I ordered the spicy seaweed salad; I gotta say, compared to sushi palace's spicy seaweed salad , Kumo version was very depressing both in size and presentation. I also ordered sashimi there too. And same thing ; depressing. The consistency in cut was varied and the quality and taste was also just ok as well . Service was fine . No issues at all . When you hear All You Can Eat Sushi , there's one name that stands out among the rest . That would be Sushi Palace. Sushi Palace just does everything about all you can eat sushi better in all aspects. Put it this way . If you want brand name all you can eat sushi, hit up Sushi Palace. I actually prefer Kumo over Sushi Palace in Somerville because the quality of the sashimi and avocado is exponentially better. I've had some brown looking avocados at Sushi Palace. Also, the seating situation at Sushi Palace can feel so cluttered. The seats in Kumo are more spaced out and comfortable (especially by the booth) whereas in Sushi Palace the tables feel so close to one another. read more

Here's how we do AYCE sushi: We order as much sashimi as we want and order a bowl of sushi rice on the side to control our rice portions. We also load up on chicken katsu because it is AMAZING and always cooked to order and served crunchy here! But remember - only order what you can eat because they do charge extra for excess leftovers. I know Kumo is an AYCE sushi buffet, but we honestly come here for the AYCE sashimi and unlimited chicken katsu lol. My husband and I get at least 8 servings of the chicken katsu every time we come here because it's that good! If you go across the street to Sushi Yokohama, their chicken katsu is $16. If you're craving chicken katsu, you can order UNLIMITED portions of it here PLUS other appetizers and sushi for a little more than $30! That's an awesome deal. As for the sashimi, it's amazing. It always tastes fresh and it's cut thick. I usually get the eel, tuna, and salmon and order tobiko to mix into my sushi rice. Their seaweed salad is good too - order spicy mayo on the side and mix it in for more flavor! Staff is hit or miss here with efficiency, especially during lunch and dinner rush but overall average. As a regular customer it sucks to be writing this review. My family has been coming here almost every friday for years. However, the past 5-6 visits were pretty bad in terms of service. We chalked it up to being friday. Last night was the worst. As per usual we were sat and handed menus to order. Placed our order. After 45-50 mins we started noticing that people who sat after us were getting some of their food. We received some food. but a small portion of it. We flagged down a waitress and asked. She says "Its coming". 30 mins later still nothing. My father and wife got their food but my kids are crying with no food. We asked to speak to the manager and all they did was to ask for our order again. We said forget it and asked for the check. They had the audacity to try to charge us full price for very little food. Never again. Tip, if you go, and you think its taking a long time for your food. definitely make sure they check because they may have lost your order. read more

They wrote back a rude note saying "if you like x and y just order them individually"and"our boba are regular not sure what you are asking" which...was really rude and unnecessary. This was ordered through a third party. The ordering process was efficient, and the food was delivered in a timely matter. The menu had options ranging from sushi rolls to hibachi to noodles to bento boxes. The prices were a little much, but not terrible. 6 sushi rolls were ordered. See below for thoughts on each. All of them had a great presentation and each roll was constructed nicely. Alaska Roll ($5.95) - This was solid, lots of flavor with the salmon, avocado, and cucumber. Treasure ($14.00) - This consisted of tuna, salmon, avocado, snow crab, tobiko and crunch that was wrapped in soybean paper. There was not a lot of crunch here and was somewhat dry, but the fish was pleasant. Pink Lady Roll ($12.00) - This had spicy tuna and avocado as a filling with salmon on top. This was tasty, but not too spicy. Lobster Mango ($13.00) - There was spicy lobster on the inside with sliced mango, avocado, and eel sauce on top. This was a nice combination, but the only issue was the lack of mango present. Valentine ($13.00) - This had spicy crab and avocado as the filling and was topped with salmon and avocado. This was probably my favorite as there was a slight kick. I really enjoyed the spicy crab flavor with the salmon. The Kamikaze roll was overwhelming for me with its tempura pieces and giant size. I was much more in the mood for refreshing rolls like the Jersey Girl and one that was wrapped in a green, cucumber paper? The winner for me was the sashimi. You have to try the "White Tuna" and the "Red Snapper". So fresh, so juicy, and so flavorful. Each fish has a unique personality that isn't really appreciated when it's cooked. Other standouts: spicy seaweed salad, stir fried noodles, and miso soup. To finish things off, go ahead and order all 3 of the ice creams. I