friend ordered crispy salmon wrapped in rice paper which was again another awesome dish. The best was the plum tart which we ordered for dessert. it came with vanilla gelato and the tart was fresh and delicious !! The waiter was very friendly. We were looking forward to trying Origin French Thai for quite some time and finally made our way there. Although we were seated as soon as we arrived for our reservation we soon found the service was very slow. We ordered appetizers which included onion soup and a crab spring roll which arrived in a reasonable time. Our main courses took over 45 minutes and closer to an hour to arrive at our table, meanwhile surrounding tables that arrived after us were served before us and nobody from the restaurant staff ever bothered to explain or apologize. We were just left waiting. The food was fine, not great and small portions. We didn't bother with trying desert since we were over the experience there and there are so many other options available in the area. Ambiance was loud and lacking. If you really want Thai food but aren't too hungry and have a lot of time to kill you might want to try it. We left not understanding why this restaurant gets good reviews and we left disappointed and it is unlikely we will return. read more

Four of us came to Origin French Thai at lunchtime to celebrate my sisters birthday. We were seated immediately. There were a lot of people enjoying their lunch. The portions aren't huge but the food is really good! However, I am not sure where the french comes in. I didn't see many french options on the menu nor did the entrees have french twists to them. My boyfriend and sister had rice noodle entrees while I had pad thai. The place is BYOB which is always a plus. The best was when they came to sing happy birthday for my sister. They brought out a birthday hat and had light effects while they sang. It was really fun. They do charge you for the ice cream and brownie dessert that comes with the Happy Birthday. Our party of 3 dined here on a Friday night. Personally I was disappointed all around. We started with a soup, chicken sate, and mussels. The soup wasn't too bad and was spicy. The chicken sate was chewy. Mussels I don't like so I'll avoid commenting on them. For dinner, I had the roasted chicken in five spice with sticky rice. This was incredibly weak tasting for Thai food. I tried my sister's pad thai and it was equally underwhelming. While my roast chicken was cooked well, it just did not have the flavor of Thai food. I used Sriracha paste the waiter gave me to make the meal a little more satisfying. We split one fried ice cream for dessert. It was cold and a pool of alcohol sat on the plate instead of being burned off during the flambé. We had to transfer it to another plate to avoid it from soaking up the liquor. 2 appetizers, 3 entrees, 1 dessert, and 3 8oz. bottles of soda for $91 pre-tax. If the food was anywhere near flavorful the cost wouldn't be an issue but this just wasn't good. read more

Quite the wonderful Thai/French fusion. There was everything from foie gras to pad thai on the menu. We got the steamed mussels, the crab & shrimp spring rolls, the beef salad, pad thai and chilean sea bass. Everything was exquisite and as good as it gets. The portion dizes are large, even the duck!! But the duck did cost i think 26? Pretty expensive for mid jersey, but it was very very good. 5/5. Curry was 3 or 4/5, but nothing spectacular. We've been dining here for years and this place still remains one of our favorite places to have date night. The ambiance is nice and the food has always been spot on for us. We tried the grilled filet of beef the last time and it was great. I tried one of the specials (lamb shank) and really enjoyed how the curry flavor enhanced it. Much love to the BYOB too! Thai food is always a little iffy from a vegan perspective, but this place very clearly displays the option to inquire about vegetarian options. Our waiter listed all of the meals that were able to substitute fried tofu for meat and even went so far as to point out the ones that could leave out egg. It's always so refreshing to have a staff that understands vegan needs and I couldn't be happier about how painless my ordering process was. I ordered the pad kee maow which was very good. Edible food? Yes. Inspired, unique or quality? No. We were in from out of town and we were excited to try this. On a Thursday evening it was half full and our food came out fast (too fast, as we'd realize to be considered quality). The $28 duck tamarind entree was served with a generic Asian sauce on a bed of deep fried, prepackaged eggplant and potato. The menu said nothing about tempura so we were very disappointed. For $28 I expect my food to be cooked and seasoned -- not frozen foods and a too sweet sauce. The shrimp pad see ew was passable, if not a little sweet. Would not return. I've eaten at this BYOB tucked away on a downtown sidestreet nearly ten times over the past five years, and simply stated, it's one of the most consistent restaurants at which I've ever eaten. It's classic French Thai, not the ubiquitous imitation in the Central Jersey area. With the exception of the annoying birthday music that plays (when the servers are told that someone is celebrating their birthday, of course), everything here is done well. Ambiance: Warm, moderately dark, artistic surroundings. It does tend to get loud at peak times, with close tables and hardwood flooring, which reflects sound sharply. Service: Exceptional and very friendly. Food: Ethereal. My favorite dishes include the green papaya salad, duck tamarind, and grilled shrimp. My girlfriend says that the grilled salmon dish is the best salmon that she's ever had; although, much to my chagrin, my only complain is that the salmon is quite garlicky. The dessert menu is decidedly French, and good, with dishes like crème brûlée and chocolate souffle. Price: For an all around outstanding experience, very reasonable. I do not think there is an entree beyond $25. With such a great reputation comes the common downside: reservation difficulty. If you're calling on a Saturday afternoon for a table that evening, expect to be told that the only available tables are at five and nine. I recommend calling at least a day before you plan on dining here, especially if it's a Friday or Saturday night. We ate at nine this evening, and the joint was packed. read more

The pros of the place are the cozy atmosphere, incredibly fast service, and accommodating staff (I was being a little difficult that day due to my fiance having a limited lunch break). One of my go-to BYO's in the area with city-like seating, beautiful décor, and ambiance to spare. Am obsessed with the arugula, apple, and fennel salad and chicken pad khing. Small plate options and daily specials allow diners to find what they desire in any size quantity. Can be noisy, but great for birthdays (you'll know when you see it the first time) and have never had anything less than amazing food each visit. Entrance area is very small, so definitely make a reservation on weekends to get in as there is very little room to sit and wait for a table. read more