LOVE THIS PLACE! I am a huge sushi fan and it can be so expensive so I am always looking for a good ALL YOU CAN EAT SPOT! First of all, I love that you can get sashimi and sushi at the AYCE spot- that's not always a thing! I typically like to order the individual sushi pieces : here I have salmon, white tuna and tuna! They are delicious. I like how they lay it on a pretty small bed of rice and the fish completely covers it! It gives me a chance to try lots of the fishes! Their spicy salmon roll is sooooo delicious. You can tell it's very fresh and although it's spicy it's pretty mild and definitely easy to eat! Not pictured- because I gobbled it down too fast we're a few of the speciality rolls I always get one of the dragon rolls, a rainbow roll and their miso soup! Ordered a lunch pork katsu bento, mexican roll (basically spicy salmon with avocado), and a side of eel sauce. I never ate here in person in the Before Times™ and didn't check the reviews before ordering (I'm living dangerously in the Dark Times™ I guess), so I had no expectations. I was pleased with my order. The lunch bento alone was more than enough food. My roll was perfectly adequate - well shaped, well portioned. The pork katsu was pounded out thin and crispy fried (maybe a tiny bit over done on the inside, but I also couldn't eat it right away so that didn't help). I don't love shumai in general, but the two in the box tasted fine. My one complaint about the box was that the katsu was placed on top of a bed of lettuce instead of on top of the rice. I don't think I've seen that before and would have preferred the reverse - the lettuce was just wilted and plain this way. One other oddity - eel sauce tasted exceptionally salty to me, and I typically prefer my food heavily seasoned/salted. I've never noticed that in eel sauce before. read more

The food is good but my complaint is they give way too small pieces for sashimi. I get it, its a buffet and you're trying to make sure you make money. But tell me how does this make sense. We've been coming to Kumo for years. It is easily our top choice for local sushi and you really can't beat the All You Can Eat deal. Kumo does not skimp on quality when you are ordering quantity. The rolls are always created with care, so well decorated and made with fresh ingredients. I am always craving their Sunshine Roll and on occasion we'll indulge in a Godzilla Roll. Their menus are also very simple to order from and to read, there is something on there for everyone - the sushi shy, the vegetarian and the adventurous diner. I never hesitate to bring a new guest with me because I know that it is a relaxed environment with delicious food, friendly staff and they are BYOB. Added bonus - they have their own private lot in the back, this is a huge score for any restaurant on Main Street in Somerville. At this time, due to NJ COVID restrictions, they are offering outdoor dining in their back lot, it's nicely shaded under the tents and a new tablecloth is placed at the table for each new dining party. You can't beat their lunch special - $13.95 for All You Can Eat appetizers/sushi is an incredible deal that gives you a great bang for your buck. As long as Kumo is in open, they'll have my business - it's food is far superior and more fresh than Sushi Palace. It took a veey long time for the waitress to pick up the menus from us even though we tried flagging the staff down a few times. Also, it took well over 20 minutes for food to begin to arrive to our table which I thought was weird since the restaurant was no where near full. What did me over was when I saw the owner rush out edamame to a table that had just arrived but we were at the 20 min mark (and also had ordered edamame). I flagged her over to express my concern to which she said that the other table had kids and that they were hungry. Our table had also had a two year old sitting right there as well without food and I didn't seem it an appropriate answer. She assured me food was on its way. Maybe another 5-10 minutes after that, food started to arrive. On it's own, the service was definitely 2 stars, however, the others I was with assured me that in previous times they had been there, the service was not this slow and that the restaurant had been much busier. Waitstaff took 20 minutes to take our drink order and another 20 minutes to take our order slips. They charge extra for leftover food which is understandable but they gave us extra plates of food that we did not order in the first place. In addition, some of the things we did order, we did not receive. When it came to the actual food, cooked foods like fried rice, noodles, salmon, chicken, etc. were all drenched in sauce. The sushi was clearly not fresh. It tasted sour, was warm, and had too much rice. The rice on the sushi was hard as well. The last time we ate here was February 2020 and our experience at that time was the complete opposite of the one we just had. It is unfortunate to see the quality of this business plummet. I like the non-vanilla sashimi choices like mackerel, octopus, red clam, squid along with the white tuna etc.. These were all exceptionally good! Timing/Wait/Crowd: We reserved and arrived around 6;00 pm and sat right away. The place was kind of empty with plenty of space (Way better than the other place!!) and consequently, if anything the soups, salads and sashimi came almost too quickly. Our second round was quickly filled and again spectacular quality. Service: Very Polite! But yes, they do need to increase the attentiveness or add wait staff. I had read the reviews about people having issues with this and was prepared for this and there is some validity towards that. Kudos to Kumo sushi to be one of the few AYCE that had incorporated outdoor dining. This is amazing because i miss my AYCE, bad. There wasn't a wait and they had a good amount of tables outside. I liked how the tables were a good distance from each other. Honestly, it was a pinch of feeling normal for a second. The apps were okay. We ordered a spicy seaweed salad and a kani salad and had mixed those together -- try this it tastes better this way lol. The sushi rolls are good but be careful that they will give you some rolls that you didn't specifically order. It seems to be a common mix up because my friend and I didn't quite remember who ordered one of the rolls. And the table behind us had the same issue. Luckily, all the rolls were super yummy and I really had no regrats lol. The sashimi was mediocre. I had felt that it wasn't the freshest quality from Kumo but it did satisfy my cravings to say the least. They do not have some stuff that they had offer Pre-COVID but that is like everywhere else during these times. The servers here are friendly and attentive to the best of their abilities. I've been to several different all you can eat sushi places and Kumo may be my least favorite unfortunately. The appetizers were freshly cooked and came out HOT which was great but when going to AYCES I look for places that don't load in the rice with your nigiri sushi or rolls and they did just that. I don't want to be filling up on rice I want to be filling up on sushi! WAY too much rice, a small sliver of fish was sat on top of a handful of rice which takes away from the flavor of the fish. The fish was fresh however and they had some interesting sushi rolls on their AYCES menu. When our sushi roll plate came out I can immediately tell there was stuff missing. One roll was supposed to have black tobiko on top and no where was the black tobiko on the plate. Another roll was supposed to have scallion on top and once again no where was there scallion on the plate. The service was mediocre. I wouldn't recommend Kumo but I'm glad I got to try it. I do recommend Sushi Palace which is right down the street from Kumo and is AYCES. read more

Was in town visiting friends when we felt a craving for sushi. To be honest, we took that this restaurant was on main street at face value, it has to be pretty decent right? Arrived about 30 min after opening on a Sunday, the signs outside said 'All you can eat' for about $17 so we had that expectation. Entered into restaurant to no fanfare, at all. As in there was no host, the 4 sushi chefs did not even look up to acknowledge we had entered the restaurant. We said hello, and one of the chefs looked up, then resumed work without a word. Okay, not a great welcome, but we didn't think anything of it, after all we were just 30 min past opening, maybe food prep was still in progress. Enter the hostess a few minutes later who asked if we are eating in or taking out. We say eating in, and she seats us before walking back into kitchen. Without menus. I got up and fetched paper brochure take out menus from the hostess stand for all 6 of our friends. Turned out, on the menu, all you can eat was in fact $28, not $17. That was strike one. A few minutes later a server arrives to take our order. It turns out, one of our party wanted noodles which while on the menus, was no longer an option the restaurant offered. Okay, that's fine, so our friend ordered something else. Food came out shortly from the kitchen for 3 friends who ordered hot food, about a 10 minute wait. 5 min pass and a sushi roll order arrives for friend 3. Another 20 min pass before the last 2 sashimi orders arrived. The span of time waiting for the last two meals, everyone else had finished their food. The food for the most part, was average. Tempura didn't stick out, our friend who suspected the fish quality, ordered a California roll so no complications there. But there's always something. The last order of chirashi sushi that arrived was the coup de grace. The tuna sashimi color looked darker than normal, but our last friend did not suspect anything until he ate it. Then immediately fished it out of his mouth. It was rotting, and he could taste in the flavour and texture. At this point we were so fed up, we paid and left. Tip was automatically calculated unfortunately so we couldn't pay less. I almost wish that we brought our food reviewing cameras/equipment, the lighting was so dim we would have needed our lights to obtain good photos (see attached). Not that the display was anything to write home about, all the food look standardly plated without thought.
